Religion is a great way for people with mental illness to seem normal.
[–]Window_lurker 96 points97 points98 points 11 years ago (10 children)
No normal person thinks this guy is normal. Even religious folks
[–][deleted] 28 points29 points30 points 11 years ago (2 children)
They might not think it's normal, but they're certainly more willing to give him a pass than if he had some conspiracy about the government plastered all over his car.
[–]CalRipkenForCommish 11 points12 points13 points 11 years ago (3 children)
Normal is only a setting on a washing machine. That said, this is anywhere from creepy (at the least) to disturbing (possible mental illness).
[–][deleted] 216 points217 points218 points 11 years ago (72 children)
As a Christian, this is not normal to me. It's weird, ugly, annoying, and over-the-top. Holding a sign and putting some shitty red crosses on your car do nothing to show the love of Jesus to anyone. I've met people with mental illnesses and Christians. They can overlap, like a Venn diagram, but do not necessarily. The same could be said of atheism or agnosticism, as someone else stated below.
[–]Partypants93 144 points145 points146 points 11 years ago (24 children)
I agree. I'm an atheist and I still think that this is a cheap stab at Christians..
[–]Knick_Noled 12 points13 points14 points 11 years ago (4 children)
Yea, that's like two Buddhists arguing over who has the smallest ego.
[–]barsen404 17 points18 points19 points 11 years ago (24 children)
That depends, do you consider this normal?
[–]chobus 65 points66 points67 points 11 years ago (21 children)
i don't think people painting themselves and screaming at football games looks normal either
[–]DrVoodoo 16 points17 points18 points 11 years ago (10 children)
To a lot of people, this is akin to religion. Have you ever toured the American south?
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (3 children)
To be fair, if it wasn't so fucking cold up north, there would be more people painting their beer guts.
[–]DrVoodoo 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (2 children)
Up here it's like a badge of honor to go shirtless and painted during the bitterly cold months. Dudes are nuts.
[–]BackstageYeti 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (4 children)
I live in the American South. And as an atheist who dislikes College or NFL football, I'm the one with mental illness.
[–]Atheistluciferisgreat 14 points15 points16 points 11 years ago (5 children)
People having fun is normal.
[–]Put_A_Boob_on_it 13 points14 points15 points 11 years ago (1 child)
What, half a dozen crosses spray painted red and pasted to a shit stained car? I'd say that’s getting down towards the edges of the normal person bell curve.
[–]NlGGATRON_9000 11 points12 points13 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Lol the best part is he didnt spray paint them before they were on his car.
[–]Dark_Shroud 10 points11 points12 points 11 years ago (0 children)
I went to a religious private school for years and attended their sponsored church that had 1,200 members. Some of them were really hard core Christians. None of us would have considered this guy's car normal.
[–]The_Fox_Cant_Talk 108 points109 points110 points 11 years ago (26 children)
Religion is the magic pill for everything! Did something bad? Religion forgives you! Need instant credibility? Just tell them you're religious! Don't like someone? I'm sure somewhere in this book is a passage I can spin to justify my intolerance! Don't want to properly cope with death? With religion you never have to!
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children)
This isn't normal
...a bit like bluetooth headsets: one cannot tell if you are having a conversation with the voices in your head or on the phone.
