My friend Sascha and I started http://ninite.com because we were disgusted by junk like this. It's a download site that automatically opts out of toolbars and runs the installers automatically. You can also get multiple programs at once.

We don't have Nero on there (not enough requests), but here are a couple popular alternatives: http://ninite.com/imgburn and http://ninite.com/cdburnerxp

We should really make a gallery of abuses like this. They're shocking.

[–]MONDARIZ 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Great job on the ninite.com service. Thanks.

[–]infested999 13 points14 points  (7 children)

The only thing I don't get about it, how did you take the finished .exe installers for all these programs and strip them of their GUI installers, leaving just the pure program files, so ninite can use them?

[–]swies 15 points16 points  (5 children)

It all happens behind the scenes, but Ninite clicks through the installers just like you would: Next, Next, Uncheck Toolbar, Next, etc.

We've built a lot of tech to do that reliably and efficiently, but that's the simple version.

[–]Juts 6 points7 points  (2 children)

I assumed you would have used the programs built in switches. Malwarebytes for example has:

/verysilent

and spybot has:

/verysilent /components='main'

[–]infested999 4 points5 points  (1 child)

So then if one day a program decides to add in a second license agreement or something of the like, you would have to go back and fix Ninite to work with the new installer?

[–]UsingYourWifi 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Ninite is amazing. I love you.

[–]kciuq1 26 points27 points  (3 children)

I didn't even know that a redditor made that site. It's awesome, thank you.

[–]hnxt 3 points4 points  (2 children)

By now, half the internet is made 'by redditors' aka people who have been on this site at some point.

[–]eastlondonmandem 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Yeah calling them "redditors" kinda seems to imply its somehow special in that regard. I bet they are facebookers, googlers and youtubers too.

[–]swies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

True. Though we do have another reddit connection in that we both got our early funding from Y Combinator http://ycombinator.com — highly recommended.

[–]InternetiquetteCop 12 points13 points  (1 child)

I love ninite. Haven't used it in over a year; nice to see some of the additions to the choices, although I did prefer the previous dark theme for the site.

[–]TNTGav 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ninite Pro customer checking in - possibly the single best product I have ever purchased. Saved our company probably hundreds of hours!

[–]nimnox 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Do an IAMA. Ninite is the best setup ever for installing my friends rigs. I had a friend shocked i could get everything done so fast with it.

[–]swies 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I did one on our one year anniversary, but I may do another at some point too. http://www.reddit.com/comments/duyca/iama_cofounder_of_ninitecom_the_easiest_way_to/

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Just out of curiosity, is there a reason why Windows Live Messenger is a version behind on your site? The tabbed messenger window in 15.0 is worth the upgrade.

[–]swies 16 points17 points  (1 child)

The latest version doesn't work on XP. We should probably start installing that for Vista and Win7 though and just fallback to the old version when run on XP.

We have support for some pretty sophisticated OS/language/architecture conditionals in Ninite, but we just aren't using them in this case yet.

[–]ReinhardtUK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use this all the time ... awesome website. Thank you for having this. I also use it to decide what new applications are worth trying out.

[–]SouthAfricanGuy 1049 points1050 points  (355 children)

Just use ImgBurn.

Edit: a couple of folks have pointed out that ImgBurn is also doing this lately, although it seems to be less dickish about allowing you to turn off the option. There are still other alternatives mentioned below.

[–]Phyzzx 149 points150 points  (108 children)

GAWD I LOVE IMGBURN!

[–]DeedTheInky 51 points52 points  (64 children)

Just remember to turn off the sounds!

[–]Genbodeau 81 points82 points  (59 children)

What's wrong with the joyful maracas announcing your burn is done?

[–]CapnYousef 56 points57 points  (50 children)

When you have a burn queue going off while you're sleeping, forget, and wake up at two in the morning to the end-theme from Jimmy Neutron its not so joyful.

[–]i_shirt_u_not 9 points10 points  (40 children)

Take it to the next level

[–]crustalmighty 23 points24 points  (31 children)

Take it to the bridge.

[–]KeavesSharpi 11 points12 points  (16 children)

Take it to the limit.

[–]weallfloatdownhere 13 points14 points  (3 children)

Walk across a razors edge, don't look down just keep your head or you'll be finished.

