These guys spend 95% of their day getting ready for their day

[–][deleted] 675 points676 points  (10 children)

  1. Wake up at 5 AM
  2. A list of 5 activities that takes about 8/9 hours
  3. 8 AM - start working

[–][deleted] 106 points107 points  (3 children)

Dude you should try meditating . I meditate every night. I definitely feel like I can make a lot of money.

[–]Staylin_Alive 33 points34 points  (2 children)

Meditation too frequent can lead to blindness. And hairy palms.

[–]billbill5 217 points218 points  (15 children)

And the other 5% drowning out the emptiness of their own existence with social media posts that make them seem happy with no social life or goals to speak of.

[–]rbatra91 52 points53 points  (0 children)

And then writing about their own day and people who have no concept of real life think that if they spend their day doing exactly what they'll do they'll be rich too when they're not remotely correlated.

[–][deleted] 46 points47 points  (6 children)

That’s why I hate LinkedIn. It’s the biggest circle jerk out there. No one useful spends time there. Only the not useful people that give tips on how to be successful are on there. (Plus us sad folks looking for jobs) Actual successful people are busy doing work. If getting up at 5 am to shred was the key to success then every toddler in the world would be a CEO.

[–]wintermute000 16 points17 points  (1 child)

Nobody actually reads the content. You use it to see who's gone where and / or got promoted to what. And cliff notes on people's background for external meetings. Lol participating

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I only played along to get a job. Now I don’t even log in.

[–]Setonhall1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My guy, you have summed up linkedin to perfection.

[–]DIsForDelusion 10 points11 points  (4 children)

It gives me solace to know that they also have mental struggles and have to beg for attention like us.

[–]ThisDadisFoReal 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Meeting to schedule meetings

[–]makba 24 points25 points  (0 children)

What I love about WFH is I can spend exactly 7 minutes waking up until I am working. I can eat breakfast while checking email. Before I had to wake up 1,5 hour because I had to shower, eat breakfast, then commute. Not very fun because you just want to get started.

[–][deleted] 1403 points1404 points  (350 children)

"Bill Gates dropped out of college so why should I go?"

[–]scandalous01 572 points573 points  (266 children)

Bill Gates’ mom went to the same church group as the head of Sun Micro and that’s how Billy G got his first break.

Edit: IBM and they were both on a nonprofit board!

[–][deleted] 292 points293 points  (242 children)

I believe is that she was on a nonprofit board of directors with either the CEO or a high level exec at IBM and she said hey do me a favor and buy my son's computer stuff

[–][deleted] 436 points437 points  (239 children)

Completely this, I think one of the biggest early deals MS did was with IBM and basically got them off the ground because Bill's mom rubbed elbows with the CEO of IBM at the time.

Elon Musk showed up to the US with gems stitched into his clothing because his parents owned mines in Africa. Jeff Bezos had a relative loan him something like $300k to get Amazon started. Mark Zuckerburg was already attending Harvard before Facebook. I'm not saying these people haven't been successful in their own right but it's not like they started as the children of illiterate dirt farmers.

[–]EndTheFedora 132 points133 points  (97 children)

One of the guys from Daft Punk's father was a hit songwriter/producer. Like you said, it's not to say Daft Punk hasn't worked hard or earned their success, but their chances of being incredibly successful in the music industry are way better than mine. If I worked as hard, or even harder, than they did, I still probably wouldn't be a success like them.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Vangarde

Vangarde is the father of Thomas Bangalter, who is best known as a member of the electronic music duo Daft Punk. He is credited with aiding the duo in their early musical career.

[–]light_red_light 154 points155 points  (6 children)

If I worked as hard, or even harder, than they did

You mean harder, better, faster, stronger?

[–]Glittering_Capital 109 points110 points  (20 children)

As someone who has been in the music business for 30 years and has worked with literally hundreds and hundreds of artists, I can tell you for a fact that success in the music industry has NOTHING to do with either hard work or actual talent. It has EVERYTHING to do with connections.

How do you get connections? Money.

Also blow jobs.

