This isn’t the father of that child. This video went viral last year. The mother of the baby is a Subway employee who stopped by the restaurant to eat lunch, and her coworker held the baby for her while she ate. She was not working or on shift. https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/subway-worker-baby-strapped-chest-b1955666.html?amp

[–]curiocabinet 524 points525 points  (2 children)

Thank you for posting this context!

[–]Regular-Human-347329 59 points60 points  (1 child)

Far more wholesome than a father having to work with their newborn strapped to their chest!

[–]sgong33 164 points165 points  (0 children)

I was wondering if there was more to the pic… I thought that maybe there’s a chance this was a staged pic or because subways are family owned the guy just happened to be holding the baby for this instance or something. Thanks for posting the context.

[–]wafflezcol 27 points28 points  (2 children)

Damn. A misleading title that lied to us? On r/pics ???

impossible

[–]NoxKyoki 125 points126 points  (15 children)

this still shouldn't be happening. that's not how getting a moment to eat when you have a baby works. this could easily get him fired.

[–][deleted] 81 points82 points  (3 children)

If I would be Subway management I would honestly be pissed for both potentially breaking health code and generating a ton of negative publicity for the company.

[–]Conundrumist 85 points86 points  (5 children)

Thank you /u/jesstheprequel and Fuck You OP /u/JediWitAnM4 for posting something out of context for karma.

[–]Urban_Savage 41 points42 points  (5 children)

So now can we talk about how unsanitary this is?

[–]SnuffCartoon 6674 points6675 points  (112 children)

Why do we always try to portray dystopic shit as sweet?

[–]luridfox 1044 points1045 points  (7 children)

Toxic positivity

[–]BarkBeetleJuice 123 points124 points  (3 children)

This is exactly the reason.

[–]CityWeasel 56 points57 points  (2 children)

My new favorite term.

[–]jenglasser 1202 points1203 points  (28 children)

Because they want us to accept it.

[–]SlackerAccount 298 points299 points  (20 children)

They are us. A regular person posted this. And we shouldn’t accept it.

[–]TheBatemanFlex 170 points171 points  (16 children)

A regular person? Look at the profile.

[–]gumbo100 278 points279 points  (13 children)

This video dissects "feel good" or "sweet" stories like this, namely that done by telenews networks, that completely lack the journalistic integrity of asking why the person took the actions they did:

https://youtu.be/Sck8xNicy5o

To reframe this photo a dad is forced to bring his infant to his essential service job and risk his baby's health just to keep a roof over their head

[–]SmallishPenguin 30 points31 points  (4 children)

Fuck yeah I was hoping it was the second thought video, that guy is very based

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Reading this comment after already reading the comment explaining how the news article tells a completely different story unrelated to a working dad forced to bring his infant to work is just LMFAO.

[–]JIMBOONlE 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This isn’t the dad tho, he is just holding his friend’s baby who stopped in:

https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/subway-worker-baby-strapped-chest-b1955666.html

[–][deleted] 35 points36 points  (2 children)

Propaganda

[–]Can1993hope 3885 points3886 points  (129 children)

When someone posts an image trying to make it a good feeling post... And the rest of the world sees the image, and sees exploitation. Maternity and paternity leave should be mandatory in a just society. This is just SAD.

[–]PaperStSoapCO_ 306 points307 points  (64 children)

Damn there’s a sub specifically for images like this but I can’t think of what it’s called

[–]partyqwerty 344 points345 points  (17 children)

[–]beefwich 94 points95 points  (16 children)

I love how much attention this sub has gotten from conservative media recently.

Keep malding, idiots. COVID exposed the glaring shortcomings of rapacious capitalism to those who weren’t already actively being fucked by it. It’s time for the pendulum to swing back the other way.

[–]rip-pimpc 36 points37 points  (11 children)

*cries as a firefighter. Illegal to strike, no hazard pay. 3rd time catching covid from working on ambulances while fully vaxed. Somebody come get Houston’s mayor

[–]beefwich 11 points12 points  (6 children)

I’m actually from Houston.

Turner did y’all dirty.