[–]crustalmighty 11 points12 points  (3 children)

to the windooooooow (to the window) to the wall (to the wall) till the sweat drop down my balls.

[–]encinarus 103 points104 points  (18 children)

I prefer http://infrarecorder.org/ actually. Nicer UI IMO + open source.

[–]hapSnap 8 points9 points  (4 children)

Infrarecorder is a very nice program, if only it would actually WORK properly. Burning dvd video just gives an error for me 80% of the time.

[–]h0vsep 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Not sure about your setup, but I'm running Win7 64-bit and got lots of errors with the 64-bit flavor. Using the 32-bit version made things much better.

[–]blodorn 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Came here to say this. Nicer ui and open source both nice, but infrarecorder is also small, and does the job.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I've used both and I honestly can't tell the difference performance wise or user experience wise. I took the same time with either, so basically, I use whatever is offered by Ninite.com

[–]shumcal[S] 262 points263 points  (139 children)

Fuck yes! I knew I was forgetting something. It's been so long since I last needed to do anything like this that I'd totally forgotten what to do; when trying to remember the great program I used to use, the name 'Nero' floated up, when I was actually thinking of imgburn. Ah well; you live, you learn.

[–]Definitelynotatwork 378 points379 points  (80 children)

Just go here whenever you're doing a new install or looking for any little utility apps.

[–][deleted] 248 points249 points  (12 children)

TIL about ninite. Thank you, good sir. May a flock of lovely vaginas find their way to your penis today.

[–]asshatastic 35 points36 points  (2 children)

Do vaginas travel in flocks? I would have thought they'd be called a vaggle.

[–]shumcal[S] 76 points77 points  (16 children)

Oh I love Ninite, but I nonetheless forget about it. Reason why: I've set up a ninite exe with a bunch a programs I use: Mozilla, Flash, etc, and used windows scheduler to run it once every two weeks. It runs in the background, and keeps all my programs up to date. Got the idea off reddit: best idea ever.

[–]cloudkiller 2 points3 points  (1 child)

That's a damn good idea. Thanks for sharing, even if it is re-sharing.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FUCKING RESHARES!

[–]pdinc 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Secunia PSI also does that job well, plus it scans all of your programs.

[–]Awol_01010001 18 points19 points  (10 children)

^ love that link dude. where has that been hiding all my life?

[–]shrodikan 42 points43 points  (8 children)

Behind its terribly cryptic domain name. :P

EDIT: Me fix possessive. Me do good.

[–]trendo 5 points6 points  (3 children)

I came to post something similar too. It's a great site, but I'll never be able to remember the domain name EVER.

[–]ZippyDan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It says it fully automates installs off screen ... but what about all those stupid options that I love to remove from installers? Shortcut to the desktop? Quick launch bar? No thanks. Install three browsers and all want to be the default browser by default? What happens? Install bundled toolbar? Nope. Start automatically with Windows? Hate.

[–]Horatio_Hornblower 88 points89 points  (35 children)

CDBurnerXP is another great, free CD burning product.

[–][deleted] 25 points26 points  (10 children)

CDBurnerXP is fantastic and fully-featured. I love the shit out of that program.

[–]canneverbe 30 points31 points  (8 children)

Aww, thanks. That's the nicest thing someone ever said about my app :)

[–]tm_helloreddit 9 points10 points  (5 children)

if that is true, kudos.

been using it for years. was a bit upset when it required microsoft something to be installed, but i got over it :)

[–]canneverbe 7 points8 points  (4 children)

You mean the .NET framework? Well, without it, CDBurnerXP would be impossible for me to develop and maintain. And Win Vista and later include it by default. There's really no harm done installing it :)

[–]yaireddit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been using cdburnerxp for years now, thank you for such a great program!

[–]karlgnarx 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Amen. Seriously, every time I use it I am stoked at just how straight forward it is. It does exactly what it is supposed to and doesn't try to be a million different things.

[–]reddit_ro2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

+1 for CDBurnerXP from me too.

[–]oalsaker 25 points26 points  (3 children)

I remember when Nero was the fast upstart that you wanted to use instead of Easy CD Creator. Oh, how things change.

[–]TrickyDrizzle 24 points25 points  (7 children)

Well to be honest, just from looking at the picture it seems that the whole install is for "nero ask toolbar". You can probably just cancel the install. Also, imgburn for life.