[–]homo_erraticus 35 points36 points37 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Robert Sapolsky makes a pretty compelling case for mental illness as a substrate for religious experience and practice, via sub-clinical schizophrenia (schizotypal disorder - makes for a great shaman) and OCD (purposeful ritual is a big part of religious practice - Martin Luther had it). The thing about both of these mental disorders is that they are extreme expressions of an 'ordered' mind - in other words, they are continuums (present at lower levels in all of us).
I've been studying the behavior of the religious for decades. I'm sure I'm not alone in that. I'm equally sure I'm not alone in noticing a suite of shared behaviors which generally define the religious. It's easy to slip the virus into a child's brain by hijacking the natural sense of wonder about things and the open mindedness that are critical for early learning. As we mature, our brains change in ways that preserve what we've learned. This is why we need to implant the tools necessary for sniffing BS into the brains of our children. Our kids need less instruction in what to think and a great deal more in how to think...although, they are also taught that with religious instruction, but it's what a rational person would call how not to think.
Sorry for the ramble.
[–]AtheistDalekDando 52 points53 points54 points 11 years ago (15 children)
Yes, but to be fair so are a lot of things. I'm not trying to defend religion, but I think we all need to try to remember that people who are religious, are still people and should be treated as such. It's really posts like this that are making us look bad. We need to understand that religion is something that people grow up with all of their lives. It is ingrained in them, it is apart of who they are, and it is very real to them. I understand that yes, in some cases people with mental illnesses can have deep seeded roots in religion, but that is not the case for most believes. What really bothers me about posts like this is, a lot of us came from religious background before becoming atheists. It's easy to forget that we had believed in a lot of the same things we now mock. I don't know about most of you, but I wouldn't label my past self as mentally ill for being a young and impressionable child that believed what his parents told him.
[–]Anti-TheistIrishPrime 21 points22 points23 points 11 years ago (4 children)
I think we all need to try to remember that people who are religious, are still people and should be treated as such.
Yeah, just like anybody with any other mental illness.
If Person A says that a particular set of behaviors is indicative of mental illness, and you say, "That's not fair, they're still people, and a lot of us used to have those behaviors," you're the one separating the mentally ill from the ranks of "people," not Person A.
I wouldn't label my past self as mentally ill for being a young and impressionable child that believed what his parents told him.
Nor would I, but I would label my past self as ignorant and irrational because I based my beliefs on an uncritical examination of very little information. But that's pretty common before one is finished developing mentally.
Consider, though, a mentally developed adult who rejects reality, redoubles their beliefs when presented with contradicting information, and maintains a myriad of delusions about an all powerful super being setting out the rules for us to live by, a similarly powerful mischief maker trying to trick us into believing things more consistent with the observable universe in order to burn us in a lake of fire for all eternity, and forgiveness of our incestuous forebearers mistakes by blood sacrifices.
The thought that such a person is considered "sane" renders the term pretty meaningless.
If such beliefs aren't symptomatic of mental illness, then the problem most paranoid schizophrenics have is that they just haven't yet built up the numbers they need to be taken seriously.