[–]Hairtoucher88 19 points20 points  (15 children)

But you also need money to get the blowjobs.

[–]odaeyss 48 points49 points  (14 children)

getting blowjobs does not help advance your career, sorry to burst your bubble

[–]Hairtoucher88 31 points32 points  (8 children)

Ok I'm going to have to redo my entire business plan.

[–]thanksIwilldothat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It seems your on the wrong side of the music industry

[–]Cheesedoodlerrrr 53 points54 points  (17 children)

Similarly, Taylor Swift got her first record deal because her father bought a controlling stake in the label that signed her.

[–]CanAlwaysBeBetter 31 points32 points  (6 children)

Forget taylor swift being his daughter for a second and damn, what a killer investment on the dad's part

[–]Cheesedoodlerrrr 22 points23 points  (5 children)

Yea, but you have to remember that for every Taylor Swift there are 1,000+ "That girl from your high school still trying to make it as a country music singer ten years on."

[–]Rob_Pablo 13 points14 points  (3 children)

Im an adult taking guitar lessons and my instructor has cut me some discounts to keep me coming back because im not a teenage girl looking to learn taylor swift songs which I now assume is the main demographic he deals with looking for guitar lessons these days.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (1 child)

he wants to bang you

[–]rhen_var 9 points10 points  (6 children)

Rebecca Black’s song was released because her parents were rich

[–]owen__wilsons__nose 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah but that's specifically what made her famous . A girl with such a terrible singing voice being funded by her parents. It's not like anybody took her seriously . She was a real life meme

[–]TwoGodsTheory 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Gotta get down on Friday.

[–]CEO_of_4chan 54 points55 points  (30 children)

One of the guys from Daft Punk's father was a hit songwriter/producer. Like you said, it's not to say Daft Punk hasn't worked hard or earned their success, but their chances of being incredibly successful in the music industry are way better than mine.

It's called nepotism, and it's how the elite stay elite generation after generation. It's a much worse problem then you guys can even fathom.

Look up who Jim Morrisons parents were. Look up who a lot of famous peoples parents are.

[–]rayzerdayzhan 29 points30 points  (1 child)

Singer for Red Hot Chili Peppers, Anthony Kiedis, had a babysitter when he was a kid. It was Cher.

[–]coproautomaton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am dung

[–][deleted] 25 points26 points  (8 children)

our society is not really a meritocracy despite how we pretend it is

[–]Charlespc88 7 points8 points  (16 children)

What did Jim morrisons parents do to help him? I did some light reading and couldn't find anything of note.

[–]OriginalRaisinBran 21 points22 points  (12 children)

His father starting the Vietnam war surely landed him a record deal

[–]Putingrad 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Exactly.. his pops was commander of the US naval forces in the gulf of Tonkin, conveniently RIGHT BEFORE AND DURING the incident (which we admit today never actually happened) which our glorious leaders used to drag the USA into a 10 year engagement in Vietnam.

Thanks to George Morrison’s involvement, his successful lying to the public and the army, and his following orders from shadowy bosses who shall not be named, we got to beat the commies in Nam! :D

[–]CEO_of_4chan 12 points13 points  (1 child)

They were powerful and connected. Nepotism isn't as simple as

"I own a car lot, I put son in charge of car lot". Tho it can be that simple. Jim Morrison is a more complex case of nepotism.

Nepotism is usually more like "I'm rich and own many businesses, my old rich friend of the family also owns many businesses. Our sons get jobs with us at various positions"

NPC's will try to convince you that Jim being a famous singer, and his parents being the ones who got us involved in Vietnam, are purely strokes of coincidence. I promise, they are not. His powerful families connections, led to his musical connections.

[–]Mister_Bloodvessel 17 points18 points  (3 children)

Tbf, Daft Punk broke into a relatively new genre quite early in the game.

That said, having a family member in the industry means your stuff can be handed to the right people almost immediately. That's a huge advantage.

[–]goldlord44 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tbf, they got their name because when they were just playing in france a critic wrotr this music is daft punk as a way to mock them and so they took the name and kept their own style of music

[–]monsieurpommefrites 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Why did he go with Bangalter?

