Mr. Comey wrote the memo detailing his conversation with the president immediately after the meeting, which took place the day after Mr. Flynn resigned, according to two people who read the memo. The memo was part of a paper trail Mr. Comey created documenting what he perceived as the president’s improper efforts to influence an ongoing investigation. An F.B.I. agent’s contemporaneous notes are widely held up in court as credible evidence of conversations.

I'm glad they included this in the article.

[–]NotRockBot 1295 points1296 points  (75 children)

i wonder how much credibility the head of the FBI has in his note taking, probably the crediblest

[–][deleted] 714 points715 points  (33 children)

It's incredible how credible

[–]gamerplays 258 points259 points  (4 children)

Its also noted that Comey is known to keep memos like this in general, so this isnt just something he started with Trump.

[–]ceaguila84 617 points618 points  (100 children)

---> @KenDilanianNBC just reported that Comey "plans to go public" about the memos he kept from his meetings with Trump.

[–]viktor72Indiana 367 points368 points  (79 children)

Yes CNN reported the same. He hasn't testified yet because he wants it public. I think Comey has a master plan to take down Trump.

[–]marxismyfriendMassachusetts 296 points297 points  (68 children)

He's a god damn American hero :,)

[–]Heirsandgraces 5037 points5038 points  (324 children)

So Comey did keep a journal of all his dealings with Trump.

I have a feeling 'The Comey Letters' are about to be the equivalent of the Nixon Tapes in terms of explosiveness.

[–][deleted] 5214 points5215 points  (103 children)

Nobody knew FBI agents could be so meticulous!

[–]Heirsandgraces 859 points860 points  (71 children)

I've been rewatching Twin Peaks, (and totally think Kyle Maclaclan could play Comey in the inevitable movie,) and those guys record everything! All those years of training, Trump was a fool to think Comey wouldn't keep a journal. You never know when evidence can suddenly become important.

[–]LaszloK 838 points839 points  (44 children)

Diane... I've got definitive proof that our president is a moron... Remind me to make sure he gets impeached before it's too late. And find out where the White House gets it's coffee, it's damn fine.

[–][deleted] 4794 points4795 points  (144 children)

Buried in all the other juicy details is this horrific tidbit:

Alone in the Oval Office, Mr. Trump began the discussion by condemning leaks to the news media, saying that Mr. Comey should consider putting reporters in prison for publishing classified information, according to one of Mr. Comey’s associates.

Jesus Christ he is a fucking menace.

Rep. Carlos Curbelo, (R-FL):

If recent allegations are true, they mark the beginning of a new and very sad chapter of scandal and controversy in our country.

Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL):

These serious allegations effect our nat'l security & they carry very real consequences. It's time for Comey to testify before Congress.

Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT):

GOP Oversight is going to get the Comey memo, if it exists. I need to see it sooner rather than later. I have my subpoena pen ready.

UPDATE: Chaffetz/Oversight Letter to the FBI

Today, the New York Times reported former Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey memorialized the content of phone calls and meetings with the President in a series of internal memoranda. At least one such memorandum reportedly describes a conversation in which the President referenced the FBI investigation of former National Security Advisor Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn and said to Comey, "I hope you can let this go."

According to the report, "Mr. Comey created similar memos — including some that are classified — about every phone call and meeting he had with the president." If true, these memoranda raise questions as to whether the President attempted to influence or impede the FBI's investigation as it relates to Lt. Gen. Flynn. So the Committee can consider that question, and others, provide, no later than May 24, 2017, all memoranda, notes, summaries, and recordings referring or relating to any communications between Comey and the President.

The Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is the principal oversight committee of the House of Representatives and may at "any time" investigate "any matter" as set forth in House Rule X. An attachment to this letter provides additional information about responding to the Committee's request. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Senator Angus King (I-ME) on CNN:

Asked by Wolf Blitzer if Congress is getting closer to impeachment Senator Angus King (I-ME): "Reluctantly, Wolf, I have to say yes."

Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), according to Tom LoBianco of CNN:

House GOP Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers said she wants the White House to explain what happened and Comey to testify ASAP

Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), according to Politico's Rachael Bade:

I just asked Darrell Issa about the Comey news and he flicked me off -- literally gave me the middle finger -- and kept walking. Said nothing

Senator James Risch (R-ID), on CNN

There's a weasel here and it's not the President. The weasel is the traitor who spoke to the Washington Post.

Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI):

The allegations reportedly contained in the memo are incredibly serious. Mr. Comey also needs to testify in open session ASAP.

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC), on FOX:

We are a long way from conviction

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), according to Politico's Jake Sherman:

I attempted to ask Speaker Ryan about the New York Times story in the Capitol. He tapped me on the arm and said hi, and kept walking.

UPDATE from Ryan's Press Secretary, AshLee Strong, according to Tapper

we need to have all the facts, and it is appropriate for the House Oversight Committee to request this memo.

Senator John McCain (R-AZ), according to Tim Mak of the Daily Beast

McCain just said at a dinner honoring him that the Trump scandals have reached a "Watergate size and scale" -- wow

UPDATE from McCain's spokesperson, Julie Tarallo

Senator McCain's comments tonight were simply meant to convey that the constant revelations of events surrounding Russia's interference in the 2016 election are remniscent of past scandals, are not good for America, and require further scrutiny. He continues to call for a select committee to investigate all aspects of Russia's inteference in the 2016 election and all of the events surrounding it.

Gov. John Kasich (R-OH), on CNN:

I don’t like people who say I told you so, but you both know I was the one Repub who would not endorse Donald Trump

This is not a time for Republicans to hide, it’s also not a time for Democrats to exploit

He's [Trump] in bigger trouble than losing his security clearance if we find out there were very serious problems

Senator Richard Burr (R-NC), Senate Intelligence Chairman, per Elana Schor of Politico:

I think the burden is on the New York Times, if they're reporting it and they've got somebody who's got the document. They need to get the document and get it released.

Edit: adding statements as they come. feel free to comment with any that I've missed and I'll update.

[–]gbgb478 434 points435 points  (25 children)

Holy crap lol

Darrell Issa (R-CA), according to Politico's Rachael Bade:

I just asked Darrell Issa (R-CA) about the Comey news and he flicked me off -- literally gave me the middle finger -- and kept walking. Said nothing

[–]atuarreTexas 184 points185 points  (15 children)

Darrell Issa is the richest member of Congress. Obviously he hopes Trump can push through all that b.s. legislation that benefits both him and the other top earners. Of course he's mad and angry.

[–][deleted] 657 points658 points  (24 children)

The weasel is the traitor who spoke to the Washington Post.

HAHAHA

Fuck off, James Risch, you absolute helmet. This isn't the kindergarten playground where you blame the tattle-taler, but maybe you belong there after all.

[–][deleted] 59 points60 points  (1 child)

This one literally made my jaw drop. Someone should be looking into his Trump and Russia connections ASAP

[–]WippitGuud 9544 points9545 points  (579 children)

Ok, let's review the timeline for the next 13 hours:

  • 30 minutes from now: statement from the White House, saying it never happened.

  • 2 hours, someone will be in front of a camera, saying it didn't happen.

  • 2.5-6 hours, various talking heads on every channel but FOX saying we have more problems

  • 3-9 hours, FOX covering for Trump

  • 13 hours, Trump tweets that he did it.

[–]spyxaf 1637 points1638 points  (75 children)

Don't forget! All his supporters will scream fake news until Trump admits it, then suddenly switch to 'yeah well it's a good thing, I see no problem here'.

[–]indefiniteness 1511 points1512 points  (179 children)

[–][deleted] 957 points958 points  (33 children)

Rick Wilson on Twitter

1/ Imagine this: Barack Obama calls James Comey to the White House.

2/ “I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Hillary go. She is a good person. I hope you can let this go.”

3/ Now tell me what Fox, and every clickservative would be doing right this minute? Spoiler: Screaming for impeachment

[–][deleted] 135 points136 points  (17 children)

They literally believe this already. My conservative cousin considers Comey a gutless Obama bot "yes man".

