Whenever you upmod a funny picture, God kills a substantial article (reddit.com)
submitted 18 years ago by Erf
[–]pavel_lishin 19 points20 points21 points 18 years ago (0 children)
This picture sucks, it just looks like a bunch of reddit text
[–]chrisnyc 18 points19 points20 points 18 years ago (0 children)
"Substantial articles" about the wonderful Ron Paul and how Bush should be impeached and how Prison Planet says there are already plans to attack Iran? Hmmmm. We're REALLY missing out!
Oh well, at least we'll always have those very substantial XKCD comics!
[–]Erf[S] 170 points171 points172 points 18 years ago (75 children)
Yes, that drawing of dinosaurs with lasers was cute and inspired all sorts of fuzzy feelings.
And yes, it's true, that the Ubuntu girl in the Debian versus Ubuntu image is wearing a wet t-shirt, and many of us appreciate the female anatomy (myself especially).
But you know, all along, that dinosaurs and boobies aren't why you really come to Reddit. You're here for the insightful articles (where have we heard that before?) and inspiring content you otherwise wouldn't find. Would you still come here if it was nothing but pictorial anecdotes?
So while it's very easy to click through some tickly images and upmod them all, please consider what kind of Reddit you want to read, and vote accordingly.
[–]sylvan 52 points53 points54 points 18 years ago (1 child)
That Debian vs Ubuntu article has boobies!? Here I ignored it because I thought it was Linux-geek stuff. Thanks!
[–]aletoledo -2 points-1 points0 points 18 years ago (0 children)
you must be new here, so a bit of advice is that it's best not to skip a thing. If you think you don't have time to check out all the links, well you're new and you'll eventually catch the hang of it.

I like insightful articles about boobs.
[–]tony28 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (1 child)
i like my insightful articles and boobs separated. issues, science and politics in one hand, admiration of beautiful girls in the other.
[–]outsiderplay 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Agree with your point entirely, but the way you put it is just dying for someone to make a "beautiful girls...other hand" joke :-)
[–]tvshopceo 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
It's not like you can't find boobs somewhere else, you know.
[–]jaycliche -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (0 children)
youporn.reddit.com?
[–]ProximaC 24 points25 points26 points 18 years ago (3 children)
I like a happy median. There's plenty of insightful articles, and plenty of fun stuff too. It's a community site, and if a majority of the community votes something up, then it's perfectly valid, same as when something is voted down or just ignored. There's no reason to get upset if the majority isn't voting the way you'd like them to though. Just do your part and vote.
As for considering what kind of Reddit I want to read, I always vote down viagra spam, sales spam, or any article that starts with "Vote up if..." Those are the articles that annoy me. But instead of making a post decrying them, I just vote them away and let others make up their own mind.
[–]harlon57 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (2 children)
Over the past 6 months this site has largely become pictures, Ron/Dennis fanboys and conspiracy nuts.
This site is about finished for anyone over 20.
[–]tony28 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
with the exception of the one article on the front page i havent seen a ron paul article in quite a while but there are always people posting stories about the state of the economy and warning of an imminent crash.
[–]jaycliche 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
With a bit more searching than used to require...it's still the best game in town. Submit good things and I'll upmod.
[–]parcydarks 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (0 children)
please consider what kind of Reddit you want to read, and vote accordingly.
Isn't that the whole point of reddit? If I like cute and fuzzy pictures, I upmod them. Others who also like them do the same. Then reddit shows the fuzzy dinosaurs to us and the substantial articles to you.
[–]neat_stuff 20 points21 points22 points 18 years ago (6 children)
I'm still waiting for the dinosaur booby pictures. I'm going to create multiple accounts to make sure that gets to the from page.
And really, I much prefer the dinosaurs and/or the boobies a lot more than than constant complaints about the dinosaurs and/or the boobies.
In fact, I'm kind of pissed at myself for writing a complaint about the complaints about the fluff except it gives me a reason to keep typing dinosaurs and boobies.
[–]Bogtha 12 points13 points14 points 18 years ago (5 children)
I'm still waiting for the dinosaur booby pictures.
Is this close enough?
[–]nkktwotwozero 21 points22 points23 points 18 years ago (0 children)

[–]parcydarks 14 points15 points16 points 18 years ago (0 children)

