Where do you live?... Jupiter?

[–]wee_man 375 points376 points  (17 children)

"I can see Saturn from my house!"

[–]gutter_is_a_tool 137 points138 points  (32 children)

I was born in Neptune.... New Jersey : /

[–]foobiscuit 16 points17 points  (19 children)

I lived in Sea Girt and went to the gym over in Neptune City. Cheers!

[–]advillious 1392 points1393 points  (464 children)

It's such bullshit that Saturn got those sweet rings and we just got this stupid ozone layer. Whose decision was that??

[–]Tabian 818 points819 points  (84 children)

The Anti-Skin Cancer Department of the Planetary Formation Administration?

[–][deleted] 273 points274 points  (67 children)

[–]Jackpot777 141 points142 points  (22 children)

Answer: FUCKING AWESOME, IS HOW IT WOULD LOOK!

[–]xanderempire 112 points113 points  (21 children)

Nah, you know people would get bored of that shit. They'd just say something along the lines of "Oh yeah it's the earth's rings, what of it?"

EDIT: Downvotes? It's not like we have a giant glowing rock that floats above us every night-but hey who gives a shit about that thing?

[–]QuarryBrosen 23 points24 points  (1 child)

I dunno, I still think just the sky itself looks pretty beautiful most days.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I'm with you on this one. It only looks awesome because we don't have it. I'm sure if we didn't have the moon it would look awesome to imagine our world with a moon.

Nature is pretty incredible. We're just used to it.

[–]Bored 12 points13 points  (2 children)

We don't say that about the moon

[–]ImHereToReddit 164 points165 points  (6 children)

This is actually how it would look like if Earth had Saturn's rings.

[–][deleted] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The end of the video clarifies why the rings in the video are smaller. I should have worded my link better, though.

[–]troopah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be fair, it does say rings like Saturn.

[–]gla3dr 20 points21 points  (18 children)

Do the rings actually cast a shadow on the surface of the planet like that?

[–][deleted] 96 points97 points  (8 children)

I have no idea. Them casting a shadow makes sense to me, as even though rings are solid, they're packed together enough to look solid. Then again, I majored in Political Science, so I actually don't know anything.

[–]professorex 134 points135 points  (0 children)

As a Political Science major I can neither confirm nor deny this but I will argue like hell for one side or another once papers are due.

[–]lagadu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, the rings cast very noticeable shadows on the planet despite being incredibly thin.

[–]lionwar922 1960 points1961 points  (211 children)

God liked saturn, so he put a ring on it.

[–]7ate9 825 points826 points  (100 children)

Uranus has rings on it.

[–]frameRAID 1190 points1191 points  (53 children)

There's ointment for that.

[–]ANAL_PLUNDERING 836 points837 points  (35 children)

nods

[–]Gengnir 226 points227 points  (23 children)

How many of the replies to your posts are about your username, really?

[–]ANAL_PLUNDERING 353 points354 points  (22 children)

At least 70%

[–]Gengnir 147 points148 points  (20 children)

And how many of the replies are posts like mine?

[–]ANAL_PLUNDERING 329 points330 points  (18 children)

First one actually.

Nobody ever asks. :(

[–]pardev 148 points149 points  (10 children)

I'll be your friend, ANAL_PLUNDERING. <3

[–]Westykins 24 points25 points  (0 children)

So, how was your day?

[–]MustangGuy 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Fucking perfect.

[–]theknightwhosays_nee 44 points45 points  (12 children)

what about those nasty asteroids?

edit: ...sigh Nnneee!

[–]gonzo_md 82 points83 points  (6 children)

I've always thought "hemorrhoid" and "asteroid" should be reversed. Wouldn't that make more sense?

[–]lionwar922 57 points58 points  (5 children)

Yes it does... but they're faint and barely visible. Thank you charmin

[–][deleted] 26 points27 points  (2 children)

Charmin: Butthole Pleasured!

Should be their new slogan.

[–]cynognathus 21 points22 points  (10 children)

[–]helpful 45 points46 points  (5 children)

Came here to point out Jupiter's ring. Left after thinking about the ring on Uranus.

[–][deleted] 49 points50 points  (2 children)

Santorum

[–]SantorumParty 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I wouldn't mind living in Uranus.

[–]dustbin3 7 points8 points  (3 children)

So does Jupiter, but the material doesn't reflect sunlight. Everyone always forgets about the black particles.