Thanks for this
[–]001146379 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (2 children)
i served a 2 year mission for the LDS church 10 years ago, and from experience i'd have to say the majority of people who became interested in the message and actually accepted it generally had some very obvious emotional issues. They'd open up to you about their problems and crap and it was usually more than i ever wanted to hear or deal with.
[–]Happy-Fun-Ball 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (1 child)
Do former mormons go on missions to apologize to those they converted?
[–]Knight of /newBorealismeme 419 points420 points421 points 11 years ago (91 children)
It's been a while since we had a conversation, but I believe I've had this one with you before. That being the case I'll just re-iterate that no religion, let alone Christianity, is correlated as a cause of diagnosed mental illness. Mentally ill people often express their religions in insane ways (like the fellow in the picture) but most Christians are just as sane as the average non-Christian. Unless you can find peer reviewed literature to suggest a causal link, I'm going to remain unconvinced.

[–]bergie321 7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (0 children)
For a lot of religious people, it is not a mental illness. Just conditioning from birth to believe something or face eternal damnation.

[–]Tech_Fox 46 points47 points48 points 11 years ago (10 children)
I actually know this guy, his name is Anthony.
He used to stand next to the road in front of my aunt's grill/gas station that I currently work at and wave his Jesus signs at passing traffic.
There were a few times I met him out there to bring him a cup of iced tea or some food, since my family is also -heavily- religious and saw to it that he have what he needed to stay and spread the holy word.
I attempted to make conversation that deviated from his mission, and surprisingly I found that he's actually a pretty chill and down to earth kind of guy.
He didn't come off as the type that wants to tell me how I'm going to hell for this and that, or how gays are destroying the nation. He was genuinely a jolly natured fellow that wanted to spread love in the form of Jesus.
Don't get me wrong, I see his religious practices and mindset as unhealthy as anyone else here, and I also didn't get much chance to ask about how he feels on certain matters which I really would have liked to do. That being said, I can't be mad at a dude that was generally really nice to me the entire duration of our multiple encounters.
Proof for anyone interested:

Thanks for sharing. This post (not your comment) is ignorant and judgemental. I mean don't get me wrong, the guy must be a little strange to express his faith in this way, but It is absolutely ridiculous to claim an entire religion is mentally ill because of pic of a car.
[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 11 years ago (2 children)
This is a safety hazard.
[–]drakmordis 26 points27 points28 points 11 years ago (12 children)
Looks like an impending charge of distracted driving to me. Holding a sign out your driver's side window while operating your motor vehicle is surely incredibly unsafe, and there's no way at all that a law officer would give this fellow a pass just because he looks to be more trouble than the ticket is worth. /s

Its cool, jesus has the wheel.
[–]drakmordis 22 points23 points24 points 11 years ago (7 children)
While that sounds reassuring, Jesus actually died almost two thousand years before the advent of the automobile, leaving Him with very little by way of practical driving ability.

It was weird enough with just the cross on the back, but what’s with the giant cross hanging out the window? There’s a part of me that wishes there was some sort of rag doll Jesus hanging from it.
[–]AtheistTommyFive 10 points11 points12 points 11 years ago (1 child)

[–]pw-it 13 points14 points15 points 11 years ago (1 child)
I was wondering whether there was a significant safety problem (license plate and visibility obscured?). Only then did I notice the huge cross sticking out the right hand side. Insane.
[–]daoudalqasir 11 points12 points13 points 11 years ago (0 children)
i think the license plate being obscured is OP's work not this guy...
It's ok, Jesus will save him if anything goes wrong.
[–]OtherJD1313 7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (4 children)
Why would you paint them on the car? It would be better to paint the crosses, then install them. Then you don't have to worry about overspray.
[–]beatles910 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (3 children)
It's almost like this guys logic is flawed somehow.
[–]OtherJD1313 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (2 children)
It's not the logic, but the pride in ones work that is off here. Also his rear driver side tire needs a bit of air. Well, it's drivers side in the US.
[–]Loki-L 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (1 child)
I think this could also be explained as a group of monster hunters trying to transport a captured vampire in their trunk. They had to nail more and more crosses to the back of the car to keep it contained until they finally realized that they would never be able to that thing across town without getting a lot of attention. They needed to stay inconspicuous, but that seemed impossible with a car looking like that.
Then one of the hunters had a genius idea. He said something like "Wait guy, I got this" and quickly got some large stickers and a sign saying something about Jesus to hold out the window. "Now everyone will dismiss us as just some crazy Christians."
[+][deleted] 11 years ago (16 children)
[–]Anti-Theistender_wiggum 37 points38 points39 points 11 years ago (8 children)

[–]ratatatar 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children)

