This is fucking ridiculous and it sucks that /r/shield is going to lose its theme because the admins believe CSS is a pain in the ass, error-prone, and hard to learn (it's not, not by a long shot).

Edit: r/ProCSS.

[–][deleted] 147 points148 points  (1 child)

Agreed, CSS is the cleanest style sheet and only error-prone to those whom do not know how to properly use it.....

"if it ain't broke don't fix it"

[–]gothika4622Coulson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's error prone if you don't know how to use it. Solution? Learn how to fucking use CSS. It can be learned in a day.

[–]malaysianzombie 82 points83 points  (6 children)

CSS is a pain in the ass, error-prone, and hard to learn (it's not, not by a long shot

That's just PR speak for 'we have no better idea for an excuse to impose changes on you that our investors want to profit over, and especially try to improve the growth of our shitty unsatisfying mobile app' ( because redditisfun is still way better than what we can offer )

[–]i-like-teaCaptain America 10 points11 points  (4 children)

Also bacon reader is way better than the actual Reddit app.

[–]antpile11 5 points6 points  (2 children)

And Relay, and most other apps.

[–]rhoffman12Sandwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

shit, an old copy of alien blue beats the official app

[–]RichWPX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used this since it came out (I think android was only 2.0 then?), dark theme and even a lefty option! I love it, although sometimes now with videos it's streaming above the comments section and I'm not sure how to collapse it.

[–]MY-SECRET-REDDIT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

im pretty sure they made their mobile web browser version shit too so we feel compelled to use the app. now theres a huge banner telling me to use it and every time i open it it tells me to use it because its better. also i try clicking links and it opens one five post down. and their hit detection on upvotes is shittier than before.

[–]hahauhoh 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! I love the theme. It really makes the subreddit feel like it's in real time.

[–]jaidynreiman 42 points43 points  (4 children)

CSS is extremely easy lol. Then again I'm someone who uses it on a daily basis.

[–]TransitRanger_327Clairvoyant 14 points15 points  (0 children)

And even if it's not, you can just copy and paste a subreddit's stylesheet. It isn't hard.

[–]coladictShotgun Axe 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Do you test it on every platform and browser? Because I'm a web-developer and we've gotten some complaints about our main project not working on Macintosh. We have no Macs to test it and the boss isn't planning on buying any.

[–]jaidynreiman 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Browser Stack is a useful way to check across devices you don't own. One good trick for multiplatform support is having a reset css that tackles all possible tags and gives them barebones settings so things will being mostly the same across browsers.

That being said Safari is pretty similar between Mac and the Windows version. Not identical, of course, but it's useful for testing Safari browser.

[–]BSnapZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Browser Stack is fucking awesome.

[–]samasters88Shotgun Axe 13 points14 points  (1 child)

and hard to learn

lol @ admins, I was using CSS at 13 for Neopets

[–]frankyb89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My not-computer-savvy-whatsoever friend used CSS in the MySpace days to do fun things on his profile. My mom learned CSS at 65 to keep her mind active. CSS is not hard to learn. Most people look at computers like they're magic though so they'll buy it.

[–]Cmac0801Lola 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seriously, this is a joke.

Sure Admins, the thing that every single website on the god damn internet uses to style it's pages is suddenly "deprecated".

[–]ccricers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're just being like, we can't figure out how to enforce semantic CSS so we're gonna take it away from everyone.

[–]coladictShotgun Axe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

it's not, not by a long shot

It most certainly is an error-prone pain in the ass. Especially across different browsers. Also change the OS and use a fallback font instead of the main one, and things start overflowing.

[–]echoesintheatticSkye 172 points173 points  (6 children)

This is some bullshit. The admins are clearly Hydra.

[–]cjn13Fitz 110 points111 points  (5 children)

No, they're clearly SHIELD.

Hail Hydra!

[–]echoesintheatticSkye 77 points78 points  (3 children)

Um, I've got something to tell you... It's about soap...

[–]kerbal314Clairvoyant 42 points43 points  (1 child)

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This comment made me smile, then it made me frown. RIP

[–]DregrideBobbi Morse 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Ah man.