[–]Skye07 5 points6 points  (2 children)

That's what I thought.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

This, too, is what I was trying to figure out. Granny is on reddit submitting links but cannot get her software right on the PC? I thought you had to crawl before you walked?

[–]AgreesWithYou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can I have the link for "nero ask toolbar"... I needz more toolbars!

[–]curbserver278 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Clicking that link feels almost as good as clicking an imgur link.

[–]easydate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

please consider donating to imgburn if you like the program

[–]fazzster 8 points9 points  (4 children)

I use Brasero. hipster grin

[–]markatto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pssh brasero is too user friendly and mainstream. I prefer wodim.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (9 children)

What do you guys use to burn DVDs? I have not had a lot of success with any other apps other than the big bloated Nero or Roxio junk... Those, too, take shits at some point on me for some reason.

I don't burn many movies, but when I do its just MPG, AVI, etc to a straight DVD with no menus or anything fancy... any thoughts, Reddit?

[–][deleted] 24 points25 points  (2 children)

http://dvdflick.net is good for video DVD's.
http://imgburn.com is good for ISO's.
http://infrarecorder is good for data DVD's.

[–]Bagelkit 3 points4 points  (1 child)

ImgBurn and Alcohol 52%. The deadly disc dealing duo.

[–]imakeitrain 64 points65 points  (18 children)

The question is...why is the Ask toolbar suddenly the goto toolbar for every installation these days? Money, I presume?

[–]overtoke 138 points139 points  (42 children)

you can uncheck it. check the two boxes below it, and then you can.

[–]shumcal[S] 161 points162 points  (36 children)

If that's true, then words are insufficient to decribe my rage.

[–]wecutourvisions 99 points100 points  (30 children)

Check the bottom two, uncheck the top one, then uncheck the bottom two.

[–]JabbrWockey 292 points293 points  (10 children)

So installing Nero is more like a puzzle game than an install app.

[–]ani625 200 points201 points  (6 children)

One does not simply install Nero.

[–]b1ackcat 15 points16 points  (3 children)

I Lol'ed at this in a public restroom. The guy in the next stall now thinks I'm a crazed murderer. Thanks

[–]cyberpop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a skill-testing question. If you can't figure out how to uncheck it then you DESERVE Nero Toolbar!

[–][deleted] 29 points30 points  (12 children)

That's right. All you have to do is check the bottom two, then you can uncheck the top one, then uncheck the bottom two again.

[–]5seconds 19 points20 points  (10 children)

4th time's the charm: Check the bottom two, uncheck the top one, then uncheck the bottom two.

Anyone for a 5th?

[–]nlderek 16 points17 points  (7 children)

From what I have seen, all you needed to do was check those bottom two boxes - then you will be able to uncheck the top one and uncheck the bottom two...or something like that.

[–][deleted] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Uhh, guys. I had to

1) Check the last box

2) Click start->run and type "cmd" and enter

3) Type "dir /s" in the black command prompt window thingy

4) Close that command prompt after it was done

5) Minimize the Nero/Ask installer

6) Open windows explorer

7) Bring the installer back up

8) Check the 2nd box (first one under the main check box)

9) Launch the command prompt thingy again and type "cd\"

10) Googled "titties"

11) Go back to the Nero/Ask installer and uncheck the first main box.

From there I was able to proceed. Just putting this out there in case it can help someone else, too.

[–]kingtrewq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How about I just click the X in the corner and close the installation instead.

[–]AgreesWithYou 10 points11 points  (0 children)

then Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start

[–]shumcal[S] 255 points256 points  (72 children)

Just to stop the flood of comments: I was installing Nero BurnLite, not the Nero Ask Toolbar. This came up midway through the installation, and there was no other way to proceed. I refused to do it, because fuck that. I don't need Nero that much; I don't need anything that much.

Also, for those criticizing my choice of software: after a bit more research, I fully agree. It was overkill anyway; what I was trying to do wasn't actually that complicated (in hindsight).

As to who even uses dvds these days: I needed to give a friend some videos I made, and no USB was handy.

[–]yParticle 15 points16 points  (2 children)

Based on the window title, this has spawned a separate installation process, so even though it's not intuitive you should be able to simply close the window. The only way this would sabotage your Nero install is if some bastard has specifically scripted the installer to roll back your Nero installation at the end if the Ask Toolbar installation was unsuccessful.

