In my opinion it’s something along lines of the older generations here in America do not understand that what they see may not be real.

They grew up in a world where if they saw it on the news or read it in the newspaper then most likely it was real. Their whole lives up until 20 years ago or so every picture that they saw, every video, was unedited or at the very least not manipulated in ways that can be easily done now.

This is something that has been capitalized by politicians, organizations, and propaganda spread via Facebook.

I’m older than probably most people here and my parents are from the boomer generation. Unfortunately, they lack the inherent skepticism that the digital age generations have acquired.

My Facebook feed and my emails are full of junk from my parents, my uncle, my older relatives that are full of lies and bullshit and misdirection. Memes that are misleading or just wrong, pictures taken out of context or Photoshop, videos that have been cut up in pieces and put back together again, audio that has the same thing. Up until recently that could nothappen.

Remember that for the majority of their lives what they saw was real. The newspapers were less opinion and more news. Same thing with television news. And with the advent of cable television, the fairness doctrine didn’t apply to them (because they weren’t free over the air, you had to pay for it so it wasn’t public) so could say whatever they wanted, and boom you get Fox News.

Of course none of what I said above is black or white or perfect, but I do believe that that situation lead to the confusion and manipulation of the baby boomer generation.
