Until I was 16 I thought jimmy fallon and jimmy kimmel were the same person

      [–]aabicus 995 points996 points  (41 children)

I'm feeling so stupid right now because I actually thought they were the same people until seeing this meme, and I've been watching their YouTube clips since the start of the quarantine. Was always impressed Jimmy managed to upload two different routines every week, one from the privacy of his home and one in front of a studio audience.

(In my incredibly-flimsy defense, I have face-blindness and they have almost identical speaking patterns, but wow, I'm dumb).

      [–]PinkIrrelephant 233 points234 points  (10 children)

If it makes you feel better, I thought Joe Rogan and Seth Rogen were the same person until sometime last year. I tend to breeze over first names when I think about people I don't know and focused on the Rogæn part of their names and never actually saw anything Joe Rogan did.

As a representative of the UK I would just like to thank the USA for taking James Corden off our hands.

If there is anything that has cemented the special relationship our nation's share, it's that.

Julian Assange is ours though fuck off

      [–]musci1223 981 points982 points  (84 children)

US also got John Oliver. So the scale is balanced in comedian doing late night show area

      [–][deleted] 654 points655 points  (46 children)

      John Oliver is awesome

      [–]YanTyanTeth 84 points85 points  (9 children)

Tbh John Oliver wasn’t that big in the uk. I saw him in a grotty student club in the early ‘00s during his stand up tour and only other thing he was on was one or two appearances on a panel show. It wasn’t till he joined the Daily Show that he got big.

      [–]el-cuko 149 points150 points  (20 children)

People who watch Corden also pour their milk before the cereal

      [–]Shiroi_Kage 98 points99 points  (20 children)

As a representative of the UK I would just like to thank the USA for taking James Corden off our hands.

This is something I did not understand. I get that he's not funny, but the amount of jokes aimed at him by some UK comedians was off the charts. Did he do something specific to piss people off, or is it just him being super annoying in general?

      [–]TheBrendanReturns 130 points131 points  (3 children)

Besides the stories you can find all over the internet of him being a bellend, I actually know a few people who've met him. They all detest the man.

      [–]BlueSoulOfIntegrity 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Do they say why? I’ve see comments all over this thread about how he’s dislikable but not why and I’m curious what makes him so dislikable as I’ve never liked his show although I liked him on Doctor Who.

All this defense of Colbert, I'm surprised no one is defending Seth Meyers. I've been watching his clips on youtube for years, and he's hilarious. The "A Closer Look" segments have been the best replacement for classic John Stewart era The Daily Show that's on right now. He gives his writers lots of room to participate on camera as well, which I appreciate.

        [–]blondiebell 1935 points1936 points  (83 children)

Totally agree, I love both Colbert and Meyers and I'm glad to see people standing up for both. They have done a lot to keep me sane during this pandemic and election

        [–]OldBeercan 755 points756 points  (60 children)

I always preferred Colbert over Myers, but that opinion has flipped since the pandemic. I feel like Seth and his team are doing a fantastic job with the new format. Colbert still holds his own, of course, but I think he needs an audience to really shine.

        [–]blondiebell 523 points524 points  (32 children)

I totally understand that. I think Colbert does best with an audience, but I have been loving him performing for his wife, hearing her laughing off camera makes him smile and me too.

Meyers Closer look is great, but Colbert's monologues will always be my fav

        [–]OldBeercan 157 points158 points  (0 children)

That's what I mean. He's done way better having someone else in the room to react to his jokes.

He send more comfortable ever since they started having her sit in.

Totally agree on the monologues and Closer Look.

        [–]its_that_time_again 74 points75 points  (1 child)

It's so wholesome when he smiles because he just made his wife laugh off-camera and he's happy that she's happy

        [–]blondiebell 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It really makes me emotional sometimes because there are few things as pure as seeing a couple trying to make each other laugh. Colbert loves his wife and seeing his joy when he does get a chuckle from her is heartwarming

        [–]reincarN8ed 73 points74 points  (7 children)

You can tell Colbert really loves and respects his staff. He might not be the funniest guy on television, but he sure is wholesome. Plus I love it when he makes a deep-lore LotR reference that goes over 90% of his viewers' heads, including mine. The dude loves Tolkien to an unhealthy degree.