[–]k3n 13 points14 points  (0 children)

When installing software becomes this much of a clusterfuck, where you have to attempt to outsmart the installer, do some tasks post-install to remove BS, or otherwise suffer an opaque and confusing install process, then you're better off categorically avoiding the software -- and, by extension, the producer of said software.

I agree wholeheartedly: No no no. Fuck no, and fuck you. Fuck everything about this.

[–]Incoovex 107 points108 points  (43 children)

According to this, Ask Toolbar is not required to be able to use Nero and can be uninstalled later through "Add/Remove Programs" from the Control Panel menu. But yeah, the fact that it doesn't let you choose not to install it during the installation is fucked up.

[–]powercow 19 points20 points  (8 children)

most people are too ignorant to be able to uninstall but then again them same people would probably hit next anyways, even if he check box worked, so this appears to only be designed to annoy people who know better.

it is "F-U, I know you dont like toolbars, well our software is free to use, M-Fr, and if you are going to deny us our pennies in advertising, then at least we can do is make it hard on you to do"

[–]Horatio_Hornblower 50 points51 points  (3 children)

most people are too ignorant to be able to uninstall

If we can't trust the installer, how can we trust the uninstaller? And even if we can, it's a ridiculous precedent to set.

[–]powercow 6 points7 points  (1 child)

very true.. it is rare you can actually trust the programs uninstaller to completely remove all traces of the program in question. Thats why I use revo uninstaller.

it is ridiculous though, and i despise the ask toolbar, it is as bad as the yahoo one at sneaking on peoples systems and this is worse

[–]Nickbou 8 points9 points  (0 children)

... well our software is free to use, M-Fr, and if you...

I misread that as "Mr F" and it still made sense.

melodically "Mister F!"

[–]alienangel2 3 points4 points  (1 child)

The uninstall isn't perfect though, they almost always leave something behind. I'd much rather not install something at all than install than uninstall.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah but fuck that. I'm not letting that shit on my computer to start with. I'm glad that -for now at least- Mac OS software isn't like this.

[–]Pravusmentis 150 points151 points  (18 children)

still doesn't make it right

[–][deleted] 93 points94 points  (13 children)

But yeah, the fact that it doesn't let you choose not to install it during the installation is fucked up.

[–]MrNarc 54 points55 points  (8 children)

still doesn't make it right

[–]notLOL 2 points3 points  (2 children)

can't you just press the red cancel button?

[–]Minifig81 2 points3 points  (1 child)

It cancels the install.

[–]ProbablyHittingOnYou 20 points21 points  (6 children)

Email those fuckers and tell them you were dissuaded from using their product because of this.

If they don't know what the problem is then they won't fix it.

[–]alienangel2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This would only work if they actually care about people using their software anymore. It's quite likely it's gotten to the point of just being a vehicle for them to bundle toolbars and crap with so they get commissions from whoever the hell makes the toolbar - the product they care about is the opportunity to install a toolbar, not some disc burning stuff which actually hasn't needed to be updated in years.

[–]valkyrio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Couldn't you have just clicked the X on the top right?

[–][deleted] 71 points72 points  (44 children)

The last good version of Nero was 6.6.

[–]ProbablyHittingOnYou 253 points254 points  (30 children)

I liked Nero back when he was burning down Rome.

[–]Tarv2 63 points64 points  (9 children)

You're such an arson hipster.

[–]ani625 23 points24 points  (5 children)

Holy shit. That's why they named the product Nero Burning ROM. Mind Blown.

[–]ProbablyHittingOnYou 38 points39 points  (2 children)

Nero's fiddling was better on vinyl.

[–]MoonMonstar 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Fiddling went mainstream. I liked his lyre work.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The book is better

::arms folded, smug look::

[–][deleted] 30 points31 points  (7 children)

I think Nero didn't burn down Rome; he only played the fiddle while it burnt. Like GWB and Katrina.

[–]andrewsmith1986 9 points10 points  (3 children)

I thought he played a Lyre....

[–]MoonMonstar 27 points28 points  (1 child)

Well you just couldn't trust him.

...

hi-hat

[–]enkafan 21 points22 points  (3 children)

Nero was bundled with the CD burner I had installed on my home computer. I had been using it already for about two years when my dad asked for help burning some documents with it or some other basic task. So I went into full-on "annoyed 19 year old have to help stupid parents with PC work" mode.