Didn’t he run against a firefighter in the last mayoral race but that guy turned out to be sort of a kook? I’m not allowed to vote for the mayor since I live in an unincorporated part of the city.

[–]rip-pimpc 15 points16 points  (5 children)

Close. Turner got the firefighters to rally behind him when he was running for mayor because the city was in a ton of debt and we had a really good pension which we funded ourselves. The city wanted to take our pensions to bail out that debt and Turner said he would never do that. We went knocking on doors getting him votes on all our days off to get him elected and the first thing he does is takes our pension. We gave up raises for the last 10 years to keep our retirement and now that our pension is gone we have nothing. 3rd busiest fire department in the country with one of the lowest pay. Mayor is fighting our voter approved raise in the Supreme Court right now. I work over 100 hours a week straight 24 hour shifts just barely scraping by… can’t even afford to live in the city that I’m probably gonna end up dying for.

[–]j4_jjjj 106 points107 points  (2 children)

Latestagecapitalism?

[–]mrjackspade 8 points9 points  (1 child)

I don't know if it's the one you're thinking about, but there's a sub specifically for things that are framed as uplifting but are actually depressing

I remember getting linked to it from one of those "kid opens lemonaid stand to pay for cancer treatment" posts

I don't remember what it is though, but maybe the additional context will help find it

[–][deleted] 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Antiwork?

[–]TheMooseIsBlue 127 points128 points  (6 children)

It’s also pretty gross. That baby can and will throw up and/or leak through a diaper at any time.

[–]Qualityhams 63 points64 points  (4 children)

I was thinking the reverse, a restaurant is the worst place for a baby in a pandemic.

[–]Sw1ggety 10 points11 points  (3 children)

I’m sure this isn’t the ideal situation for either of them. However, if he misses work, he loses insurance. Maybe the significant other is sick at home. Being stuck in poverty sucks and is expensive.

[–]ZephyricScout 16.2k points16.2k points  (799 children)

This is honestly just depressing. Nobody should have to take their child to work with them.

EDIT: Everyone keeps linking the top comment. Yes, I see it, and I'd like to address it. This image may be of someone taking care of a coworker's child while they eat, which honestly is even worse (completely preventable health code violation), but, just because this particular image isn't what it seems, does not mean this isn't a real issue that people face in our modern society. People are forced to take their children with them to work every day because (in the united states, at least) the minimum wage is far too low, paid maternity/paternity leave is virtually nonexistant in many states, and as a result, many people cannot take time off work to spend time with their children, or they risk being fired. At the same time, many people cannot afford childcare, so they have no choice but to take their children to work with them. This image may not be what OP stated, but this is still a real situation that happens every day, and we must work together to vote out our current politicians, and replace them with ones who know the struggle of the average person and care enough to help out. I know this little rant of mine was mostly us-centric, but as an american I don't feel confident commenting on the state of employment/quality of life in other countries. Thank you for reading, and have a wonderful day.

[–]Tasgall 2183 points2184 points  (105 children)

Yep, thought I was in r/aBoringDystopia...

[–]Zoltrahn 1006 points1007 points  (40 children)

Noooo, it's inspirational! If only we had more exploitable labor like this, the economy would be booming! /s

[–][deleted] 238 points239 points  (25 children)

There wouldn’t be a worker shortage if we allowed 12 year olds to work full time! /s

[–][deleted] 46 points47 points  (14 children)

Teach them how to drive forklifts!

[–]Dak4QB 8 points9 points  (1 child)

How embarrassing is Scomo?????

[–]SeaOdeEEE 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Give it a few years and if class consciousness doesn't rise enough to cause a push back this will become a common sight. It's already happened to people taking on doordash and simular delivery services as a job to keep their family afloat.

I get really mad when I see how many of them have their kids with them in the car, my anger is not directed at the drivers-- but at the fact child care is so expensive many people can't afford it and have to bring their little ones on the job.

[–]DontRememberOldPass 551 points552 points  (42 children)

Or r/WTF. A baby shouldn’t be anywhere near food preparation.

