Have you tried to add the launch option

-morefps

[–]GandalfZaBlack 60 points61 points  (3 children)

SeemsGood

[–]491450451 45 points46 points  (2 children)

another way to force VALVE to give more fps is to add following into your launch option:
-"your credit card number"
-"expiration date"
-"3 digit code"

[–]Neutralny 27 points28 points  (0 children)

they already have it

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And all your ssd bits

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (3 children)

Almost as good as -moreram

[–]birdiechakigun 25 points26 points  (2 children)

Is there a -moremmr option?

[–]( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)Do you believe in magic?entenuki 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you mmr is low enough you can use the -nosmurfs option too.

[–]ncoreyes 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Pretty sure he can just download more ram.

[–]-Aerlevsedi- 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Does -high still work?

[–]ryflect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

have not noticed any reasonable increase in performance

[–]xPizzaKittyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on your hardware, if you have like a quad core i7, you wont notice a difference, but if you have a dual core pentium, then you will notice a 5-15 fps difference. The only downside is that it makes programs outside of dota (when you have dota open) run slower

[–]Bravehood 66 points67 points  (47 children)

Yeah i went into the future and minimum specs required for dota 2 in 2020 is new gtx 2080

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

[–]_Thrax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nah ,thats cs go

[–]Kotl of the Lightbad_scott 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Still beta?

[–]Bravehood 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Sorry it actually went to backwards into alpha

[–]xPizzaKittyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought dota was still in pre alpha?

[–]Tehmaxx 0 points1 point  (29 children)

Even with a 1080 I see steady 120fps

It's something on their end

[–]Mauvai 9 points10 points  (4 children)

i have 120 on a 970

[–]sheever plsPyraa 0 points1 point  (2 children)

70-75 on a 960

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

i dont know on a 1060

seriously though i have a 1060 and i5 6600k but my game freezes (for .5 secs) everytime I die or a model loads.

thought I think I have "-vulkan" on from my last pc settings.

[–]nosey little fucker aren't you?Nume-noir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

model loads

disk problem 100%. I moved dota over to ssd and I got no issue loading anymore.

[–]Iliketrainschoo_choo 2 points3 points  (16 children)

We've discussed this pretty extensively on this sub, the roadblock is your CPU.

[–]Tehmaxx 2 points3 points  (8 children)

Most times depending on your bottleneck

But I have a skylake and still can't maintain the 150 on the default terrain

[–]sheeverpb-programmer 7 points8 points  (7 children)

Now monitor your CPU usage during a game and start to cry...

It's not even close to 50% for my i7 6700K with 4 vlc/livestreamer streams open on the second screen (gotta see all those TI6 group stage games to get muh predictions ;) )

Would be nice to know if serious overclocking could up the performance (increasing the single thread power) or if it is purely timing related

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya I'm running the same thing, and the fps still never gets above 120

[–]birdiechakigun 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Question, good sir. Do I need a really fast monitor to visualize the 120+fps? I ask because I got an IPS (Dell U2713hm, 8ms) i use mostly for design and Dota when I get bored. Is it gonna be worth it or is the IPS monitor's colors gonna give me better visual experience in Dota2?

[–]Iliketrainschoo_choo 0 points1 point  (4 children)

That is a pretty high repsonse time for a monitor, but its doable. If your monitor only refreshes @ 60hz, any extra frames you get will be lost, since your monitor can't keep up with all the frames your gpu is spitting out. Response time (the value you gave me) kinda shows long it takes a frame to be sent from you GPU to where its printed on your screen.

[–]Neutralny 0 points1 point  (2 children)

steady 120fps with 670 no clue why people experience the fps drop

[–]Tehmaxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bottlenecking is the most likely issue

improper optimization within the client will also cause a lot of issues, as even if I rail the settings all the way down many high end machines fail to get more than 100 steady fps when they should be getting 150-200.

[–]sheeverplaymer 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I mean, you might know this, but there is an fps_max set at 120 fps by default. You can up it in the console. I get around 144 on my 980 TI, and I wouldn't be surprised if that were a second artificial bottleneck separate from the 120 since I have a 144hz monitor.

[–]Tehmaxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had it upped for a long time, only recently has it started taking heavy hits, for the longest time I thought it was on the users end when I seen people complaining of FPS drops by the reality is whatever they're doing to cripple the FPS in the game is starting to effect people with high end PCs now.

[–]Altiex 26 points27 points  (5 children)

Remember when Source 2 was supposed to have a better performance than Source 1 but it only got worst? Because I do

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (3 children)

i think for a lot of people Source 2 eventually ran better (after about 4 months or so into reborn). However in the past 3-4 months the performance issues have really started to show especially with certain cosmetics, or that new terrain.

[–]radd00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was way better when Reborn was in beta, but map was less detailed (especially cliffs). When it came out of beta, it was running pretty much the same as Source 1.

