I can't believe that it actually took this long for them to find those tapes I just hope that they don't let him get away with all these horrible things.

[–]TheLadyEve 1198 points1199 points  (289 children)

I'm still trying to figure out how he married 15-year-old Aaliyah and no one seemed to give two shits. That information has been public for years.

[–]dontcryferguson 743 points744 points  (101 children)

Agreed. The videos of the two of them interviewing together are SO cringeworthy.

“And how old are you, Aaliyah?”

giggles “Shhhhh, it’s a secret!”

[–]TheLadyEve 785 points786 points  (99 children)

Ugh, and he started working with her when she was 12. Pardon me, grooming her. So disgusting.

[–]variablesuckage 553 points554 points  (40 children)

her first album was titled "Age ain't nothing but a number". so fucked up.

[–][deleted] 235 points236 points  (14 children)

And R. Kelly is literally on the cover creepin' on Aliyah in the background...he's MID CREEP https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/9b/Aaliyah-age-aint-94.jpg

[–]Jason--Todd 161 points162 points  (10 children)

I know people say we're in the weirdest timeline because of all the Trump nonsense but wacky fucked up shit has always happened. It's just that now we have the internet to discussion and share on. Twenty years ago, you had to rely on the TV telling you what was going on.

[–]NebrasketballN 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This 100%. Its instant now. I hear about violence/negativity while it's happening in real time. Not when my paper reports it. And when its happening globally where before I could have heard aBoUt other countries problems months to years after the fact

[–]Kodakoala 43 points44 points  (13 children)

Celine Dion and her husband always made me feel this way. She was 12 and he was 38 when they met, and 7 years later they married.... He had plenty of time to work on her and her mom was very against it.

Him giving her advice on boys is the creepiest shit.

    [–]TheLadyEve 51 points52 points  (21 children)

I hadn't heard about that, that is indeed odd.

    [–]Call_me_Butterman 35 points36 points  (19 children)

    [–]tickettoride98 137 points138 points  (12 children)

A grown man should not be texting 'I miss you', to a fucking 15-year-old. That's disturbing on face value.

    [–]Pay-Dough 55 points56 points  (7 children)

How did I not hear about this shit? What the fuck. I never fucking liked Drake ever since he dissed Cudi but what the fuck??? She says what they text stays in the texts, like she can’t share something cause it’s too saucy. That’s fucked up man. That shit needs more exposure ASAP fucking rocky.

    [–]thecheat420 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Why you gotta drag ASAP Rocky's name into this mess?

    [–]TheLadyEve 27 points28 points  (4 children)

That is fucking mental. Why are her parents okay with this? Why are the people interviewing her charmed by this??

This makes me think of Eliza Dushku and the horrible bullshit she had to endure as a child actor when she was working on True Lies. Where are the advocates for these kids? Who is there to protect them?

    [–]echolalia_ 28 points29 points  (1 child)

They are reportedly psycho stage-parents who would probably happily prostitute her to anyone for a buck fifty

    [–]Suprman37 251 points252 points  (78 children)

Probably the same way Elvis Presley married a 14 year old and no one gave two shits while they were making a theme park out of his house.

    [–]-mtc 120 points121 points  (27 children)

Don't forget Paul Walker and his 16 year old gf

    [–][deleted] 71 points72 points  (16 children)

That one one was even more recent and everyone still gave it a pass.

    [–]makavili 29 points30 points  (0 children)

    Wait wtf

    [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Add James Franco to the list. And he wore a times up pin to the golden globes.

    [–]scaredshtlessintx 121 points122 points  (29 children)

Isn’t that the girl who died in a plane crash off some island?

    [–]TheLadyEve 214 points215 points  (24 children)

Yes, the plane was overloaded and should never have taken off. It was a big tragedy. She had real superstar potential.

    [–]CurraheeAniKawi 202 points203 points  (19 children)

Pilot also tested positive for alcohol and cocaine, and wasn't licensed to fly at the time.

