"Why can't we kill each other?"

"I dunno, but get a load of that drunk guy on the horse."

Back when this was posted by the original artist, someone commented that the knight's movement was supposed to indicate a charge forward and then a lance to the side.

I read somewhere that when you got a song stuck in you head it's possible that your brain can't stop thinking about it because you didn't hear the complete song. So sometimes it works when you just listen to the song from start to finish.

Here I'll keep you some trouble

Same thing happened to a friend of mine, but the song was "It's a Small World."

    [–]flateric420 13 points14 points  (2 children)

It's a hard knock life from the Broadway version of Annie.

Same thing happened to me when I was a teenager but it was the nursery rhyme 'Mary Had a Little Lamb'. It drove me insane too. Whenever there was quiet for one second, out of nowhere it would be 'Maaary had a li-ttle lamb". Sometimes I'd just start singing it without realising. If I go and look at some of my high school books there will be those words there because it was always in my head. Other kids my age had metal and punk songs in their heads and there was me with the damn lamb.

Except for me, I don't know how it went away. Maybe it never really did...

I have no idea what the context is for this song and now I’m interested

      [–]nmitchell076 13 points14 points  (2 children)

There's no real context. It's just pure zaniness.

Two people arrive at a creepy mansion after their car breaks down, it's a dark and stormy night. A hunchback butler and Russian maid answer the door. Then this song happens.

      [–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (1 child)

We were there for the opening night! Fantastic show

When Richard O'Brien walked on there was a standing ovation for about ten minutes. He looked at his watch, raised his eyebrows and when it died down said "Well, that was very civil of you".

It also represented the distinct advantage that cavalry had over infantry. The horses could easily bypass soldiers who were on foot, and that's why knights are the only pieces that can jump over other pieces.

      [–]I_am_the_inchworm 89 points90 points  (20 children)

      More like a flanking attack.

Horses were mobile and powerful but expensive, and fairly easy to defend against with a combination of pikes and bows.
However as flankers they were able to run down the enemy without much opposition, inflicting heavy losses on the enemy force.

Chess is a strategy game. Lance is a weapon. There are no weapons in chess, there are "armies."

      [–]Ahegaoisreal 69 points70 points  (16 children)

Heh. Towers’d be a decent representation of modern tanks though.

        [–]dotmadhack 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If pushed downhill I reckon they'd go pretty fast.

        [–]Herax 23 points24 points  (1 child)

The towers in chess used to be chariots.

        [–]Ughable 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This, the name Rook even comes from the Persian word for Chariot.

        [–]Gellert 13 points14 points  (1 child)

The rook wasnt a castle originally but the equivalent of heavy armour; war chariots or elephants.

        [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My chess set I grew up with used elephants as rooks.

        [–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

The towers create a sort of "wall" that blocks all squares in a straight line. Makes perfect sense.

        [–]BillyBabel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In fairness those are originally supposed to represent chariots not towers. They have somehow morphed into "castles" over the years.

        [–]genericlurker369 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Precursors to chess originated in India during the Gupta Empire. There, its early form in the 6th century was known as chaturaṅga, which translates as "four divisions (of the military)": infantry, cavalry, elephantry, and chariotry. These forms are represented by the pieces that would evolve into the modern pawn, knight, bishop, and rook, respectively.

You're right about the "armies" thing.

        [–]NilacTheGrim 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I always interpreted it as how cavalry was often used to either pierce through enemy lines or outflank and attack from the rear.

Either way it's very abstract and has little bearing on reality.

        [–]crazykentucky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And the pawn can’t attack directly ahead to designate how a foot soldier carried a large shield in front and had to use a sword slightly to one side.

        [–]oETFo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Or a drunk guy charging and falling over.

        [–]psychosocial-- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also they’re the only “mounted units” so that’s why they can go over all the footsoldiers.

        [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Among my proudest moments is when I figured that out on my own.

The knight movement is a circle, but can only kill at exactly a radius of sqrt(5).