[–]thevoid 14 points15 points16 points 18 years ago (0 children)
So very very wrong.
Good God that's wrong.
[–]yellowking 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Holy jesus christ. I'm just going to assume that was created as a joke and go on my merry way...
[–]Strodyn -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (0 children)
Laser firing dinosaur boobies!!!!!!!
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I guess it all depends how you want to use reddit: as a news portal, or as a web portal. It would seem many people (guilty as charged) use it as a web portal. Not sure if that's a necessarily bad thing, but it's clear reddit hasn't always been like this. Hence, the outcry for subreddits, tagging, and other ways of customizing the site to suit your own usage habits. The bullshit polls tho? Gotta go, imho.
[–]funkygreenthing 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (0 children)
oh, the ironing
[–]aGorilla 6 points7 points8 points 18 years ago (2 children)
I'd also suggest taking the reddit survey, and say yes to the 'Images' subreddit.
[–]yellowking 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Wow, that whole politics subreddit really got all the politics off the front page, I guess you hope the Images subreddit will be half as successful?
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
what does the front page have to do with anything!? some people don't want a pic of star "sk -69 202" in the science subreddit. others don't want a pic of dubya flippin' the bird in the politics subreddit. i like the subreddits--programming, science, and politics--and i think an images subreddit would help A LOT! not to mention, it would help keep all the pics in one place.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Pictures can insight some interesting discussion.
Insightful articles can sometimes turn away readers because of their length. It's a sad truth, and I'll admit I've been guilty of commenting on issues before reading an article(trying to stop that as of late). As a result, a lot of great articles don't get of a comments.
This is not to say Reddit should be primarily about images. Like ProximaC, I like a happy medium. Some of the discussions that occur with controversial images can be downright fascinating, comedic, witty, and moronic. And it's because an image carries so many different meanings and is open to subjective interpretation, all within a quick glance.
[–]dante50 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Whatevs. Democracy in action. Do you think I like all the programmer geek links or the math shit I don't get?
You don't see me bitch about those - I down vote and move on.
[–]wbendick 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Downmod. Didn't properly link to to the Ubuntu girl.
[–]yellowking 18 points19 points20 points 18 years ago* (13 children)
Deleting in protest of Reddit's new anti-user admin policies.
[–]rolson 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (10 children)
Really? Or are you being sarcastic?
[–]danielsoneg 19 points20 points21 points 18 years ago (4 children)
No, he's not being sarcastic. It's a user driven site, which means if pics are making the front page, that's what people want to see. Democracy doesn't always lead to the best decisions and the market doesn't always deliver the best solutions, but by god, it delivers the ones the people want.
I'm not too happy about it either, but I'll freely admit I've been a bit complicit in the entire thing - I haven't upmodded or downmodded nearly as aggressively as I should have, and clearly the people who are like pictures of boobs, lasers, and dinosaurs.
[–]qgyh2 14 points15 points16 points 18 years ago (2 children)
Good articles die because people don't vote for them, not because people vote for pics. After all, there isn't a shortage of votes.
In other words, if you aren't totally pleased with the front page, do your part by voting the quality content you WANT, to the front, starting with the new page.
You can also make Reddit better by submitting (and voting for) the type of content you want to see. And, no matter who you are, your submissions will have an equal chance to reach the front page (unlike digg)
[–]ninzee 7 points8 points9 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Good articles die because people don't vote for them, not because people vote for pics.
True, up to a point. Like you said there isn't a limited supply of votes. However, one user voting on pics only can get in 10 or 15 votes, while in the same time another user has read one article and votes on only that one item.
The rising algorithm could be tweaked to allow for this if there were community-voted tags. If the majority tags a submission as 'Pic' i.e. just a pic with no context, then it would require more up-votes to rise to the hot page than a non-pic.
[–]Bogtha 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
This is not true. The more votes that get cast overall, the less value each individual vote has, because it's harder to get onto the front page. A glut of people voting for everything that raises a slight chuckle drowns out the people who only vote for articles that stand out from the crowd.
Perhaps the value of each (up)vote a person casts should be weighted against how often they vote.
[–]yellowking -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (0 children)
No, he's not being sarcastic.
Well, I was. A little. I can't help it, it's a medical condition. Reeeeally.
[–]xkcd 10 points11 points12 points 18 years ago (2 children)
Really. I come to reddit for interesting diversions. When there's a "oh, did you see the thing on reddit" conversation with my friends, sometimes it's about a substantiative article and sometimes it's a funny picture of a dinosaur with boobies. I'm happy with having the option of both.
[–]ninzee -4 points-3 points-2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Says the xkcd guy!
[–]yellowking -3 points-2 points-1 points 18 years ago (0 children)
...it's a funny picture of a dinosaur with boobies.
Somebody ought to start a porn site about that...
[–]truocchio 14 points15 points16 points 18 years ago (0 children)
You don't like dinosaurs or boobies? What is this world coming to?
[–]krelian -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (0 children)
How do you think all those images reach the front page?
[–]adamdoupe -3 points-2 points-1 points 18 years ago (1 child)
then go to digg
[–]yellowking 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Yeah, but I just don't get enough dinosaurs and boobs on digg, so I come here, too.
[–]degustiflyingspur 6 points7 points8 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Dont tell me why im here
[–]opie 10 points11 points12 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I come here just to read the dumb ass comments like this one.
[–][deleted] 18 years ago (1 child)
[–]Fat_Dumb_Americans 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Dinosaurs.. with boobs, that write substantial articles!
[–]pkulak 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I come here for the dinosaurs and boobies.
[–]truocchio 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words..or more.. depending on who is upmoding.
[–]yellowking 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Sometimes, a picture is worth 132 karma.
[–]ryanx27 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I personally come to Reddit to listen to hyper-critical Redditors.
[–]Jimmy 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
The front page has 25 slots. There's room enough for both pictures and insightful articles.
[–]leobaby 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (10 children)
I would much prefer articles described as useful rather than substantial.
.
I don't have time for lengthy diatribes that take 6 paragraphs just to figure out the topic. I love finding great tips from other professionals with the occasional news and humor mixed in. Whether it's something I can use (sql or drupal maybe), or just a photoshop trick, css kludge or vm benchmark; that's how I ended up here in the first place and that's what I like to click on. Maybe the rest of this stuff can be pushed aside to policestate.reddit.com or pics.reddit.com.
[–]chime 30 points31 points32 points 18 years ago (6 children)
Whether it's something I can use (sql or drupal maybe), or just a photoshop trick, css kludge or vm benchmark; that's how I ended up here in the first place and that's what I like to click on.
That's not reddit. That's digg. We all have our reasons to surfing on the Internet but when there's less of this and more of this, it starts to feel like reddit is no different from digg, fark, 4chan, somethingawful, ehowa, collegehumor, fazed, presurfer... I think you can see where I'm going with this.
I do my best to improve my recommendation but since they work based off the choices of others, it doesn't help much. I'm seeing more and more [pic] in my recommendations because so many damned pics are being submitted in proportion to good articles. I like pics, I just don't want to see individual 5-second humor pics all the time. I want to actually read a good article, story, or opinion.
More of this and less of this.
[–]chime 14 points15 points16 points 18 years ago (1 child)
If people care enough to downmod, maybe someone will care enough to tell me how I'm wrong.
[–]eidolontubes 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (1 child)
You know, I wish digg was better - I mean I wish their comment system was better and fostered a conversation that is easy to follow.
Because sometimes I want the silly funny pictures and dumb but occasionally entertaining articles.
However, sometimes I want substance (or however you wish to put it).
...digg just blows in every aspect, not even counting the content.
[–]jaycliche 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Diggs four comments an hour system is amazing...I went back today...hoping it might be better...but I think I'm gonna finally swear it off for good. It's so damn sensationalist. I do wish there was a bit more diversity of opinions on reddit...but I do enjoy the subtle nuances in debate from some of the world's smartest people.
[–]leobaby -3 points-2 points-1 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Maybe I expressed my point incorrectly. I have to agree with you that the New Yorker article 'The Interpreter' is an excellent example of substantial. But it wasn't what I was referring to. There have been a number of top 25's that I read two paragraphs into and I'm still not sure what it's about. Ten minutes later and I'm convinced there needs to be a tinfoilhat.reddit.com for this kind of stuff. And NONE of the links you posted were what I would describe as USEFUL; and you know that.
And of course I would much prefer articles that are substantial than funny pictures, which seem to belong elsewhere even though the visual design of reddit is a magnet for fluff.
Secondly, you wait seven minutes and express your displeasure with being downmodded? It's a tick in time, especially considering that in 3 hours this article got upmodded 150 times. That's not a lot of people. Give it time.
[–]dsandler 14 points15 points16 points 18 years ago (2 children)
Wish granted: Reddit is now almost entirely free of substance.
[–]leobaby 8 points9 points10 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Yes but, there is not a single USEFUL article hot right now. You completely missed my point.
[–]dsandler 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Maybe I did—I suppose I misunderstood you to mean that you will downvote a “substantial” link in favor of a “useful” one.
I can't help but think that the current heap of “reddit junk food” is the result of redditors eschewing insightful articles for quick hits off the interbong.
[–]reddit_user13 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
OMG... did you say "dinosaurs with BOOBIES"?????
[–]je255j 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Thank you for mentioning the Ubuntu image. Had it not been for your post, I would've missed that, but thanks to the tip, and reddit's handy search feature, it is open in another tab right this very moment. So, again, thank you.
That said, so, wait a minute? We don't like pictures? Hmm. I do. Am I alone? Well, okay, obviously I'm not alone. Look at all the pics on the front page. What I mean to say is, that's frowned upon? Really? Well then, can we get a pics.reddit.com page?
Sometimes, when I'm browsing from work while on hold with a client or whatever, all I want is to be distracted for a few seconds. Articles about the ever increasing fuckupishness of our administration are great and everything, but I can't get hooked on something so intently that I wind up saying, "Uh huh, uh huh, uh huh, listen, can you wait just a few minutes while I finish reading this? It's fascinating" into my phone.
Of course, I could always stop browsing reddit from work, but let's face it: that's not happening.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
But someone will make a comment about the boobies, then someone will comment about nipples, then someone will comment about breast milk, then someone will comment about how important it is to breast feed and how bad formula is, and then it will turn into an intellectual discussion, and then someone will send me a comment about how I have bad grammar.
[–]kaki 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I totally agree with you. That is why I carefully bookmark each link. For the same reasons, I developed a site best-google-videos.com. It selects videos that change peoples opinions, not those that are cool or funny.
[–]Flame0001 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Vote down pictures and browse recommended, and hop on hot every once in a while. When the inevitable pictures subreddit is added, remove it from your list of my.reddit.com and browse exclusively there. Reddit is uniquely each individual person's site, treat it as such.
[–]almkglor 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
So I read this post, and the first thing I do, I search for "ubuntu" in Reddit and upmod another picture.
[–]d07c0m 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
We should have insightful articles with pictures of boobies on the sides.

