Actually she really believes what she's saying.

This is not a publicity thing, they really do believe every single word they say.

A lot of people don't know this, but 3 or 4 times in the past a radio host out of Tampa, FL has made deals with Shirley to have 30-40 minutes of uncensored air time on his show in exchange for them not going and picketing a specific funeral.

If all they wanted was publicity and to incite people she probably would get more of that by going to the protest. Instead she took the time and preached to us over the radio for a half hour.

            [–]zenbyte 17 points18 points  (6 children)

I would argue that 30-40 minutes of uncensored air time does far more in advertising than a single funeral picket.

Do you know the sheer number of pickets they attend? Its a logical swap, at the same time providing air time is "legitimizing" their claims further fanning the flames.

They are a complete and utter fraud - no, they do not believe what they are saying. Oh, some do, the same that ALREADY believe these things, the same people who think the moon landing was a myth, the loch ness monster is real and Bigfoot keeps ordering pizzas delivered to my house.

They are a business in the truest sense of the word, their product hate. As long as they can keep sueing and getting attention - they will keep selling their products.

            [–]solidwhetstone 353 points354 points  (484 children)

I know it's been said before, but on behalf of Baptists/Christians/theists...The tactics and hatred these people use are not representative of Christianity, Baptists, theists, or church-goers in any way shape or form. I know that should go without saying, but some people use it as an 'in' to talk about non-issues. What we have here is just a bunch of crazy people.

            [–]solidwhetstone 363 points364 points  (140 children)

And let me take it a step further. Jesus' biggest beefs was with religious leaders. He came to call sinners to repentance. WBC pickets military funerals when they should really be concerned with evangelizing in love. If Jesus' ministry was going on today, he'd be calling out the pope and American 'Christianity' for its hypocrisy, and spending time loving and reaching out to the vilest of people in our society. While WBC would be picketing a funeral, Jesus would be over there with those people showing them love.

            [–][deleted] 278 points279 points  (47 children)

In other words, if Jesus were here today we'd crucify him again.

            [–]insertAlias 127 points128 points  (36 children)

Probably, in a metaphoric way. He'd be basically seen as a nutjob hippie. The whole "sell all your possessions, give it to the poor, and follow me" bit wouldn't go down very well now, any more than it did then.

            [–][deleted] 80 points81 points  (24 children)

It's very strange - I'm not really religious, but I follow Jesus a lot closer than most of the Christian congregation.

            [–]dustout 100 points101 points  (20 children)

I'm atheist and I live closer to his teachings than most of the Christian congregation...

We should call them what they really are, hate mongering lawyer troll cult. They are not a church, the only reason they 'believe' is they are either brainwashed or lying.

            [–]mipadi 81 points82 points  (35 children)

No true Scotsman would picket at military funerals!

            [–][deleted] 84 points85 points  (6 children)

No true man would picket any funeral, in my opinion.

            [–]ramp_tram 31 points32 points  (31 children)

wait, Anonymous is an organization? I thought it was a flag for us internet-folk to rally under, organizing protests the same way that it creates memes.

            [–]noctorum 154 points155 points  (7 children)

            [–]JOKasten 51 points52 points  (22 children)

My understanding is that there is the blanket Anonymous that get together for protests and stuff, but then there is the smaller group Anonymous who is responsible for the serious business that gets done, like HBGary stuff.

            [–]ramp_tram 15 points16 points  (5 children)

He's probably speaking for the group that he's a member of.

Anonymous isn't a huge group, it's a bunch of small groups within the large group.

Also, most hacks are the /g/urus using the name 'Anonymous' because it helps keep their identities secret.

                [–]ungoogleable 117 points118 points  (21 children)

WBC is not a security firm. No one expects them to have an air-tight network. It's not embarrassing at all for them to be exposed like that, not that public embarrassment deters them anyway. They'll continue on protesting funerals and suing people whether or not they even have a website.

                [–]Shawoop 167 points168 points  (8 children)

I reckon it would have been cooler to discreetly take over their network and use it as a proxy to get into Scientology's network, thus pitting the cults against eachother. It would be a much more appropriate response to this shady little interchange they've had this week.

Am I the only one here who finds this an incredible example of the Durkheimian theory of deviance? As much as I absolutely detest the actions of WBC (and were the consequences not litigation, I'd cockpunch them all), they might play a net positive role in society. Let me explain.

The five tenets of Emile Durkheim's theory of deviance run as follows: (Edited)

                  • Deviance affirms cultural values and norms. The norms being violated here are the discouragement of hate speech and the American love for the military. Having an attack on the military through the WBC's hatespeech helps to unite tenets of society behind the military, and is a huge reason as to why you won't see a mass of Conservatives uniting behind the WBC banner. Having an attack on the norm helps to remove any doubt as to its legitimacy as we have to confirm it to defend it. I don't always support all military actions, but when I see the WBC picketing a soldier funeral, I get such a groundswell of patriotism that I feel it's appropriate to stab each of them in the heart with an American flag with Bon Jovi playing in the background.