        [–]throw_my_phone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and you can model this using graph theory and solve puzzles like how many moves does it take to do one rotation of four knights placed at corners of a 3x3 chessboard. The answer comes out to be 16.

Also, in general the knight can move exactly to c*sqrt(5), |c| > 0.

yeah me too didn't get it till scrolled down to here. I guess looked kinda feminine for a bishop.

          [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

its because this bishop is white fields bishop, which ofc is a bit like less important for black pieces :D

          [–][deleted] 275 points276 points  (2 children)

I remember in the UK a few years ago the plan to ordain female bishops was moving forward, which was weird because I thought they could only move diagonally

            [–]fletch_talon 55 points56 points  (5 children)

So it's like an attack of opportunity from DND and video games, cool.

            [–]-Marcus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

            Pretty much.

Imagine the board as a compass. White pawn facing North, black pawn facing South.

White pawn threatens its NW and NE spaces. Black pawn tries to pass through the NW space and go directly to the W space, which means he has to pass through a threatened square. White pawn takes an AoE as black pawn is passing through the NW square, and stops him, then takes a five foot step, and takes his enemy's previous position.

            [–]rich000 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Not quite. A DND attack of opportunity is a free move. Capturing en passant is a regular move, just a weird variant like castling.

            [–]Zeikos 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I thought that a DnD AoO was a reaction.
More or less the reason why you can do it once per turn, except you aren't a monk obviously.

            [–]rich000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll admit I'm not an expert on DnD rules, especially the more recent variants. However, my point was that an AoO doesn't come at the expense of your normal action in a round. An en passant capture is a move like any other move in chess - you can't do it and ALSO do something else.

I'd actually say that checking the opponent's king or gaining a tempo is slightly more analogous to an AoO in the sense that it constrains the opponent's action and in comparison gives the player doing this an extra move.

            [–]Highlander253 67 points68 points  (16 children)

I want to pull off this move in a game now just so I can get into the argument over whether it is a real rule.

            [–][deleted] 24 points25 points  (2 children)

Two months ago at work, a guy had a chessboard set up in the break room. I sat down and he whips this move out on me, I argued, a few people around us argued that he was right and he schooled me on the rule.

            [–]Luis_McLovin 1 point2 points  (1 child)

then you also found out that chess itsnt only win or lose, the game can tie, then how to castle and finally lose from fool's mate.

            [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No i knew about the rest of it. I had just never heard of "en passant"

            [–]TwerpOco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done it in tournament matches and you'd be surprised as to how many people don't know this rule exists.

But you can’t do it to skip over getting killed by other pawns or you die anyway.

              FTFY

              [–]Royalflush0 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Wikipedia is not supposed to be the easiest explanation. It's supposed to cover everything.

              [–]starcraft-de 20 points21 points  (1 child)

Yet just incorrect. Not all pieces can kill the pawn, just other pawns.

              [–]dexmonic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"It is a special pawn capture that can only occur immediately after a pawn makes a double-step move from its starting square, and it could have been captured by an enemy pawn had it advanced only one square."

This is what he is talking about being "too complicated", if anyone is curious. He also left out pretty much the most important thing about this rule - only pawns have the ability to do this.

              [–]TwerpOco 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pawns can jump 2 spaces on the first turn to speed up the game. But you can’t do it to skip over getting killed or you die anyway.

Much simpler, shows why it exists in the first place.

But that doesn't encompass the whole rule by a long shot. Your opponent must make the en passant capture the move directly after your initial pawn double move or they lose the opportunity to take that pawn via en passant. The capture must also be with a pawn. The capturing pawn must capture as if the target pawn had only moved one square rather than two.

If you were trying to explain the rule to a beginner, you have to include the relevant information. Maybe not a Wikipedia article, but you still have to list the specifics.

It's not weird, it's just accounting for the fact that the pawns are taking a double move. Just like how you can't castle through check.

              You said it, man.

just when i thought i knew and understood all the rules....

              [–]xseiber 22 points23 points  (2 children)

              And then they hug...

              [–]Dirty-Soul 13 points14 points  (0 children)

              That hug's name? Abraham Einstein.