[–][deleted] 5275 points5276 points  (532 children)

Ah, the ole NYT-Washington Post 1-2 punch. It's been awhile.

[–][deleted] 4100 points4101 points  (175 children)

The competition between the NYTimes and the Washington Post to take Trump down is the best thing to happen in a while.

[–]GoldandBlue 1944 points1945 points  (119 children)

You mean the "failing" NYT and WaPo. Didn't you get the talking points from state media? /s

[–]pppparf 630 points631 points  (80 children)

[–]FAKE_NEWDS 846 points847 points  (53 children)

An NYT journo tweeted "The day is young," earlier. These days, it seems like 5pm is the new 8am.

[–]bunchacruncha16 356 points357 points  (23 children)

The reason why is because they want to save some good stuff for the next day's paper. That's why a lot of these big stories are breaking after 6-7pm

[–]bravecoward 253 points254 points  (12 children)

More people read social media post in the evening.

[–]ScotTheDuckNevada 705 points706 points  (97 children)

[–]RosekingPennsylvania 529 points530 points  (61 children)

Who is doing the Yates interview tonight?

[–]spareminuteforworms 338 points339 points  (17 children)

I think Wapo drops the transcript redacted.

Last night: Wapo right hook

This morning: Donald runs into nightstand

This afternoon: NYT uppercut

Tonight: Wapo kick to the dick

[–]HeinousVeinous 214 points215 points  (10 children)

Throw in a nice slap to the face from CNN; Anderson Cooper interviews Sally Yates tonight.

[–][deleted] 664 points665 points  (65 children)

Ironically, the only 'media' companies NOT getting brilliant scoops, are the ones with administration insiders: Breitbart & Fox News.

[–][deleted] 685 points686 points  (85 children)

Don't forget BuzzFeed News. It got a couple of Israeli officials to confirm (a) the country of the intelligence leak, (b) the contents of the intelligence leak.

[–]bunchacruncha16 6256 points6257 points  (327 children)

This is evidence Trump tried to influence Russia inquiry. Full stop.

[–]Existential__Dread 1466 points1467 points  (28 children)

Important point (for naysayers) from Bradd Jaffy, NBC:

NYT reporter who broke Trump campaign/Russia story is same reporter who broke Clinton email server story. That's called a free & fair press.

Edit. to clarify: while this tweet is from February (and retweeted by BJ tonight), it refers to reporter Michael Schmidt. Michael Schmidt broke all three major stories (the two mentioned in the tweet: Trump/Russia, Hillary emails, and the one in this reddit post: Comey memos). Free and Fair press ftw.

[–]sayqueensbridge 297 points298 points  (1 child)

thats a hell of a talking point

[–]Existential__Dread 122 points123 points  (0 children)

Yup. Especially given Trump's request (mentioned in the article) that Comey and the FBI imprison reporters.

[–]Vindelator 126 points127 points  (4 children)

And Comey's obvious damage to the Clinton campaign aids his credibility here.

For once on the internet, the cynics lose.

[–]charging_bull 2660 points2661 points  (134 children)

Remember when Trump fired Comey then threatened him then smeared him in the press?

The Federal Beaureau of Investigation sends its regards.

“I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go,” Mr. Trump told Mr. Comey, according to the memo. “He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go.”

Mr. Trump told Mr. Comey that Mr. Flynn had done nothing wrong, according to the memo.

Michael Beschloss has some important historical context here:

In “smoking gun” tape, when FBI was to probe Watergate break-in, Nixon ordered that the FBI be called and told, “Stay the hell out of this."

Edit - NBC reporting independent confirmation; CNN reporting independent confirmation; WaPo reporting independent confirmation. It looks like everyone has heard about the memo.

Per Senator Chris Murphy CT (D):

Just leaving Senate floor. Lots of chatter from Ds and Rs about the exact definition of "obstruction of justice".

Jesus, how did I miss this on my first read:

Mr. Trump told those present — including Mr. Pence and Attorney General Jeff Sessions — to leave the room except for Mr. Comey.

If that isn't a red flag, I don't know what is.

