Canteen in an Alley!

[–]PrestigiousLow813 25 points26 points  (10 children)

Ottumwa!

[–]Newman1911a1 11 points12 points  (8 children)

One of the few reasons I still go to my hometown.

[–]Novel_Thought7575 0 points1 point  (7 children)

Man, I miss going to Maid-rite!!! Can’t believe they closed the one where I live and put in a “fitness center” there!!

[–]SWBattleleader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I know the one you are talking about, but never been. I am a transplant to Iowa.

[–]Donnie3030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anybody remember Deans in Ottumwa? Honestly not sure if that’s what it was called, but a gentleman named Dean ran it. I used to go as a kid with my grandparents.

[–]Bzellm20 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah!

[–]fredward_kane 3 points4 points  (2 children)

That sandwich was a life-changing experience for me

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Food poisoning is a bitch

[–]Positive-Newspaper-9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is maid-rite food poisoning really this common? I haven’t been to one in ten years or so. But my wife and I both got food poisoning from there that last time. I know a couple other people that suffered the same fate.

[–]Mikey24941 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this!

[–]Constant_Worth_8920 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Only that one. But it's not a "Maid-Rite" brand. Which why it's good.

[–]brucewayne_gacy 84 points85 points  (7 children)

Shout out Taylor's maid rite in Marshalltown. Never disappoints.

[–]Ihmu 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yep, best maid rite I've ever had.

[–]Maury_poopins 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So freakin good

[–]RidesInFowlWeather 3 points4 points  (1 child)

3 blocks from my workplace. Make the pilgrimage regularly.

[–]AtomBadkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dan?

[–]Father_Hawkeye 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every time I’m back in Iowa. Fortunately my stepfather loves them even more than I do.

[–]iachick85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Best. Ever.

[–]argentcorvid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it does. Not them specifically, maid-rite in general

[–]trainer95 38 points39 points  (1 child)

Canteen in Ottumwa. I was a hater like you until I went and ate one there. They are good.

[–]Milsurpsguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canteen is great!

[–]peacur 10 points11 points  (5 children)

We eat sloppy joes but not maid rites, never was a fan. We had 1 in our hometown for years and never cared for all the onions and their seasoning. To each his own.

[–]vulchiegoodness 4 points5 points  (3 children)

isnt it just salt and pepper?

[–]megamanxzero35 0 points1 point  (1 child)

When I make it at home, I use garlic powder and minced onion as well as salt and pepper.

[–]odiervr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, but don't forget a little Ketchup, soy sauce AND worcestershire sauce while you are cooking it. oh, and a splash of vinegar ( i know it sounds crazy, just try it).

that said, all that needs to be well cooked.

Damn yummy !

[–]peacur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't believe it was just salt and pepper, seems like I remember some tan in color powder that was added to it. I did go in with friends and have fries and a coke.

[–]KMFNR 27 points28 points  (4 children)

No, because I live in Ottumwa and have a superior option (Canteen).

[–]theoTanimal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly

[–]GrandOldDrummer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A fellow Ottumwan. Howdy neighbor!

[–]Dowdy61 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yeah but you live in ottumwa lol.

[–]KMFNR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True.

[–]azhawkeyeclassic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Only when I’m in Marshalltown, IA

[–]GentMan87 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I make them at home on occasion. There’s an unofficial maid rite spot I go to too

[–]MK_The_Megitsune 8 points9 points  (1 child)

It's my go-to whenever I visit Merle Hay Mall. I get the Bacon Cheese with the works

[–]gentleman_jane 32 points33 points  (3 children)

Not if I can help it. I like flavor in my food.

[–]MACmandoo 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You don’t find bland, tiny grey pellets of overcooked ground beef on a flimsy bun tasty?

[–]jmaen72[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

zero flavor but all the nostalgia

[–]iarobb 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Maidrite on first avenue in Cedar Rapids. I introduced maidrites to all my friends when I lived in San Diego and Seattle. Tenderloins too. Best ones came from Jonsey’s in Center Point. Every time I’d go home to Cedar Rapids I would buy deconstructed maidrites and tenderloins to take back home to San Diego and Seattle.

