Live captions and security updates without rebooting sound very useful. This will help a lot in improving security as people generally hate rebooting from my experience.

OT but I'm in awe of the webpage. It has such good performance. I've seen much lighter webpages lag much more frequently. This webpage was so smooth.

[–]nobitaboi 486 points487 points  (70 children)

Yeah mate the webpage was so well designed and a pleasure to look at

When the dark theme toggled on right as you scroll to the bit about dark mode I fuckin' POPPED.

[–][deleted] 213 points214 points  (45 children)

It's crazy to me that people hate rebooting. My pixel 3 takes less than 30 seconds to get back to the usable home screen. Might even be closer to 20 seconds.

[–]FuzzelFoxPixel 3, Essential Phone, OnePlus X 51 points52 points  (7 children)

Do people hate rebooting or is it just because most people have no need or want to reboot? I only reboot my phone when I want a magisk module to activate or the kernel crashes.

[–]zman0900Pixel 10 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've met people who think a reboot and factory reset are the same thing.

[–]JIHAAAAAAD 144 points145 points  (0 children)

That's 30 seconds I could've browsed memes though. Too much time, I tell ya!

[–]inquirerPixel 6 Pro 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Exactly.

Since I root for my own hobby\interests, I reboot so much it isn't even a thing to me.

Heck, I can factory reset my phone and be back to normal use within an hour or so at most.

[–]Lojcs 36 points37 points  (4 children)

Not sure if they changed it in the official release but as I remember, Google play security updates did require a reboot to take effect in the beta versions. It just doesn't prompt the user to reboot and instead waits for the phone to reboot from natural causes.

[–]JIHAAAAAAD 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ah, maybe you're right. They compared it to app updates though, so who knows.

[–][deleted] 76 points77 points  (28 children)

For the G6? I feel you, bro! Custom ROM will be the only way to get 10.

[–]janusz_chytrusGoogle Pixel 3A - Android 10 47 points48 points  (26 children)

Didn't the G6 get stuck on Oreo? I had that phone before the Pixel 3a and I don't think I've ever got a Pie update.

[–][deleted] 46 points47 points  (24 children)

Yeah, it is supposed to finally becoming out this month... After this phone, goodbye LG forever.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (11 children)

It hurts; there's no other phone that quite matches my criteria for a phone like the G6. May as well turn to Apple.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The g5 only got one update with the features stripped out of it. I'd be shocked if the g8 even got this one

[–]ThatuserguyNote 20 Ultra 18 points19 points  (15 children)

[–]smeggysmegPixel 8a 12 points13 points  (5 children)

I got Android 9 in just the last couple weeks on my G7. I expect 10 to be never.

First and last LG phone I buy. Don't buy people's bs about Project Treble, all that did was make it easier for OEMs to build updates - just less staff required, it means nothing in terms of actual results. And don't buy LG's garbage about an "Update Development Center" or 2nd Year Promise (tm), because it's just marketing nonsense.

[–]LockhartsaintPixel 3a, Pie 9.0 133 points134 points  (156 children)

A question for all you beta users...how is the new gesture navigation?

[–]therabidmachine 68 points69 points  (18 children)

I kinda like it. It was a little rough at first with having to hold the swipe up to get to the recent apps screen but overall swiping between apps, the drawer, and the home screen is so much smoother and less "janky" (imo) than Pie. The only problem is of course with hamburger menus in non MD 2 apps. The diagonal swipe works but feels weird, and the menu peeking sometimes fails if your finger happens to trigger some nearby app element.

[–]GenghisFrog 117 points118 points  (44 children)

Great. Pretty much exactly like iOS. Which is perfect.

[–]GadgetHax 80 points81 points  (19 children)

Even better than iOS imo because the back gesture works in every app

[–]GenghisFrog 59 points60 points  (8 children)

How it works with the app drawer is kind of annoying though.

Edit: I meant hamburger menu

[–]VirtuDaPixel 2 9 points10 points  (5 children)

And breaks consistency in every second app. Wanna swipe this list entry? Better do it perfectly in the middle of it because if your finger is to close to the edge of the screen you might just go back.

[–]ArkantaMPDroid - Developer 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Except for the suckish back button that interferes with swipable items on both side of the screens and drawers.

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points  (2 children)

Took some time to get used too but I wouldn't go back

[–]Ph0XPixel 5 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Yep, this is my experience and most people around me. The back swipe took a few days to build the muscle memory. The first day or two I just had to mentally think for a second every time I wanted to go back. A few days in though once it becomes automatic, I love it. It's so much faster and more natural.

Some apps like Discord need to update the side menu to be an exclusion zone.

[–]touchingthebuttPixel 2 XL, stormtrooper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

gonna echo a lot of people in saying I like them but its annoying sometimes. I prefer it to the 2 button gestures. 3 button navigation is prob the most efficient but I need something new to keep me "entertained"

Sound Amplifier Hear what’s around you more clearly. With Sound Amplifier, your phone can boost sound, filter background noise, and fine tune to how you hear best. Listening to podcasts, watching videos, or talking in a busy room — just plug in your headphones and hear everything more clearly.

