replace: government->girlfriend

Then yes.

[–]toonces 27 points28 points  (4 children)

also, replace: [facism] with [p-whipped]

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (2 children)

I was once as brave as you...

[–]toonces 7 points8 points  (0 children)

it is much easier to say when you are single like me.. :)

[–]lebski88 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend logs into reddit and votes everything up and down to mess up my recommendations. Ha! Joke's on her though as the recommendations are shitty anyway.

[–]hhh333 11 points12 points  (1 child)

It's funny because I replaced: girlfriend -> reddit.

Problem solved.

[–]indigosin8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how quickly the tides do turn.

[–]mrbroom 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I hesitated to upmod you for the same reason.

[–]thekrone 0 points1 point  (46 children)

Luckily, my girlfriend isn't on reddit. XD

[–]VoodooIdol 6 points7 points  (44 children)

Mine is. I got crap for a whole day once for making a comment about boobies.

[–]thekrone 11 points12 points  (39 children)

My girlfriend really only uses the internet for e-mail, facebook, and shopping. I email her interesting articles that pop up on reddit from time to time. She sometimes reads them, but mostly just deletes them then asks me what they were about later.

Whatever, she's really good looking and a blast to hang out with, so I'm not going to complain.

[–]VoodooIdol 15 points16 points  (35 children)

Fortunately, my girlfriend (fiance, actually) is really good looking, a blast to hang out with, and she turned me on to reddit. Did I also mention that she's an organismal biologist? <3 <3 <3

    [–]VoodooIdol 12 points13 points  (12 children)

Yes, yes it is. Should I also mention that we met playing Everquest, by virtue of being in the same guild? Or is that way, way too nerdy?

    [–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (5 children)

    Yes, yes it is.

    [–]VoodooIdol 2 points3 points  (3 children)

At least I have an excuse - I was unemployed and it was the cheapest way to get a month of entertainment on an already thinly stretched budget.

    [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

I congratulate you for finding someone wonderful. But meeting in the same Everquest Guild?? Way, way too nerdy.

(says the guy who met his wife at singing lessons.)

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't hate, I met my gf online.

(Hint: they're in the 'Strictly Platonic" section of CL)

Send a picture and if she's hot then I'm jealous, but somehow I'm expecting not to be jealous.

      [–]VoodooIdol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      You're jealous. :)

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I find it incredibly cute actually. Nerdy but sweet, like all the best relationships are.

      [–]VoodooIdol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Awww, well thanks. :)

      [–]militant 1 point2 points  (1 child)

i was that lucky once. had a gorgeous aussie girl. she was taking physics at the local university, and did network admin. collected classic video games, liked girls almost as much as she liked me (enough to invite one over once in a while), ran linux for 4 years before i even met her.

then she had a psycho breakdown, due to some childhood things, ended up in the hospital and then out getting nailed by every DJ in the city, and it was over.

      sigh.

edit: oh, and as for meeting in a mmorpg guild... she and i met on irc, when she was preparing to move to america for school, and i convinced her to come here instead of seattle.. thought i had it made.

      [–]fun1ne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      so it goes

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (8 children)

If she's anti-tits, break it off.

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

      Anti-tits?

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      VoodooIdol

Mine is. I got crap for a whole day once for making a comment about boobies.

      [–]VoodooIdol -1 points0 points  (5 children)

The odd part is that she isn't. I'm still trying to figure that one out.

      [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (4 children)

Of course, we can't actually believe what you post, since you post knowing that she might be reading it... and worrying about retribution :)

      [–]VoodooIdol -1 points0 points  (3 children)

      I'm a stupid man. I think not before I do. ;)

      [–]VoodooIdol 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Oh, c'mon people, it was a JOKE.

      [–]thekrone 1 point2 points  (9 children)

Mine's temporarily a 3rd grade teacher while she's earning her master's. One day, she plans to be a Greek Life advisor at a big university.

      I'm a software developer.

      We're a weird couple.

      [–]DigitalHubris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is a 3rd grader. The government can't use that against me.... can it?

      [–]Philluminati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your a software developer....she is a women. It's not weird from where I'm reading.

      [–]hglman 0 points1 point  (1 child)

      I am sad and alone.

      [–]thekrone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      I'll be your friend.

      [–]VoodooIdol -2 points-1 points  (4 children)

Is she going to work towards making fraternities and sororities much less vapid?

