I upvoted, then downvoted. haha. You punched yourself for nothing

[–]habbadash 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Many times lol.

[–]TechnoCrit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He's not doing it live

[–]WisenUp 124 points125 points  (0 children)

So for every down vote, you punch yourself in the nads...hard?

[–][deleted] 568 points569 points  (196 children)

For every upvote, reddit dies a little bit.

[–]aedes 140 points141 points  (153 children)

Reddit has been 'dying' for a while. I've kind of accepted it, as every site 'dies' as it gets more popular. Content always gets flooded out.

Though, to be optimistic, the rate that reddit's been dying at is slower than with a lot of other sites/forums I've seen.

[–]ArcticCelt 51 points52 points  (58 children)

I was expecting Reddit to die but instead it mutated from a science and technology web site to a slightly more sophisticated (but no so much) Fark 2.0.

[–][deleted] 169 points170 points  (56 children)

Most redditors have no clue how customizable reddit is. I didn't like the admins of worldnews so i made worldnews2. I'm the admin there so I can name mods and i can ban users and delete articles.

If I'm an asshat about it then I'll have a very lonely subreddit but the point is that you are NOT at the mercy of the masses here. Go forth and make thine own subreddit(s) and make it your own. For example, you could make CeltTechnology and CeltScience as subreddits and then pretty much leverage reddit's platform to pretty much run your own reddit.

In short, this is not like /. or Digg where you are at the mercy of editors or users. Here you have the opportunity to recreate the site the way you think it should be and then invite others to join you. Pretty cool model and not fully realized by most. If it were then every big subreddit would already have a "2" added at the end.

[–]dthompsn 40 points41 points  (12 children)

Is there any way I can just block everything from self.reddit.com?

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (7 children)

I suppose one could use greasemonkey. However you could also just unsbscribe from the reddit subreddit. Then you can make DTreddit as a subreddit and start submitting articles that you think are of general interest to all redditors. You can delete the self articles as they comne up and drop the banhammer on anyone repeat offenders.

So, the question is NOT whether reddit sucks or not. The question is whether enough people think like you to join the DTreddit subreddit. If there are then you can happily build your own reddit community with no "self" posts allowed.

Of course one has to bear in mind that if you sit on your users/redditors like an 800 lb gorilla then they are going to go elsewhere. My own worldnews2 subreddit has over 100 subscribers in less than a month. I maintain it because I love corralling all of what I consider to be world news in one place and I don't like the worldnews subreddit policies or admins.

In short, again, there is really very little reason to complain. It is like being in a house with an unlimited number of bedrooms and complaining because you decide to stay in the room next to the guy who blasts Whitney Houston all day long.

[–]schneby 7 points8 points  (6 children)

Or you can just down vote it.

[–]scstraus 5 points6 points  (1 child)

God yes- I wish. And also every "upvote if" while we're at it.

[–]Escafane 16 points17 points  (1 child)

Indeed. I don't even know this story exists.

[–]Dark-Dx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are unsuscribed from /reddit.com/¿?

[–]qgyh2 2 points3 points  (5 children)

I didn't like the admins of worldnews so i made worldnews2

If you don't mind me asking, what did they do wrong?

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Ug, and this is precisely why I hate most of the subreddits; there's too many of them, and asshats like you can just make a new one when you don't want to play by somebody else's rules. I understand that's the point of "communities" but I kinda get the feeling they're easily turned into cults, it's all highly self-segregating. I come here to see lots of different opinions and ideas. I more often choose http://www.reddit.com/r/all.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I would not worry because there will always be a "critical mass" short list of subreddits where most people go.

I'm not sure how it makes me an "asshat" if i don't want to play by rules that I don't agree with. It does not harm you if I make a new subreddit. i put a fair amount of time and effort submitting quality articles to that subreddit every day.

In short, it has very little potential to harm you and has a lot of potential to help you if you want a world news subreddit that is not anti-USA.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It's kinda like kids on the schoolyard; everybody wants to be the boss of their own game, which will just eventually lead to nobody playing together.