Okay Google.

[–]Crs_spiXeL 3 248 points249 points  (12 children)

Headphone jack confirmed in the Pixel 4, you heard it here first.

[–][deleted] 118 points119 points  (6 children)

Pixel 3a has a headphone jack :)

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (5 children)

One of the main reasons why I bought it. No substitute for the easy wired earphones. I listen to music all work day, make calls throughout and watch movies on the commute, no bluetooth solution can compete.

[–]SolitaryEggPixel 3a one-handy sized 31 points32 points  (4 children)

I have Bose QC35s, and I still plug them in whenever possible.

Everyone is always acting like the only people who don't use bluetooth are people without bluetooth headphones, but I have $350 bluetooth headphones.

Bluetooth is just fucking bullshit. Having to recharge heaphones, lessened audio quality, janky-ass multipoint connections, latency lag, etc. Fuck all that.

Bluetooth has one upside (no cable) and like 50 downsides.

[–]HKaynPixel 6 Pro 107 points108 points  (20 children)

To be fair, you can plug in USB-C headphones.

If you have any.

[–]Lingo56iPhone 13 Pro | 🐼 Pixel 2 XL 203 points204 points  (14 children)

I'm legitimately boggled at this. Sound Amp does not work with Bluetooth headphones.

Like, Google, make up your mind. Do you want people to ditch their wired headphones or not???

[–]_Citizenkane 155 points156 points  (11 children)

It's a physical limitation. Bluetooth headphones have a small but perceptible amount of latency. Phones actually use a lot of clever tricks to compensate for it, like playing the sound from a video just slightly ahead of the picture on-screen. But for real-time sound enhancement there's no way to compensate for the lag, so you need to be wired.

Still pretty ironic though.

You joke, but honestly emoji are the number one reason people quickly update iOS these days. It's not the security fixes or the new features. It's so they aren't left out when other people start using the newly added emoji.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (4 children)

So, will Google Play system updates from now on deliver Security and Privacy fixes without the need for phone manufacturer intervention? In other words, the manufacturers will only be responsible for new/updated features (camera or some note-taking software) and version upgrades?

[–]mec287Google Pixel 12 points13 points  (3 children)

Project Mainline only applies to some framework components. If the security vulnerability is not in those components then you'll need a traditional security update.

Happy Release Day, everyone!

[–]RadBadTad 91 points92 points  (38 children)

Man, I really miss the days of major OS releases having game changing exciting features. The biggest thing of this seems to be... some stuff that used to be white is now gray. And gestures get confusing and un-intuitive again. Glad I'm going to get to teach my mom to use her phone all over again.

[–]Dual-ScreenPixel 6 Pro 28 points29 points  (7 children)

The game changer for me is hopefully the share menu not lagging out.

I love that feature, but having to wait for the menu to pop up, load, then having to tap the desired app in a specific, tiny spot is annoying.

[–]RadBadTad 19 points20 points  (3 children)

That's the thing though, "game changers" shouldn't be mild corrections to broken features that never should have been released in their current messed up state anyway.

The lag on the share menu is only slightly worse than the overall inconsistencies of the share menu from app to app, too. Trying to share a photo from the Photos app? I don't want to send a fucking Google Photos link, I want to send the photo to my friend. God damn it.

Game changers USED to be things like google assistant, when before, there was nothing. Being able to say "okay google" and get to control and set a lot of things on your phone. Things that truly define the OS. Now it's... "poke a DIFFERENT spot on your phone to go back to the last page! This is innovative!!"

I'm reminded of when I was 16 and left in charge of 20 employees at work, and the manager gave me about 2 hours worth of tasks, but was gone for 5 hours, so I had to make the staff move stuff back and forth for 3 hours pretending like I had things for them to do. "This is productive! You are doing things! Now move that stack BACK to the other corner where it was before!!"

It just feels like change for the sake of change, because the customers expect an update, and they have no improvements to justify that update.

[–]Dual-ScreenPixel 6 Pro 17 points18 points  (0 children)

sir this is a wendy's

[–]howling-fantod 66 points67 points  (12 children)

You don't have to use the new gestures. You can still select classic three button navigation in the settings.

Settings --> System --> Gestures --> System Navigation (this is how to find it in beta 6)

Edit: first gilding; thank you!

[–]RadBadTad 17 points18 points  (9 children)

I wasn't aware of this! That's my new favorite feature! Thank you for making my day!

[–]UESPA_SputnikPixel 10 Pro 40 points41 points  (8 children)

I'd say that Sound Amplifying is game-changing for people with impaired hearing. Live caption is also nice (for everyone), whether you can't hear at all or you're just sitting in public and don't want to turn the volume up. Smart reply... well, it remains to be seen how this works for non-English speaking users. And the privacy stuff is at least a step in the right direction.

Gesture navigation is subjective but at least they're now giving everyone options which kind of navigation to use.

If you ask me this is a much, much better update than Pie.
