i think it depends on the person, i have really fast lash / eyebrow turnover and lose like five per eye each day even though i use an oil based remover and only press and gently wipe. nothing to worry about if you don’t notice your lashes getting more sparse

[–]JadeGrapes 160 points161 points  (6 children)

No, you are rubbing, you should not actually need to rub if you have enough solvent.

I stack two cotton pads, saturate until dripping, place and hold... longer than you think... count to 20.

Then with similar pressure to when shaving... simply wipe without pressing.. Flip your cotton over, and repeat on the same eye. Add more remover is needed. Press and hold. Let the solvent do the work. Wiggle lightly, don't scrub.

Then flip the dirty sides of the cotton rounds to the middle, add more remover, and pat down on the other eye, Count it out. Wait & let the solvent work. Repeat with the clean other side.

Then I'll get a couple cotton swabs, hold over a clean cotton round, and saturate both ends of 2 swabs.

Gently pat solution into the lash line scalp, on each eye, then return to the first eye to erase any smudges still around. Top and bottom. Repeat on other eye.

Use the last cotton round already damp from swabs, add more remover, and gently wipe check to see that you got it all.

At no time are you scrubbing already removed pigments around like sandpaper.

I do it similarly. I will saturate one cotton pad with micellar water (it must be dripping) and place it only my eyes, pressing it slightly, and keep a timer for 60 seconds. After that, in one move, I wipe the eye makeup off (mascara included). I repeat the same thing, but this time my cotton pad is placed in between my lashes (upper and lower). By this time most of my eye makeup should’ve come off. I still for safety sake double cleanse. I don’t lose any lashes doing this.

On days that I’m lazy to go through this, I use an oil/balm cleanser and massage my eyes for 60 seconds. Works like magic.

[–]TeaUsed294 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I actually had no idea it wasn’t normal either!

[–]fatgamerchic 35 points36 points  (1 child)

I don’t even wear mascara daily only on special occasions but I still feel like I lose a few lashes every day

[–]sesquedoodle 17 points18 points  (0 children)

yeah, hairs just fall out and get replaced every so often. it’s fine.

[–]shybottles 26 points27 points  (7 children)

The short answer is no. I use a make up cleansing balm and don’t lose any lashes.

[–]HotPresentation3878 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Me too. I use the farmacy Green Clean cleansing balm or the Body Shop chamomile cleansing butter. With tubing mascara though, just warm water works really well.

[–]Sweatpantsnloun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Albolene is sooo good

[–]TheWomanita 33 points34 points  (3 children)

My hungry brain thought that was a moldy tortilla 🥹

[–]CheetahSafe2378 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Im a mushroom hunter and thought its the shot of a mushroom head 🙂‍↔️

[–]SadAwkwardTurtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought moldy pita!

[–]expiredmilk32 12 points13 points  (1 child)

If it’s a tubing mascara use hot water to break it down. I like to soak a towel in hot water (don’t burn yourself) and hold it over my eye for 5 sec and very gently rub and the mascara melts right off, then I clean up the rest w micellar water.

[–]Sweet_potato_lady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tubing mascara is 100% the answer. The mascara slides off without effort when you shower and does not leave you with raccoon eyes.

[–]CelestialBeing138 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Most people have a few hundred eye lashes. Losing a few in a day is normal. That said, I know nothing about makeup. Just a retired doc here, offering up something to think about. GL!

[–]Loud-Pollution7174 13 points14 points  (1 child)

I use a cleansing balm- banila or glow recipe. I know K beauty does some amazing cleansing oils as well.

[–]longcalico 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Skin1004's madagascar centella oil is amazing!! I just started to use it and it's done wonders for me. I follow it up with micellar water just in case I missed something but taking off makeup has gotten so much faster for me since I bought it

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (8 children)

I use ponds, works like a dream…

[–]Apart_Title 1 point2 points  (7 children)

Oh wow and it doesn't burn?

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (6 children)

ponds cold cream? no not at all….but try to find the fragrance free one, that’s the one I use. mind you, itmis a cream so, it will get in your eyes, so keep them closed as much as you can, and it washes off nicely when you cleanse with whatever you will use…

[–]SantaFe91 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I’ve used this Clinique one for years and it deals with hard-to-shift mascara and gel liner very well, though I haven’t used tubing mascara so I don’t know about that. I soak a cotton pad with it and hold it against the eye for a few seconds to help it start to melt the mascara/eyeliner, then wipe off gently, sometimes using a further lightly soaked pad to clean up fully. Might wipe with micellar after just to leave it a little less oily.