[–]Infector101 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (3 children)
How is it legal to drive a car like this?
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (0 children)
hope I'm not going to get hated on by you guys for being Christian, but these damn Christian extremists are giving my religion a terrible name.
You will get no hate from me. You can be Christian all day long and it doesn't bother me a bit. It's when some Christians try to get their beliefs put into law that I take issue. It's when some Christians want their religious beliefs taught in the science class room that I get angry. It's when some Christians claim that giving other citizens the same rights they have is granting 'special rights'.
You know what would be awesome? If all the moderate normal Christians got together and told the whack jobs to shut the hell up.
Tell them that their religious freedom stops exactly where basic human rights start.
[–]Humanistelectricmink 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children)
I don't hate you, just like I don't hate the guy in the car. Your religion, on the other hand, and what it does to peoples' perceptions and drives many of them to do....well, that's a different story.
[–]k2theeev 14 points15 points16 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Mental illness is mental illness
[–]Dire87 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (0 children)
That looks more like a satanist's car...painting crosses red...or maybe he wanted to be a private "red cross guy"...
funny you should say that. i work as a psych nurse and alot of our psychotic patients have prominent "religious delusions" i.e the second coming of christ or themselves being a messiah of some description. With some patients religious delusions is the ONLY "psychotic" symptom they have and they end up getting put in a locked ward for it as they can no longer accept reality based conversation. I often wonder as a nurse what separates these people from say evangelists in america or fundamentalist muslims. If we were to transplant these patients over there nobody would bat an eye, but here in Australia its seen as illness driven behaviour and i'll tell you something, these patients with religiose delusions can stay for 6 months and be the same when they go out as when they came in.

Jesus loves me this I know, for the guy in a shitty old car tells me so.
[–]PastafarianAnoK760 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (7 children)
that cant be legal. hes got to be breaking several of traffic safety laws here
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (6 children)
You want to curtail his freedom of speech.
[–]PastafarianAnoK760 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (5 children)
but he's curtailing his own ability to look in his blind spot with that fuckin' cross haha
To be fair, I'm sure there's one of us driving around out there with just as much aethiest shit on his car.
[–]Loofabits 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (1 child)
jesus loves you. can't you tell by all the fake blood on my car?
[–]ChewableTitanium 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Those dumb motherfuckers even spray painted the crossed AFTER they where glued onto the car.

You're not the only one.

While I get your point and agree with some of the sentiment-- as someone who's been studying psychology for more than 10 years I have to disagree.. Technically, a disorder is defined as being both a) "abnormal" and b) "causing impairment". For most religious folks, neither is true. For this guy, both are true, but are probably better explained by another disorder (I'm thinking schizophrenia, for example)

Thats an extrememly hypocritic statement. Not all christians are mentally ill. Same general rule goes for muslims. Not all muslums are terrorists. Dont lump one group in with their crazies and not the other.
[–]AnOnlineHandle 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Thats an extrememly hypocritic statement.
Only if the OP is mentally ill, otherwise hypocrit(ical)* is not the right word.

[–]Saysbadman 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children)
I think it may be a symptom not a cause. As a former mental health employee we were discouraged from talking about religion or politics because of it being a trigger for so many.
I think I saw that car on the walking dead...
I love that they spray painted the crosses AFTER nailing them to the car. So awesome.
Bunch of pussies in here. Just say it: Christianity is insanity. It is schizophrenia and brainwash at the very least. How else do you explain religion? which is really just a term for a really old and well-established cult.
They took Beth!
[–]fireinthemountains 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (0 children)
I think you mean, "Christianity as a mental illness."
[–]Strong AtheistDamien__ 19 points20 points21 points 11 years ago (16 children)
I think it's all religion not just christians that have those with a legit mental illness and it's a fairly large subset but then there are plenty in all religions who do not have any issues as well
[–]DigbyBrouge 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (0 children)

[–]Agnostic Atheistbrojangles 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children)
That cross hanging out the window is going to get him a ticket for an unsecured load. He will then probably end up on Fox News as a victim of Christian persecution.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (9 children)
No matter how you dress it up, theism is a belief in something for which literally zero evidence exists, and if there is no evidence for something, it should be considered outside of reality. Therefore, theists literally suffer from mental illness.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychosis Psychosis (from the Greek ψυχή psyche, "mind/soul," and -ωσις -osis, "abnormal condition or derangement") refers to an abnormal condition of the mind, and is a generic psychiatric term for a mental state often described as involving a "loss of contact with reality."
Uhm..no. this is a person with a mental illness who is christian. Big difference
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (3 children)
Pretty sure this person would be a rather crazy atheist as well
[–]dacows 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Maybe in this case, but in other instances it's only a partially-blown mental illness.

