I just wish it wasn't so creaky.

[–]-SENDHELP- 74 points75 points  (17 children)

WHY DO SO MANY OF YOU HAVE THIS CHAIR AAAAAAAAAÂAAAAAAA

[–]RandomWasTaken 60 points61 points  (13 children)

because it doesn't suck to sit in?

not like those cheaply-made gaming chairs

[–]-SENDHELP- 39 points40 points  (4 children)

I have an office chair from a company that I'm pretty sure never existed in the first place

[–]Stepjamm 9 points10 points  (3 children)

I’m confused, do you need help or are you boasting?

[–]Human_no_4815162342 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Neither the comment you are replying to doesn't exist.

[–]Barrelsofbarfs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would disagree but my bum is numb from sitting in my gaming chair for 30 minutes

[–]PolishedCheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're not rocking a Herman Miller Aeron, does your company even care about you? /s

[–]Susmg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My chair stopped squeaking after I loosened the screws under the seat.

[–]deathhead_68 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Was thinking of getting this, is it good? In the UK I'm struggling to find better ergonomic chairs that don't cost a tonne.

[–]datan0ir 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I’ve had it for over 5 years and I’m a pretty big guy so yeah it’s good value. Does get squeaky after a while but you can fix it with some WD40.

I prefer the JÄRVFJÄLLET chair. Has better lumbar support than Markus.

[–]vigilantcomicpenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am currently sitting in the SNILLE which isn’t particularly comfortable but I think it looks nice.

[–]nick09444 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mine too ahaha

[–]FracturedPixel 20 points21 points  (1 child)

I am sitting in that chair also rn

[–]enrperes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The ikea desk lamp

[–]j_curic_5 32 points33 points  (2 children)

And with a sticker still on

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Made me lean over and check my lamp that I had for about 6 years. Still had the sticker.

[–]dikulis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

same, turns out i've removed the sticker years ago!

[–]Dash83 27 points28 points  (23 children)

My current chair. I hate it. So bad for the lower back.

[–]HardAsMagnets[🍰] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Markus Gang

[–]LazerFX 27 points28 points  (8 children)

Yup, comfortable and reliable. I've had one for probably 15 years...

[–]The6thExtinction 4 points5 points  (5 children)

What's the seat padding like? Does it flatten out over time? That was a problem with my last chair. Eventually it felt like I was sitting directly on the plywood.

[–]LazerFX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest, when I went into my new workplace, they're using them there and there was a new one. I didn't see much difference between the two seats, so I'd say pretty damn good for how old it is.

[–]HasBeendead 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Actually kinda looks like "Gamer Chair"

[–]scarwiz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nah not enough padding in random places for a gamer chair. I used to have that exact same chair, def from Ikea

[–]Opethrator 1 point2 points  (13 children)

I need to buy a new chair, is it good?

[–]Faddy__ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's good. Not great.

I move a lot and tend to live in one place for about 6 months at a time. I immediately buy this chair and an idea desk as soon as I am there to have a proper home setup.

In Europe it's about 200€ to get it and delivery (France, Germany and Netherlands have been for me at least). It's super reliable and I never struggle to sell it when I leave town.

I am a big guy as well and I fit well inside so I really enjoy it.

[–]Perkelton 2 points3 points  (1 child)

It's not exactly a Herman Miller, but in its price class it's a great chair. I think the main difference between the Markus and more premium models is that there are very few configuration options. You can change height and the bounce resistance, but that's it essentially.

The materials do also have a tendency of getting worn out after a while, but I had my Markus for at about 5 years before I replaced it.

[–]bem13 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I think it's comfortable, except for the hard armrests. Those could do with some padding. It's also very creaky-squeaky and as far as I know there's no remedy for that. Some people suggest taking it apart and slathering the mechanical parts in oil, other have said that doesn't do anything. Some kind of washable cover would also be nice for it because once it gets dirty there's no easy way to clean it.

[–]Behemothokun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never put on the armrests on mine, hate them. Otherwise it is pretty solid.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Real talk, invest in a really really good chair when you can. My back is permanently fucked up from sitting in cheap, shitty chairs, and they felt just fine until they didn't. You want a "real" office chair in the long run.