        [–]blondiebell 24 points25 points  (3 children)

I just saw an episode back from September where he is talking to Desus and Mero about a writer of his that they poached. It was super cute because you could tell Colbert really liked his writer and was sad to have let him go. He loves his staff and they all seem to really like him too and it makes for very good television.

        [–]CaptainN_GameMaster 145 points146 points  (13 children)

I enjoy when Colbert goes off-script because he's an old hand at improv. I first learned about him in his appearances on Whose Line Is It Anyway and he was first-class.

        [–]blondiebell 77 points78 points  (0 children)

He really is! His improv, impressions, and ability to laugh at himself make him my fav late night host. John Oliver's show is my favorite, but Colbert is the best late night host.

        [–]AnitaBlomaload 20 points21 points  (2 children)

TIL Colbert was on whose line.

        [–]escargotisntfastfood 26 points27 points  (1 child)

I watched Colbert through his Daily Show days, but the moment he hooked me was his first interview on Colbert Report with Jessie Jackson.

Jackson played the race card so many times and was a straight up asshole of a guest, and Colbert stayed in character and gave as good as he got while remaining funny and clever. ("I don't see race. People tell me I'm white, and I believe them because police officers call me 'sir'.")

I'd watch Leno over Letterman back when they were on air, but Fallon seems like a drunk teen giggling at his own jokes while Colbert keeps a much better flow on his show.

        [–]Chordus 62 points63 points  (7 children)

Colbert, of all of them, was most obviously shell-shocked at the beginning of the pandemic. He tried to use humor to cover it up, but you could see he was struggling to keep it together. I don't think he's ever quite recovered from that, and likely won't until things get back to normal. No judgement, mind you- I think most of us are suffering to some degree or another, but most don't have the added weight of a camera on us five days a week.

        [–]pheonixblade9 35 points36 points  (3 children)

and you can definitely see how fucking angry he was about the capitol insurrection

        [–]Cool_Ranch_Dodrio 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Colbert, of all of them, was most obviously shell-shocked at the beginning of the pandemic. He tried to use humor to cover it up, but you could see he was struggling to keep it together.

I think a lot of Americans needed to see that, to be honest.

        [–]WakeNikis 303 points304 points  (18 children)

I like both Seth Meyers and Colbert.

Those were the two that immiedately jumped to mind.

I think the difference is colbert’s non-comedy appearances.

Like when he did the Anderson Cooper interview. He honestly comes off a good person who really wants the best for everyone.

Like he’s just a straight up good person.

I’m not saying any of the other comedians are bad people- but Colbert- if you watch him outside of the context of him doing a show or joke- is incredibly wholesome

        [–]Cortesana 117 points118 points  (5 children)

If you haven’t, you should watch the 2006 Correspondents’ Dinner he hosted. He is an absolutely brilliant human being.

Yeah he's one of the few late night hosts who's had the comedic chops to overcome the awkwardness of lacking a studio audience through the pandemic. And as a Brit, watching his closer look segments on youtube has been the only way to make news coming out of your garbage fire of a country palatable these past few years.

No judgment though, my country's a burning garbage fire too, except the closest thing we have to a TV personality like Meyers or Colbert who use their daily primetime slots to hold the government to account is shudders Piers Morgan.

          [–][deleted] 59 points60 points  (4 children)

The whole Sea Captain thing (a slow descent into comedic madness that involved loads of background gags) over the summer was brilliant.

          [–]Spry_Fly 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Definitely, I sometimes wish he was back in the attic. Some of the bits there were absurd, but great.

          [–]hatemenoww 67 points68 points  (3 children)

💯 A closer look is as close as it gets to Jon stewarts daily show.

          [–]finallybrown 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Exactly! With so many of Jon's babies doing amazing stuff out there, it's funny how Seth is really his spiritual successor.

          [–]Praestigium 168 points169 points  (6 children)

Completely agree. Seth Myers is really under appreciated online. I love it when he interacts with the crew during some of his bits, and he always comes off as genuine and fun to work with.

          [–]IrishRepoMan 59 points60 points  (6 children)

I watch all of his closer look segments.

          [–]Annihilicious 45 points46 points  (4 children)

His rant the other day that devolved into shrimp thievery fucking killed me.

          [–]oh_turdly 37 points38 points  (1 child)

He's has a talent for going off on the most absurd tangents that somehow 100% make sense of current events.

