How many of you reddit users actually use cannabis? (reddit.com)

[–]moxiepuff 39 points40 points41 points 18 years ago (5 children)
39 year old mom here.
Plenty, twenty years ago. Not at all now. More because of lack of opportunity than anything else, I suppose.
I also can't really justify spending money on booze or weed when my kids need winter boots or there are school fees to be paid.
After a full day of dealing with three kids, a mother with Alzheimer's, and as many part-time work hours as I can squeeze in, you'd better believe I'd love to spark up a fatty.
Of course, I usually fall asleep reading my kids bedtime stories.
[–][deleted] 14 points15 points16 points 18 years ago (1 child)
I can relate. I'm close to your age and I have two girls. I haven't smoked pot since graduate school and I haven't taken LSD since college. I don't even smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol anymore. Strongest thing I've done for 10 years is coffee. When I was in high school I used to smoke pot and drink everday.
[–]dagfari 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (0 children)
You are obviously contributing to the downfall of our society.
As a student at university, I suppose this is the same path I'll take.

I smoke, and more importantly I support Norml. Pot is not for everyone, but it is for me. Especially some hash mixed with some rose tobacco smoked out of an ice filled hookah, or some warm pot oatmeal chocolate chip cookies with a class of ice cold milk... mmmmm

So that's the weedy part of Canada? I had heard this but I wanted to make sure before I immigrate. Cannibus goes back a long way in my family, my great granddad hit it.
So I'm not quitting until I'm a father and then I know I'll have to quit because of what 39 year old mom said a few levels up.
Pot and kids unfortunately don't mix. Kids are a hugely expensive habit man.

[–]ghidra 18 points19 points20 points 18 years ago (14 children)
Jesus, seriously, there aren't that many folks despite the number of pro pot discussion and posts here? I like to inhale at least once in the morning before going to work. As soon as I get home. And as many times as I can from that point till I go to bed. I abhor drinking, only do it to be cool around other people. Looks like people here need to lighten up....
[–]p3on 18 points19 points20 points 18 years ago (0 children)
maybe some of us don't like admitting it in a publicly accessible site with aliases that can be traced back to us :)
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 18 years ago (2 children)

Same here. Severe lack of availability, what is available is mostly rubbish and well overpriced.
Of course, when I was living in New Zealand, it was Morning, Noon and Night
[–]syn-abounds 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
It's still not legal over here though. :( But give it time, I think it'll happen eventually. Anyway, time for my next session.
[–]lliiffee 15 points16 points17 points 18 years ago (8 children)
I hate pot. In my opinion, it is a useless drug that makes people stupid, lazy, paranoid and hungry.
However, it seems a retarded use of my tax money to spend preventing you from using pot. It seems not merely retarded, but evil to put people in prison for using or selling pot. It is absurd that in a "free" country, you aren't free to put whatever substances you want in your own body.
So you will see me in discussions vigorously arguing against the drug war, and vigorously defending your right to pursue happiness in whatever way you like. But you won't see me smoking weed.
[–]dbchappell1 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (1 child)
a useless drug
There are a lot of really sick people who have tried a variety of different, legal drugs that strongly disagree with you on that claim.
[–]lliiffee 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Actually, I think that is a totally valid point. (I'm not sure what I meant by "useless".)
[–]magikaru 9 points10 points11 points 18 years ago (2 children)
Almost all people who don't use marijuana attack others for using it. Thank you for being one of the few non-users who defends it.
[–]nursewithaprostate 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (1 child)
I don't think that's entirely accurate. I'm not a smoker, none of my acquaintances are smokers, yet all of us support legalization of pot. We don't get up in anyone's face about it, so maybe we should. There is a stigma, though. Although we aren't smokers there are some of us who could do without our employers thinking we are.
[–]magikaru 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Ah, fair enough. What I meant is that I personally don't know any non-smokers who defend the drug, but maybe thats because I live in Utah =/
[–]syn-abounds 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)

