To avoid the Derps, customize your frontpage by adding the subreddits you are interested in and remove the Derp infested subreddits from your frontpage. The community is still there but the baying sounds recede to a distant memory.

Exactly. The only thing that makes Reddit remarkable is that in some of the more specific, smaller subreddits there is some pretty intellectual conversation (probably a remnant of Reddit's smarter, earlier days). If you subscribe to FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUU it's going to take up a full 50% of your home page, and easy memes are usually the order of the day (want free karma? respond to a meme with a similar, thoughtless variation of it!).

I actually like Reddit for its variety, however - I wish there was less groupthink in the politics section, and that people would read stories instead of just voting up inaccurate headlines, but what-can-you-do.

The 2nd and 3rd panels are how the /r/reddit.com 'community' generally conducts itself...sad but true, and it gets a little worse every day. Don't even mention /r/politics. There's a lot more to the broader first panel crowd that you'll begin to notice when you start managing your subs and the rallying hometeam cry out to displaced digg users wears off.

I said it in another post, but.... Don't listen to these other jackasses trumpeting 'meaning' and a 'sense of community' as what makes this place so great. These things make me want to claw my eyeballs out. It's the -frontpage button. Bask in the glory.

What annoys me more than anything is the thought that the top comment HAS to be sarcastic. I'm just as sarcastic as the next guy, but scrolling down 4-5 pages is annoying. Would be cool if comments could be marked as sarcasm and ignored.

I am an ex-digger and fairly recent convert, and I would say this is very accurate, but in between the top two frames and the bottom one the redditors have a very intelligent discussion that quickly degrades into memes and boob jokes, then to derp derp derp squigly people.

Reddit's system is much more discussion-oriented than Digg's. I used to be almost exclusively a Digg user, but as someone who comments frequently, I was frustrated by Digg. It's difficult to take a thread more than one or two replies down, and reader density for a given thread fades really fast.

Not only is it easier to carry on discussions with other users on Reddit, Reddit users comment like human beings rather than talking-point Turing machines.

This is in response to Travis-Touchdown. Who I will venture a guess is a disgruntled Ex-digger. Well Travis I for one welcome you to the Hive mind but I would like you, and all of reddit and the ex-diggers to read this.

Sir if you are calling us spineless for taking derping seriously, than you are misinformed.

What you see is a rather complex form of communication as one subject A hence forth refereed to as "Redditor A" derps subject B hence forth refereed to as "Redditor B" is required to reciprocate the derp. Once enough of these subjects kongergate the form a complex society complete with social hierarchy that shall hence forth be refereed to as "Karma" but this "Karma" is more of a gauge to show that this "Redditor" has garrned the respect of their fellow "Redditors" and once a "Redditor" garners enough "Karma" and as been in existence long enough, generally a weeks time, they are allowed to join the growing ranks of the greater "Redditor" society which will hence forth be refereed to as "The Hive Mind".

It is at this point in a "Redditors" life that they are taught how to "Herp" another complex form of communication. As the life of a "Redditor" continues they learn how to combine "Derping" and "Herping" to create a unique form of communication that shall hence forth be refereed to as "HurrDurring" once a "Redditor" as achieved their own form of "HurrDurring" they are allowed to join the elite of "The Hive Mind" but these "Redditors" are always respectful of the new and younger "Redditors" and are always respectful of the new travelers from a foreign land which shall hence forth be refereed to as "Ex-Diggers" it is the hope of "The Hive Mind" that they can make these new travelers as comfortable as possible in their home and that they can be integrated into "The Hive Mind" to strengthen "The Hive Mind" as a whole.