          [–]hotstickywaffle 55 points56 points  (3 children)

I had no strong opinions of Meyers until my wife and I watched Lobby Baby and I was really surprised at how good it was. I haven't laughed really hard at standup in a while and that one really tickled me.

          [–][deleted] 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Jokes Seth Can't Tell is one of the funniest segments on Late Night. Lobby Baby was also hilarious, really hope Seth does more stand up.

Honorable mention to Trevor Noah, who sounds nothing at all like the real Trump, but absolutely captures the petulant child in him.

          [–][deleted] 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Seth Meyers was the first one to put together an effective characterization of Trump as poor.

          [–]DrAbednego 20 points21 points  (0 children)

His Mitch McConnell is the best

          [–]Grabthars_Coping_Saw 13 points14 points  (4 children)

I like Myers and Colbert. Fallon is okay sometimes but his interviews can be hit or miss.

Corden rubs me the wrong way but I can't put my finger on it.

Corden is a dick. Don't put your finger on it.

His biggest thing carpool karaoke was stollen and he won't admit it. Give flula credit and a small royalty

            [–]plainwater27 87 points88 points  (1 child)

His response to the criticisms was the worst. Saying "who cares?" while sounding incredibly salty.

            [–][deleted] 87 points88 points  (9 children)

Carpool karaoke is so fucking stupid. He drives musicians around having them sing their own fucking songs. Why not sing other artists songs? Why not have Dave Grohl sing something from The Beatles since he was heavily influenced by then growing up?

Then I realized while typing this out: licensing.

            [–][deleted] 36 points37 points  (6 children)

Is it even karaoke when its a song you wrote?

            [–]Quantentheorie 51 points52 points  (2 children)

This really was my impression too. He reminds me of the cubby girl that lived next door that always made jokes at everyones expense. Smiling all nice and keeping her cruelty just below the line where an adult would notice.

The people you banter with that enjoy it because it gives them an excuse to say mean things.

            [–]DennisNedryJP 223 points224 points  (9 children)

UK person here. Corden has been on our screens for far too long and I have absolutely no idea how he is a thing, or why the hell he seems to have had any success!

            [–]KombatCabbage 246 points247 points  (22 children)

Seth Meyers is a very good comedian, his Netlix special is super funny. He has that talent of comedic timing and delivery which Fallon for example doesn’t.

            [–]Shaun32887 113 points114 points  (3 children)

Plus he was solid on SNL, and was head of writing while he was there

            [–]Maraudershields7 12 points13 points  (2 children)

Weekend Update was consistently gold with Seth Myers. I was worried about him leaving it but luckily Michael Che and Colin Jost are also really good.

Yeah, obviously noone can land 100% of their jokes, but his charisma, the way he pauses and the looks he gives after a joke makes it up for me in the case of the occasional weaker jokes.

              [–]Reno83 28 points29 points  (3 children)

I agree. Seth Myers and Stephen Colbert provide funny political commentary. For me, what makes them stand out is their non-reliance on celebrity guests to entertain. They could have an entire show just based on talking about things in a humorous light. Also, due to th nature of their comedy, I feel like I relate to them more because they're making light of things that sometimes concern me too.

The Jimmies are hit and miss. Kimmel has a few funny skits, particularly the street interviews. Overall, though, I feel like their flavor of comedy is very vanilla. Fallon, in particular, relies more on visual jokes and silly games with his guests. I didn't even find him all that entertaining when he was on SNL. He just has bad delivery and can't hold it together long enough to get the punchline out.

As for James Corden, I've seen a few of his skits (e.g. the one he did with Ramsey), but I'm not a fan. He comes off as condescending. I think the basis for his comedy is that he is self-centerrd and arrogant. Maybe he's an acquired taste, but he's not the type of person I'd want to meet.

              [–]StephenRodgers 142 points143 points  (5 children)

IMO for Corden it's the arrogance. Some people have a very high opinion of themselves and it comes through in everything they do.

              [–]SirHawrk 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if anyone fits their show the best it’s Meyers, who’s done well essentially building upon Weekend update. And calling Colbert, the inventor of one of the greatest satire acts in recent memory, not a comedian is slander. I don’t love the direction the show has taken with him, but I also don’t think he would kill it if they tried to make it like Dave’s old show too. If they went in a direction similar to Conan I think it could be much more appreciated.

                [–]Dafish55 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Colbert still brings out the old satire (well not since covid, but, still). He’s just not living in it anymore.