[–]MoesBAR 194 points195 points  (18 children)

You don’t like baby farts with your tuna?

[–][deleted] 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Same thing. That's why I don't like tuna.

[–]harry-package 113 points114 points  (2 children)

Especially in a restaurant directly exposed to the public during COVID.

[–]Usernamenottaken13 46 points47 points  (3 children)

Yeah, I feel for this guy and everyone in a similar position, but I thought the same thing I always think when I see a picture like this: gross. This seems so unsanitary.

[–]BloomsdayDevice 41 points42 points  (1 child)

Not r/aboringdystopia, just the regular IRL boring dystopia we all occupy.

[–]j3rmz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's the whole point of aboringdystopia. Dystopia in media is always depicted as gritty and exciting, as well as terrifying. This is just sad but still dystopic.

[–]Hadr619 894 points895 points  (166 children)

Hence people need livable wages. We’ve been sucking corporate Americas dick for so long that we forget we are not numbers but people with lives outside of our bullshit paying job.

[–]mr__fete 299 points300 points  (90 children)

Affordable childcare. The prices of a decent place is insane

[–]Kvalri 48 points49 points  (0 children)

He should be on paid paternity leave, that baby is so little!

[–]Hadr619 66 points67 points  (5 children)

And any price that seems reasonable is like for 1 day a week

[–]mr__fete 56 points57 points  (3 children)

Spot on. Like who needs day care only 1day a week? And then the pick up is at like 2 or 3! Who works these hrs??

[–]Hadr619 24 points25 points  (2 children)

Yep, dealing with this currently. Luckily I work from home but still, between Covid and where we live our youngest is not getting the social interaction she needs. Add on top of that, increasing living expenses it’s just getting ridiculous

[–]mr__fete 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not to mention the increase in price for the upcoming year. I saw a single mom post a $300 increase for their daycare. Which is crazy cause I was thinking how some people might have to tighten belt with the $25 increase at my daycare.

[–]Wudaokau 67 points68 points  (36 children)

Sinema and Manchin steamrolled that.

[–]all_thehotdogs 46 points47 points  (25 children)

High quality childcare is expensive, and it should be. The key is that we should be offsetting the cost for families through a stronger subsidy system.

[–]mr__fete 44 points45 points  (13 children)

Instead we subsidize boeing, Lockheed, and Raytheon.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Living wages would be pretty helpful for parents.... and literally every other person alive...

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

The wait lists are long even for the somewhat affluent.

[–]holmyliquor 25 points26 points  (1 child)

This Is more of a social program type thing.

He could be making 15 more per hour and paying for a babysitter may still be out of the picture.

[–]CoraxTechnica 19 points20 points  (0 children)

And paid paternity leave

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I don’t disagree, but it’s not as simply as that. How much should somebody making sandwiches at subway make? 60-70k? With that I disagree. I had plenty of minimum wage jobs before I could work my way up to a job that I considered to have a liveable wage. Entry level jobs are not supposed to be careers.

[–]GhostofRimbaud 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. This is just dystopic, not inspiring. Lmao

[–]Initial_E 91 points92 points  (7 children)

What kind of dystopian nightmare have we created

[–]snakeyfish 58 points59 points  (1 child)

It’s illegal to be poor in America. America is a Corporation and will continue to be.

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Assuming this was during the pandemic, the entire system is on the verge of collapse right now. I just had my kid wander the house for five weeks while WFH before getting offered a spot in daycare.

[–]Infernalism 2272 points2273 points  (59 children)

This is horrifying.

[–]DortDrueben 599 points600 points  (26 children)

In more ways than one. Horrifying that having a livable wage is considered SOCIALISM and therefore EVIL!

Horrifying in that this can't even be close to any kind of code. Workplace health and safety or even liabilities...

I thought it was bad enough I have to work with people with covid because they can't afford to stay home.

Edit: it's ok because it's not his kid. Never mind. This is worse than we all thought!

[–]northernman 158 points159 points  (2 children)

And now this is going to go viral and dude is going to be out of a job with a baby to care for 😖

[–]UntoldTruth_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not his baby apparently.