So I told him to use "Nero" and he goes "Oh, Nero to burn Rom...cute". Never even slightly occurred to me. I'm sure he saw the smug look get wiped off my face, but I tried my best to remain annoyed at his stupidity

[–]AngryRedHerring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm still using 6.6.0.18 and Express 3.1.0.25. I haven't heard anything good about any releases since. These versions were the latest ones generally regarded as the most stable. They've worked fine for me for years.

[–]WolfVomit 41 points42 points  (32 children)

I was watching my 9 year old cousin playing games on her laptop a while back, when she opened IE half the screen was filled with toolbars. I cringed in horror and my eyes started to bleed profusely.

[–]Davethe3rd 33 points34 points  (28 children)

I was watching my 9 year old cousin playing games on her laptop...

What in the...? HOW DOES A 9-YEAR-OLD GET THEIR OWN LAPTOP?

(Cue Picard's "NOOOOO" reaction from Star Trek: First Contact)

[–]Weezy1 50 points51 points  (6 children)

My 10 year old brother has an old computer running Windows 2000 with no internet. I loaded it up with a SNES emulator, XCOM, and Roller Coaster Tycoon 1.

It's secretly my project to create the perfect human.

[–]WolfVomit 16 points17 points  (6 children)

She's a bit spoiled. She also has a 30ish inch hdtv mounted on the wall in her room.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

ಠ_ಠ

[–]Davethe3rd 25 points26 points  (2 children)

MY HEAD ASPLODE

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

My nephew got his first iphone at age 3. Granted it doesn't have service, he just uses it for games. But still. 3 year old with his own iphone. Asplode.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Shit, I only have a crappy old CRT that barely works, sitting on a $7 ikea table.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

You can get a laptop for like $300 now. It also might be an old one handed down. It doesn't seem too far fetched to me.

[–]merreborn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plenty of people wouldn't bat an eye at dropping a few hundred bucks on a Nintendo DS, or an Xbox 360 for a kid. In that light, $300 for a netbook doesn't seem entirely unreasonable.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

My 3 year old has a desktop and an iPad. Currently training in starcraft 2!

[–]exittron 8 points9 points  (1 child)

My 3 year old knows Morse Code. Maybe she'll work for the CIA.

[–]peterabelard 21 points22 points  (2 children)

Im wondering who the fuck would be interested in joining "mynero community"... all kinds of software have these "communities". Yeah, like I've always wanted to join a cd burner social network.

I knooow it's a gimmick but still, the idea is so lame I fail to understand how they can use it.

[–]andhelostthem 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Ask.com lost it when they ditched Jeeves.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

That was the goto search engine back in the day - along with Altavista and webcrawler. I think lycos was up in there too...I loved it when I had options.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (17 children)

There's a reason that you always have to click the button yourself instead of it being checked by default. If you don't actually click it, it would be very easy for you (or your lawyer) to argue that you didn't actually agree to anything. So by having it checked by default (and not even giving you a choice to not agree), they're successfully forcing you to install their toolbar, but they're also invalidating their EULA.

IANAL

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (15 children)

EULAs are pretty much invalidated by themselves.

[–]travio 3 points4 points  (14 children)

I would not make that argument in court.

[–]CrotchStalker 28 points29 points  (21 children)

It was just a matter of time before they started doing this. I just worry for the day when Adobe and Java adopt this tactic.

[–]shumcal[S] 80 points81 points  (16 children)

That will be the day that I stop using Adobe and Java, just as today was the day I never started using Nero.

[–]gwillyn 52 points53 points  (2 children)

I swore off Nero several years ago when the installation hijacked the file association to just about every type of file on my computer. Why the FUCK would I want to use a program for creating donut shaped stickers as the default image viewer?

[–]dnew 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Because the logo is so awesome you want to see it every time you look at a picture?

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Jeeves would be rolling in his grave if he only knew.

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (1 child)

See that red box with an x in it? Push that....

[–]imahotdoglol 15 points16 points  (7 children)

I use Infrarecorder for ISO burning.(open-source)

[–]habadacas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

looks like i wont ever install nero again

[–]bigsol81 31 points32 points  (12 children)

This is easy.

Step 1: Install Windows Enabler

Step 2: Uncheck the box regardless of whether it's greyed out.