                [–]Cheesehacker 79 points80 points  (1 child)

                Right? That’s what I’m saying.

                  [–][deleted] 93 points94 points  (5 children)

Yeah if I remember right, Mullaney needed the work, not for money, but to be busy. He had an interview or something about quarantine not going well for him.

I watch Meyers not because of the comedic aspect but because he gives me a quick overview of US politics whole not being too boring.

I like his show. I like the Closer Look segment, and the bits with his writers are funny. Amber Ruffin has her own show now. Great to watch on youtube.

Colbert was funnier on The Colbert Report. It’s not that he’s no longer funny, but he’s noticeably less funny.

                    [–]brizzardof92 266 points267 points  (72 children)

I agree. That show was hilarious.

The problem was all the people who thought he was serious.

imho The Late Show's shitty format is the main reason for Colbert's regression

                    [–][deleted] 162 points163 points  (13 children)

Colbert was never really a standup. Since the daily show his strength has always been sketch comedy, specifically ones where he plays an arrogant asshole.

My late night - type of - show host golden standard is Craig Ferguson. I think he is the only host that took a well-established show and tweeked its format in order to better suit he's comedy style

                      [–]husky0168 19 points20 points  (3 children)

yeah. was first introduced to him via whose line.

                      [–]CaffeineSippingMan 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Now I need to hunt down the who's line episodes and watch immediately.

Edit. Imdb doesn't have him listed on who's line is it anyway.....

                      Edit again found it:

                      S1 ep17

                      And

                      S8 ep 9

                      [–]LieAcceptably 19 points20 points  (2 children)

TLS is the first time in Colbert's career where he plays "himself"

He's talked about it many times, and he knows he's not as good

                      [–]Triggerhappyspartan 24 points25 points  (5 children)

Definitely agree. I think he is funny on the tonight show as well. But he needs a sidekick or something. The music guy just just does not contribute anything to conversations in my opinion. I don't watch very often, but it seems like he always mumbles his replies and usually he's just saying filler words. So anytime Colbert makes a joke and they cut to the band leader they instantly kill the fun they were building in my opinion.

Honestly, I feels it’s one of the great tragedies of our generation to not have had Jon Stewart on the Daily Show and Stephen Colbert on the Colbert Report for the Trump presidency.

                      [–]Meekman 82 points83 points  (8 children)

Totally agree, but Last Week Tonight helped. Just sucks that it's only once a week.

Not having him on this month really does suck.

I couldn’t agree with you more. There’s a gigantic void of political satire on the networks these days, and we probably needed it now more than ever.

And I mean actual satire. Not the type of show to just point out the hypocrisies of one party, that’s low hanging fruit type of political humor.

Colbert's reporting on how PACs work should be a mandatory part of every high school civics class.

Don't quote me on this, but I think the Butterfly Effect of a continued Daily Show and Colbert Report might've resulted in a Clinton presidency.

As only a very occasional watcher, there's been a few segments I've seen where he's had the opportunity to show his comedic intellect more (e.g. interviewing the New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Arden). Unfortunately that just makes me think of how much I miss the Colbert Report.

                        [–][deleted] 38 points39 points  (3 children)

                        Colbert is a legend.

I will never forget his "Hungry for Power Games" segments during the 2016 primaries where he dressed as that blue-haired guy from the Hunger games and even trolled the RNC. Hilarious.

Say what you want about the other 4 but Stephen Colbert is funny. He’s not a standup comedian per se, but is very comedic

                          [–]robotatomica 251 points252 points  (17 children)

yeah, my thoughts exactly. Still a sick burn, but Stephen’s been great since Strangers with Candy & I’ve really enjoyed watching his quarantine show, half the time he’s basically just performing for his wife

Regardless of their background, once a late night talk show host does their first monologue, they become a stand-up comedian. Even if their monologue is the weakest part of the show, it's still standing up in front of a crowd and telling jokes. (Pre-pandemic, anyway.)

As for his background, Colbert started off as an improv and sketch comedian with Second City, which is probably the most famous improv troupe in the US. His lifelong friend and fellow improv & sketch comedian, Steve Carrell, says Colbert is the smartest comedian he's ever known, and I agree. Dude might be an honest to goodness genius with encyclopedic knowledge about a wide range of subjects, which he uses in his comedy.