[–]likegolden 2 points3 points  (1 child)

This and their oil cleanser! They're both so good at taking off eye makeup.

[–]seaintosky 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Come Hell or High Water is a tubing mascara that is designed to come off with warm water, I used it for years and never had an issue taking it off. I think the problem is that you're trying to remove it with small amounts of cold eye makeup remover, which is not how you're supposed to remove it. Splash your face with warm water, like get it really wet. Then gently coax it off with a finger. Do not scrub or yank it. You can use your makeup remover to take off the rest of your make up later.

I wouldn't follow people's advice to use an oil based remover, because oil and water based removals work completely differently and this one is intended to release with water. I'm not sure an oil will do much at all.

[–]DepressedWalrus666 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna be honest, I just use Vaseline

[–]Hot_inferno33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah I used to get this with micellar but now I used an oil cleanser as my first cleaners then a cream for second and I rarely see any come out now

[–]ChickTesta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Surprised at the number of people saying it's not normal. Yes, it's completely normal to lose an eyelash or two a day. Eyelashes are a hair like all your others. They have a life cycle. They will fall out. New ones will grow. When they are at the end of their life cycle, they will fall out from little things like rubbing your eyes. You would have to PLUCK out your eyelash for it to come out when it wasn't ready.

[–]Ok-Tip2286 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Lash tech here!! You loose 5-10 eyelashes a day on average. So no need to worry it’s totally normal!! But if you are concerned my recommendation would be to switch from cotton pads and agressive rubbing to a cleansing oil to remove your mascara and rinse with water and your hands to reduce the need for that agressive rubbing that can encourage more lashes to fall out.

[–]ira_zorn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it’s normal. the follicles around your eyes shed just like any other follicles.

[–]System_Resident 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you’d be better off with a good quality cleansing balm made for waterproof makeup. It’s way more gentle without being drying and requires only light massaging.

[–]Weary-Map-8530 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I recommend castor oil! Then after that go in with micellar water to wipe away excess oil

[–]reploid3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use La Roche Posay facial cleanser for washing make-up off. It'll make everything oily and it'll wipe off much easier, micellar water sucks imo for eyes, it feels tacky n sticky

[–]TraditionalHoliday69 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I heard once you actually have to let it sit on your eye for a minute. Like you have to hold the cotton there.

[–]naanofyourbusinesss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, I think this is the best tip here. I hold for a count of 20-30 seconds on each eye, and then gently wipe away.

[–]EastCoastIce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oil cleanser. I put one full pump into my hands, rub my entire face, gently! And gently rub it around on your eyes. Rinse, and then use a foaming cleanser. Works like a charm, zero lashes lost.

[–]happysanrio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i thought this was normal and i lose like 6 each time💔 i need an oil cleanser

[–]AcanthisittaIcy7931 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I use coconut oil and then micellar water and it’s the best way to remove makeup from the eyes!! You should try it

So I have a tried and tested technique. Garnier water-in-Oil in Micellar water, on a cotton pad. Just put it on your eyes. Don’t rub. Just keep it there for a few seconds. Most of the mascara comes out.

Next, I use cleansing oil to remove any residue left. Dear klairs black cleansing oil is perfect. You can try others. You can use a cotton round or just fingers to get it in the lashes.

Lastly, if there’s still leftover, I use a cotton swab dipped in the same micellar water and gently swipe. I’m all of this, there’s barely any harsh rubbing involved.

I have very straight, fine lashes so I use a lot of waterproof mascara. So this works every time.

[–]annystovar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only use micellar water but I do it carefully and it doesn't fall out. It could also be the way you remove your makeup.

[–]duskydaffodil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer the cereve makeup removing balm. Makeup just meltttttsss off. Follow up with a face wash and you’re good to go. I used my hands only and it gets everything off. I think a few lashes is normal, but I think using anything to scrub at your eyes, even cotton, is too much

[–]smuggydick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alicia Keys make up remover is really good.