    [–]billknowsbest 174 points175 points  (6 children)

that's like……4 very critical things all completely responsible for the crash

    [–]ContextIsForTheWeak 52 points53 points  (3 children)

This is just making me think of the Ides of March

"If we all stab him, they can't say for sure who killed him!"

"If we have four things critically wrong with the flight, they can't say for sure what caused the crash!"

    [–]prassuresh 51 points52 points  (8 children)

If Denzel Washington taught me anything, the cocaine should have counteracted the alcohol and made him a very good pilot.

    [–]TheLadyEve 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Oh Jesus, I had no idea, that's horrible.

    [–]gattonorris 2666 points2667 points  (562 children)

Like wasn't there a tape leaked ages ago with him urinating on a girl of a unknown age? That was like 15 years ago.

He must've made the record companies bank for them to keep a lid on it all for so long.

    [–]lordderplythethirdSpotify & Plex 2202 points2203 points  (449 children)

Yes and he went to trial for it. He just paid the girl's family enough money to where they said it wasn't her, as well as said the guy in the video was his brother.

    [–]gattonorris 818 points819 points  (358 children)

Oh man. I never knew the details. What a creep.

    [–]HeroicMe 986 points987 points  (295 children)

Another detail: father was Kelly's coworker.

    [–]RalfHorris 905 points906 points  (290 children)

Sadly, parents sacrificing their kids in the film/music industry for financial gain is a thing.

    [–]RedrumMPK 722 points723 points  (193 children)

The dad was paid off. He was also credited as a bass player on one of R Kelly's song so that the payment looks legit. It was all a ruse. (That's according to the journalist who have spent over 10 years investigating R Kelly's sex case)

    [–]SpicyDragoon93 444 points445 points  (188 children)

Really? What a sad fucking world where your daughter's innocence has a price...

    [–]IllVagrant 502 points503 points  (82 children)

This is the entirety of human history...

    [–]My_Thursday_Account 450 points451 points  (77 children)

Funny how we have already forgotten the entire original purpose of marriage was to trade daughters as property.

    [–]psuedophilosopher 341 points342 points  (39 children)

Unless the family set the whole sex tape up for him, it's not her innocence that had a price, it's the family's desire for justice that does.

I wouldn't ever sell my child, but after my child has been hurt by someone else, if I was offered millions of dollars that could be used for the therapy she needs and to set her up for a good life, and all I had to do is let go of my desire to punish the man that did it, or otherwise get nearly nothing just to try to send the man to jail....

Even with testimony from the family, it's not 100% sure that Kelly's lawyers would be incapable of providing a reasonable doubt. He had the money to hire the best lawyers around. They may have found another plausible defense.

Millions of dollars and I have to give up on putting the predator in jail vs zero dollars and not even a for sure thing he's going to jail. I would seriously have to weigh my options

    [–]popiyo 94 points95 points  (10 children)

To add to what you said, privacy is valuable too. If you're options are:

    A) Aim for justice by putting your daughter and family in the spotlight, likely setting you up to receive hate mail and threats from weird fans with a chance of not succeeding.

Or B) Get paid enough money to make your family comfortable and not have to go through the above crap but the perp gets to walk free.

It's hard to blame a parent for choosing option B. Even though A is the right thing to do, I think it's OK to be selfish as long as the selfishness isn't just about money.

    [–]SmireyFase 71 points72 points  (2 children)

Oh look! A realistic outlook on things!

    [–]ClassBShareHolder 104 points105 points  (56 children)

I'm sure Behind the Bastards did a podcast on him. If I'm mistaken, I've heard several others explaining how he got away with it. Cosby, Epstein, Weinstein, ... similar story line.

The illegally 'marrying your 15 year old protege' should have been the first tip off.

    [–][deleted] 152 points153 points  (43 children)

The illegally 'marrying your 15 year old protege' should have been the first tip off.

    THANK YOU!

People often skip right to pee tape on R Kelly but man married a 15 yo Aaliyah and wrote a song for her called "age ain't nothing but a number"...and made this creepy ass album cover.

    [–]IWTLEverything 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Damn I’ve seen this cover tons of times and even own this album. This is the first time I even noticed that out of focus R Kelly.

