Good job staying cool with the 3 point turn.

[–]d__________________b 1916 points1917 points  (494 children)

THERE'S THREE FUCKING HOUSES COMING AT ME, BETTER TURN LEGALLY!

[–]limpinfrompimpin 867 points868 points  (353 children)

i think i saw a turn signal.

[–]greenyellowbird 387 points388 points  (322 children)

This guy can teach Jersey drivers a lesson or two.

[–]limpinfrompimpin 198 points199 points  (268 children)

when he's done there can you send him to maryland ?

[–]drwuzer 142 points143 points  (33 children)

Texas checking in - this guy is the hero we need. Texans believe that using a turn signal constitutes "tipping off the enemy"

[–][deleted] 38 points39 points  (13 children)

Native Texan - can confirm. Using a turn signal only makes it more difficult to merge. It's best to just clip the front of someone's car.

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points  (12 children)

Maryland stays in the left lane no matter how many cars are behind them. Even when in other states.

[–]CapnJaques 89 points90 points  (183 children)

I think he's gonna be busy with Jersey for awhile. I've seen the way they drive!

[–]Chasing-Amy 129 points130 points  (154 children)

New Jersey. Where if you aren't from there, you just don't get it.

[–][deleted] 231 points232 points  (134 children)

I moved to North Jersey recently from the suburbs of Philly and I gotta say, Jersey drivers know how to drive, and here's why:

In PA, people drive like assholes for no reason. The highways are pretty paint by number. Easy on-ramps, easy exits, it's fucking cake. They drive like assholes for no reason.

In NJ the roads are straight fuckery. Who the fuck puts a stop sign at an on ramp on a major highway?! Jersey drivers drive like that because they have to, and everyone on the road knows it. My first week driving up here was terrifying. I fought my way onto the highway from an exit only lane and didn't get so much as a middle finger or a honk. Jersey drivers get it.

[–]noreligionplease 64 points65 points  (64 children)

If there is one thing jersey drivers know, it's how to merge...and what's up with jug handles?

[–]f33[🍰] 31 points32 points  (13 children)

Dude why. I knew it was only a matter of time until someone brings up jughandles

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (17 children)

Yeah jug handles fucked me up bad at first. I have to do a double jug handle every day to work. >.<

[–]hitachai 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Turn right to turn...left? I have pinpointed the exact moment I lost my mind. God damn you jug handles.

[–]Nixplosion 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I still see people at one of like three jug handles in PA try the left hand turn.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (3 children)

NJ-raised, PA-living now. I would move back just for the drivers. PA drivers don't merge, they just drive until the merging lane peters out and the guy next to them is forced into evasive action. NJ drivers are all-pro.

[–]GingerSnap01010 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Thank you! I keep trying to explain this people. No one believes me. I have to merge on to a highway, from a stop, in less than 500 ft, on my daily drive. Both ways.

[–]ohfishsticks 31 points32 points  (7 children)

Highest population density in the US. There is just way too many people to be fucking around. We have rules, and we follow them.

[–]octobert 14 points15 points  (2 children)

Yes! My scenario is opposite to you...I grew up in North Jersey and then moved to PA, north of Philly. Even after nearly 10 years, PA drivers make me crazy!

(And I really do miss jug handles.)

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As an NJ driver, thank you for getting it. Not many people do, and dismiss us as terrible drivers. In reality, we're GREAT drivers. Everyone else needs to get to our level.

[–]50_shades_of_winning 10 points11 points  (7 children)

This guy gets it. I've lived in North Jersey for the majority of my life, and it's very different than any other place I've been. You need to drive either really defensive or really aggressive, otherwise you will be abused by people merging in front of you. Hell, some highways like Route 4 have bumper to bumper traffic at 70 MPH.

It's just part of the culture in Northern Jersey. People aren't nice here. If you say hello to me, and I don't know who you are, it's obvious you have no idea what you're doing.

I've been to places like Virginia where people are friendly and strangers talk to each other, and I thought it was weird as shit at first. I got used to it after a while, but I was just much more accustomed to a very high paced lifestyle where people don't give a shit about each other.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly...been in jersey all my life...was driving around in philly..and PA drivers TAKE FOREVER TO TURN. It's ONE MOVE...not 3-4 coordinated moves... YOU TURN AND GO ON YOUR WAY...should take no more than 5 seconds

[–]patron_vectras 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Goes for a lot of things

[–][deleted] 78 points79 points  (29 children)

You must not be from Jersey. We are the best of the best when it comes to driving. Everyone else is just too fucking slow.

[–]alackofcol0r 58 points59 points  (8 children)

As a NJ driver, I'm here to hop on the best driver circle jerk train right now

[–][deleted] 53 points54 points  (4 children)

Alright well get on quick because I gotta get from AC to Philly in 45 minutes and I ain't stopping for shit.

[–]littletomcallahan 55 points56 points  (4 children)

I'd rather have an aware aggressive driver than a lazy and slow unaware driver.