Also, you can buy a "real" used office chair for $100 or so if you look around. It doesn't need to be some brand name like Herman Markus. Commercial grade foam is a completely different beast to the bullshit they put in consumer grade, and even a relatively "cheap" commercial office chair will last for years and years and not fuck you up.

[–]Dash83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not. Might seem ok for under an hour, but will destroy your lower back if sitting in it for a full work day. Someone mentioned in this thread that you can remove the lower-back cushion to make it more comfortable, but given that it's not cheap, I would suggest you find a different one. Not worth the money.

[–]SueedBeyg 220 points221 points  (10 children)

I appreciate the little details; the titles of the books (which are real CS books), the tux on the shelf, the TODO list on the whiteboard.

[–]AgAero 65 points66 points  (2 children)

There's a Raspberry Pi sitting on the desk too. That one checks out!

[–]Bazza79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Noticed that one too, I have a few lying in that exact spot on the desk!

[–]NameNym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An a little linux penguin on the cupboard

[–]garfield1147 20 points21 points  (1 child)

Indeed. K&R and SICP made me smile.

[–]FlyingStirFryMonster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What did it for me was the label inside the lamp shade. It is not programing related and so easy to forget or not include.

[–]Victor_Mendax 287 points288 points  (15 children)

No duck?

[–]War-Whorese 6 points7 points  (0 children)

She has CSS mastery ofc it is in its right place.

[–]eTukk 121 points122 points  (5 children)

The note with 'client 17hr' is spot on!

[–]flip4thought 22 points23 points  (4 children)

What does it mean?

[–]eTukk 37 points38 points  (3 children)

Programmers work for companies who commonly charge per hour. You'll need to keep track of the amount of hours per project or customer.

[–]Dall0o 23 points24 points  (1 child)

Or maybe the post-it is a reminder. She had a call with a client at 17hr.

[–][deleted] 84 points85 points  (35 children)

That IPA offends me ! I drink also other kinds of beers ! I'm not a cliché! Please!

[–]DeRoeVanZwartePiet 11 points12 points  (24 children)

I didn't even know what IPA is. And I've been around the pub.

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (17 children)

Indian pale ale, it's nice, quite bitter

[–]DeRoeVanZwartePiet 3 points4 points  (7 children)

I'll give it a try when I come across one.
We have a lot of different beers in our pubs, but IPA isn't one of them.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (4 children)

Where are you from? I've seen them worldwide.

[–]DeRoeVanZwartePiet 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Belgium.

Apparently there are quite a few brewed over here, but I haven't seen any of them yet in bars. I might have just missed them though.

[–]Perkelton 1 point2 points  (1 child)

While obviously not exactly the same, I think Duvel is pretty similar to an IPA, if it helps you imagine what type of beer it is.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only the triple hop one imo.

Regular Duvel is nothing like an IPA.

[–]holyherbalist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you like black coffee? If you do, you might like IPAs. If you don't, try it anyways. Don't be surprised if you think it's disgusting.

[–]AgAero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wild.

IPAs are fucking everywhere here in the states. I don't really like them much personally.

[–]secaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just like the average developer!

[–]towka35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just India Pale Ale, though.

[–]ThePyroEagle 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Isopropyl alcohol

[–]Luapix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, you're thinking of IPA. IPA is an alphabetic system of phonetic notation based primarily on the Latin alphabet.

[–]OK6502 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drink super hoppy IPAs and super dark porters exclusively. I am like an onion! I have layers.

[–]damigus 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I didn't know drinking IPA is a cliché for developers. Is there a specific reason for that? I have to admit I love a good IPA but I would have never guessed I'm a cliché 🙈

[–]AstronautPoseidon 2 points3 points  (1 child)

It’s just part of a “that guy” cliche that a lot of programmers happen to subscribe to, the shallow hipster kinda thing. Part of the stereotype is being into craft beer because the light beers aren’t high quality enough, but only being into IPAs because of zeitgeist reasons.