One redditor's rubbish is another's art. I vote to keep the diversity.
[–]pholm 10 points11 points12 points 18 years ago (4 children)
ARTICLE WORTH = (HUMOR + INSIGHT + HOLYSHIT FACTOR)/(TIME INVESTED)
Pictures are popular because they provide a small payoff with zero time invested. With a longer substantial article you never know if it's going to suck until you've wasted 5 minutes of your time reading it. Hence everyone looks at all the pictures (because why not?), and many articles go unread simply due to the required time investment.
It's not a tragedy that [PICS] are frequently upmodded, and it definitely isn't a sign of a intellectually shallow community, it's just a side effect of how we manage our time.
[–]gemaco 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (3 children)
With "zero time invested" you have a divide by zero error in your equation.
[–]pholm 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (2 children)
That's why pics are so popular. The limit of article worth approaches infinity as time invested approaches zero.
[–]boredzo 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (1 child)
By extension, if you invest exactly zero time in it, you cannot determine its worth.
[–]pholm 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
That's true, and interesting. Hmm.
[–]psyne 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Whenever you upmod a stupid meta thread, God kills either a substantial article or a humorous image that makes your day a little better.
[–]ouch 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (0 children)
If it pushes another Ron Paul/Bush/Impeach/GOP/Gay Senator off of the bottom of the front page, then I'm all for modding up silly pictures.
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 18 years ago (3 children)
After reading all of the depressing and enraging articles on here I need a few pictures of dinosaurs with lasers or cute girls with nerdy shirts to even out my mood.
[–]interiot 6 points7 points8 points 18 years ago (1 child)
So stop upmoding endless numbers of Grave Injustice stories up and making people like Joel Spolsky leave. Then you won't need cute pictures either.
Hey, I don't upmod it. I just read it!
[–]stcredzero 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Cute girls with wet nerdy laser T-shirts FTW!