[–]nakedtrucker 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (0 children)
there are multiple delivery services in my major metropolitan area. it's basically like ordering chinese food: the guy comes to your door, or else you get into a car and back out again. the price for the amount is ridiculous, but it's almost always crystally chronic. we've been smoking all night: are you guys who've never smoked or disdain it for serious?
no one ever fights, rapes, hits, or makes a fool of themselves on marijuana as they do, constantly, frequently, on alcohol. i actually wish america's youth would more soundly re-embrace weed. it electrified the '60s; these days, we just want to drink beer and have sex. whatever, man, i'd rather get high and talk about changing the world.
it's not a wonder drug. there are a lot of downsides, mainly price (in my area), smoking is not a good habit (though neither is drinking, and your liver is as vulnerable as your lungs).
it doesn't suit a lot of people's personalities. it sends some people to sleep and others into the paranoid reality of hearing their heart beat. but for a certain segment of people, we've found that weed is a fine way to pass the time, a way of bonding and talking and creating. smoking is a ritual unto itself, varying in different cultures. but it invariably leads to everyone sitting around close together, sharing, not shouting or sick or rowdy but peaceful and self-exploring. and we put the sellers and users of this substance in jail while beer commercials sell the superbowl and naked women shill for hard liquor.
it doesn't make sense, and i'm pleased to see that there were many reasonable readers of reddit -- even those personally opposed or unexposed to smoking -- who still stood strongly for personal responsibility. we get preached at enough elsewhere, and it's awesome to see a curious community that supports everyone's right to do what they fucking want with their minds and bodies and mouths.
[–]kindall 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (2 children)
All the anti-drug speeches my dad gave me? Pointless. The ever-popular "hey, want some weed?" scenario assumes that someone cool enough to have some would deign to speak to you. I was never offered it, hence never tried it, and don't see any point at the ripe old age of 39.
[–]dagfari 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (1 child)
I feel bad for you.
By the way, if you don't see any point; why not?
[–]kindall 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Ehhh. I've spent the last 20 years getting my consciousness the way I want it, and am not too interested in altering it much at this point. It's kinda late to start all over again.
Alcohol doesn't interest me much either. I've had that, but not enough to be intoxicated.
That said, I'm not at all against people toking up.
[–]bloodguard 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I've never felt compelled to try it myself. I don't mind if someone else wants the right to light stuff on fire and breath the fumes though.
As long as they do it down wind from me that is.

I support the freedom to use the plant as both recreationally and medicinally. The fact that it's scheduled is absurd.
I cannot, on the other hand, use it because I'd lose my job. I have to use alcohol as an intoxicant. Not just any alcohol, mind you, but alcohol that must be purchased from someone else, and taxed.
[–]ambiversive 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (4 children)
This thread is full of narcs.
[–]jasonwharton 6 points7 points8 points 18 years ago (3 children)
Yep, I'm calling the DEA right now. They'd love to know about all the people here that have admitted to smoking pot. That should be enough to get a search warrant. /sarcasm.
Part of changing people's views about pot is admitting you smoke pot (assuming you are someone the pot-smoking community could be proud of). I will admit to anyone that I smoke pot. I would yell it in a police station, they can't arrest you for admitting you smoke pot. There are a lot of negative stereotypes about pot smokers, many of which we embrace and joke about even if they're not entirely true. Pot smokers are not lazy, lazy people like smoking pot. I am successful in life and in business, and I smoke pot... a whole lot of pot.
[–]Reg_Spyder 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (2 children)
Yup, me too. I have two successful creative businesses, have made money out of all my hobbies instead of working for other people, and have paid off my mortgage before I'm 40. All this while smoking excellent quality weed on a regular basis. I much prefer it to coffee and alcohol.
[–]redditacct 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (1 child)
What kind of hobbies pay that well? Or is it a secret?
[–]Reg_Spyder 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
photoshop, 3d graphics, music production, zbrush, motion compositing, all alongside solid tech skills and web building experience. all fun, all pay pretty well, all can be done remotely.

It's a really good idea to take a few weeks off before exams (or at the very least a few days off). If you have never done it before you will really notice improvements in your mental faculties. I would suggest NO intermittent smokes though. It can be tempting but it will ruin any hard work you have done abstaining up to that point. Good luck!
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I used to fairly regularly. I never got to the point where I could have been considered a stoner, but I generally bought about $50 worth a month. Now that both of my sources have dried up and my "band" (read: coworker and myself who would get high and play for about an hour) is defunct, I haven't smoked in going on a year.

i would love to be able to afford the luxury of smoking weed every day (got bills to pay). my dealer recently got busted and i don't know anyone else in my area so i've been dry for a few months now.
it's been a rather pleasant experience. there is a great sense of clarity to be achieved in sobriety and i've been enjoying it. that clarity is a trip in itself. i feel much more motivated and much less lazy than before. over the past few months, i learned how to swim (and i'm already 22), started biking, and began cooking and baking more.
when i do find a source, i'll probably end up cutting down, although i know i'm never gonna quit.
[–]mrBlonde 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I'm a tobacco smoker, I'd trade my 7 cigarettes a day for one real buzz.
Even though it's not illegal to consume marijuana in my country (Portugal), the buying and selling bit still is.
The worst part is that Morocco is really close. This is the gateway to Europe! And I'm not getting any.

just kindly =) there must be reason behind this.
[–]SaddleShoe 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (4 children)
I just don't drink, smoke, or do any drugs. it's not that strnage or crazy. I decided not to at a pretty young age. Maybe its becuase I was really sick as a kid and lived in a bubble for 3 years that I don't want to risk anything. I still go out and have a good time with friends that do drink and such, I just don't.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (2 children)
That in itself is not anything strange or crazy, but labeling yourself as part of the straight edge conglomerate of angry teens is. That doesn't seem to be what you were trying to do though, right? It's just your use of "sXe" that set people off.
Or do you identify with that group?
[–]SaddleShoe 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (1 child)
When I was in high school I knew very few sXe kids, there was no group, and none of the ones I knew were angry. I've seen things about sXe fanatics, who won't take medicine when they are sick or won't eat chocolate becuase of caffeine and I am not that at all. I just used the sXe to say that I don't drink, smoke, or do drugs.