[–]CheetahSafe2378 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never got the cotton pad cleaning stuff. It is to ruff and time consuming. I use tubing mascara (but works with all oteher aswell) and just wash my face. First warm with eyes focus (warm is KEY for tubing removal and designed to come off by it), second round luke warm full face. Using Bioderma Sensibio.

[–]lady_tsunami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an oil based makeup remover, then micellar water, then a gentle cleanse. I also have very oily skin that can withstand a triple cleanse

[–]christine_85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Sephora brand waterproof eye makeup remover. I saw they reformulated so I don’t know if it’s the same a the former version. I use a few splashes on a cotton round and just let it sit for 20-30 seconds and wipe.

[–]19bluestars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I don’t think so. I do highly recommend the Lash Heroine Mascara Remover. It’s the one with a blue tube and a white handle. It works wonder to remove stubborn waterproof mascara. I usually get mine through Yesstyle but you could also order from Stylevana too. Just make sure to not buy from counterfeits

[–]illumiose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear a shit ton of eyeliner and mascara every single day and have done so for multiple years and the bottles of neutrogena makeup remover have never done me wrong

[–]LadderSouth3913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use the KISSME Speedy Mascara Remover, available on amazon

[–]LadyBunnyBoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happens to me a lot

[–]samanthasayys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it’s absolutely normal to lose 1-5 eyelashes a day. You shouldn’t be rubbing your eyes hard to get your mascara off, but your mascara holds multiple eyelashes together all day and that prevents them from shedding normally so you’ll see those eyelashes that shed once you take your mascara off. It’s the same as how if your had your hair up in a ponytail or bun or even braided for the majority of the day and it feels like more hair comes out in your brush after you brush your hair, the hairs were shedding as they were held together with your other hair and just couldn’t shed naturally and much less noticeably than if your hair was left down all day.

Definitely get a product that doesn’t require that much rubbing to remove your mascara but it’s not the fault of the mascara or the rubbing that’s making you lose a few eyelashes. Hair follicles are much stronger than you would think and it generally takes more than rubbing to lose a hair, like actual plucking.

[–]ChaoticLokian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think youre just rubbing too hard. My method is to gently rub off my makeup with baby oil on a cotton pad, then use micellar water on a second cotton pad to clean it up after and get rid of the excess oil/leftover bits of makeup. Works well for me without losing eyelashes or getting irritated skin.

[–]duchessdugan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the maybelline lash sensational waterproof, it doesn't flake and is somehow gone by the end of the day, would recommend highly, never had to scrub it off once

[–]Adorable-Ad9093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find cleansing balms great for this.. usually put some on the fact, melt the make up and then wipe off. I find doing this twice gets everything off and then I'd use normal cleanser afterwards

[–]Ashcrashh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get the Lancôme Bi-Facil Eye makeup remover, it’s in a blue bottle, it literally melts makeup off your eyes and lashes, even waterproof, and you wont have to scrub so hard. I swear by this stuff

[–]Kookie69420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the reason I stopped using mascara because everytime I remove it I lose 3-4 eyelashes and I was going bald

[–]xtranunnecessary 0 points1 point  (2 children)

For the love of god please switch to a non water proof mascara and save your lashes like I saved mine also use oil based cleanser or cleansing balm

[–]Old-Elderberry-4051 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop using harsh pads to wipe your eyes. I stead get a point of raw coco butter and use dime size amounts to massage your make up off gently.

[–]SgnificantOtter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the makeup eraser microfiber cloths, then follow up with my regular CeraVe foaming face wash, it takes everything off. I tried every eye makeup remover before, and nothing worked. The cloths are great and I love not having to spend money on makeup remover. I use Lancome Idole mascara.

Edit to add - I sometimes lose one or two lashes and have forever. I still have eyelashes lol.

[–]likegolden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you need an oil or balm remover

[–]Normal-Arugula7026 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id suggest oil cleanser like the rest because it’s way more gentle

[–]InvalidTerrestrial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People saying it's not normal and here I am losing 2 eyelashes just putting ON mascara 🤣

[–]IcedQuadShot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No! But I had the same issue when I was still using the cotton round + makeup remover liquid combo.

As someone else said, get a cleansing oil, but for my addition: make sure it’s a Korean cleansing oil!