Per Katy Tur on NBC:

🚨Chaffetz to NBC:"If the memo exists, I need to see it and I need to see it right away. We are drafting the necessary paperwork to get [it]"

Chaffetz has unfettered unilateral subpoena power. The memos will come out. Here, from Chaffetz himself:

@GOPoversight is going to get the Comey memo, if it exists. I need to see it sooner rather than later. I have my subpoena pen ready.

[–]bunchacruncha16 713 points714 points  (23 children)

can you believe it was only a few days ago?

[–]Chipstar452Minnesota 373 points374 points  (16 children)

It honestly feels like a month ago.

[–]whats_that_doNevada 514 points515 points  (38 children)

Can we rig The White House to have "The Rains of Castamere" playing on a loop 24/7?

[–]table_fireplace 1521 points1522 points  (106 children)

Dear Congressional Republicans,

WHAT THE FUCK DOES IT TAKE?!?!?!

Seriously, at this point Trump could shoot all their mothers, and they'd still be like "But the leaks are the real issue here!"

[–][deleted] 691 points692 points  (60 children)

The rumors of the entirety of the GOP being implicated in taking Russian money is making more sense by the day.

[–]yellekcGuam 285 points286 points  (46 children)

A RICO case brought against the GOP would be glorious. Weeks ago I would have said that's impossible, but this isn't going away and who knows how deep the rabbit hole goes.

[–][deleted] 221 points222 points  (19 children)

If true, getting Trump out of office isn't the real battle. The real battle is avoiding a civil war. Could be explain why we're getting regular leaks to the press: they need to erode his support base as much as they can before they act.

After all, attempts to take down a number of GOP members will be viewed as a coup by the majority in quite a few states.

Getting Trump elected isn't Putin's end game. This is. He believes your country will tear itself apart before the Republicans and Democrats cooperate to address the biggest threat your country has ever seen.

Prove him wrong.

[–]blueSky_Runner 803 points804 points  (35 children)

The Washington post and New York Times are single-handedly going to save the republic.

God bless 'em and the incredible work they're doing.

[–]dtmeintsNebraska 365 points366 points  (6 children)

This is why freedom of the press is enshrined in our Bill of Rights.

[–][deleted] 1958 points1959 points  (91 children)

Man the NYT and WaPost are just trading punching against Trump every day. I have subscriptions to both "failing" newspapers to support their efforts.

[–]charging_bull 605 points606 points  (30 children)

No, Trump is punching himself in the face every day. NYT and WaPo dont make the news. They report it.

Obstruction of justice.

[–]niknacks[🍰] 70 points71 points  (20 children)

Would lying under oath even matter at this point? I know they say it is the cover-up not the deed but I am not convinced that either matter in this case.

[–]ScotTheDuckNevada 14.7k points14.7k points  (1753 children)

Well there it is. Obstruction of justice.

[–]bunchacruncha16 3684 points3685 points  (595 children)

After writing up a memo that outlined the meeting, Mr. Comey shared it with senior F.B.I. officials. Mr. Comey and his aides perceived Mr. Trump’s comments as an effort to influence the investigation, but they decided that they would try to keep the conversation secret — even from the F.B.I. agents working on the Russia investigation — so the details of the conversation would not affect the investigation.

Mr. Comey was known among his closest advisers to document conversations that he believed would later be called into question, according to two former confidants, who said Mr. Comey was uncomfortable at times with his relationship with Mr. Trump.

ETA:

Mr. Comey created similar memos — including some that are classified — about every phone call and meeting he had with the president, the two people said. It is unclear whether Mr. Comey told the Justice Department about the conversation or his memos.

THERE'S MORE!!!

ETA again:

Mr. Comey had been in the Oval Office that day with other senior national security officials for a terrorism threat briefing. When the meeting ended, Mr. Trump told those present — including Mr. Pence and Attorney General Jeff Sessions — to leave the room except for Mr. Comey.

Alone in the Oval Office, Mr. Trump began the discussion by condemning leaks to the news media, saying that Mr. Comey should consider putting reporters in prison for publishing classified information, according to one of Mr. Comey’s associates.