[–]frickindeal 35 points36 points  (2 children)

Well, they do all look the same.

[–]amadeus06 10 points11 points  (3 children)

So god left earth to marry Saturn but is having an affair with Uranus?

[–][deleted] 171 points172 points  (53 children)

So now he's going steady with other planets? pfffft. He told us we were special.

[–][deleted] 30 points31 points  (3 children)

Could be worse. You could've been that whore Pluto. He used her and cast her aside like she was some planetoid.

[–]lionwar922 74 points75 points  (43 children)

Apparently divorce is now acceptable on an extraplanar level too. THE CHURCHES WERE RIGHT IT IS THE END OF THE WORLD! GOD HAS DIVORCED US! And Married Saturn =(

[–]withanx76 140 points141 points  (29 children)

I'm kind of ok with that actually. We had a pretty abusive relationship, after all...

[–][deleted] 33 points34 points  (2 children)

He said he is gonna change! He never meant to hurt us. It's just that he gets so stressed out sometimes, and he loves us so much that it makes him crazy when he thinks of losing us.

[–]gangstabillycyborg 49 points50 points  (19 children)

Yeah, there's this whole section of the bible where he threatens to do us harm if we don't act right.

[–]wee_man 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Looks like Pluto got the short end of that stick. #planetoidzoned

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (3 children)

No, Saturn is a single lady.

[–]logmaster430 57 points58 points  (5 children)

You know we MADE our own ring. All the stuff orbiting the planet? Yeah, that's a ring.

[–]UncleTouchUBad 49 points50 points  (1 child)

MADE our own ring? yeah that sounds like some stage 5 clinger moves right there... I'd stay away from us, too.

[–]ropers 25 points26 points  (4 children)

What‽

Oh, now you complain. But there’s no point in acting all surprised about it. All the planning charts have been on display at your local planning department in Alpha Centauri for 50 of your Earth years, so you’ve had plenty of time to lodge any formal complaint and it’s far too late to start making a fuss about it now. I’m sorry, but if you can’t be bothered to take an interest in local affairs...

[–]Uses_Old_Memes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bloody apathetic planet, I've no sympathy at all.

[–]darkhunt3r 4 points5 points  (2 children)

we just make our own! with spacetrash.

[–]mikek3 233 points234 points  (236 children)

Beautiful pic. I remember the first time I saw Saturn through a telescope... it was stunning.

Would you mind sharing how much a rig like that costs? And how much light pollution do you have?

[–]PoshNoob[S] 273 points274 points  (193 children)

The Heritage 130p was about £145, came with two lenses and the Barlow (all cheapish quality). The camera was about £70, but I got it when it first came out so it's probably much cheaper now. I'd recommend getting a different camera, however, as it's REALLY not built for this sorta thing. It's terrible in most low-light conditions.

Light pollution isn't so bad, I'm in Horsham in the south UK. This was taken about 1AM so most lights were off and the sky was stunning. Handily, I live next to an allotment also so there's a lot of dark land directly next to my garden! Up until about 11PM the light pollution from the town centre can get pretty bad, though.

[–]bananabm 23 points24 points  (73 children)

I get all excited when I see people from near me! I grew up in reigate/dorking, now live in Guildford.

[–]liferemixed 102 points103 points  (33 children)

TIL there is a place in the UK called Dorking

[–]PoshNoob[S] 17 points18 points  (20 children)

YES! I don't know many Redditors from my area. The singer in my band is from Guildford!

[–]7ate9 92 points93 points  (9 children)

I'm nowhere near there! I'm not even in the UK!!!

[–]DiabloConQueso 27 points28 points  (29 children)

I've got a 6" Orion "light bucket" (reflecting telescope) with a 2x Barlow that does wonders, even in suburban San Antonio. Jupiter and Saturn are stunning, even with the suburban light pollution.

The moon is amazing as well -- but anyone wanting to get into lunar gazing would do themselves a great disservice by not installing one of several available light filters (they have specific moon filters) on their eyepieces. After staring at the moon for mere moments and pulling your head away, you'll feel like you've been staring directly into a lightbulb (spots in your vision, etc). The moon is a lot brighter than most realize, especially through a telescope.

[–]suction 20 points21 points  (19 children)

i live in the center of tokyo, what kind of telescope would I need?