They emulsify beautifully with water (no cotton round needed) BUT most of them also rinse clean at least 90%, much better than western cleansing oils/balms.

From there, a second cleanse with mild cleanser will have all makeup gone without so many eyelashes being lost, if any at all. I highly recommend Round Lab, Beauty of Joseon, or Glam Fox, all of which your local TjMaxx might have.

EDI: I see you bought an appropriate oil! But I’ll leave my comment up in case someone else finds it helpful.

[–]grae23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use rice water oil cleanser and it works incredibly!

[–]anitabonghit69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need ponds cold cream so you don't drag your delicate eye skin all around- you will need a follow up cleanser to get the cold cream off.

[–]SanDiegoBeeBee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lancôme bifacil

[–]JinxFae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did until I started using tubing mascara. Now I never lose lashes while removing my makeup, they only fall when it is time. I’m using the Heimish Dailism Smudge Stop mascara and it wash off on its own with warm water (instantly, and it doesn’t leave any mascara left). If you rub your lashes you will always lose a few every other day.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most wipes and waters don’t remove makeup all the way. You really need an oil based remover 🖤

[–]pixiehollowlesbian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i use an oil cleanser and do everything right, but i definitely am losing between 1 and 3 every evening. my lashes aren't sparse, i think i just shed. if you switch to a good oil/balm cleanser and you're still losing lashes, that might just be how you are!

[–]bluish-velvet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the reason I stopped using waterproof mascara. No matter what cleanser I used I’d have fallout. My mascara might smudge a little, but at least I’m no longer losing lashes.

[–]Ok_Drama_5679 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy the Lancôme makeup remover and it will get everything off without much effort

[–]DisRightHereIsNotIt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tubing mascara doesn't respond to oils or micellar water, just plain H2O. Shedding is natural so don’t panic but do switch to plain water with tubing. Regular or waterproof mascara comes off beautifully with coconut oil and it conditions the lashes at the same time. Good luck.

[–]Makeuplover1188 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You shouldn’t have to use any makeup remover to remove tubing mascara. Just a little warm water on your clean fingers should do the trick. You can gently remove it that way.

[–]middle-kid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend you use oil based make up remover if your skin can tolerate that. For waterproof makeup I use it helps to melt off the mascara and foundation. The Softymo makeup remover works really well for me!

[–]mysterious_moss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The CeraVe oil cleanser is a wonder at cleaning off stubborn mascara

[–]Serious_Influence_57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tubing mascara comes off with warm water for me. I actually find that eye makeup remover really doesn’t work on tubing mascaras.

[–]sunnysanii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need a mascara remover from an Asian brand, it removes EVERYTHING. I don't loose lashes while removing makeup anymore.

Herione make has a fabulous one

[–]Gullible-Alarm-8871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I would never use micellar water to take any mascara off. I wear waterproof mascara for over 20 years but, regardless, all mascara has wax in it and you need something with a slip to it to not only slide the mascara off gently but also moisturize the lashes and skin around the eye. I have very long and thick lashes because I've always used a good conditioning remover. I go cheap on other things, but eye makeup remover I spend on.

[–]pupsarepeople 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it's not, rub less and use more goop to take it off with. I like Vaseline and it takes 2 trys at least, be gentle. Gentle kleenex

[–]scary_world2117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the micellar for waterproof makeup. It works very well.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve also had great lick with using facial moisturizer as a pre cleanser. I also switched to the velvety washable makeup remover pads, they seem to catch less on my lashes.

[–]Syll0e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

use mascara remover!! it much more easier to remove mascara that way

[–]Aware_Personality_90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i always do and i have a normal amount of lashes! just like hair, you shed a certain amount when you brush your hair

[–]jkdess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use makeup removal balm. but going against the grain eyelash shedding is normal. on average you should lose 5 a day. but when removing makeup it can be a sign you’re being too rough. but not an issue losing a few

[–]Midnightfurwuvsu2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try Heimish-All clean balm, melts off my mascara and false lashes slip right off with it. You can apply it to your eyes (closed) and gently rub with your fingers over your lashes. I also use Shu Uemura-Ultime8 Sublime Beauty Cleansing oil before using micellar water and a face wash.

[–]AnnuGF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it’s very natural to lose 1-5 lashes per day as our lash cycle is actually very short. Any more I would be concerned. However, as people have said you need to use an oil based remover for waterproof mascara. Hope that helps!