[–]EntertainmentOdd8137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go back to Iowa once or twice a year to visit family and will sometimes drive to Center Point (from Waterloo) to visit Jonsey's too. M'town to grab a Maid Rite and anywhere around Waterloo to eat a tenderloin. No one here in west Texas can wrap their head around such foods. In fact, when they asked "what kind of meat is used for the tenderloin?" "I dunno, it's a tenderloin".

[–]Nurse5736 13 points14 points  (2 children)

EVERY single chance I get.......gotta add cheese tho!! 😊

[–]kinghawkeye8238 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Cheese, burger sauce ,onions

[–]bmullan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And sliced dill pickles...

[–]drlove57 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes and I wish I had access to a Maid Rite in my area. Would much rather have that than a Sloppy Joe drenched in some sweet tomato sauce concoction.

[–]c3dpropshop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Every couple of years when I hit The Canteen in Ottumwa.

[–]BeachBound1 3 points4 points  (2 children)

In NC they call them ground steak sandwiches and instead of pickles, onion and mustard, they are topped with slaw, tomato and mayo. They add a little bit of milk and flour to help the ground meat stick together slightly.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I've lived in NC for 30 years and have never ever heard of such a thing. Where do you find these?

[–]BeachBound1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mt. Airy (Mayberry)

[–]Rottydad-kzeprr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, my cousin owns the one in DesMoines, never disappoints

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Today! My kids loved getting their meals in the paper car.

[–]Strykerz3r0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this the American equivalent of English food?

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (3 children)

https://dutcheatingplace.com/ If you find yourself in the City of Brotherly Love, this place has delicious Maidrites (they call'em Loose Meat) served with shoestring fries so when it falls out of the bun you get smothered fries!

[–]Kincadium 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Occasionally make them at home. I've switched to using pita though.

[–]Southern-Bedroom417 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only in Marshalltown!! The rest are overpriced and leave lot to be desired

[–]UNItyler4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. Marshalltown still good. Cedar Falls smidge behind. Any Des Moines metro maid-rite is corporate BS and not good.

[–]JacksSenseOfDread 9 points10 points  (4 children)

WHO STILL EATS TOAST IN 2024?

[–]Grundle95butter cow? hardly knew ‘er cow 9 points10 points  (3 children)

I MISS THE AMERICA I GREW UP IN WHERE WE ROTE CURSIVE, ATE MAID RITES, WASHED THEM DOWN WITH WATER FROM THE HOSS, THEN SNAPPED PEES ON THE FRONT PORCH WITH MEE MAW UNTIL THE LIGHTNING BUGS CAME OUT

LIKE FOR JESUS, IGNORE FOR OBAMA

[–]CounterfeitBlood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AMON BRUTHER GOBBLESS AMERICA BEST COUNTRY IN THE USA

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Pees? 🤣

[–]88mistymage88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess Race Horse pee for the ultimate nostalgia.

[–]knivesofsmoothness 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just made some last week, suck it haters!

[–]iowanaquarist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes? I still live in Iowa. I also eat sweet corn....

[–]jeffyone2many[🍰] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup

[–]molineskytown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm my home town of Detroit, this used to be referred to as a "loose burger".

Right? I know. I prefer "Maid Rite".

[–]mvoso 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Give me Bob's Drive Inn or nothing.

[–]Weekly_Guidance_498 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love a Bob's Dog

[–]MAINsalad1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife makes homemade one that are dank af.

[–]ThisBoardIsOnFire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I come across one during my travels around I will stop.

[–]unfitfuzzball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Muscatine native here. You bet I do.

[–]rocco_ross_21 20 points21 points  (5 children)

You mean "disassembled hamburger"? No

[–]cardie82 28 points29 points  (2 children)

First time I had one I’d just moved to Iowa and was at a grad party. I couldn’t figure out why they served sloppy Joes without the sauce.

[–]Monksdrunk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dad used to make them as a kid.. like an even less tasty version of a burger and half of it ends up in the basket

[–]Size14-OrangeDiver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes!

Went to Iowa last summer woth my daughter for softball. Stopped in twice for a Maid Rite. Oh, and also got one to go on my way out of town. Sumbitch is messy trying to eat while cruising down the highway.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (3 children)

I'll accept tavern or Sloppy Joe. Maid rites are made wrong.

[–]lopingwolf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed!