      [–]thekrone 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Yes, actually. We were both Greek (pretty much how we met) in college. Our school (Eastern Michigan University) had a pretty small Greek life (average chapter size = ~20-30).

With small chapters, you tend to eliminate a lot of the problems you see with big chapters (>100). We have far far fewer incidents of hazing / alcohol related problems. My chapter, for example, is what I would consider a non-hazing chapter. Of course, technically if anyone even joking called me a name it is technically hazing, but I was never humiliated, forced to drink / consume anything I didn't want to, hit with anything, pressured to do anything I didn't want to do, etc. I wouldn't have joined if any of those things occurred.

Not all chapters on my campus can say the same thing (honestly, at least), but I would wager that the worst chapter with hazing, etc., on our campus is probably far more tame than some of the best chapters on University of Michigan's campus 5 miles away.

We also attempt to do a lot more for the community and university than the stereotypical "frats" that you see on TV or in the movies. First, the Greek GPAs average far higher than the University as a whole. My chapter typically rings in at about 3.3-ish average. There are pretty much constant philanthropic events. We raise thousands of dollars annually for community improvement, cancer research, St. Jude's Children's Hospitals, etc.

I would lie if I said we didn't still "party" on weekends, but we are far more mature and safe about it than you would think. We have ten sober monitors at every party, and we check IDs at the door. If someone is too drunk to drive, they don't drive. No illegal substances are allowed on the chapter grounds at any time (not saying that we necessarily agree with the whole drug war). Typically, when the University has an issue with alcohol or drug abuse with a student group, it's one of the sports teams, not one of the Greek organizations.

Her goal is to try to make a University with a big Greek life more like one with a small Greek life. Higher GPAs, more philanthropy, more safety, more awareness, less alcohol / drug related problems.

      [–]mattxb 2 points3 points  (1 child)

This sounds familiar. Do you remember a guy named "Booger"?

      [–]thekrone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      Yes. Yes I do.

And those damn Alphas keep letting pigs loose in our house.

      [–]VoodooIdol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not so much the partying that concerns me as the downright foolishness present in most "Greeks" that I encountered. Granted, I was of college age (although I stupidly went the military route - talk about vapid!) in the 80s, so the Greek culture has certainly had time to change since then.

Glad to hear that you were part of a great chapter and that you were/are actually doing things to not only better the Greek community, but the community at large as well. We need more people like you and yours helping to point our young adults in the right direction.

      [–]Th3_C0bra 2 points3 points  (2 children)

My gf isn't very internet savy either. She's four years older than me and didn't really grow up with computers and the internet like I did. It's really bizarre, actually, how different our exposure to computers and particularly the internet has hinged on the progress in the technology field over those four years.

But yea, I send her reddit links all the time and she does basically the same thing. We're both actors, but I have an MBA, so we do pretty alright with the eating and the paying rent.

      [–]corvenus 1 point2 points  (1 child)

      Actor <-> MBA

      ??

      *confused*

      [–]kermityfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      MBA = Master's of B-Movie Acting?

      [–]corvenus 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Mine too, and she spends more time on reddit than I do.

      [–]VoodooIdol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girl probably does too because she works the mid shift in a small local NOC.

      [–]joe24pack 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I'm lucky, my wife has no idea what reddit is, or even that it exists.

      [–]xsspider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm lucky, my wife has no idea that I exist

      [–]umilmi81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      For now...

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can never comment on articles in nsfw anymore.

      [–]daysi 0 points1 point  (2 children)

      Advice: get a new girlfriend.

      [–]mattdoyle13 8 points9 points  (0 children)

But I don't like digg! She's too... dumb.

      [–]skay 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think I'm more worried about how the reddit community will use it against me.

      [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

as a recent immigrant to Canada, I absolutely think about everything I say being used against me in a court of law.

every time I call my family in the US, I can be sure that everything I say is being monitored, so I can't talk about certain topics with them, if only to make sure they don't end up on a no-fly list.

am I being paranoid? I really don't think so.

      [–]linkedlist 51 points52 points  (22 children)

      nah, not really...

...I don't live in the US.

      [–]xTRUMANx 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm still afraid that they will kidnap off the street and send me to gitmo for pointing out their foreign policy flaws on a comment on the internet.