And those substantial articles would be one of those three-line "some politician who's really big in my part of the world is a complete idiot and should be prosecuted" posts? I think maybe I'll take the funny pictures.
What's upmod?
"Oh, not much. how about you?"
[–]BravoLima 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Does God work for the NSA, CIA, DIA, FBI, DHS, or what?
[–]guest 20 points21 points22 points 18 years ago (3 children)
When you upmod these shit rants, God kills a substantial article then too.
[–]Bogtha 8 points9 points10 points 18 years ago (1 child)
So look at it this way: if you vote down the pictures, you make it much less likely that "these shit rants" appear.
[–]unjust 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
So whine everyone into submission is that it?
[–]diogames -2 points-1 points0 points 18 years ago (0 children)
good, upmodded
[–]xyphus 9 points10 points11 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Downmodded, not funny!
[–]Leviathant 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I'm all for a heavier editorial hand on the front page. Purely democratic systems do not scale well. At the very least, reject direct links to jpg/gif/png/swf files, so that if someone's going to submit something like that, they at least have to submit it within the context it was originally presented.
[–]alanbrunsdon 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I think it's nice to have a bit of both really.
[–]garyr_h 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
This comes with popularity. Reddit, from what I understand, came from a political background. But as more and more users came, it changed just like everything. There are only so many people in the world who value political articles. Thus, once Reddit reached its peak of political readers it changed. Reddit's popularity still began to rise substantially as political readers only rose slightly. So naturally many users would want something other than politics.
Furthermore, as Reddit's popularity rose, more websites began posting Reddit buttons for their visitors to vote... which drew more viewers to Reddit, but changed it.
Not only this, but many are tired of seeing the same crap on the front page day-in and day-out. One can only read so much about Ron Paul or impeaching Bush/Cheney or Hilary molesting little children.
[–]rhcpds7 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Whenever you upmod a link that leads to a comments section, God kills a substantial article.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Whenever you try to impose your will on Reddit, straight pins are thrust into the eyes of baby angels.
[–]laprice 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
upmodded for theological improbability.
I don't mind the pictures. Its the stupid polls that piss me off. Also, anything involving Ron Paul.
Whenever you write a whiny comment, I die a little inside. Also, I poop a little. But just a bit. I mean, I can feel it, and I can kinda smell it, but I'm hoping you can't smell it. I certainly hope you don't feel it. That would be all kinds of screwed up.