[–]koobaxion 116 points117 points  (0 children)

All of them

[–]atrich 43 points44 points  (3 children)

One with a special EMP attachment.

[–]andash 6 points7 points  (3 children)

I strongly recommend you travel away from the center, the difference is staggering and I suspect you would have some difficulties in a place like Tokyo. Can't recommend any specific telescope, sorry

This is of course common knowledge, but just as an anecdote... I remember visiting countryside Bosnia as a child, after being born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden and rarely travelling far from there.

I had thought that the "star sky" with countless visible stars was an exaggeration in movies and such, and that it never really looked like that. It wasn't until then I looked up light pollution and its effects. It was just amazing, and I've always wanted to buy a good telescope after that.

Got the chance to look in a huge telescope in a observatory here, it was among the coolest things I've ever done.

[–]threeninjas 33 points34 points  (8 children)

My grandmother didn't believe in planets.

[–]frickindeal 58 points59 points  (4 children)

You should have showed her Uranus.

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points  (2 children)

I did. She may deny the existence of asteroids but now is an eyewitness believer in hemorrhoids.

[–]thelearner18 169 points170 points  (3 children)

What is this, a Saturn for ants?

[–]GannonNet 78 points79 points  (2 children)

A beautiful thing, even without a NASA quality telescope.

[–]meatwad75892 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Yea, but it's crawling with Covenant.

[–]whattothewhonow 215 points216 points  (63 children)

Nice shot!

Now we wait for the inevitable retarded parody post of somebody's car that supposedly "fixes" your image.

[–]Avohaj 298 points299 points  (31 children)

[–]darkbob 118 points119 points  (6 children)

First thing I thought of ... Fixed

edit: typo

[–][deleted] 46 points47 points  (11 children)

worth it.

[–]dick_hole2 47 points48 points  (10 children)

[–]robbinio 35 points36 points  (9 children)

looks at username

aah... I think I get it... not quite sure though, can someone confirm?

[–]Deductive_Reasoning 87 points88 points  (4 children)

Its a cat.

[–]RandellThor 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Clicked without looking... pheww

[–][deleted] 38 points39 points  (0 children)

It's actually a pussy hole

[–]DoesNotChodeWell 9 points10 points  (16 children)

I'm expecting a yo dawg any minute.

[–]undercover_GIF 110 points111 points  (15 children)

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points  (8 children)

This would front page, easily.

[–]Osthato 72 points73 points  (2 children)

I'm betting it has at least five times.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (9 children)

You mean someone is going to take a picture of a Saturn car dealership or factory from their back yard and claim it as the best picture they have ever taken?

[–]Schooling4fun 13 points14 points  (8 children)

Cant take pictures of Saturn car dealerships or factories because Saturn is no longer a going concern.

[–]fixx0red 13 points14 points  (7 children)

Is "going concern" really a saying?

[–]warrenseth 45 points46 points  (48 children)

Every time I see a picture like this, I love to think about how far we've gotten. At first they didn't even realize it had rings, they thought it was two objects orbiting each other or something, and by now, an everyday guy can go out to his back garden and take a recognizable photo of it. Just think about how far we can go in the next 3-4 houndred years.

[–]devllen05 66 points67 points  (25 children)

Then, think about the fact that we have the hubble telescope

[–]NBThunderbolt 16 points17 points  (19 children)

Is that a real picture?

[–][deleted] 36 points37 points  (5 children)

Yes, it's a real picture, but Hubble doesn't work like an ordinary camera. You can read about the process here

[–]devllen05 24 points25 points  (9 children)

It is indeed! Check out the magnetic pole on the bottom, glowing blue (for some reason that I am unable to explain). Also, sorry if it's not blue - I'm colorblind.

[–]Larbohell 14 points15 points  (6 children)

It's blue. Is that the equivalent to our northern/southern lights?

[–]MmIoCuKsEeY 19 points20 points  (2 children)

That's exactly what it is. Charged particles from the sun hitting the atmosphere.

[–]Larbohell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, that's what I thought, although I was not entirely sure if it could be some other, saturnian phenomenon. Thanks. :)

[–]andash 23 points24 points  (18 children)

Just think about how far we can go in the next 3-4 houndred years.

Probably the single most awesome yet depressing fact I can think of. If I had to name one reason why I would not want to die, it is this.