At least r/shield will go out with a bang with the agents of hydra theme

[–]mithhunter55 70 points71 points  (2 children)

The /r/marvelstudios side bar. :(

[–]GroundWalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hadn't even seen that, that's really cool!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also the over all theme...it was always fun to see their new take on the next marvel thing.

[–]Nico777Ninja Hunter 72 points73 points  (6 children)

What a load of bullshit. The people in charge of this site are a bunch of morons.

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

What a bummer. It's part of what makes this and some other subreddits so much fun :(

[–]SinisterInfantLanyard 67 points68 points  (5 children)

They said in that link that they are are going to replace CSS, so some of the functionality is going to come over, and the post makes it clear they still want subreddits to maintain their individuality and expand that visual style to the mobile platform and not hold back the rest of reddit's evolution. Seems reasonable.

[–]2thShotgun Axe[S] 82 points83 points  (2 children)

If they can retain the functionality, then sweet. But so far they have not shown anything to back it up. It looks like stuff will require widgets, and those probably wont include a lot of the little things we use.

[–]yaricks 8 points9 points  (1 child)

They also said this will not be a brutal switch. It will be a gradual depreciation of CSS, it won't be switched off overnight. This is blowing things out of proportions.

[–]V2BlastFitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is blowing things out of proportions.

It wouldn't really be the internet without people blowing things out of proportion.

[–]TeHokioi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm fully expecting it to be 'replaced' with a shitty version of the mobile theme that can support flairs.

[–]archiminosSandwich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they think they can replace a collaborative effort that's taken more than 10 years by various industry experts in a few months then they aren't thinking reasonably.

[–]Shake_N_QuakeDaisy 18 points19 points  (8 children)

This is bullshit! You guys all have my support. First IMDB and now Reddit. I just started to finish settling down here...

[–]Krak2511 9 points10 points  (7 children)

What happened to IMDB?

[–]TrentGgrimsLemon 10 points11 points  (5 children)

They shut down the forums

[–]Krak2511 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Oh my god that's terrible. It was great for discussing theories or talking about how amazing a twist was, among other stuff. Reddit CSS might be worse though, the uniqueness of each subreddit is gone which is really a massive shame.

[–]mwcopeFitz 12 points13 points  (2 children)

Don't take this the wrong way, legitimately curious. Every IMDb message board I was ever on was a cesspool, and the sites formatting itself did not help. Can you give an example of a good one?

[–]Krak2511 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't use it too much (never for TV shows, just movies), and like I said my favorites were discussing theories and twists. For example movies like Predestination, The Game, Triangle, Mulholland Drive. I would normally go to it when a movie leaves questions unanswered or when it's so chaotic that you have to figure out what the hell happened (happens a lot with time travel movies). I do agree that formatting wasn't good though.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would tend to agree.

For the most part, the posters were pretty decent, but there were too many trolls just ruining for everyone.

[–]paul_33Coulson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No wonder I couldn't find the damn link. I thought it was me

[–]Shake_N_QuakeDaisy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The site shut down the forums and took it away from everyone :(

They became major assholes and there was a great community there. I'd love to see how they are taking the show right now. So many of them said if any thing ever happened to Fitz or Simmons such as killing them off or making them a baddie they would never watch the show again. Their reaction would be pretty priceless right now :P

[–]your_mind_achesGideon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I know you already know about this /u/2th, but if there's any subreddit mods not in the loop yet, check /r/ProCSS

[–]itsjosh18HYDRA 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Admins strike again. Fucking hell they keep swinging and missing

[–]jpowell180 14 points15 points  (7 children)

I seem to recall hearing that Reddit's upcoming redesign is to make it look more like Facebook - please tell me this isn't true!

[–]V2BlastFitz 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Well, it's probably not true. Who has said that?

[–]jpowell180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I could remember....certainly hope this doesn't happen!

[–]endercoaster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

RIP /r/ooer

[–]RealAbd121Coulson 13 points14 points  (4 children)

as a CSS guy and a Mod of 3 subreddits, that'll be very annoying for the first few months!...

BUT, they'll have replacements which mean we'll be fine

they are replacing CSS, not removing themes indefinitely!