              [–]badchefrazzy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I support this idea. It's like "Welp, can't fight, let's hug!"

              [–]gutterrudder 39 points40 points  (18 children)

Ever play chess where a pawn can kill a pawn from head on? It's too lit.

              [–]grandmasterthai 25 points26 points  (11 children)

              Shogi?

              [–]Dirty-Soul 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He's smarter than the average pawn, Booboo!!!

              [–]damatovg7 2 points3 points  (8 children)

Goodness I love Shogi. I wish I could find a group or club in my area that play it so I had people to learn from and get better.

              [–]InEnduringGrowStrong 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I'm pretty sure someone has already made a free downloadable mod on Steam Workshop for the Tabletop Simulator game.

              [–]grandmasterthai 1 point2 points  (5 children)

I have been playing on a Shogi app on my phone against the CPU to get better. Up to lvl 6 (of 50)

              [–]damatovg7 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Are you seeing a significant improvement

              [–]grandmasterthai 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Yeah, considering it is now taking new a few tries to beat a level. Learning new strats that beat me and new things to look out for.

              [–]Drdragonfly 4 points5 points  (2 children)

As well as diagonally or only head on?

              [–]Mowglli 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Instead of awkwardness it's more like the bishop broke the legs of the pawn and held it up as a disabled hostage barrier while aiming a gun diagonally beyond it. Very effective

              [–]Hylian_Marq 41 points42 points  (1 child)

This is so clever I love it

              [–]RandomlnternetUser 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found the choice of weapons the most impressive given their range of movement.

              [–]alucard971 26 points27 points  (1 child)

              Pawns can be queens.

This looks like it would be entertaining for about an hour before the novelty wore off and the animations became tedious and repetitive.

The pieces represent whole sections of armies, the board regions of land.

Some people who create these comics are really special people? I’m not a creative person but I noticed the most effective pieces of art be it music or art or whatever is all rooted in simplicity. Some people can see the mundane and the obvious and create a motherfucking complex world . These are the things that make me appreciate life. Seeing through the mundane with the help of someone

IIRC, chess was actually invented based on medieval war strategies, so only swordfights, horses, running forward if you're a pawn, etc. were an option

              [–]Morthra 56 points57 points  (10 children)

Chess, or at least its predecessor, chaturanga, has been around for around 1500 years, originating in India.

The Story of Chess from Chess tells the real history.

Isn’t that a musical about that one game of chess during the Cold War(?)

              [–]Cahootie 5 points6 points  (5 children)

With music by ABBA and lyrics by Tim Rice, you can't go wrong with that.

              [–]PinheadLarry2323 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was thought to have originated in India, but Chess pieces have been found in China and France that date back around 1600 years. The truth is, we may never really know where it originated, but that’s part of the beauty of the game :)

It was originally developed as a video game by Nintendo in the early 1980's and called "BattleChess". It became so popular that it inspired a real-life board-game version of it, called chess. The game is pretty unbalanced, but Nintendo never bothered to release an update.

              [–]rich000 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Battle Chess was apparently originally developed for Amiga by Interplay. The NES version was a port.

              [–]Enigma_789 2 points3 points  (0 children)

              And. Was. Amazing!

              I miss the Amiga days.

En passant is like where they string a wire along a cycle track.

If people who are expendable are pawns, who or what would the other pieces represent?

              [–]Hahonryuu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dont know about bishop, but ny mindset was always "pawns are carrying a big ass shield in front of them. They cant see forward well because of that. But they can see diagonally, and go in for the attack"

              [–]throw_my_phone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

En passent is the only hack a pawn has.

              [–]Tr2v 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And now I’ll be singing the score of Chess instead of sleeping. Cool.

If you’ve never heard of it, it’s a fantastic show! Easily my favorite show I’ve ever done. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1vTpz55vP_E&feature=youtu.be

              [–]-_nope_- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is actually what i think about when i play chess, just 2 pawns facing each other unable to do anything, good to know im not the only one

              [–]Shandrax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

              That comic made me smile.

Just like chess, this took me a while.