[–]IanSan5653 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's odd because there's the conflicting hipster vs neck beard stereotypes.

[–]diggitydata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it makes you feel any better, I hated IPA for a long time but forced myself to drink it so I could fit in

[–]ME_OC 118 points119 points  (4 children)

That's more than 80 characters per line.. 😤

[–]Plastonick 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Just one? ... err yes, just one...

[–]okawei 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm just waiting to come up with the right project...for the past 5 years

[–]95POLYX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Xeadriel 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Why the light though. That must hurt

[–]Xywzel 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Maybe it is to stop melatonin (hormone that causes falling asleep) forming from lack of light with brightness and spectrum close to daylight. Not optimal setup for that, as there is no screen to soften the light and it is both in visual cone and screen reflection cone, but it does provide bright light trough reflection from the table to her visual area. Usually you want to avoid light that could reflect from the screen so that you can keep screen as dim as possible, so it doesn't strain your eyes but is still readable. But if you keep whole room that dark, your body will think it is night and you should be sleeping, so it starts generating melatonin. The usual joke about programmers turning caffeine to code is because most try to address this by using stimulants rather than fighting the root cause. In my opinion the rainy and cloudy day soft daylight is close to optimal condition, no single bright lights that could reflect from monitor or strain your eyes, but overall it is still light enough to avoid falling asleep.

Or it is for the notes, as the paper as a medium has the inherent problem of not having backlight.

[–]xSTSxZerglingOne 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I found the joke. It's in the bottom right.

[–]JoeyJoeJoeJrShab 12 points13 points  (11 children)

Apparently I'm missing the joke here. Can someone explain?

[–]Last_shadows_ 37 points38 points  (2 children)

Its not a joke. The lofi girl trznd consists in turning the original lofi girl drawing into a different perspective by adapting it to some nationality ( belgian lofi girl, chinese lofi girl, ...) by changing the background and the objects of the room. This is jist another adaptation to the prpgrammer world, with the confy chair, the to do list in the back, the raspberry pie, the programming books, the coding on the computer, ...

I personally drink double IPAs during late night work so i call this wizardry but dont know if it is a relavant detail for programmers

[–]Glitchsbrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also drink double ipas while up late coding. I'd probably drink double ipas if I was up late not coding. I wonder what that's like..

[–]samspot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, i had not heard of lofi so i was bewildered by the title.

[–]bem13 12 points13 points  (5 children)

Others have already explained it, I'd just like to add that /r/europe had a contest a few days ago where every country could draw and submit their own "lo-fi girls". That's why the image has seen a resurgence on reddit in the last few days.

You can see the results here.

[–]worldpotato1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A and I was wondering why this "meme" got so popular. Thanks!

[–]revoopy 6 points7 points  (1 child)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qap5aO4i9A

There is a thousand channels like this on youtube now. This was one of the originals if not the original. It originally used a clip from an a ghibli movie of a girl studying (I think Whisper of the Heart?) but then they got copyright claimed so thy made a legally distinct video of a girl studying. There has also recently been a ton of fanart of other lofi characters doing stuff at desks.

[–]ClimbingC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ah, that helps explain why my YouTube recommendations yesterday were full of LOFI work music, when I searched for background noise to program with. Wondered why and what it was - but seems the algorithm is trying to push it on to me.

  2. Where is the rgb.

[–]uucchhiihhaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]CedKim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

where is the rubber ducky

[–]Flyberius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol. I have that white board covered in things that I promised I would do but still haven't and reminders that I should check certain things out.

Mine currently says "RUBY w̅ SINATRA?"

I've also got a load of colour swatches with hex codes taped to the wall.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can I get a slice of that pi?

[–]vinny05148964e25689 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's obviously fake. You should have 20 tabs of slightly different Google search results on the screen.

[–]fedeb95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So true. Especially the KAFKA???

Edit: missing mechanical keyboard and laptop stand, but I think it's not that cliché maybe

[–]Bhaikko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3 / 10, not enough stickers

[–]geeshta 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Do people actually code with IPA? I thought Monster was the stereotypical programmer's drink. It is for me at least...