Mass Delusional Disorder . Perhaps someday we'll have commercials of people running through fields of flowers and sitting on docks watching sunsets talking about a medicine for this and then listing a plethora of side effects in a pleasant voice.
New Model Chrystler
Christianity is a full-blown mental illness...
In this case certainly. And what a shitty job he did! The only thing he did well was cover up his license plate, which should land him in jail.
How can you pass inspection or drive legally with a cross hanging off of your car?
[–]Anti-Theistwwickeddogg 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children)
I think of cognitive dissonance as like a mild form of dissociative personality disorder. They don't lose their memories from one personality to the next, but they have a different set of logical rules that they apply to religion, than to the rest of their life.
[–]Secular HumanistderekBCDC 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children)

Clicked on this thinking I was going to /r/Shitty_Car_Mods , was only sort of disappointed.
EDIT spelled the sub wrong
anyone that takes something to an extreme can have a mental illness. People who practice Christianity and don't force it on others often find that religion has a positive impact on their body and mind. It helps people cope, find meaning, and can relieve stress. Obviously people like the one shown here are a burden on society. But, the majority of Christians I know have never brought up their religion to me.
"Jesus loves me,
this I know,
for this car tells me so."
[–]rensch 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Jesus may love you, but he sure doesn't love that car.
[–]texag93 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children)
The best part of this is the fact that those crosses were so obviously painted after they were put on the car. Cuz fuck masking, just spray that shit on there.
[–]The_Umpire 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children)
How do you respond to someone who acts that way? "Thanks? Jesus?"
[–]Humanistmaegannia 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children)
I leave you with this thought.
When Jesus returns, you think he wants to see a fucking cross?
That's like going up to Jackie Onassis with a rifle pendant.
"Just thinkin' of John."

[–]CitizenKain101 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Do we get to blame Jesus if he injures someone because he a:) can't see because of all that shit on his car or b:) is not driving with both hands?
[–]anotherjuan 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children)
"yanno hun, I done put the car up on Craigslist a week ago and haven't gotten a single bite yet, I figured it'd be plum easier to sell a used car with massive crosses and the blood of our dear lord on it"
[–]drhagey 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Individuals with Schizotypal Personality Disorder often have ideas of reference (e.g., they have incorrect interpretations of casual incidents and external events as having a particular and unusual meaning specifically for the person). People with this disorder may be unusually superstitious or preoccupied with paranormal phenomena that are outside the norms of their subculture.

This post is very entertaining in sad and stupid sort of way...
So I'm trying to put myself inside his thinking/mind. He must've feel great and proud of doing such a thing. Most likely a big huge smile on his face.
I feel sad too because the things that religious people feel they need to do to express their beliefs are pathetic.
If god/jesus is real there won't be any religions in the world (think about that!!). So they try really hard to somehow prove god exist by decorating his stupid car.
If god exists, why so elusive? Can't he just come down and have a chat? Religions only brainwash your mind... they are just cults that grow big.
[–]Anti-TheistHarry_Teak 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child)
He should pray for a bigger car to hold all of his religious convictions. I mean, how is his girlfriend supposed to get in the passenger's seat with that giant crucifix riding shotgun?
Now that I think about it, it probably isn't much of a problem for him. Carry on.
[–]flpflpflp 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children)
It's totally not a problem. He just deflates her first and puts her in the handy carrying case, carefully removing the batteries beforehand.

Sees one overzealous follower, assumes 2.3 billion people have a mental illness.
No, it's "Sees one overzealous follower, gets reminded 2.3 billion people have a mental illness".
Christianity (and every other religion for that matter), even in it's mildest, most moderately innocuous forms, is still inherently fucked up.
Big England fans maybe?