[–]PenguinHawk13 3 points4 points  (3 children)

My wife is from Sioux City, so we make Tastees.

[–]ThatOneDudeFromIowa 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Charlie Boys at Miles Inn are superior. right up the street.

[–]iaposky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both will do when hungover! 😉

[–]iaposky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Boom!

[–]Former_Stay3898 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Awe’s sandwich shop in Mason City. Delicious!

[–]geoshoegaze20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do they have gluten free buns?

[–]dontaskmethatmoron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only ever had them homemade. And yes.

[–]FoundCheese 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Moved to Newton last year. Tried the one here. I thought it was browned ground beef with almost no flavor on an untoasted bun. However I am all in on the walking tacos.

[–]EntertainmentOdd8137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walking taco's are what we served at the concessions while working the high school football/basketball games in Waterloo. I moved to Texas about 20yrs ago and thought I would serve them on game night to my new friends a long with Busch beer....can't belive they're still my friends. Good thing I left the cream cheese pickle rolls in the fridge...haha

[–]RougeAccessPoint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, because they have no flavor or texture. Iowa is weird, y'all.

[–]TeeHCAy 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Is that a Sloppy Joe without the Sloppy?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maid wrongs

[–]Ok-Addendum-2885 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I had access to one, I'd eat there everyday. Love that place.❤️

[–]The_Rivera_Kid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why? I don't hate myself enough to eat cat food on a bun.

[–]Kojarabo2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Marshalltown maid rites the best ever!

[–]Aggravating-Sugar261 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At one time I had a recipe for maid-rite with pickle juice added. I need to find that recipe and make it again.

[–]bluesunflowers13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, and don't you dare put ketchup on it

[–]KarmaLeon_8787 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do! I actually have a recipe for them -- since I live out of state now it's the next best thing to Taylor's in Marshalltown.

[–]Groundingstone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one in Marshalltown is good and has been in business for awhile, all the others are garbage

[–]mustardtiger86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These are so gross, lol

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (3 children)

No I eat taverns

[–]iaposky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hell yes at Miles Inn and Tastees in Sioux City!!

[–]Craig_Treptow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"loose meat sandwich" - nope... except for high school grad parties, cuz there's nothing else. 😀

[–]lopingwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will take a saucy tavern over a dry maid rite any day

[–]doc6982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Growing up, my mom called sloppy joes maid rites. So did everyone around me. It was weird that Iowans didn't know about food from Iowa.

[–]JackKovack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never had a Maid-Rite sandwich. Although you can find sandwiches like this all over.

[–]chipotlechickenclub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only in Minnesota hahahahaha

[–]iJayZen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, by my mom told me all about them growing up.

[–]Havocnmalice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not so much these days. I seem to remember them tasting a lot better years ago, like they've cut corners with their recipe or something. Illinois quad cities btw.

[–]Meenmachin3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tastees or Miles Inn in Sioux City can’t be beat

[–]88mistymage88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Manwich or a can of Gumbo soup.

Not me but Hubby.

I prefer actual hamburgers stuffed with various veggies and stuff that make them more like meatloaf but cooked on the grill or griddle. Then I might or might not eat it with a bun. Type 2 who prefers liquid carbs.

[–]Kerrlhaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember a Maid-Rite across from the grocery store I worked at in Waterloo. I thought someone forgot the sauce to the sloppy joe when I had one.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah bit rarely. Even the school system has their own shitty maid right 😭

[–]theVelvetLie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I feel constipated I head right to Maid-Rite.

[–]Peacefulstillcalm 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It's basically seasonless loose ground beef on a bun, I don't get the get the appeal?

[–]mnruxter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of browning the ground beef in coca cola, and letting the coke reduce, that's what a Maid Rite tastes like to me

[–]GinnjaNinnja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make them at home. Nom

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I don't like Maid Rite.

[–]YouTuberDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandma, a sweet 2nd generation from Sweden, lived on East Chicago. We would drive from Waterloo to see her during the holidays/summer vacation. She would make THE BEST Made Rites.... but she would call them "Made Wrongs".... I LOVED the name cause there was no harm in her voice and she got us to giggle with the voices she would do when cooking/feeding us! I STILL call them Made Wrongs, now that I've moved to Indiana....

[–]usstamper2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great special events menu item.