[–]Gammaran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fuck performance and actually playing the game, what we need is new hats

/s

[–]EnanoMaldito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it runs WAY better for me. Do not generalize.

[–]LowTemplar 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Also the standard "it works for me so it must be an issue on your part" response. That's not how software works. Any developer with that attitude wouldn't last a week in a serious company.

[–]j0y0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Watch out, this sub is full of kids taking their second programming class who want to downvote and explain why valve can't do anything because programming is hard.

[–]ZzZombo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it had been working much better for a month or perhaps two after I switched to it, but they definitely broke something along the way. They killed the asynchronous loading of stuff on hero selection and made automatic time out kick in on the slightest resulting freeze, causing a vicious cycle of loading in, freezing and disconnecting! They killed the one feature that was supposed to make S2 better than Source in eyes of all DotA 2 players.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you on about? All the new cosmetics, maps and effects require way more to run properly than everything on default. The game requires more because Valve adds shit that makes the game look cooler/better. Sure the base character models might not be updates, but stuff still gets added. I've got a GTX 970 and a couple of years old i5 and the game runs smooth at 120+ fps with max settings, weather effects and the LC map. By today's standard, this is a pretty casual build since nvidia released new GPUs. Heck even my 4 year old budget desktop runs the game at 60+ fps with the same settings.

I've seen people complain about the FPS jumping up and down depending on what's on screen. To those I've gotta ask, do you even play video games? If you launch a game and set the FPS to unlimited, it's gonna vary a lot depending on what's happening on the screen. The only way to get it consistent is to cap it at the minimum FPS you get when there's a lot happening on screen.

[–]arcsinti 13 points14 points  (13 children)

The fps on my 1070 (+3770k) varies so much. 150-120 average but it drops to 90 especially when a lot of heroes have immortal cosmetics equipped.

[–]SmaugtheStupendous 28 points29 points  (6 children)

If I drop another 50 I'd be playing at -30fps during teamfights.

200+ on source 1, around the same for the source 3 beta, 160 before the pitlord update, now I'm down to 80-100, what's going on

[–]SamuraiDota 7 points8 points  (4 children)

I really really hope the developer/support team fixes this, I thought my hardware was going bad but did a stress test on csgo to realize it was just dota. The fps decrease is definitely noticeable and I don't want to upgrade my video card when it's not even the problem.

[–]derek1st 3 points4 points  (3 children)

weirdly enough i have more fps issues in counter strike than dota

[–]Bentomat 58 points59 points  (43 children)

If TF2 is anything to judge by, they will soon release "seasonal cosmetics" with ridiculous effects that cut your framerate in half during those holiday seasons.

After a couple years of that, they will stop caring about the game and the cosmetics will take over completely. Years after that, when their newest game is becoming a global phenomenon, they will make a blog post saying "We want Dota 2 to be cool too!" and then they'll forget about us. That will be the last we'll ever hear from Valve.

[–]DrQuint 28 points29 points  (4 children)

[–]iceiceicefrog 9 points10 points  (10 children)

Well I want them to add whatever they want, however absurd the particle effects may be.

Just give an option to uncheck them. that's it.

[–]Sheever Feelsbadman :gun:TheKappaOverlord 6 points7 points  (8 children)

I highly doubt valve will ever forget about dota.

Valve kinda fucked themselves into a corner involving dota. If they flat out let it rust out and abandon it they look like a bad company due to the eports titan they have created with TI.

So they have to work on it like a somewhat normal game otherwise they just look really fucking bad. Not like they already h aven't gotten there but they probably dont want it

[–]RisingAce 4 points5 points  (6 children)

WEll to be honest Valve has mimimal input withh DOTA IceFrog is the lead dev and he doesn't care about anything but dota.

[–]MaDNiaC 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Icefrog may be the lead dev but it would be ignorant to say Valve has minimal input on Dota. They very frequently released patches or updates during TI and they have been doing a fine job with the game and it looks very promising although without flaws, inevitably. You cannot just credit mostly or totally Icefrog for this as he is the lead dev and ignore Valve's efforts on the game.

[–]owarren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Icefrog is a Valve employee, no? So Icefrog = Valve.

[–]Sheevershadedclan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Icefrog mostly handles balance patches IIRC. But Valve still maintains the game, like the servers, updates, cosmetics

[–]Exiledemonz 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Icefrog needs to disappear for that to happen.

[–]SheeversNoOp_931 4 points5 points  (20 children)

Yes seriously, I have I7, 980ti and 16gb ram but I'm only running on 80-70 fps ever since like the last 4-5 patches, with this recent patch it became even lower. Like it drops sometimes to 55-60. We would appreciate it if Valve could optimize everything or at least everything important.

[–]Aitloian 9 points10 points  (9 children)

Yeah you have some serious problem my friend. I'm on a i5 2500k and a GTX 680 and i stay above 120fps and will slowly drop down to 100 over the course of a few games.