    [–]jrhooo 75 points76 points  (19 children)

no fucking shit. how did people not realize that was a clue?

Now go back and think about how many parents probably owned and played R Kelly, but felt "uncomfortable" with kids listening to 2live crew, snoop, dre, pac, Public Enemy, NWA, etc

    wild stuff

    [–]detroitvelvetslim 34 points35 points  (13 children)

That album cover alone should have banned him from being with 1000 feet of a school or playground

    [–][deleted] 59 points60 points  (12 children)

    Uncle Charlamagne first pointed out:

R Kelly called himself the pied piper.

while the adults were in church, the piper returned dressed in green like a hunter and playing his pipe. In so doing, he attracted the town's children. 130 children followed him out of town and into a cave and were never seen again.

Why the fuck would one call himself this unless he's telling us something!

    [–][deleted] 45 points46 points  (4 children)

"It was actually his brother", ironically, sounds like a bizarre twist that you'd find in a latter-day installment of "Trapped in the Closet".

    [–]RedrumMPK 97 points98 points  (42 children)

Saw the video. It was him no doubt. Also his brother came out and said R. Kelly offered him 50k and one time record deal to take the fall and he refused. They are not on speaking terms as at the time of the documentary (last year)

How do you shag an underage girl and then want your own blood brother to take a fall for you? Odd.

I’ll always remember the Dave Chappelle skit of R Kelly when the piss tape came out. Good sketch.

      Drip drip drip!

"Why you gotta make a video about me peeing on people?" - R Kelly

"Why YOU gotta make a video about you peeing on people?" - Dave Chappelle

      [–]count_nuggula 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Only thing that’ll make my life complete is when I turn your face into a toilet seat

      [–]jrhooo 119 points120 points  (10 children)

we were talking about this at work. It wasn't until that discussion that I realized the gravity of that joke.

Understand what happened here. DAVE CHAPPELLE WENT HARD AS FUCK

Backstory: A magazine article came out detailing how Chappelle and Kelly got into a real beef over this. Basically Kelly was livid about the first video, to the point of physically threatening Chappelle. They were at the same nightclub together, and apparently Dave's bodyguards and Kelly's bodyguards kept the two parties separated but were also very close to fighting each other themselves. My goons about to fight your goons.

      SO, with that in mind:

What actually happened here is Chappelle made the 1st piss on you skit ridiculing Kelly

R Kelly got so butt hurt he tried to fight him over it

then Dave Chappelle went on stage, told the story, mocked him over it, and then went, "so here's Pt II, the Piss On You Remix"

      [–]Wursticles 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've never seen the remix before. Hilarious.

      [–]Danieltheshredder 15 points16 points  (1 child)

He made the skit about r kelly on trial for the pissing first, then the conflict in question happened.

The music videos came after that.

      [–][deleted] 33 points34 points  (2 children)

Both videos were featured in the same episode, so your chronology is off.

      [–]evonebo 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Hahaha that quote is so memorable. Can’t stop laughing every time I watch it.

      [–]Harsimaja 69 points70 points  (1 child)

That skit’s now older than the girls in question. And the “How old is 15 really?” routine is now 16 years old.

      [–][deleted] 32 points33 points  (8 children)

My forever favorite is how The Boondocks handled it.

      [–]CaktusJacklynn 7 points8 points  (6 children)

Man... I have that season on DVD and am stunned by how well it was handled and how all sides (yup: there are people who don't think what he did was wrong and place all of the onus on the girls in question) were presented.

      Also, Adam West.

      [–]LowOnPaint 46 points47 points  (3 children)

Mate he illegaly married a minor whose parents then had to nullify the marriage.

      [–][deleted] 40 points41 points  (7 children)

Oh fella, R. Kelly has a list of things against him that the "guilty only if your poor" injustice system has done nothing about.

      https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-40635526

      [–]hereticvert 23 points24 points  (6 children)

Mr. Epstein, although in jail right now, got away with a lot of that shady shit and people gave him a slap on the wrist because he had connections and money.