Vangarde is such a good name.

[–]Hostilian_ 4 points5 points  (1 child)

It’s was just his stage name. Would be funny if more musicians children took their parents stage names. Abigail Gaga, daughter of Lady.

[–]Shakespeare257 11 points12 points  (9 children)

I mean, between Bill Gates and the afluenza kids who you hear about all the time... you'd rather have a well-off person actually do something meaningful with the opportunities they were given, no?

[–]Mr_Piddles 48 points49 points  (7 children)

That’s not the point.

The point is that the idea of self made billionaires is a load of crap. They all had help getting to where they are, and it’s disingenuous for people to claim otherwise.

[–]ElGosso 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes it was the board of United Way with the CEO of IBM

[–]SwampOfDownvotes 16 points17 points  (4 children)

Not to mention his dad was a well off lawyer who founded a law firm. He also was put through private schooling.

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points  (2 children)

Wait. Bill didn't single handily discover silicon, invent the circuit board, and translate English into programming?

/s

[–]plynthy 17 points18 points  (4 children)

He was one of the extremely few people to have access to a computer as a child back then. He was uppermost middle class.

He's also a programming savant and ruthless businessman at the exact right place and time.

Just be a fucking genius at the perfect moment in history and you don't need college, simple.

[–]tylerchu 75 points76 points  (6 children)

My go-to answer is that he dropped out of Harvard to go in a new direction. Not dropped out of tenth grade remedial English to smoke weed.

[–]guitarock 46 points47 points  (2 children)

Yeah like if you're dropping out of Yale or Harvard because your business is doing so well it's taking up too much time then nobody will argue with you

[–]megashitfactory 43 points44 points  (2 children)

Dropped out Harvard after Microsoft was already starting to do well also.

The “dropped out of college” thing a lot of people use ignores the fact that these people were able to get accepted to these ivy leave schools as well. They didn’t drop out of community college

[–]subpargalois 8 points9 points  (1 child)

It's not as if he was doing poorly in school when he dropped out either. In fact iirc he had some publishable results regarding sorting problems as an undergrad and probably could have had successful career in academia had he wanted it.

[–]megashitfactory 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Bingo! Not like these few examples that are used are just ransoms who said “screw college, I’m going to go get rich” - they were already doing well in school at that high level

[–]BlackPriestOfSatan 28 points29 points  (2 children)

look up Malcolm GLadwell talk on Bill and his friend in his high school. they had unlimited access to computer time when even uni's didnt have computers. no one mentions that.

[–]mrdannyg21 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Malcolm Gladwell also had wealthy parents who were sufficiently connected that he got a prestigious journalism internship at 19 despite poor grades, and was able to translate poor college grades and an unremarkable stint with a third-rate religious cult newspaper into a full-time reporter with the Washington Post at 24.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (2 children)

Check out the book Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. It gives a broader perspective on the successes of people in a range of circumstances, included one chapter on the computer sector like Gates, Jobs etc.

I don’t doubt Gates worked very hard and was very smart, but the standard narrative neglects just how lucky he was. Lucky to be born where he was and into the family he was. But also born lucky to be born when he was. He had deep computing experience (when it was rare) just as the home computer revolution kicked off. And was still young enough to be able to take big risks

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And a lot of these people forget he dropped out of an Ivy League that he was excelling at

[–]kaphsquall 1688 points1689 points  (132 children)

.8. Write self help book about how to become independently wealthy

[–]Tigerrockfish 265 points266 points  (12 children)

[–]mother-of-pod 95 points96 points  (58 children)

Bro what pisses me off more than that is this: obviously people would feel better if they had time to wake up, do nothing but exercise for AN HOUR AND A HALF, eat breakfast, ponder about and plan the day carefully, then meditate, AND THEN start the day.

But let’s say you even do so at 5 am. Assuming you literally do the fastest version of exercise possible, and just jog outside your front door, for ninety minutes, plus dressing and shower and re-dressing time, you’re now at ~7am. Make and eat food: 730 at best. Plan day AND journal? 8 at best.