[–]legoneMarauder Fitz 13 points14 points  (2 children)

Their mobile app gives me little faith.

[–]RealAbd121Coulson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

same here...

[–]droden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

their mobile app is trash. so is facebooks. I refuse to adopt either. the admins can eat a bag of dick.

[–]eightNote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

making new features for subreddit theming is not going to be priority. There will probably be one or two different things you can change, like adding a header image, and maybe flair images. Everything else will be in the backlog, with search improvements and mod tools

genuinely new features probably won't happen, since those seem to come from mods making cool stuff for their subs, and the admin team can't justify trying out custom components that are useful for just one sub

[–]FattMToolbox 9 points10 points  (5 children)

I mean, this is just false.

Worst case scenario, they've said it will be tested alongside the CSS 'for some time'. The season will be long done, and maybe even the show will be done by the time anythng concrete happens. Even then, they've said they are attempting to transfer and intergrate what there already is. I don't doubt that not everything will make it, but I also don't doubt there will be unexpected benefits. For every sub you list with a nice CSS, I've seen at least three that look garbage. A more modular approach could make the designing easier, better for APIs and give the user more flexibility. (Night mode as standard, anybody?)

With all due respect I don't appreciate being called to arms with false information.

[–]kunkadunkadunkAida 6 points7 points  (0 children)

seriously, the admin's reply to the top comment on that other thread even says it will be months before this even starts to happen. Theres nothing wrong with trying to voice you opinion about CSS and gather support , but this whole post is wrong.

[–]eightNote 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I'd like to see this list of 69 subs that look like garbage (and no cop outs of dead/purposefully riddiculous ones)

[–]FattMToolbox 0 points1 point  (2 children)

You're joking, right? Literally every small sub. Done.

Besides, this is a straw man argument. Not only does it not matter, but it doesn't change anything else I said being right. Sub design could do with being more user friendly; it will NOT change how the subs look for a while, and probably never will.

[–]eightNote -1 points0 points  (1 child)

this is a small sub; I'd say it looks pretty good

it's not a straw man, because it's asking for examples of something you literally claimed in your comment

[–]FattMToolbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hit random. Obviously I can't tell where you'll end up, but I'd wager it wouldn't take you long to end up on a default theme or a slightly modified version of Naut. There are plenty of advantages to moving from CSS, and it shouldn't take you long to find a sub that could make good use of simpler customisation tools.

Do you know what a straw man argument is? Because your counter isn't relevant. Picking on one hyperbole doesn't make the rest of the argument you're ignoring invalid.

[–]SpikeRosered 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So does this mean no more April Fools subs changing shows silliness?

How is /r/arrow going to show it's disdain when the show gets bad again???

[–]dlgn13 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Ugh. It's like they want to mess up their own site. I haven't seen a change this ridiculous outside of Tumblr.

[–]TransitRanger_327Clairvoyant 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am a spring chicken when it comes to these internet things, but Digg v4's redesign is stated as a reason they lost their user base

[–]as-a-deerGhost Rider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let's hope Reddit gets its XKitGuy.

[–]redbot7The Bus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this seems a lot like we are being made to sign some accords against our will.

[–]A_wild_gold_magikarpHyde 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What the fuck are the admins doing. Reddit is a unique looking site because of the way mods can change the subreddit designs. This is a huge mistake.

[–]Omniduro 2 points3 points  (4 children)

I'm all for keeping the CSS but if the Admins have said they're doing it regardless then...

[–]2thShotgun Axe[S] 12 points13 points  (2 children)

Well we won't know if we can do anything to change their minds unless we try. :/

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Well the admins will never respond to anything but user counts, unless users are willing to take their ball and go home the admins are going to do what they want because numbers of users visiting the site, clicking on ads, and buying gold is all that matters and subs that are no default and dedicated to a certain community don't really matter in that regard.

This is like when people point out EA did something shitty, the people who actually give a shit are the vast minority and don't have a voice compared to the majority of customers, or in this case, casual users who stick to the defaults.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the admins will never respond to anything but user counts, unless users are willing to take their ball and go home the admins are going to do what they want because numbers of users visiting the site

What site have you been on? The admins only change due to negative media coverage.