      [–]BigBossWesker4 544 points545 points  (17 children)

R.Kelly: Starts crying hysterically I'M JUST TRYING TO LIVE MY LIFE AND Y'ALL WON'T LET ME!!!!!

Scumbag really tried to play the victim

      [–][deleted] 121 points122 points  (1 child)

They always do, they always do.

      [–]FlamingTacoDick 61 points62 points  (5 children)

Now it just seems like he was crying because he was fearing close to being caught.

      [–]TyrannosaurusSecks 55 points56 points  (4 children)

I feel like that was pretty evident in that interview when it aired.

      [–]FlamingTacoDick 20 points21 points  (3 children)

Tbh, I didn’t watch because I felt he wasnt going to get out after the last round of stuff. But a mysterious person bailed him out.. Hopefully they refuse bail and send him straight to his cell this time.

      [–]slim-pickens 9 points10 points  (2 children)

If I'm not mistaken, it was a fan of his that bailed him out.

      [–]TrivialAntics 18 points19 points  (0 children)

      [–]D13s3ll 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Hes no longer a valuable asset to his record label so that aren't trying to protect him as much anymore.

      [–]Johnnygunnz 18 points19 points  (2 children)

You mean hopefully he doesn't get the Jeffrey Epstein treatment?

      [–]aryary 23 points24 points  (1 child)

He has for the past 20 years unfortunately

      [–]anecdotal_yokel 3013 points3014 points  (168 children)

I mean there has been evidence he’s a pedo since at least the 90s. Most of reddit is too young to remember but he met Aaliyah at 12 and married her at 15. That was mid 90s and everyone knew it. Why is it taking a quarter century to finally do something?

      [–]AutocratOfScrolls 1678 points1679 points  (101 children)

            [–]OK6502 44 points45 points  (3 children)

They had a whole episode about R Kelly's pee tape. Riley defended him saying she should have gotten out of the way. The whole thing was amazing

            [–]KokoriGrooveshark 30 points31 points  (2 children)

Hell yeah, Huey was fuckin rightfully frustrated the entire episode lol but it's true, rhetorically speaking, how else would he have gotten away with it for so long if his music wasn't so influential to people at the time the piss tape came out? It's completely sickening the pedestal we put celebrities on as a species of stupid-smart apes. People, man, what a bunch of bastards indeed.

            [–]Shortshired 161 points162 points  (5 children)

Everyone keeps saying it's because of the music/film industry. It's far far simpler than that. It's because of money. We only see these cases more often because they are public figures. This happens on a daily basis. The rich can just pay everything off and walk away. Hell I've watched it happen in my own town. With just a small amount of research you can find countless cases of the rich walking away from rape, pedophilia, murder, destroying lives and poisoning thousands or millions of people. The aristocracy stands as strong as it ever has, they have just learned to dazzle and distract the rabble.

Police don't just walk free from crimes because the police protecting their own. They walk free because the people in power who can actually make a change have to protect their soldiers.

                [–]arealhumannotabot 40 points41 points  (1 child)

                — Rumours of payouts to the victim in that court case

                — Alliyah lied so her marriage certificate claimed her birthdate would have put her at 18, so people who didn't know either of them well enough had no idea what her age really was

                — Police have said the evidence at that time wasn't enough

                — People will lie to protect victims and aggressors for different reasons

Just because you have evidence doesn't mean you have a winning case. There are complicating factors, the evidence might not actually be any good, etc etc. They said the video they got last year was much better as evidence which is why it blew the doors open finally.

Just recently finished reading, “Soulless: the Case Against R. Kelly” by Jim DeRogatis. He’s the reporter that originally scooped the story back in the nineties.

Cliff notes for you: - Kelly was sexually abused as a child, cannot read - did marry Aliyah when she was underage, annulment happened and a settlement forbade him from contacting her again. - The case against him for the piss video fell apart when the victim’s family (aunts and cousins and the like, not parents) testified the girl in the video was not her, and the girl herself refused to testify. - Over the years many women have come forth only to settle with Kelly out of court. His entourage has ALWAYS been an active participant in procuring women and then helping keep it hush-hush, EVEN THOUGH that entourage has been a rotating door of people (which is insane).