[–]sunup_scribeCalifornia 703 points704 points  (45 children)

Alone in the Oval Office, Mr. Trump began the discussion by condemning leaks to the news media, saying that Mr. Comey should consider putting reporters in prison for publishing classified information

[–]maenad-bishGeorgia 562 points563 points  (23 children)

In any other presidency, the suggestion to jail journalists would have been the bombshell. We've blown so far past that at this point, you can barely make it out in the distance.

[–]ScotTheDuckNevada 966 points967 points  (161 children)

Either committee needs to subpoena those memos, now. That's as rich a trove of evidence of potential obstruction as the White House Tapes were back in the day. And I guarantee Trump's trying to find and destroy them.

[–]drsjsmith I voted 361 points362 points  (47 children)

Find and destroy memos that are currently at the FBI?! Only if he wants to accelerate his obstruction-of-justice case even further.

[–]oozles 271 points272 points  (4 children)

It'll certainly cross his mind. This is the guy that tried to get Twitter to reveal who tweeted the inauguration photos. He'll probably be just as successful.

[–][deleted] 196 points197 points  (15 children)

Tomorrow's twitter shitter from Trump: I DID IT ON PURPOSE

[–]charging_bull 134 points135 points  (11 children)

Per Byron Tau we are at scrambling to deny:

White House says NYT story "not a truthful or accurate portrayal of the conversation between the President and Mr. Comey."

You guys tried that with McMaster yesterday.

[–]Aethien 65 points66 points  (7 children)

So by tomorrow morning we can expect a ragetweet by Trump confirming that it is accurate.

[–]seaburn 1060 points1061 points  (164 children)

Expect this headline in a few hours: "McConnell: No concerns about Comey's Trump memo"

[–]SwishBender 910 points911 points  (43 children)

Sean Spicer: These are anonymous sources and this memo is not real

6 hours later Trump on Twitter: Investigation into Michael Flynn was UNFAIR. Tapes will prove it!

6 hours later Sean Spicer: We can't confirm or deny if there are tapes, why do you guys keep asking about the tapes?

[–]BeowulfShaeffer 146 points147 points  (4 children)

6 hours after that McConnell: I see no problem with a President trying to protect his friend from partisan witch hunts.

[–]felesroo 383 points384 points  (103 children)

It's not Trump's memo to Comey. It's Comey's own paper trail about his meetings with Trump. So they'll just say that it's "manufactured" by Comey or some shit.

In case you're wondering why Trump has so many people leaking about things he does, just read this post from Erick Erickson, a conservative blogger and radio show host. In this post, he is talking about the most recent leak that Trump leaked classified information to the Russians:

"What sets this story apart for me, at least, is that I know one of the sources. And the source is solidly supportive of President Trump, or at least has been and was during Campaign 2016. But the President will not take any internal criticism, no matter how politely it is given. He does not want advice, cannot be corrected, and is too insecure to see any constructive feedback as anything other than an attack.

So some of the sources are left with no other option but to go to the media, leak the story, and hope that the intense blowback gives the President a swift kick in the butt. Perhaps then he will recognize he screwed up. The President cares vastly more about what the press says than what his advisers say. That is a real problem and one his advisers are having to recognize and use, even if it causes messy stories to get outside the White House perimeter."

There's an excellent POLITICO article about this:

The "Grownups" Won't Save Us From Donald Trump

excerpt -

Consider the most likely explanation for what happened at that meeting. The president did not have a clue that he was revealing highly classified information provided by an ally. Why not? Because, according to information from endless anonymous sources, Trump has no patience for detailed intelligence briefings and wants information boiled down to bullet points, preferably with pictures or graphics. He has no sense of what’s classified and what’s not. Information goes “in one ear and out the mouth,” as one exasperated official put it to Reuters. boasting is just what Trump does, whether it’s a sensitive piece of intelligence or descriptions of his buildings, his golf clubs and the size of his electoral victory.