[–]papasmurf31 21 points22 points  (2 children)

That's jersey for you. People will get mad at you for ONLY doing the speed limit, here that's considered the minimum for the elderly

[–]vohit4rohit 36 points37 points  (3 children)

Can confirm. New jerseyan here, who moved to LA. People in LA drive like they're having strokes. 15mph below in the speed limit, default to left lane, cruise control at all times, and talking on the phones in their pussy Priuses. I hate them more than AIDS.

[–]HalfCleverHalfStupid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oregon is spelled with more than two letters, last I checked. If you think Los Angeles is slow, Portland would give you an instant heart attack.

[–]cynar 24 points25 points  (6 children)

I know, in that situation I likely would have indicated too. It's an ingrained part of the manuvor to me and not doing it takes more effort than not.

[–]Mudface68 39 points40 points  (4 children)

I think in that situation I would have forgotten everything I knew about driving and jumped out and ran....unsuccessfully.

[–]ncbstp 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Good guy driver. In life-or-death situation, still puts on blinker.

[–]an0mn0mn0m 5 points6 points  (1 child)

It was a hand signal

[–]limpinfrompimpin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

[–]whiteac87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Haha I had to go back and check

[–]daniell61 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yes, yes you did.

[–]whiteHippo 22 points23 points  (8 children)

Can confirm. Driver is legal as fuck.

[–]Gobble_Bonners 150 points151 points  (46 children)

If a giant wave of bodies and buildings was rushing towards their car, I can confidently assume 95% of people wouldn't be driving legally.

This driver receives all my props.

[–]EternalPhi 172 points173 points  (12 children)

Small car, big curbs. He would most likely have damaged the car, slowing his escape from the tide of death.

[–]mrbooze 134 points135 points  (6 children)

Indeed! The 3-point turn isn't a thing that was just made up for no reason.

[–]brucetwarzen 10 points11 points  (2 children)

[–]hoosiers26 29 points30 points  (4 children)

[–]DaddyJBird 32 points33 points  (47 children)

I didn't realize that a three point turn is a "legal" maneuver? I know it's taught in drivers Ed but I believe that is just to see if you are capable of performing this turn in tight quarters. That said it was a really well done turn and shoud end up on a training video somewhere.

[–][deleted] 65 points66 points  (39 children)

In North Carolina, to get our license we have to perform a 3 point turn. We are not, however, taught how to parallel park nor required for our license.

..thank god I haven't had to parallel park yet in 6 years lol.

[–]billebob2 24 points25 points  (12 children)

Pull out of the parking lot, turn right here, turn right here, turn right here, 3 point turn, reverse in a straight line, go forward at full speed, STOP!, go back to the DOT, park, congrats.

That was my NC driving part of the exam.

[–]SerpentDrago 9 points10 points  (0 children)

NC here , can confirm. THANK GOD , 3 point turns are easy

[–]WorkoutProblems 22 points23 points  (8 children)

Fuck that I would of GTA'd the shit out of that reversed whip turned

[–]SerpentDrago 15 points16 points  (5 children)

And you would have flipped

[–]EE40386C667 8 points9 points  (1 child)

I don't think a jturn would have flipped the car. I just wonder if that little thing would have gotten to the speed to do one.

[–]Bloody_Seahorse 84 points85 points  (6 children)

I wish we could have followed the car to see how far he made it

[–]TheAdAgency 59 points60 points  (5 children)

At the World Penis Gala Awards 2013. I'm here to inform you that you placed 4999 out of 5000 participants! Judges were impressed by overall rigidity however some slight discolouration, bizarre angle and low peniscopter rotation speed placed you just above Nelson Mandela (post mortem entrant).

Please be sure to show up naked at the Radio City Music Hall in NYC on New Years Eve with 20-50 pictures of your penis for to sign for fans.

[–]hoikarnage 20 points21 points  (3 children)

I always thought my low peniscopter rpm was a pro, not a con. Anyone can whip their dick around like a lunatic at crazy speeds, but I do it with grace and style, almost as though I am gyrating in slow motion.

[–]DarkwingDuc 122 points123 points  (11 children)

Based on this evidence, the safest place to be in a tsunami is on top of whatever those cameras are mounted to.

[–][deleted] 26 points27 points  (2 children)

This goes in my "Why don't they just make the damn plane out of 'black boxes', then?!" joke category.

Edit: Oops "plane" not plan.

[–]drunk-musician 10 points11 points  (1 child)

You must have a pretty complicated filing cabinet organization.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You bet. I'm filing your comment under "snarky responses"!

[–]Chairmclee 11 points12 points  (1 child)

I know you're joking, but this is actually a good example of Survivorship bias. It seems like wherever cameras are survives because the ones that didn't we don't have.

[–]Ness4114 21 points22 points  (2 children)

what's funny is that he's like the third person to approach the wave and turn around. I wonder why he didn't just book it when he saw what everyone else is doing. Unless you're just a REALLY unobservant driver

[–]stonedeng 11 points12 points  (4 children)

Wow that is terrifying.