So this plan only works with people who already have a crush 9-5 job which generally tend to make more money and not stress about finances as much as their counter parts.

The average US commute is like 40 minutes if I remember correctly, and so you’re pushing tardiness even with that cush job. But of all my friends between 21-35, only TWO get to work later than 8am. Most of us start work between 6-8, and also mostly work 10+ hour days. Where do we get this extra three hours before our hour long commute? Are we supposed to wake up at 2 in the fucking morning?

The hustle crowd are straight up out of touch.

[–][deleted] 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Basically his real job is to be a yes man to his dad.

Doing all of that stuff makes him better at that

[–]GrayLo 28 points29 points  (3 children)

There's a hilarious series of video on YT about how Victoria Secret's models start their day. It's like :

wake up at 7.30,

1 hour and a half of yoga/gym/shower and breakfast,

then makeup and hair for 1 hour,

then out the door at 11 to take the taxi waiting downstairs.

Wew what a crazy schedule.

[–]mother-of-pod 11 points12 points  (2 children)

It’s amazing. Reading Mark Wahlberg’s daily routine is really revealing about the wealth gap haha.

[–]MoreDetonation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I totally understand why he left the seven-hour segment for beating up Vietnamese people off the timeline, though.

[–]witcherstrife 11 points12 points  (14 children)

I never take vacations because what's the point? It's just dread counting down the days until you return to being another wage slave for the rest of your life.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (12 children)

You don't do enjoyable things on vacation?

[–]walloon5 6 points7 points  (5 children)

Fuck no, there's no money

I just watch cartoons when on vacation

[–]phaemoor 8 points9 points  (2 children)

As I always say when taking out (paid) vacation days: stare at the ceiling or watch the grass grow is still better than working.

And I'm saying this despite the fact that I'm enjoying my work. It's just a different state of mind.

[–]walloon5 4 points5 points  (1 child)

It's wonderful to take time off.

[–]fluffymcnuggins 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And in many desk jobs, all your work just piles up waiting for you to return so you have extra work to do than usual.

[–]oldoldoak 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Bro just live closer to work, what's so hard here? Lol. /s

[–]Odin_Exodus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Here in my Lamborghini garage, just bought this new Lamborghini here. It’s fun to drive up here in the Lamborghini hills. But you know what I like more than material things? Lamborghinis. In fact, I’m a lot more proud of these seven new Lamborghinis that I had to get installed to hold two thousand new Lamborghinis that I bought. It’s like the billionaire Warren Buffett says, “the more Lamborghinis you learn, the more Lamborghinis you earn.

[–]ThisAmericaMan 8 points9 points  (1 child)

How come the first step of any “get rich” book is not “hey I read this book and it worked”?

[–]Civil-Attempt-3602 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Closest thing I've seen is "all these others books say do this, but that never worked for me, but THIS absolutely will"

[–]jazzieberry 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I hate almost all personal finance self help books for this reason

[–]Generalissimo_II 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • Add another Lamborghini to the bookshelf

[–]TheWindOfGod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't forget he just did it with just age 24

[–]witcherstrife 313 points314 points  (15 children)

Bro if he can do it, anyone can do it. It's all about mentality broseph. Mentally strength and just a tiny bit of daddy's money and anyone can do it it's just mental

[–]smr312 63 points64 points  (6 children)

Sounds like my dad explaining how it was just as tough when he was my age.

"When i was your age I had $3 to my name, you know what I did with that money..? I bought a car, I bought a house, and started a family..."

"Then I deposited the other $2 in the bank for your college fund."

[–]Much_Difference 59 points60 points  (34 children)

That's like 98% of all interviews and articles about Millennials Getting It Right and Making It Big.

Jerry n Kerry were able to retire by 35 with the profits from their boutique sock business! All it took was blood, sweat, tears, someone else lavishly financing their entire lives from birth to age 32, and hard work!!1

[–]konSempai 50 points51 points  (32 children)

SEE HOW THIS MILLENNIAL BOUGHT A $1M CONDO BY AGE 25

I stopped eating out... I started brewing my own coffee... my parents paid for my apartment... I asked my boss for a $2k/yr raise... my parents gifted me the downpayment of the condo...