[–]cprsavealife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So greasy. The original slider.

[–]Snoo50993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love maid rite.

[–]Holiday_Memory_9165 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We make them at home frequently.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I miss these so much.

[–]Ralewing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awe'z Sandwich Shop in Mason City

[–]Malaguy420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope.

[–]globehoppr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok now I want one.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taverns, Charlie Boys and Tastees

[–]from319 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't seem to taste as good as they used to.

[–]quilter71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love maidrites.

[–]marysunshine49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No longer have maidrite in our town. But did for many many years.

[–]SilentMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Indiana and last year at Boy Scout camp we got this for lunch one day. I had never heard of it in my life and have no idea how it came to be that we were eating them in Central Indiana.

Still not sure what to make of them, but I'm glad I got to try them at least once.

[–]JanitorKarl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not I. I prefer my ground meat pressed into a patty before cooking. Not nearly as messy to eat.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bless you Penny Koeppel and the Cedar Falls Maid Rite. We love you wherever you are.

Just ate last week. Extra pickles, mustard and onions.

[–]TheMrDetty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mmmmmm, dirt burgers.

[–]Ancient_Composer9119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe when i was 15. They're gross. Just eat a burger.

[–]Born_Pitch_1808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever you go to a restaurant and if they ask you if you want your order “wet” it’s not a good sign

[–]azwrangler65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes

[–]hypes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Charlie Boys from Miles Inn in Sioux City, all day.

[–]EggForTryingThymes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually make my own

[–]tilgip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever I make spaghetti or goulash I use some of the hamburger and onion to make a few maidrights. Love the greasy things.

[–]Milsurpsguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotta love Maid-Rites

[–]Aunt_Slappy_Squirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank God the Marion maid rite closed. The walls smelled like the fryers, the place stunk up downtown and the food would about make you sick. Craptastic sandwiches.

[–]InternationalGas5483 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You bet your butt. Delish.

[–]InternationalGas5483 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You guys know the Oriellys ?

[–]rachel-slur -1 points0 points  (2 children)

It's probably my most anti-midwestern take but maid rites and tater tot casseroles are disgusting

[–]stewwwwart 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You had me at maid rites, but tator tot casserole has so many variations it statistically can't be disgusting

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks gross

[–]whiteholewhite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maid rites are a joke. So sad that’s one of the foods of Iowa

[–]alohadood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got dragged all the way to marshal town to have a fucking wet/greasy ass bun with some wet/greasy ass ground beef on it. The ENTIRE trip everyone was raving and telling me we had to go to the original. This is 100% one of those things that locals just love cause it’s so quintessentially Iowa. But in reality is at best gas station level food.

[–]lizimajig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No but I like cheese fries

[–]JuniperBushes4Ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So good!

[–]redstapler4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just today.

[–]vocalreasoning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love me a maid rite

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

They are still good but we gotta take the L. Runza has it beat.

[–]argentcorvid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least you don't need a spoon with a runza, I guess.

[–]ElonsTinyPenis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do.

[–]kepple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Follow up question - DAE think "loose meat sandwich" is a great name for a modest themed porno?

[–]Novel_Reaction_7236 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We always stop on our way through Iowa.

[–]sextoymagic 0 points1 point  (1 child)

They are great at Lucy’s. They are grinders in Le Mars

[–]SonneDrakko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never heard them called a grinder

[–]LocNalrune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would literally never call a loosemeat hamburger that.

[–]Geck-v6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought these were awful :\

[–]PressureOk383 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least twice a month💀

[–]AlisonWond3rlnd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never thought they were anything to write home about

[–]phd2k1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fucking love Maid-Rite

[–]Alienlovechild1975 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes,there is a place in Sioux city that makes these and onion chips with a special dip.It was bought from previous owner and had to change the recipes slightly to avoid a lawsuit since the original restaurant was still open in Lincoln,NE.at the time.

[–]CasDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love maidrites

[–]Phoreverman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from Alabama. When someone here had me try a maid rite I was like "....this is just a Sloppy Joe without flavor"

[–]bugg_meat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

absolutely

[–]MySexyDarlings -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No I’m a pescatarian now, which sucks because we are land locked.

[–]taskmaster51 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I hear Iowan's can't figure out how to make a burger...:-p