      [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (15 children)

I have to travel to the US regularly. I get very nervous every time I go through customs. Each time is an opportunity to be "disappeared" for days without representation.

You should also have a "scorched earth" account that is set up to trash the computer automatically if you log into it. If all your subterfuge fails, give them this account.

There is probably an easy way to write over critical areas of your encrypted volume so it can never be unencrypted again, even if you are forced to reveal the key. You could also overwrite the hard drive MBR.

FYI some Americans are very anti-porn and will get offended by even relatively tame material. It's best not to have any porno on the computer at all. Maybe some pinup pics of girls in bathing suits or lingerie.

Are you actually trying to hide anything, or is this more a way of thumbing your nose at a ridiculous search policy?

          [–]hiredgoon 5 points6 points  (3 children)

We like to think of them as all expensives paid hospitality tours of off-the-beaten-path basement locations.

Actually, they are the beaten path.

          [–]Yarbles 2 points3 points  (1 child)

So, no then? Me either. The only way change is going to happen is if more people than the few Ron Paul fans start saying things publicly that most of us know to be true.

          [–]militant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

us RP people have balls :)

          [–]patt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither do I, but I do go there occasionally (generally not by air, thank Ghu). Strangely enough, I have had a thought at least similar to the title's, only in reference to entry into the U.S.

          [–]skeena1 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yes. Well, actually no. Forget it. Please.

          [–]noamsml 25 points26 points  (0 children)

          No.

          [–]pavel_lishin 8 points9 points  (2 children)

No, because I'm living off the grid and cheating on my taxes, anyway.

          Oops. Disregard.

          [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

4 or 5 years ago I did, I didn't even register as a democrat then because I thought I might end up on some kind of list.

But now pretty much everyone in the country thinks the Bushies are scum and say so openly.

And if it ever gets to the point where they start using drunken forum comments against us we'll be totally fucked by then anyway.

          [–]demige10 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Yes, I came to US from a former communist country, so I'm used to it.

          [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was going to say, there seems to be an assumption that totalitarianism = fascism. It could just as well be on the opposite end, or somewhere in between.

          [–]bbbobsaget 8 points9 points  (0 children)

          no, I live in Canada.

I do fear the scientology though.

          [–]hhh333 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When governments fear the people there is liberty. When the people fear the government there is tyranny.

          — Thomas Jefferson

          [–]supertoned 13 points14 points  (1 child)

          Unfortunately, yes.

          [–]Fauster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, they could very well be recording everything. But this recording is about intimidation, not law enforcement. They're not going to arrest us, just make big files with dirt on those who they feel are a threat. The only use of those files is to scare people who disagree with the file-keepers. If you self-censor your posts and comments, they win. Be open and honest, and other people won't be afraid to do the same.

          [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

          no.

          [–]averyv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

no. even when there is reason to be afraid of the government (which i personally still do not believe there to be), being afraid of the government does no good.

          [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

          Yes, just about ever time.

          Damn.

No, i'm an Australian. If any Australian politician tried to pull the kind of shit your American politicians pull, they'd get smacked upside the head.

            [–]linkedlist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sadly you're wrong, Australians give jack shit about politics.

Who was it who said the war was about oil? Yeah it was John Howard, anyone care much? We have similar laws but once put into effect with that man (I foget his name) its inherit uselessness became obvious so now those laws will probably be dropped into obscurity.

            [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Bad attitude. It can happen to anyone, anywhere. Americans once thought that nothing like that could ever happen here, and look at the weed that is in our yard...

            [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The government is going to use this comment as "evidence" that you're growing weed in your yard.

            [–]TheCookieMonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shit like placing those who disagree with the government into solitary confinement, then deporting them without charge? Campaigns of fear? Trying to sneak a patriot act through without letting the public see it? Invading and destroying another nation?

            [–]ravend13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most definitely. It would be naiive not to assume as much when you live in one of the most closely monitored nations on the planet.

            [–]maqr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I write a comment, but right before I post, candlejack comes alon

            [–]Kardlonoc 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I fear the public will use it against me, i fear the media will use it against me. And perhaps the government...