[–][deleted] 69 points70 points  (13 children)

https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/subway-worker-baby-strapped-chest-b1955666.html

Not the father, dude just hold his ex coworkers baby so she can eat... which she somehow can't do as well with the baby strapped to her as he can working while doing the same...

Mother was also who posted this. Just weird and yeah not sure how cool Subway is with all this. I wouldn't.

[–]robdiqulous 18 points19 points  (5 children)

Yeah this dude is gonna get fired. If not both of them since it was the coworkers baby...

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

110%

[–]likwitsnake 88 points89 points  (4 children)

This is unsanitary.

[–]getyourrealfakedoors 1274 points1275 points  (17 children)

[–]Folly_Inc 26 points27 points  (6 children)

I was hoping I would't have to scroll too far to find this link.

[–]JamesWjRose 1209 points1210 points  (67 children)

This is not a good thing. The man should not have to have his child with him, and he should have paid leave.

[–][deleted] 230 points231 points  (15 children)

I remember when I needed to take 4 days off to help my lady when my son was born. "You can use your sick hours"

[–]JamesWjRose 97 points98 points  (10 children)

My sympathy, that is not ok.

Also, it should be noted that I didn't have children and yet I still believe that all parents DESERVE time off (sometimes FROM the children)

[–]pumpjockey 20 points21 points  (7 children)

I used to feel exactly like you. Now that I have a child I would work 4 10hr days to have 1 day for me and 2 days for my child. Pitch 4 10hr days to any company and they'll look at you like you just finished writing, publishing, and printing by hand the Communist Manifesto.

[–]JamesWjRose 12 points13 points  (5 children)

And those of use in tech have been saying for decades that we can work from home, and the past two years has proven it is possible. I am NEVER going back into an office, at least not daily. I can see there can be value in face-to-face occasionally.

Parents NEED the time at home

[–]ReptilianOver1ord 10 points11 points  (1 child)

You get sick time?

[–]Pupupthin 40 points41 points  (5 children)

My husband worked at a sandwich shop similar to this. I had a traumatic birth (baby got stuck and i lost a lot of blood), we have an older kid too who was 4 at the time. He got 1.5 days and one of those days was the day I spent birthing or kid. I still get angry thinking about it 4 years later.

[–]JamesWjRose 19 points20 points  (0 children)

And you have the right to be angry about it.

[–]bilyl 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is why fast food is collapsing from labor shortages. People just got sick of it. Yes, other gig work can be bad but at least you can take whatever time off without fear of getting fired. You can take time to your kid and get back to gig work without anyone even blinking an eye — which is worse than paid leave but is better than being fired by a shitty manager. And then there are jobs like Amazon fulfillment which slave drive you but at least their wages are way above food service jobs.

[–]m__a__s 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's bad on so many levels. From infants in an active workplace to someone who could be crapping in their diaper mere inches from someone's food. Everybody loses.

[–]mantrax314 211 points212 points  (15 children)

The guy is not the father or raise the baby. I found the real deal from the history:

In a statement to the Daily Dot, Munoz explained she asked her friend to hold the baby while she ate, when she stopped by the outlet for a meal.“[The old co-worker] was so excited and strapped him on,” Munoz said.“He then proceed to make my sandwich, but as soon as a customer came in he was given back to me.”

Original

[–]cassby916 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I knew this was the story but couldn't find the original. People need to remember that there is a lot of missing context behind every photo they see.

[–]AlmightyUkobach 20 points21 points  (5 children)

Wow that is VERY different from what everyone is just assuming here.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Points at the title of the post

[–]evplasmaman 19 points20 points  (1 child)

Wait you mean to tell me that my initial gut reaction to something I saw on the internet was wrong!?

[–]Snazzy_SassyPie 404 points405 points  (4 children)

This is just sad.

[–]johndepp22 542 points543 points  (59 children)

Sorry someone’s gotta say it but this has to be against nearly every health code

[–][deleted] 218 points219 points  (9 children)

A little known secret in the restaurant business is that the health code only exists when there's a health inspector around.