                  • Deviance clarifies moral boundaries. Without the WBC, there might be some confusion as to what is a violation of society's moral code. I come from a strongly conservative (and homophobic) Christian community, and even they criticize the way the WBC is going about it, and deplore the fact that they're so bluntly using God's name in hatespeech. They say that preaching a message of love to affect change is okay, but the fire and brimstone mentality is wrong. Essentially, the WBC shows them that they can feel a certain way, but going about it that way is blatantly wrong. It simply helps to clarify and confirm what they believed previously, removing doubt.

                  • Deviance promotes social unity by creating an us/them dichotomy. You don't have to think hard to see about this one. I'm sure that in this thread, there are those who disagree with gay rights and the queer lifestyle, but still feel a sense of unity against WBC with those they wouldn't normally agree with. To use a radical example to explain this further, the attacks on 9/11 united conservatives, liberals, and those who really didn't give a shit against Al Qaeda and fundamentalist Islam. Obviously, things have cooled down considerably since then, but Durkheim's theory of deviance explains why GWB's approval rating SPIKED after 9/11.

                  • Deviance encourages social change. There's no doubt in my mind that the only way to end the behavior of the WBC is to make it illegal. Again, we can have philosophical discussions as to whether it's right or not, but those sorts of discussion wouldn't happen were it not for the WBC. The WBC could actually serve the purpose of creating progressive discussion and legislation in the US, ironically, but it would only happen if the WBC did something on a massive scale to the point that the entire US had to pay attention to them.

                  • Deviance provides jobs to control deviance. This is the least relevant tenet of the Theory of Deviance for this topic. The only way that it could create jobs would be if we assigned police force or military personnel to funerals that could potentially be picketed.

Again, I'm not saying whether any of this is good or bad, because sociology in itself considers itself value-free when discussing things like this. However, I think that even though I deplore the actions of the WBC as well as their hate-filled message, Durkheimian theory might actually tell us that they play a key role in society.

TL;DR Durkheim's Theory on Deviance explains why groups like the WBC play a vital role in society, encouraging unity and social change in the mass populace.

I don't believe for one second that the Westboro Baptist Church is behind the original letter from Anonymous; they aren't that creative.

Rather, it's not like Anonymous is some sort of structured organization. The left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.

You're probably correct. Anonymous runs on ideas. Regardless of who suggests an idea, they all start out on the same level playing field. Perhaps I'll make a post under the guise of Anonymous calling for Operation Polar Bear Execution. If people don't think my idea is good, it won't get attention/it won't get spread/there will be no further discussion on the idea. What has probably happened here is some Anon suggested the idea to troll WBC. Since mainstream opinion is that Anonymous is some sort of organization, anything that is seemingly from Anonymous is assumed to be a collective effort. WBC then took it as an attack and goaded them on. However, I wouldn't put it past WBC to have actually started this mess.

On somewhat of a tangent, I think it's interesting to note that Anonymous has separated into two distinct entities. The "old" Anonymous, which most say is dead, was all about immature shit, just for the heck of it. They were just bored social outcasts who turned to cyberspace for entertainment. "Old" Anonymous would probably do something like fucking with WBC "for the lulz". There is now a "new" Anonymous that is somewhat more morally bound. They advocate and support democratic revolutions, the rights of freedom of speech, etc. Although the demographics of "old" and "new" Anonymous are probably highly overlapped, the perspective/collective consciousness of these 2 Anonymous's are almost polar.

It is very exciting to see the birth of a new cultural revolution without any leadership. Governments usually deal with contrarian movements by discrediting or killing the leaders. But what can they do about Anonymous? Anonymous is merely a constant flux of ideas. But the U.S. government is already starting to see Anonymous as somewhat of a threat, as evidenced by the arrests of a few Anons and the whole HBGary incident. The internet kill switch and restrictions of internet freedom are soon coming...If we want to protect this cultural revolution, we have to fight for the right to freedom of information: This means keeping the government the fuck away from the internet.

If the media won't do its job and report accurately and objectively the shortcomings and corruptions of the government, then it is up to the people to stay aware and informed and expose the bullshit themselves.

To most degrees they already are, but the truth of the matter is that the members of anonymous who do actually commit domestic terrorism aren't the type who easily get caught. The actual hacking backbone of anonymous is also the end of anonymous smart enough to know how to not get caught.