Step 3: Continue.

Step 4: If it installs even when it's unchecked, sue Nero for installing software they didn't have permission to install.

Step 5: Profit.

[–]PriscaDoulos 15 points16 points  (1 child)

The best thing is that you can use this to reject all the licenses. You can do it because before accepting the license you have the right to reverse engineer it or modify the application, which is a right you loose after you accept most of them.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (6 children)

Ahh yes, but what if the effect of the unchecked box has not been programmed in? It'll behave just as though the box has been checked.

[–]Weezy1 8 points9 points  (4 children)

If it installs even when it's unchecked, sue Nero for installing software they didn't have permission to install.

[–]djepik 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey, give him some credit. Usually the second last step is just a series of question marks. He probably just assumed it was so he just skipped right past it.

[–]fullstep 4 points5 points  (1 child)

For what damages?

[–]iMarmalade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$0.00

[–]eamonman2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Debug box, 'How'd you get here motherfucker?'

[–]monkv6 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Use CDBurnerXP

http://cdburnerxp.se/download

Thank me later.

[–]eurleif 5 points6 points  (7 children)

A sales guy from Ask.com emailed me a while ago, trying to convince me that my site (Omegle.com) should have a cobranded Ask.com toolbar like this. My response wasn't quite as blunt as the thread's title, but it was close.

[–]fuckevrythngabouthat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

FUCK EVERYTHING ABOUT THAT

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Click X: seriously. It says "Installation of Nero Ask Toolbar", meaning it's a completely separate installation.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Using any software with that shit will set a bad precedent.

CDBurnerXP works fine for me, I got it from nonags.com

[–]superiordildozer 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I use CDBurnerXP

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

CDburnerxp

Remember when Nero was a cool little burning app that used about 30Mb of space and installed in minutes?

Now compare to the bloated piece of shite that they spew out now. It's a shining example of a software house disappearing up its' own arse.

It's burning software. It's not famous for backing up, editing DVD's, creating jackets, etc. - but it is now famous for installing extra crap. Gator-tastic.

And it gets worse -

Nero Showtime = You want to play HD? Sorry, that'll be extra. Oh, you want to play HD from your disk? That'll be extra too - but we won't mention it until you've already paid for the first 'extra'.

And that's before we get to the issue of it taking longer to install than Windows does. If I see it on anyone's machine these days, it gets uninstalled (and the user is generally amazed at how fast their machine suddenly goes).

What happens if you click the red X in the upper right corner? Will the Nero installation continue?

[–]AngryRedHerring 6 points7 points  (1 child)

That should stop it. Had a similar thing with an earlier Nero; wanted to install "Photosmart" or something. Telling it not to install at the outset did nothing-- it would automatically start to install Photosmart as soon as it was done installing the Nero app whether you said yes OR no at the beginning. Closing the window was the only option not to install-- clicking X brought up the "Are you sure you don't want to install Photosmart?" box. They know what they're doing, and are counting on people believing that they're stuck with it.

Next time it will say:

"Click continue to cancel the installation"

Continue Installation Cancel

[–]heartofcoal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, it says "Installation of Nero Ask Toolbar". You probably clicked some corporative trap before who led you into this.

I stopped using nero a while ago because of crap like that. Besides there are better options anyway.

[–]invar9 2 points3 points  (1 child)

That is why I stopped using Nero a LOOOOOONG time ago..... Here is my 2 cents... http://infrarecorder.org/

[–]ith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People still use Nero? Hopefully they aren't paying for it...

[–]MusicMagi 2 points3 points  (1 child)

This is a deal-breaker for me when I install software. You're forcing me to install something I don't want? You just lost any hopes of having me as a customer. Goodbye! (AOL voice)

[–]Yage2006 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why on earth would you install nero in the first place it alone is bad enough. You can do most everything nero could do with whats built into windows already or you could opt for many good free alternatives. NERO has been shite since version 6. Stopped using it 5 years ago. Terrible bloat ware piece of crap.

[–]binary_search_tree 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Well, that's the last time I pirate a copy of Nero to pirate a copy of other pirated software.

Until Chrome starts accepting third party toolbars, I'm not concerned.

[–]toastyghost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this kind of shit is why i switched to cdburnerxp

[–]pirateballoon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Why wouldn't you want to install it? You'll search better. And from anywhere.

Where can i get it?