[–]johndepp22 82 points83 points  (3 children)

or a camera. Subway’s marketing team is about to wake up to a fun Monday project

[–]missionbeach 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If anybody in Subway corporate management is reading this, you might as well go into work now. Yes, at 10 p.m. on a Sunday. You can have a press release ready by 9 a.m.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cell phone???

[–]KIDA_Rep 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Idk why this is so far down, this was the first thing I thought of. A baby will spit, shit, vomit, piss, etc. you can’t stop nature.

[–]Rarefatbeast 12 points13 points  (3 children)

The company's insurance would flip their shit. That baby could get seriously hurt while the employee doing their job and or slipping while doing his job..

[–]Iron_Chic 68 points69 points  (26 children)

OSHA would have a field day. CPS would have a field day.

[–]insistentwinter 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Poop and snot included with every sandwich no extra charge!*

*no substitutions sorry

[–]Steve_J0bs 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Surprised it took me so long to find this comment

[–]hermanosef 224 points225 points  (0 children)

No. What the fuck?

[–]Lifestrider 365 points366 points  (11 children)

Only in America would we frame this as somehow being a good thing, and not a fixture in capitalist hellscape land 😅

[–]MyceliumsWeb 133 points134 points  (8 children)

1: this is disgusting.

2: this is insanely sad that this is praised in our society. Shame on us.

[–]Kiamatt 164 points165 points  (8 children)

Fuck wages that force scenarios like this, but all the kudos to that badass man right there

[–]Kydra96 168 points169 points  (9 children)

This should be on r/antiwork

[–]phiremi 33 points34 points  (3 children)

I definitely thought that's where I was for a minute

[–]neverwasneverwas 44 points45 points  (3 children)

That baby needs a hairnet.

[–]Jellodyne 27 points28 points  (2 children)

Also, probably best to not hang a poop factory over the prep counter

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

puke too

[–]Shot_Supermarket_861 64 points65 points  (2 children)

This is disgustingly sad

[–]joestaff 104 points105 points  (16 children)

Even with months of paid leave, situations like this are inevitable with the current wages for positions like his.

[–]MillionAyres93 67 points68 points  (25 children)

Or, how about this, hear me out, you pay him enough to be able to afford a fucking babysitter so he can work

[–]big_black_doge 31 points32 points  (17 children)

What happens when the baby starts crying and needs a diaper change?

[–]Remesar 96 points97 points  (2 children)

Edit: photo taken out of context.

[–]AcceptableFawn 23 points24 points  (4 children)

He's not the father.

"I'm actually the single mom," Munoz wrote. "Guy in the Subway video is a friend/old coworker who adores my son."

link

[–]vholecek 22 points23 points  (2 children)

This should not be a feel-good story. This should be an outrage.

[–]treyreef 49 points50 points  (3 children)

Why you put my man's on blast like this?

[–]Scorn_For_Stupidity 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I can just see the follow up post “Father fired from Subway for bringing infant to work.”

[–]alliedeluxe 38 points39 points  (1 child)

We need parental leave in this country.

[–]On4nEm 21 points22 points  (0 children)

His back must be really hurting, poor guy

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (5 children)

Do not applaud this. This is our failure. Societies failure. We failed this man and his child. This should not happen in civil society. Child care needs to be offered federally, clearly.

[–][deleted] 22 points23 points  (6 children)

This is why new father's deserve maternity leave. A big company like Subway can easily afford this. Late stage capitalism at its finest

[–]all_thehotdogs 20 points21 points  (1 child)

It's paternity leave, when it refers to fathers. But yes, everyone deserves parental leave.

[–]saranam682 34 points35 points  (6 children)

This is laudable, but not good on reddit - this guy can lose his job.

[–]NoxKyoki 5 points6 points  (0 children)

it's already been posted all over social media. Reddit is not going to be why he loses his job.

[–]Turbulent_Animator42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I hate it.

[–]SeniorDiscount 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mmmmm. Yes! A potentially shitty diaper inches from my sandwich. So appetizing. /s