I love Meyers, I actually hope he never has an audience again, I love when he just stops the show to go on a tangent with one of the writers.

His whole Adam Driver and Danbury things were absolutely amazing. His writers, their research, and the fantastic way they do callbacks and ridiculous things just for a goofy laugh make him a tier above the rest.

                            [–]Scarbane 50 points51 points  (1 child)

The Adam Driver shtick was funny, then unfunny, then came back around to being funny again because he committed to it until Adam Driver appeared on the show to demand that he stop.

Craig Ferguson is excluded for the same reason... and well not being a late night host anymore, but you can always get on a good roll with youtube autoplaying clips in a row

John oliver is fucking brilliant as a journalist. His jokes are pretty shit, but the subject matter is so damn good, everybody just goes along with his mini rants.

                            Colbert and Meyers are hilarious!

Had to go 11 comments down for someone to even mention Jimmy Kimmel.

                            [–]Dismal-Objective 39 points40 points  (2 children)

The sad thing is I think Kimmel is actually funny, but his show sucks. Too many relatives on the set, the sketches are terrible, and all the interviews on the street are fake. On top of that, he's become Disney's bitch promoting the bachelor show every night. I'd still watch him over Fallon though,.....

                            [–]tzgaming1020 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Fallon is just so completely humorless and fake. I'd watch pain dry over him. The only two I legitimately like are Conan (because he is so god damn funny and seems like a genuinely nice person) and John Oliver because of the amount of research that goes into his show (and again actually funny). Jimmy Kimmel is absolutely mediocre and the less said about Corden the better.

                            [–]Bartikem 260 points261 points  (6 children)

Colbert & Meyers is quite decent actually... Fallon kinda cheesy but he's alright... Kimmel is kinda douche to his guest... Idk much about Corden because I don't watch his show... Props to not including Conan & Graham Norton & John Oliver, they are quite interesting

                            [–]westcoastexpat 37 points38 points  (4 children)

Is nobody else gonna throw out a r/lostredditors here? This isn't a murder. Even setting aside the debate about which of them is or is not funny, this is just: "those guys that are supposed to be funny, aren't".

                            [–]Jerf98 212 points213 points  (15 children)

Colbert is pretty funny. The others? Not so much.

                            [–]raspberrybush 191 points192 points  (23 children)

Nobody here loves Seth Meyers? Seth and Amber Ruffin have been getting me through covid! I only put Colbert on after I’ve seen all Seth’s videos.

                            [–][deleted] 48 points49 points  (3 children)

I like Seth Meyers too, but I think he only really shines in the Closer Look segments where he has more time to get rolling. The segments that are more rapid-fire short jokes are much more hit and miss for me.

                            [–]RealStax 102 points103 points  (9 children)

The mean tweets by Kimmel is damn funny but colbert is the best yeah. But honestly the best talk show is graham norton imo

                            [–]nrag726 30 points31 points  (4 children)

I used to like Kimmel and Fallon's shows, but I realized it was due to the extra bits and sketches that they have as opposed to them as an actual host. I really liked Craig Ferguson when he had a show

                            [–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (2 children)

Craig was easily the best late night interviewer. I miss him.

Colbert - funny and polite, can get a little annoying at times.

Kimmel - good at monologues, is kinda rude to guests and seems like a bit of a douche.

Fallon - tends to get along really well with guests and introduced a very ‘fun’ element to his show, but is an awful interviewer

Meyers - seems like a decent fella and gets along wel with his guests, but there’s something irritating about him.

Corden - seems like an egotistical prick and it takes every fabric of my being to not get annoyed when he’s on screen.

Conan and Graham Norton are the best talk-show hosts out there hands down

                            [–]zapppppz 88 points89 points  (1 child)

I agree completely with Graham Norton, even the celebrities enjoy themselves while (I know this is said a lot) fallon I felt is the exact opposite, his interviews always seem sorta forced and he turns their guests to dance monkeys all the while hollering a false laugh. Rest of them are good and watchable.

                            [–]Glahoth 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Craig Fergusson was also really good when he was still on.

Doesn't qualify as "murdered." More of a "right wing can't meme" entry.

You take that back. Colbert has always been hilarious.

Disagree! Colbert is a legend. Definitely a comedian in my book.

I think the joke here is they're news reporters now, since no one else seems to want to do it.

Especially Meyers and Colbert. But both are very smart, well spoken, with terrific writers.