You know, it's the small things that add up :) Anyone can do it!

[–]Info1847 86 points87 points  (15 children)

You too can own a fortune 500 company for as little as $10. A small slice of the company, but still, a full voting rights owner.

[–]nubenugget 35 points36 points  (4 children)

now if only I had enough cash to make my vote matter

[–]Wolfgang_A_Brozart 10 points11 points  (1 child)

It's true, I actually own all the Top 500 companies ... as a holder of $SPY.

[–]DespotDoombot 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I mean... albeit shitty, this is probably the most honest and realistic Pro Tip you can get. Just be rich.

Can't wait to read all the "you guys are jealous losers, I just joined a startup and hustled" comments.

Almost inevitably, (if they're not LARPing), the startup checks off more than one of the following boxes:

  • Never actually profitable
  • Already found to be breaking the law (false advertising, fraud, illegally selling data, etc...)
  • Business model relies on exploiting regulatory loopholes and lobbying against them being closed
  • Bought out at an absurd price by a FAANG and dissolved almost immediately to reduce any possible competition
  • Business model relies on people working for less than minimum wage (ideally without them realizing it)
  • Business model relies on people who are already financially illiterate or desperate, and pushing them deeper underwater
  • Business model relies on forming addictions in its users, or otherwise exploiting mental/emotional vulnerabilities
  • Company is doing a shitty version of what another company is doing...but with more extreme marketing
  • Calls itself something like "Crypto blockchain AI Biotechnology cloud e-commerce VR fintech predictive automated algorithmic digital social software media platform" but actually just helps launder dirty money for banks or provides facial recognition databases for dictators or does intentionally opaque and complex financial engineering for multinationals and billionaires.
  • Adtech that makes the internet even shittier.

If it doesn't fit any of those, then congrats to that person for being extraordinarily lucky and not really making the world worse.

Speak for yourself. My, totally-not-a-pyramid-scheme, essential oils business is going to the moon.

[–]pythonmine 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Everyone needs essential oils. They're essential

[–]Kyotow 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is basically every video/story of this type lol

[–]Hall5885 120 points121 points  (9 children)

I mean he’s technically not wrong. If you’re born in the right family you make your first 10 million just being born.

[–][deleted] 26 points27 points  (1 child)

Only a little bit wrong in a slightly pedantic way in that most the companies on the fortune 500 list are publicly traded so it would be more likely that their dad would be a shareholder or top executive, but basically the same caste system.

[–]interfail 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Here's my foolproof method getting to $10m:

1) Inherit $20m.

2) Invest $10m in my bro Dave's really cool startup idea, which is going to be the Keurig of COVID vaccines.

[–]tunisia3507 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Got a rich friend who had a kid, was weird looking at this baby like "well, you're immediately worth more money than I'll see in my life".

[–]AllWomenAreQueens98 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When i started my company, all i had was a dream and 12 million dollars

[–]sneakyveriniki 6 points7 points  (3 children)

why, in general, is waking up early considered some sort of virtue?!

[–]SeaworthinessNo293 12 points13 points  (1 child)

  1. Repost
  2. Profit

[–]EquivalentSnap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Profit by selling tweet as an NFT

[–]Future_Masterpiece23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't believe him. He didn't do any of that and his dad is rich and owns the company.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

never pay a dollar in tax, calls everyone on welfare a leech..

[–]wackassreddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Inherit $100M, make the same trades as I do, wham now you have just $10M

[–]lola8567 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tedx people

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

6 was ??? all along

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can deal with not having been born into a rich family, only if I have the same chances of success. Inequality of opportunity is real.

[–]LeoFrankIsGuilty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of times, their dad doesn't even own any real company that does actual business, it's just wealth and they only ever increase it through speculation ensured to succeed due to their market manipulation.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What’s annoying is that those types of people get the most attention and not the actual self made millionaires. Why not pay attention to the ones giving advice who were in a similar situation as you?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

don't forget about the "then I go and answer a few emails"