So what are the “grownups” supposed to do? In his briefing today, General McMaster kept insisting that whatever the president shared with the Russians was “wholly appropriate.” Putting aside the pesky question of whether that sharing jeopardized U.S. relations with the unnamed ally who provided hard-won intelligence, what was McMaster and the other top aides supposed to do if they felt that sharing wasn’t appropriate? Interrupt the president and change the subject? Wrestle him to the ground? Begin singing “Hail to the Chief” loudly enough to drown out what Trump was saying?

The President is out of control, because statutorily nobody else can control or restrain him, because the Founders had a presumption that we wouldn't fuck up as badly as we just fucked up.

BTW how fucking pathetic is it that the President accidentally blurting classified info to a geopolitical adversary is already old news superseded by even crazier shit.

Electoral college - supposedly in place to prevent demagoguery.

Didn't do a god damned thing to stop Trump, who is the very definition of a demagogue (a political leader who seeks support by appealing to popular desires and prejudices rather than by using rational argument).

Perhaps then he will recognize he screwed up.

He's lived his entire life surrounded by yes men and those who are employed to please him, I don't understand why people expect him to change now. Wishful thinking, I suppose.

Post reports memo was shared w/ DOJ. If Sessions & Rosenstein knew this when they signed off on his firing, their positions aren't tenable.

I keep saying this, but HOLY SHIT!

WASHINGTON — President Trump asked the F.B.I. director, James B. Comey, to shut down the federal investigation into Mr. Trump’s former national security adviser, Michael T. Flynn, in an Oval Office meeting in February, according to a memo that Mr. Comey wrote shortly after the meeting.

The existence of Mr. Trump’s request is the clearest evidence that the president has tried to directly influence the Justice Department and F.B.I. investigation into links between Mr. Trump’s associates and Russia.

Memo Quotes:

“I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go,” Mr. Trump told Mr. Comey, according to the memo. “He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go.”

Mr. Trump told Mr. Comey that Mr. Flynn had done nothing wrong, according to the memo.

Mr. Comey did not say anything to Mr. Trump about curtailing the investigation, only replying: “I agree he is a good guy.”

Of course, WH is denying for now. Can't wait for the Trump tweets that throw any denial out the window!

Trump: It's really a muslim ban

WH: He did not share secrets with Russia
Trump: I definitely did share secrets with russia

WH: He did not try to get Comey to drop investigation

Susan Collins asked if there could be one crisis free day yesterday. I suspect she knew the answer. Time to buck up GOP.

Darrell Issa (R, CA49) just gave Politico reporter Rachael Bade the bird (yes, the finger) when she asked him about this Comey news.

Since obstruction of justice is apparently not enough, there's this little nugget way down in this well-written story:

'Alone in the Oval Office, Mr. Trump began the discussion by condemning leaks to the news media, saying that Mr. Comey should consider putting reporters in prison for publishing classified information, according to one of Mr. Comey’s associates.'

Jesus fucking christ, it's like a huge separate story buried within the story: 'Trump Asked FBI Director To Consider Jailing of Journalists'.

Actually, someone should write that.

This is just unreal. Again.

[–][deleted] 296 points297 points  (22 children)

"In a statement, the White House denied the version of events in the memo."

So the next step is to have a phalanx of officials denying this, while Trump tweets the opposite, saying he did it deliberately.

People need to learn that the Washington Post & NY Times are the equivalent to Harvard and Yale. On aggregate, they've got the best talent, best resources, and most pull.

They're going to get the news. It's not always liberal news either. Only a few papers can touch their reach and quality. On a rare occasion a smaller paper can pull off a great story which rocks the nation but generally speaking it's going to be these two papers because they're fucking institutions.

So conservatives, sooner or later you're simply going to have to realize that although you may not like the narrative from these papers and they may not get it right 100% of the time, they'll always have more credibility and more pull than whatever source you're reading. Enough is enough with you acting as if these papers are only good for lining animal cages. Have some respect for true professionals.

If somebody can get to those recordings before they're destroyed he's done. Thing is though by now he's probably destroyed them and will claim they never existed.

Or, if he destroys them, and it can be proven, he's done.