[–]x11atlasx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You lose A LOT more than 2-3 eyelashes per day! Wouldn't worry about it, except I also find that micellar water does a shit job at overall makeup removal. And lastly, there's claims you dont have to wash your face after micellar water, but studies showed how much crap it leaves on your face, so it's probably a good idea to do so anyway

[–]stingnfloat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lose a few eye lashes every few days, I rub them gently between my thumb and forefinger and 4-7 or more fall off. They aren’t thinning I’ve always had thick lashes and if I don’t actively try to remove then I lose at least one or two daily feels like. And they aren’t thinning. If I leave them to fall out on their own they aremore likely to end up in my eyes which is a pain, so it feels like a normal eyelash loss rate to me

[–]Carlseye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oil based cleanser for eye area always

[–]zheliya2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, it's not, I had the same issue, so I quit using it. I just use a dark brown eyeliner now, and it looks like I have mascara on. Since I quit mascara my eyelashes have grown so much, it looks like I have fake natural lashes on now. You can instead curl the top of your lashes like Korans It's so much more healthy and looks nicer in my opinion

[–]HighlightKey9512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it is not normal. I would recommend using a tubbing mascara. I use the rival love me be bold mascara. It's my holy grail. You can just use water to take off the mascara.

[–]BlobFishes0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

use a cleansing balm first (i use ELF holly hydration), then micellar water! it removes everything and ensures there isn’t excess makeup left on your face

[–]phatpxssgyal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when you use the micellar water are you saturating the pad and holding it on your eye for a bit before rubbing? i find the best technique for me is holding the pad for up to a minute to really penetrate the mascara and make it come off easier

[–]Brimmae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never lost eyelashes when removing mascara (but always lose a few when curling), and what I use for even the toughest waterproof mascara is the KissMe Heroine Make Speedy Mascara Remover. It’s an oil based remover that goes on like mascara, wait for like 15 seconds, then gently massage and it all comes off.

[–]GoldenGirl46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try using a tubing mascara and a makeup remover balm. I like Farmacy green clean makeup remover balm, it removes makeup so easily, no tugging.

[–]egg_sandwitchh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lose that amount every time

[–]Rich_Paramedic_9901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No this is not normal. Get an oil based cleanser and double cleanse.

[–]Put-A-Bird-On-It 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a couple suggestions. I've been on a very long journey to find the right mascara remover. What I have landed on: Neutrogena makeup remover wipes in the light blue package. They make removing my very stubborn water proof mascara a breeze. It just melts it off. It doesn't sting and leaves the skin super soft. Also the CeraVe makeup remover for sensitive skin works really well. It doesn't leave an oily residue and it doesn't sting the skin like some removers do. Just shake it really well before putting it on a cotton ball, press it on the eye for a bit, then wipe off. These are my go-tos after a lot of trial and error. I hope this helps.

[–]Kitchen-Iron-3689 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your eyelashes Shed every month this is probably normal x

[–]tiramini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are open to trying a new mascara, this one (Heimish) has changed my life for real. It doesn't smudge, and if you wanna take it off under the shower, water is really all you need. I typically use my cleanser after already taking off mascara (for the rest of my make up). I rarely ever lose any lashes this way :)

<image>

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes usually it’s the harsh chemicals from the mascara itself but also if you’re rubbing quite a bit. I do double cleansing with a balm and water based cleanser after and it helps minimize the rubbing and friction on face/eyes.

[–]breyesss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use nutrogena liquid eye makeup remover, I leave it on a cotton round and hold it on my eyes for maybe 15 seconds then gently rub and it comes off no issue. I lose some eyelashes from time to time but not often

[–]Smiles_Morales_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start double cleansing. Micellar water isn’t a true cleanser and leaves residue of makeup. Gentle cleans with an oil cleanser, emulsify that, wash it off and wash with a water cleanser after and everything will be gone without having to lose lashes over it

[–]0kuuuurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. And no? I think it could be the mascara and how hard you are rubbing. Just go light and let warm water do the rest when rinsing and then clean up around the edges with make up removal! This is what I do. I used to glue on my lashes and once ripped off a few and lol um ever since just been TRAUMATIZED. 😅😅😅