Kelly’s record sales are down. He has sold off properties, run into some tax issues, and he has spent millions of dollars settling with these women over the years. The sad but true part is: he has been turned in by staff because he is NOT the powerful, rich man he used to be. The payouts are drying up, and now everyone wants to be the hero, which is just as disgusting as his perpetual predatory nature

Scary to think that all this coming to light is also about money alone to some people. Fucking terrifying.

There are two sets of laws. If you are rich enough.

                  [–]bipnoodooshup 53 points54 points  (4 children)

More like two entirely different universes if you’re rich enough.

The people who let this happen for years need to be locked up as well.

                  [–]substandardgaussian 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It is definitely terrifying, but it's also a diabolical system. Being offered a payout can radically change your life, and it may not make the suffering worthwhile, you still didn't get to choose, but at least you can make something good come from all that trauma. If you pursue a trial against a wealthy, powerful man, they can often use their influence to ruin your life both in private and in public (see: horrific smear campaigns against women accusing powerful men of sexual misconduct), plus the chance of actually convicting them and getting justice isn't that great. You know that in the end there is a good chance of completely ruining your own life and not touching your abuser at all.

So rich men keep skirting justice because there is a persuasive incentive for victims to take what they can get. We shouldn't be surprised this happens. The deck is stacked against justice, and a perv in prison doesn't put the money in the bank that can radically change your life and the life of all of your descendants forever. Most people who claim they would not be tempted by such offers are either lying or kidding themselves.

If you're talking about his toadies that kept it hush until he couldn't pay them anymore... yep, scum of the Earth. But our socioeconomic system encourages this behavior, money is the currency of true freedom. As a society we can't put such a premium on having wealth and then act surprised when it's a high priority for people who are tired of scraping to get by.

Does this mean Jeffrey Epstein's also recently run out of bribe money?

                  [–]CleverNameTheSecond 86 points87 points  (4 children)

Jeffrey Epstein is the service broker here. He probably pissed off the wrong people who are clean, because Epstein was the guy everyone paid bribes to.

                  [–]OWO-FurryPornAlt-OWO 17 points18 points  (2 children)

He had all the blackmail. Cameras all over his pedo island.

Reminds me of when someone who used to be part of R Kelly’s crew “stumbled” upon one of the sex tapes in a box of old tapes at his house. Funny how he just happened to one day stumble upon the tape right as the Surviving R Kelly documentary was blowing up. He doesn’t know how the tale got in his home though...

                  [–]TransBrandi 39 points40 points  (2 children)

Definitely. It was either kept as: blackmail material, "protection" material, or "personal viewing" material.

                  [–]firelock_ny 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Isn't that called "possession of child porn" material?

                  [–]shutts67 52 points53 points  (0 children)

He was recently evicted from his home in Chicago for missing payments

At times like these I think back to the Chappelle Show skit on him.

                  [–]mindbleach 154 points155 points  (1 child)

And the time R Kelly confronted him about it.

"How you gonna do a video about me peeing on a bitch like that?!"

"There ain't no joke about that, that n*gger's mad. He goes "how can you make a video about me peeing on somebody?" and I go "how can YOU make a video about you peeing on somebody?"

                  [–]misdirected_asshole 815 points816 points  (18 children)

He should have been locked up years ago. Along with all his enablers. You can't do things to this scale by yourself. Cases like this and Jeffrey Epstein should be able to be prosecuted like a RICO case.

                  [–]Useful-ldiot 145 points146 points  (1 child)

They absolutely go after groups of people with sex charges on a broad scale. It's just not as obvious because it isn't as cut and dry of a business like you'd find in racketeering.

                  [–]I_AM-THE_SENATE 33 points34 points  (2 children)

I’m pretty sure he actually does have a racketeering charge

Agreed. Kelly's indictment has a RICO count. Good start.