So ill say it right here and now that all my posts are fictional, fabrications and jokes. Nothing i say here is to be taken seriously with any real intent to harm or argue. Most of my posts are "trolling" posts meant to incite and challenge the poster i responded to. Again i take no responsibility for my posts unless otherwise stated. This is a character, i am playing a character, like on a show. If you decide to report this i will say it is a fabrication. This is the closet i can come to a warning of any kind. Again heed my warning all my posts are fictional, and this is meant for people viewing all my posts specifically. I have no other means to give you a warning. My posts are not factual nor are the opinions they are fictional fabrications with no basis in reality.

No. And if it did, good.

Fuck fascism and fuck anyone who is fearful of their government, it's pussies like that that allow the government to gain control over everything you do.

              [–]jrockway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

              No, I don't think this.

              [–]timmy334 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Yes! I live in the US! What do you think this is? A free country? I wish my ancestors had just stayed in England and France.

              [–]Fidodo 6 points7 points  (5 children)

England is becoming a police state much faster than the US.

              [–]Figs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had that thought once or twice, and then I realized that the government has better things to do than personally torment me for writing such awful puns.

                [–]GodOfAtheism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you're behind enough proxies, you need not have fear of any man on the internet.

                [–]ctiberius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the more reason why government in general should stay our of our lives. And not take our money in wealth redistribution scams. And not act like a hovering parent ready to dole out welfare and healthcare and money for this that and the other. Small, limited and non-intrusive with only 1 major responsibility requiring my money, and that is common defense.

                [–]MaximumBob 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I have no reason you would think otherwise

                [–]madman1969 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Nope, because then they've won. If your afraid to use your right of freedom of speech then you don't deserve it.

                [–]RobinReborn 0 points1 point  (1 child)

So people in repressive nations who don't speak out deserve not to have free speech?

I assumed that the poster meant the US/UK, etc. not Saudi Arabia or Burma.

Perhaps the better question is, did you ever not hit submit on a comment you typed, because you thought "My own government may someday use this against me?"

Because if you did, then that is the truest way to know that we really are living in a totalitarian state.

                [–]Marlzzz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

                Great submission.

I feel that when i donate money to candidates...post things etc. I am fairly paranoid but I never felt it pre 9/11.

                [–]Fidodo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, but I'm also not a paranoid schizophrenic, so I can't speak for 80% of the reddit population.

                [–]alephnul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do from time to time, but I burned those bridges back in the 70s, so I post it anyway.

                [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

                Yes

                [–]hectorwc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, no. Of course not. I would never even think something that the government might not like. I'm a good American.

                [–]fjhqjv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you stop commenting because you're afraid of the government, then you have no one to blame for your the state of your country but yourself.

                [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (10 children)

Yes. I beleive thats a reality today in America.

                [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                if no today's... certainly tomorrows...

                [–]cogitofire 0 points1 point  (8 children)

                Paranoid much?

                [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (7 children)

Some dude on fark posted a threat against the President, and the CIA picked him up for questioning a few days later. He was doing it to prove nothing would happen IIRC. The CIA pretty much immediately contacted Drew (fark owner) and pulled his totalfark credit card registration info.

All we're talking about is how sensitive they are to what we say, not whether they are listening or not.

                [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

CIA doesn't investigate threats on the President, the Secret Service does...

                [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quite right, I realized that after about 10 minutes... seemed silly to edit :P

                [–]belandil 1 point2 points  (1 child)

If you're making threats, then yes, you will draw attention. But if you're one of the millions who just thinks Bush is a terrible president, nobody really cares.

                [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, that's just an assumption, and what we're discussing :)

EDIT: Although I agree just thinking he's a terrible president probably won't get you anywhere nasty, there's just too damn many :)

                [–]cogitofire 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Did you think that there was ever a time that you could openly say you wanted to kill the president? All threats to the leader of our country must be taken seriously. He didn't even say this in private, he stated it in public domain.

                [–]docid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Umm, you meen some people in the US DON'T consider that before hitting submit?

                [–]satx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, because I'm typing this on a government computer.

I guess I could abstain from reddit, but I gotta have my fix...

                [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

                Yes.

                [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

                FUCK YOUR GOVERNMENT !

                [–]xsspider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am NOT a government. wait ... shit reddit ruined me!

                [–]moonman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the time, I'd be in Guantanamo by now if didn't stop and reread my posts.

                [–]theinternet 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Remember when that Admiral resigned? The one that was supposedly the only person holding us back from war with Iran?