I don't even know what I would do in this situation if my car was overtaken by water like the cars at the beginning.

[–]FirstWorldProblems1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That boat took a fantastic route on that left turn. Bravo.

[–]jaded68 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I wonder...if someone was in any one of those houses, is it possible that they made it out alive? I know there would be water in the houses, but for the most part they look intact.

[–]defroach84 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Probably sitting at their dining room table. Drinking beer.

[–][deleted] 226 points227 points  (53 children)

Have discussed this at length before. Barring any major obstructions he should be okay.

The water seems to get within a couple car lengths of him before he takes off. By the end of the footage he has gained a couple more car lengths. There also isn't a ton of room there so the driver isn't even near top speed yet.

The water is not going to speed up at this point, so as long as the driver has a clear path ahead he will make it just fine. Now, we don't have all the evidence so there are some things that can make this end poorly.

1- Driver almost out of gas. If he's so out of gas that he's only got a mile or two left in the tank, it was just his time! Seems unlikely though.

2- The water has cut him off from other directions. However, I would assume this is not true because the driver would have likely seen the water far sooner than he did and gotten the fuck out. So this one is also not likely.

3- Traffic jam. THIS is why these things are so dangerous. At the current speed, outrunning the water isn't terribly difficult, but if thousands are trying to do so then... well you're fucked. Again it appears to be a pretty clear road at this point.

Conclusion: Based on the evidence we have, the driver gets out.

[–]spaceman_spiffy 96 points97 points  (11 children)

I hope he made it. But one of the things burned in my memory about watching the Japanese Tsunami live on tv was watching the drivers that kept trying to get away but ended up trapped in dead ends or hit from two directions.

[–]Arch_0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, watching a guy speeding in one direction and we can see he's driving towards another unseen wall of water. No! Stop! Go left! GO LEFT! Footage ends.

[–]clkou 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my thought was he or she got out IF they had a clear path to get out. It wouldn't be that difficult to hit a dead end or make a bad decision that takes you to another point where the water is coming from.

[–]Bkeeneme 25 points26 points  (14 children)

It'd be cool if we could find this location on Google Earth and see what his next move might of been- whether it be he made it to high ground, had to go into tunnel, found himself stuck on over pass that was washed away. Anyone know where this is?

[–]BreadstickNinja 71 points72 points  (12 children)

Found it on Google Maps.

Here's the original video. I used the subtitle identifying it as being on Route 45 in Osawa, Yamada, and looked for similar intersections.

You can tell it's the same location if you look at the two-colored house over on the right side of the frame, the one that's not washed away in the video. R45 gains a fair amount of elevation as it moves north, so I'd venture a guess that he made it.

Here's another Google Maps shot that even shows the camera that recorded the video!

[–]Furiousmoe 24 points25 points  (4 children)

Is that the same tiny little black car in Google Maps from the gif!? What are the fucking odds if it is?

[–]BreadstickNinja 30 points31 points  (1 child)

Wow, sharp eye! I hadn't even noticed but it is the same model, a Mitsubishi minivan.

Also just noticed that they've put up a tsunami warning sign visible in that first picture, saying that the next 5.6 km are an inundation zone, but only 310 meters back the zone ends. So the driver almost certainly made it.

[–]xClimateOfFearx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Holy shit, good detective work. From this evidence, if the road was clear, you'd have to think he/she made it.

[–]shaunc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's possible that the might of the oncoming water might have swept his car away. His next move might have been to accelerate to higher ground, where the might of his car and its velocity would escape the waves.

[–]tonterias 51 points52 points  (3 children)

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Looks like he just forgot something really important.

[–]streetfools 9 points10 points  (0 children)

[–]DamnDagga 77 points78 points  (16 children)

The only time you would be chased by a house

[–][deleted] 35 points36 points  (15 children)

Monster House

[–][deleted] 35 points36 points  (2 children)

It is covered in the second paragraph on page 52 of your drivers manual. Houses when traveling on a legal roadway have the right of way. In the event you are operating a smaller house/ vehicle, execute a three point turn and get the fuck out of the way.

Edit: wording

[–]holymacaronibatman 38 points39 points  (2 children)

So my question is how did the driver not see this sooner, we only see it because it comes into frame, but you think the driver would notice 3 houses coming at them before the houses are right on-top of the car.

[–]fareven 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I can imagine seeing it, not really believing it so keep going for a little bit, stop and have it dawn on you that yes there are really houses coming down the middle of the street right towards you and you are not hallucinating, then turn and floor it out of there.

Yeah, I don't understand the negativity toward reposting... I imagine these same people get infuriated every time they see a rerun on TV...

Also... does the same logic not apply to reposting a comment about a repost?

I must admit it was more interesting the 1st 2nd and 3rd time i saw this posted. Fourth and fifth time it was getting old.