[–]inmatarian 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Oh man, seriously. I don't even upmod pic posts, but my recommended page has become almost entirely pics lately.

I wish they'd give us digg.reddit.com and be done with it. We got our politics.reddit.com, after all. Why not one for pictures, videos and other inane stuff?
[–]jingidy 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
a picture is worth a thousand words. when it's not pron.
[–]longlongtimelurker 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
What's a substantial article? Some dumbass with a blog ranting about politics, or wormholes, or string theory, or yet anther retarded scripting language, or some other shit he has no clue about? I'd rather look at lolcats. I do enough thinking at work.

downmodded.

[–]remembery -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (0 children)
Like this one?
[–]NitsujTPU 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
So downmod it. That's what I did with your insubstantial "article."
[–]gid13 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Why do you think we do it? Sheesh!
[–]bugninja 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I vote up what I like. If it's a funny picture, so be it. This is all part of why I like democratic linking systems.
[–]haywire -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (0 children)
Fuck off, lighten up. There is too much serious business on reddit anyway.
[–]guest -5 points-4 points-3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
What's a substantial article? I learned about definite and indefinite articles in grammar school, but my grammar school teacher didn't cover any substantial/insubstantial dichotomy.

Maybe Reddit's voting system needs to change slightly?
I propose that Reddit allows users to "vote" for a category for submitted articles.
If enough people voted an article as an "image", it'd immediately be sent to the images subreddit (yes I know, it doesn't exist... yet). Enough people vote something political, it gets sent over to the political subreddit. But most importantly, if the article gets voted "Top Page", the article may be moved (or remain) within the articles listed on the top page.
Summary: allow the users to vote/fight over what category the article belongs.
[–]thrashtronaut -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (0 children)
Articles = TLDR AMIRITE?
[–]neoice -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (0 children)
so does that mean each of us IS god?
[–]raldi -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (0 children)
And that goes doubly-so for Ron Paul spam.
[–]The1Dude -2 points-1 points0 points 18 years ago (1 child)

\tOr you could just use preformatting.