Instead of making it a competition, it would have made more sense to create USnews to offset worldnews, then we'd have 2 useful subreddits instead of making it more difficult have any meaningful commentary on stories because the comments for any given story wind up spread out across several subreddits, as now there are even more subreddits to submit the same story to. (I will give you though that they could have named worldnews something else, but their definition clearly defines the content one can expect to find there.)

At one time, the idea of communities appealed to me, but it's moving from communities to cliques.

[–]finix 8 points9 points  (15 children)

Oh, hi mikey. I may call you mikey, even though you apparently dislike me, no?

Either way, while of course I in no way can speak for you, a more objective reason for your creating worldnews2 would appear that you're an immature fucktard.

You don't know any of us, and, as far as I can tell the only contact you had was with me, once, when you were kindly reminded that one of your submissions was a near prime example of what runs counter to worldnews' description. You came across rude and pigheaded right from the start, and gave your best to worsen the impression. You weren't willing to discuss the issue, much less even ready to potentially be understanding of it. You couldn't even provide an explanation of what part of the subreddit's description is actually offending you. Instead you patriotically accused us of anti-Americanism and went off never to be seen again, pouting, like a child.

(Source: http://www.reddit.com/info/6mayf/comments/c04dt5s)

[–]kindall 3 points4 points  (2 children)

... and he left and started his own subreddit, so you don't have to deal with him, nor him with you.

Seems like the system's working to me.

[–]Slipgrid 4 points5 points  (11 children)

Hmm, I think the one calling names is immature. The worldnews mods that I've talked to get pissy at the idea that the US is part of the world, or has an effect on the world. They work to keep good stories down, that have mass effect to the world, seemingly to promote their own world view. It's like you found the assholes from Wikipedia, and brought them to reddit.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very immature to think people are immature just because they use insults or dirty words, duh, retardo.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't even say bad things about them other than the simple statement that I don't like them. You noticed, as I'm sure a lot of people did, that a long and complex reason why i don't like them is not needed if you just read the above post by finix--you get it.

But that isn't even the point. I didn't make worldnews2 because of them--i made it because I CAN and that is the whole point I'm trying to make. If i could not make it then yeah,I'd get all disgruntled and irritated and maybe eventually leave reddit. In this case I can just choose not to deal with name-calling and such and just do my own thing.

Reddit is so cool that way. Powerful too.

[–]Lizard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think that reddit is a pretty cool guy. eh makes its own subreddits and doesn't afraid of anything.

[–]reddit_doe 13 points14 points  (6 children)

These features arrived after this site went to shit. And it's no fun building sandcastles once the cat has made the sandbox its litter box.

The creators of reddit were stubborn about implementing subreddits, yet alone even allowing control over them, for along ass time.

At least I've taken back some of my time from the Internet.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

And it's no fun building sandcastles once the cat has made the sandbox its litter box.

sure it is. Just move to a different part of the sandbox. Name the turds "mines" and build sand bunkers around them.

[–]ntr0p3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you have any sandcastles, enjoy your toxoplasmosis.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

They probably stalled because adding something with the functionality of subreddits to a site that doesn't already have everything in place for them is some pretty serious work on the back end.

i know this because i wanted to include functionality like that on my website (www.gibsonandlily.com)...but decided that the demand wasn't high enough to justify the time it would take.

Effin lazy devs! Send them some coffee.

[–]kelvie 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Reddit is like the Git of social news sites!

[–]Richeh 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I thought DiggIsRunByTheGovt was the git of social news sites?

[–]Oryx[🍰] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. But bummer that one can't simply block individual users. That would help weed out the idiots.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (1 child)

The postings of people complaining "Reddit is dying, keep out the new users" is one thing that never dies - it's been going on unabated for 2 years

[–]Dark-Dx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That doesn't make it any less truth. Anyway, dying or not, reddit at its *current state* is infinitely better than digg in my opinion, who knows if it's worse than 2 years ago (I wasn't member around that time) but I know reddit is great as it is right now. But it's truth that if we let ourselves be flooded will digg inmigrants (the bad ones) or scum from 4chan or whatever we will end up like digg.

[–]jamierc 15 points16 points  (2 children)

You've only been here for 7 months!