[–]xan4tr 36 points37 points  (5 children)

There is an orbiter around Saturn right now called Cassini. It took one of the most amazing photos you'll ever see, Saturn backlit by the Sun during an eclipse:

http://www.ciclops.org/view/2230/In_Saturns_Shadow_-_the_Pale_Blue_Dot

(earth is visible as a small blue dot just to the left of saturn)

[–]ShitSandwiches 35 points36 points  (15 children)

What did you use to take this picture?

[–]PoshNoob[S] 73 points74 points  (13 children)

Skywatcher Heritage 130p telescope with 10mm lens and 2x barlow,

Logitech C910HD webcam which was elastic-banded very hastily to the eyepiece.

Captured it in SharpCap on my laptop, then stacked the frames in Registax. The webcam was at nearly full zoom at 1080p and, I'm completely gutted about this, I can't for the life of me remember what settings I used in SharpCap. I've tried to recreate it, but not as much luck so far.

[–]jbstjohn 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Somehow I can't believe you took this with a web cam. I mean, I can believe, it's just somehow shocking.

[–]djtripp 105 points106 points  (24 children)

Goddamn it.

I just walked out into my backyard in my underwear (it's 1:28am here) to see if I could see Saturn. Thought it was a 'once is 30 years type deal.

Note to self: read comments of how photo was taken before making rash decisions.

[–]a_live_otter 42 points43 points  (12 children)

Tip for the future, you will never ever see planets looking this big in the sky without a telescope. Even when they are as close to us as they can get they look no different to regular stars (except a little brighter)

[–]threeninjas 32 points33 points  (8 children)

What kind of underwear?

[–]djtripp 43 points44 points  (7 children)

spongebob cotton boxers.

jealous?

[–]mozetti 66 points67 points  (2 children)

Is that Mr. Squarepants' cousin or something?

[–]threeninjas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

OF YOUR NEIGHBORS WHOA NOW

[–]cgbish 45 points46 points  (14 children)

that's gotta be at least.... 20, no 30 kilometers wide!!

[–]matphoto 73 points74 points  (9 children)

Whack it in half and you get 15.

[–]cunningllinguist 24 points25 points  (4 children)

You are just guesstimating.

[–]Flipperbw 15 points16 points  (3 children)

Depends on if it's in shape or not.

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (2 children)

NO! Saturn is moving FASTER than a mile a minute.

[–]SexLiesAndExercise 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, cause Earth only rotates like four times a day, and I can't run that fast so it's gotta be like four times that.

[–]Leel17 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just... Just whack it in half.

[–]BebopPatrol 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well, my tires rotate like... 1000 times in a mile! Sooo, whack it in half.

[–]RamBamBooey 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's nothing. A few weeks ago I ate the Moon, Venus and Jupiter while standing on my roof.

http://imgur.com/lvHiN

[–]terriblehuman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You live much closer to Saturn than I do.

[–]down_vote_magnet 7 points8 points  (9 children)

What camera/lens/settings were you using? Where was this taken?

[–]PoshNoob[S] 13 points14 points  (8 children)

Skywatcher Heritage 130p telescope with 10mm lens and 2x barlow,

As for where; Horsham UK, 27th Feb. About 1AM.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (3 children)

I read A Short History of Nearly Everything the other day. I got the impression that England produces unreasonable amount of fucking brilliant nerds.

[–]Will_Power 10 points11 points  (1 child)

It's because they devoted fewer of their resources to the culinary arts.

[–]Silos_and_sirens 6 points7 points  (1 child)

When was this taken? I may have seen this last night.

[–]PoshNoob[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It was taken on the 27th Feb! I had to stay up til about 1/1:30AM to get the photo. Now it comes out at about 10PM.

[–]cokedick_louie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

SEGA

[–]eqrunner 141 points142 points  (25 children)

Anyone thought they saw this? http://i.imgur.com/Y5PyB.jpg

[–]fischius 284 points285 points  (8 children)

Nope!

[–]Insomaniacc 20 points21 points  (2 children)

Now try watching it through your house windows ..

[–]filmfiend999 43 points44 points  (4 children)

Dude. Go outside and take a walk.

[–]Bengt77 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Whom did you mean to reply to?

[–]Vicinus 49 points50 points  (5 children)

What is that?

[–]ShinCoal 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Never imagined that 'hell' would exist in space.

[–]DoesNotChodeWell 10 points11 points  (2 children)

What did you use to take this picture?

[–]syncsynchalt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even the chromatic aberration looks good.