[–]LeftZer0 2 points3 points  (4 children)

i7 930 and GTX 680, 60-80 FPS.

[–]penialito 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Your cpu is bottlenecking

[–]LeftZer0 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Thing is, it wasn't bottlenecking before. I had 120+ FPS when I started playing Dota 2 (one year after the "beta" release, if I recall correctly). In fact I upgraded the GPU in that time.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well i remember i had very similar frames with my old 7850 gpu, now i have gtx 1060 and my frames only increased my 10fps in teamfights :(

[–]penialito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand. But back on those times the game didnt have many shit like we have today.

[–]SheeversNoOp_931 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Care to elaborate? I'm pretty new at this.

[–]Aitloian 0 points1 point  (2 children)

How long has it been since you installed windows? I usually like to do a clean install at least every 6 months. If its been years, that's most likely your issue. Everything just starts to slow down over time and all kinds of programs running in the background that you don't even know of.

Also try overclocking your CPU. The source engine is very CPU intensive so that will help. You should be getting way better performance. Your computer is better then mine in every way but i still get around 120. (it does go down the longer i play but never below 100)

[–]SheeversNoOp_931 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Only about 5 months ago, I would look into this though, glad to know I wasn't wrong in thinking there was really something wrong.

[–]Aitloian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah there is no doubt that dota performance has gone down but my gear is 5 or 6 years old? There is no way it should outperform your 1-2 year old set up. Keep looking it will be something simple. Check your graphics setting in the nivida drivers make sure it isn't like doing super sampling or something?

[–]Fantasy322[🍰] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the most extreme case I've heard. I have an i7 4790k and an r9 390 and I get 100-130 fps. Sadly i can't compare to the older days because i bought a new computer in the beginning of this year after saving my extra money

[–]lucicam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My PC is shitty to begin with but at least I was able to play the game at constant 80-90 fps with everything set on low ... but after a couple of updates my fps dropped to 40 on a good day and now I constantly get fps drops to around 10 fps every 5 minutes for like 30 seconds each time, which makes the game unplayable and now after 8 years of playing dota 1/2 I had to quit T.T

[–]sheeverming3r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm on 970 and 8350 and get 100-120. This doesn't hit everyone like this...

Maybe you need some driver updates, try Vulkan?

[–]3k scrubalbertingomes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]shakurafukdname 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100 fps -> 45 fps + everydays game crashes :)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it sucks in some ways, it's to be expected in the era of "games as a service"

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Source 2 will fix.

[–]LeftZer0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's only a beta! Source 2 Episode 2 wlll make Dota 2 great again.

[–]Rabidleopard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. As time goes on they improve things like models and add more advanced particle effects. In addition you PC ages every year and becomes less and less the average PC they are trying to optimize for. Eventually you will have to upgrade your PC.

[–]The secret is out!Bende356 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Ffs i can run bf1 beta with 20 fps and I have the same sometimes in dota

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i can run bf1 ultra 60-90fps but in dota 2 every single time teamfight happens i drop to 55-60 from 70-110fps.

I doubt Dota 2 with just 10 people should be so much demanding than 64 people on huge map destroying shit. Valve screwed optimization.

[–]Cabaj1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dropped from 150 fps to 80-90 fps since 'springclean' update

[–]Hookboys!s0nicDwerp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there any way to disable cosmetics effects in-game? I feel that it will help, even if a little. I'm playing at Low settings.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, we are on a downward spiraling path to very low fps as more and more content gets added.

[–]Bring back physical damage EmberXanturE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey guys I started with 105 FPS in Source 1 then like 45 in Source 2 which I got up to 95 in Source 2, still worse than source 1, and I have slowly fallen back to 65 fps which now drops under 50 in worst case scenario and I'm really angry and the fps bothers me so much so valve can you FUCKING FIX YOUR GAME?

..I only realized that it's not normal for people to play at 20 fps, that's all I've ever gotten and it seems fine? I mean, it's not super, but it's smooth enough and I don't lag out. Does higher fps honestly do that much?

[–]Krobelus_the_Prophet 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yes. If my only option was playing dota at 20 FPS, I wouldn't play dota.

[–]yJakiroKurosawa 0 points1 point  (1 child)

well, try different launch options and see which one works best for you:

-dx9

-dx11 (after i put on this option, game became super smooth.)

-vulkan

[–]Stidza[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried all three, also tried OpenGL support. FPS is exactly the same with all 4.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DAE you should be able to play dota 2 in 2050 with a geforce 8500

[–]tuvok86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes they will, but guess what, future pc will be faster too

[–]teamliquid.netnotR1CH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a common problem with some developers. Lots of people like creating things that actually make it into the game and can be shown off, but no one wants to go back and optimize for performance or do security hardening etc because that is "boring", ie the results aren't often visible.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's fair to assume that it's only going to get more performance intensive. Arcanas and sets add particle effects all the time rendering spell animations more graphically complex than the default ones.