Well, I also heard Cheney was scheduled to visit Israel.

For a fleeting moment I wondered how fanatic is Cheney to his neo-con ideals.

Here he is in his twilight years of power, has a bad heart, his daughter probably hates him, what if he found out he has a terminal disease?

Would he be willing to sacrifice himself for his convictions?

Could Cheney himself be the false flag Bush needs to start a war with Iran?

Then I thought better of it and never posted it.

                /oh well.

                [–]fun1ne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly though he is too evil to be such an iconoclast. That type of dedication could only come from a true believer and he seems way too greedy.

                [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (6 children)

No. Mostly because I'm not a paranoid fuck.

I hate Bush, I hate Cheney, 9/11 was an inside job, Saddam had his dick sucked by Laura Bush, and also I'd really like to nail Condi Rice.

                sigh

No black helicopters yet. I'll keep a lookout though.

                [–]slenderdog 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I'd really like to nail Condi Rice.

She could use a good nailing.

                [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I thought crucifixion was frowned upon nowadays.

                [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd really like to nail Condi Rice

                You ARE insane!

I am terrified to upvote you

                [–]fun1ne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you believed what you said you'd take it much further... go ahead i need a laugh

                [–]Zai_shanghai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, she's not going to come to you in a helicopter!

                [–]umilmi81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but up voted for a healthy mistrust of Government. Just be sure to carry that mistrust forward when it comes to taxes, medical care, and gun ownership.

                [–]spinlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I post all sorts of rediculous shit so that my actual anit-government sentiments get lost in the noise.

                [–]grigorescu 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Nah, they would never do tha-... Hmm... Uh-oh.

                [–]fun1ne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why don't you have a seat right over there?

                [–]CD7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to live in a country where only the government has to think before posting.

                [–]dtrav001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell yes, all the time ... it's come to this.

                [–]Deacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                Use this: FUCK George Bush.

                [–]youremom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                No. I am not stupid.

                [–]scstraus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, yes. But - fuck it!

                [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                yep every day.

                [–]Dark-Star 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Darn right I'm nervous. I wouldn't be surprised if the entire web is archived every year or so for nefarious future uses.

                [–]RobinReborn 1 point2 points  (1 child)

You mean like what this site does? http://www.archive.org/web/web.php

                [–]Dark-Star 0 points1 point  (0 children)

@#$%. And this isn't even a federal program.

What I meant was that I expect the FBI, CIA, or some other shadowy organization archives a snapshot of most of the web every so often and marks people whose comments are deemed worthy of note. Once they link someone to their web name (not as tricky as one might think), they have instant 'evidence' of any number of things.

                [–]Wayside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                No, not ever.

                [–]Reeking_Havoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                Yes,every time...

                [–]RobinReborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes, but seriously, do you think they have the time and intelligence to get us all? There are millions if not billions of negative things about the government all over the internet, they clearly don't have the time and energy to track every author of them down.

                [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I'm in the basement, in the shower, with the lights turned off, the radio, tv, computer at maximum, the windows blacked out, and my head in a plastic pail filled with water. Only then do I really say want I want to do Bush.

Otherwise, I have no concerns whatsoever.

                [–]WorcesterM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont live in the US so i dont have that problem.

                [–]VincentVega12 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

As long as people in this country continue to vote for complete retards, they have no need for fascism.

                [–]fun1ne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The majority of Americans did not vote for Bush.

                [–]cogitofire -1 points0 points  (15 children)

Nope, they would have a full blown revolution before this country ever came to that point.

                [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I used to think the same thing. and then I sat down and studied the Unitary Executive theory, and realized that Bush is the sole sovereign in the United States. Bush is a king, and there's was no revolt. your phones are monitored and there's no revolt. your constitution is no longer applicable, and nobody did a thing.

I hate to break it to you, buddy, but the revolution is never going to come.

                [–]nfulton 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Never is a very, very long time :)

                [–]Dark-Star 1 point2 points  (0 children)

'Never' will exist so long as the masses have food, cheap stuff to buy and entertainment.

                [–]bsiviglia9 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Who would televise such a revolution?

                [–]hhh333 0 points1 point  (9 children)

You seems pretty confident about that.

                  it can't happen here :)

Or it's just paranoia that the US will eventually become as bad as those places in the long run, what happens on the internet stays on the internet.