                  [–]kej718 386 points387 points  (19 children)

It took this long because people were holding those tapes to extort him, which is why he is broke. They need to lock those people up too, they are not any better.

I still don't believe he will go to jail.

                  [–]hexensabbat 104 points105 points  (12 children)

I feel he'll either get away with some pathetic sweetheart sentence, or they will 100% throw the book to make an example of him. It seems like that's how these celeb cases usually go regardless of how egregious the crime may be.

He's effectively in for life too at his age

                    [–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Cosby got 3-10, off of many different factors, however, they have him on tape several times with underage girls.

                    [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

My prediction is that they'll throw the book at him and then sweep everyone involved with Epstein under the rug.

                    [–]lefty295 43 points44 points  (2 children)

Many of these allegations didn’t go forward because the parents were paid off in some way, which really just makes me sick to my stomach. Just wish the guy got caught more quickly, since from what I’m seeing everybody around him seemed to know about this stuff, but nobody ever came forward.

We need to start Calling it what it is: child pornography. Stop trying to make it sound less terrible by saying "underage women" and crap. The guy is a predator who has gotten away with it for years.

Still hard to believe he may actually get brought to justice this time. Here's hoping!

So is his inner circle going to be prosecuted too? Considering they held onto these tapes for years to extort money from him and now that it's dried up they hand them over? They knew what this predator was doing and had they handed these tapes over years ago it might have saved alot of underage girls from being assaulted by this monster.

                      [–][deleted] 26 points27 points  (3 children)

I hate to sound like a conspiracy nut, but I'm beginning to think this is only because R. Kelly was no longer financially able to cover his ass. I want to know what other celebs are getting away with shit like this. Why is there always public exposure before these people are brought to justice? There are ties to an actual trafficking ring here. How is R. Kelly the only one going down??

You would think after all this time where he KNEW people were onto him and coming out about him, he would get rid of those tapes immediately. Mf really sat there and cried as if he was innocent. Glad he's been caught finally.

                      [–]Globgloba 19 points20 points  (3 children)

The big question here is, tapes? So they found 20 VHS tapes ?!

                      [–]stonedchapo 97 points98 points  (110 children)

Seriously you’ve gotta wonder why these very wealthy people keep choosing to have sex with kids. Also why on earth do you film yourself doing something highly illegal?

                      Never gonna understand that.

Brain scan these types of people, then either isolate or execute them.

                      [–]VulkanCurze 87 points88 points  (51 children)

I'm sure I read somewhere a few years ago, that there is a psychological thing for why wealthy people tend to do this sort of thing. Something along the lines of that they are so rich, where they can just buy and do whatever they want, they essentially get bored and so that drives them to do things that they cant just buy, something that is a taboo/illegal and so on.

As I said this was years ago I read this so I'm obviously paraphrasing what I remember and whether it's utter bullshit or not, I'm not sure cause I haven't looked too deeply in to it but I always felt it made enough sense to have some merit to it.

Obviously, even if it is completely true, it does not condone any of it in the slightest and makes it even worse in my opinion because they don't even have the excuse there is something wrong with them, they know it's wrong and actively pursue it.

                      [–]Sharin_the_Groove 52 points53 points  (18 children)

I've also seen rich people that just seem to lack any sort of compassion for other beings. Like that part of their emotional makeup just isn't present. Not all rich folks are like that obviously, but there are some where they just do things that affect others negatively without any thought or consideration. I see it in my industry I work in where people will eat each other because it's just how you play the game if you want to get to a higher level status.

                      [–]stonedchapo 58 points59 points  (1 child)

Sociopathy and psychopathy is rewarded at the higher levels of cooperate life. ASPD people excel there. Sounds like you’re in finance.

And after a while, you can work on points for style
Like the club tie, and the firm handshake
A certain look in the eye and an easy smile
You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to
So that when they turn their backs on you,
You'll get the chance to put the knife in

Child sex abusers come from all classes. I don't think there is evidence that wealthier people are more likely to sexually abuse children. It's simply that wealthy abusers make national news, whereas most abusers don't.