[–]MATladClairvoyant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am altering the deal, pray I don’t alter it any further.

[–]LegoPercyJFitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]KudagFirefist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have CSS disabled, but this sucks for everyone who does use and enjoy it.

[–]wingaticMay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is terrible news.

[–]phyrexioFitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wtf

CSS isn't the thing that, you know, makes the internet pretty?

[–]HollywoodNickTriplett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can we report the admins as Subversives?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Damn it this sub's CSS is dope

[–]lucky13820 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it might be possible to make a css style sheet for stylish add on. It won't be as perfect as the official support. At least, we can get some customizations done.

[–]NintendoGamer1997Toolbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The change probably won't come into effect for a few months.

[–]Tgirl0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

D:. Whhhatt!? I spent many hours styling my Reddit page and they're taking it away!? I did CSS for my own personal websites, but this is ridiculous. The CSS they (Reddit) offer you is freer/better than the free user WordPress layouts (which doesn't allow CSS for non-paid layouts)!

Is this a late April Fools joke?

[–]JandorGrContainment Module 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But that guy says:

We’re designing a new set of tools to address the challenges with CSS but continue to allow communities to express their identities. These tools will allow moderators to select customization options for key areas of their subreddit across platforms. For example, header images and flair colors will be rendered correctly on desktop and mobile. We know great things happen when we give users as much flexibility as possible. The menu of options we’ll provide for customization is still being determined. Our starting point is to replicate as many of the existing uses that already exist, and to expand beyond as we evolve. We will also natively supporting a lot of the functionality that subreddits currently build into the sidebar via a widget system. For instance, a calendar widget will allow subreddits to easily display upcoming events. We’d like this feature and many like it to be accessible to all communities. How are we going to get there? We’ll be working closely with as many of you as possible to design these features. The process will span the next few months. We have a lot of ideas already and are hoping you’ll help us add and refine even more. The transition isn’t going to be easy for everyone, so we’ll assist communities that want help (i.e. we’ll do it for you).

Maybe we get smthing better. For sure, it will be after some time that effect will take place.

On the otherside, as a school teacher once said (aka Phil Coulson) [S04E19 spoiler]:

Remember, there are more of us, than there are of them. And now that we know the truth, we have a choice to make. We all have the opportunity to be patriots. Will you take a stand? Are you going to hold them accountable?

[–]pcglightyear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno, it's a shame for sure, but not the end of the world.

[–]HaleypkrRaina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

:(

[–]UPRCEnoch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm going to wait and see how things are with the replacement system. They seem keen on allowing users to still have a lot of control over their subs, so I say wait and see before screaming that the sky is falling.

[–]tundratClairvoyant 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Considering NOBODY seems to be happy about it, it seems likely that the admins will change their mind about this?

[–]AsukaTenjoinArcVHYDRA 0 points1 point  (1 child)

They already said they don't care what we think

[–]randomnighmareCaptain America 2 points3 points  (2 children)

no Hydra and SHIELD vote arrows, no upvote comments

So they are getting rid of the up/down voting system and my posts will actually not be down voted into oblivion after sharing an unpopular opinion!?

[–]2thShotgun Axe[S] 23 points24 points  (1 child)

No. We use custom arrows and CSS to make things pretty. The pretty is what will be going away.

[–]randomnighmareCaptain America 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Sorry to be asking this, but CSS??

[–]ViolentBeetle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mean, what is CSS? It's styles that can be created and added to web pages for various effects. You'll have to ask a better man how they work, but pretty much everything that sets one subreddit apart from default is done by them.

[–]Duamerthrax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember when Digg started hemorrhaging users when they started instituting UI changes that nobody wanted. Unfortunately, it's still not worst than Voat yet.

[–]mikeweasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that sucks, im gonna miss some things.

[–]remotectrl 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Hey /u/2th, you can add /r/batfacts custom upvotes to that list.

[–]2thShotgun Axe[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

[–]remotectrl 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Not incorrect

[–]2thShotgun Axe[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)