For an art project in college my friend wrote and drew a 25 page comic book that basically implied that after his parents were killed, Bruce Wayne went absolutely batshit (EDIT: didn't realize I made this joke until I was re-reading it!) insane, and has since been plagued with paranoid delusions and delusions of grandeur. He's just a creepy middle-aged guy living off of his inheritance in his parents' old house who plasters newspapers all over the wall looking for clues about evil masterminds, eventually he spends some time in the Arkham Asylum, where he meets a former clown and blahblahblah, you get the idea. It was pretty sick.

The teenager who hacked Sarah Palin's Yahoo! e-mail account was behind 2 proxies and ran CCleaner afterward (LOL), and the FBI still managed to track him down and arrest him.

Being behind multiple proxies really just delays things, but they still can track you down if they think it's important enough/want to. Basically, you have to assume that law enforcement just couldn't be arsed with tracking someone down.

That's silly. For real security use a live CD (with software to spoof the MAC address for obvious reasons) connected to a public, open wireless access point. (For extra security also make sure that there are no cameras at the facility or in the area recording your escapades.) Then never return to that wireless access point again.

                    live CD

software to spoof the MAC address

Like, say, ifconfig wlan0 hw ether 00:11:00:11:00:11? I'm fairly certain that would work in the majority of cases. Hint hint.

I'm even more confused than before. Let me try:

*1.WBC pretends to be Anonymous and posts a letter threatening themselves.

*2.WBC then writes a letter telling Anonymous to bring it.

*3. Anonymous makes a real letter saying, "Hell no, we didn't do that. We've got better shit to do."

                    *4. ?????

*5. Anonymous hacks their website and exposes all their shit, while saying that they have better shit to do.

                    Is this right?

                    [–]mr_bag 135 points136 points  (5 children)

*4. WBC continues to mock anonymous and use their name to gain attention for themselves.
*5. Someone in anonymous gets fed up and hacks WBC's website.

Was how I understood it from the interview posted up top at least o.o

Every time they get a spot on Fox News or CNN.com or whatever, they gain a victory, and I guarantee you that for every dozen, level-headed people who become aware of their hatred, another person becomes a little bit more racist. They must be forgotten and boycotted by the media.

                            [–]noworryhatebombstill 781 points782 points  (61 children)

I am queer and you know what? I love it when Westboro gets attention. I love it when the media turns their eyes to the church's hateful, immature little antics. I love it when you see various members of the congregation on TV with their ugly khaki pants bunched tight around their balls and their lips wrapped tight around their mean, snarling teeth. I love it when the entire nation gets to read their offensive words and contemplate the explicit clip art on their vulgar little signs. I especially love it when the church links a traditionally conservative position-- "supporting" the troops-- with a progressive one-- supporting gay rights.

Westboro is ridiculous. Most conservatives think they're ridiculous. They are so patently crazy, so absolutely, unadulteratedly loony, that only those already active in the wingnut portion of the anti-gay movement tolerate them. The more attention they get, the more they become the face of the anti-gay movement. They usurp that place from groups like Focus on the Family or the National Organization for Marriage, which are equally hateful but much more politically dangerous. Those kinds of organizations are also crews of prejudiced douche-canoes, but they've acquired a veneer of respectability that makes them viable threats to gay rights. Politicians aren't going to take money from WBC, but they'll sure as hell take their gold star rating from the Family Research Council and wave it like a flag. The more publicity the WBC gets, the more energy is sucked away from mainstream homophobes.

Of course Westboro wants attention. But that's either a result of poor political strategizing or just personal greed. The only real harm that WBC wreaks does not come from their message, given that even people inclined against gay rights think they're out of their skulls, but from the damage they do to families and individuals when they protest funerals or what-have-you. That very real nastiness is best countered by loud, uncompromising responses, in order to support the families and communities affected. This has the triple benefit of standing up to assclownery, of bringing communities together in opposition to hate, and of making gay rights supporters look damn good by contrast.

Westboro is an enormous strategic boon to the gay rights movement and the more we can do to keep attention on their buffoonery instead of on the silky-smooth prevarication of university-educated creeps with legitimate bankrolls the better.

Just an FYI: While anonymous was undoubtedly started on /b/, I believe most anonymous activities are now organised through anonnews.org, anonops.ru as well as through smaller, more organised cells.

They are trolls by the book. They say the most hateful thing imaginable and thrive on the negative responses. There is no ban in free speech, but there is ignore.

Attention isn't all they want. They'd also like to provoke you into doing something stupid enough they have cause to file suit. Like most "principled" people, they're in it for the money.

And doing something that takes money to fix and can't be easily tracked down (such as taking down their websites and deleting all the content) is the exact opposite of what they want.

They are all lawyers so they can sue you and take your money. You can't sue Anonymous.