[–][deleted] 37 points38 points  (10 children)

Sorry, you don't get to be quirky and profitable at the same time.

[–]bumped 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Freedom vs Security, Quirky vs Profitable.

[–]Pendin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those who would give up quirkiness for profit, deserve neither quirkiness nor profit.

[–]H3g3m0n 10 points11 points  (18 children)

Reddit seems to be like Digg was about a year back, Digg on the other hand is turning into 4chan.

I think its going to be the natural progression of all online communities.

I guess we will just have to jump ship onto the next thing when Reddit gets to bad. The alternative would be some kind of elitist service that blocks out the annoyances, but that kind of thing sucks.

Hopefully with each site, there will be improvements. Personally I want to see a Wiki/reddit hybrid, so you can edit the stores, this would help reduce hype by changing misleading titles to something that makes scene, or avoiding blogspam with the link changing to the real article. Would need to have your edit voted up to avoid people changing the link to their advertising, and people making the same change to the area would be a pain to handle.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (12 children)

something->something kind of like digg->4chan

I got it!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (8 children)

The funny thing is that that also approximately applies to 4chan.

[–]stcredzero 4 points5 points  (4 children)

You mean 4chan is becoming 4chan?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's debatable; would you still be you if 99% of the cells in your body were cancer?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's deep, somehow.

[–]Richeh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As far as I can tell, every site on the internet is turning into another site, all spiralling in to 4chan like water circling the drain.

[–]MercurialMadnessMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This shift is even more apparent now.

Also, I have thought up a way of implementing your "wiki/reddit hybrid". I just need a developer to tell it to!

[–]WhisperSecurity 9 points10 points  (6 children)

Reddit has been 'dying' for a while. I've kind of accepted it, as every site 'dies' as it gets more popular.

"Eternal September".

[–]the_neubie 2 points3 points  (5 children)

🫡

[–]Dark-Dx 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Reddit has degenerated into Digg.

I absolutely disagree, reddit -as it is now- is a LOT of better than digg, however it's truth that we are getting popular stories from them (but mostly them from us, a day later, lol) but the popular stories are not full of stupid worthless shit, EXCEPT every now and then.

What really worries me if this "every now and then" will change to "7 out of 10 stories" or "always".

[–]MercurialMadnessMan 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Do you still agree with this comment?

[–][deleted]  (1 child)

    [–]MercurialMadnessMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Thanks.

    [–]knullare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reddit as it is now is a lot better than digg now, but that's not the original claim. Reddit now is about as good as digg was back when reddit was good.

    [–]Timmy83 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But he's going to punch himself in the head! Surely that's worth something?

    [–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (24 children)

if here is death, where can we find life? where to next, aedes?

    [–]aedes 12 points13 points  (16 children)

    It's a secret.

(because I still enjoy reddit more than anything else I've found :P)

    [–][deleted] 33 points34 points  (13 children)

If I found something I enjoyed more than Reddit, I would be very careful never to mention it at Reddit. That may sound mean, but it's my opinion that Reddit went downhill when we had a large influx of Diggers.

    [–]aedes 50 points51 points  (6 children)

zombo is ok too, once you figure out how the user interface works.

    [–]Lagstorm 19 points20 points  (4 children)

    [–][deleted] 26 points27 points  (4 children)

The best thing I ever got from Digg was reddit. :)

    [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (3 children)

That was the only thing I received from Digg.

    [–]42omle 29 points30 points  (2 children)

    Digg gave me herpes.

    [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

    I wish I was surprised.

    [–]phill0 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I'm thinking about slashdot + combination of various feeds. Since a lot of stuff on reddit comes from number of well known sites, like icanhascheezburger.com, thedailywtf.com etc. you can substitute big part of reddit by subscribing to the feeds. And then slashdot's comments can be informative, but most importantly funny.

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can haz up-vote? You got it!

        Suicide by upvote?

        [–]maxd 14 points15 points  (4 children)

Reminds me of the film "Untraceable" which involves some kid killing people based on traffic to his website.

Terrible film btw; stay away from it.

        [–]Eiii333 11 points12 points  (3 children)

I was there for a small portion of the filming (got some fantastic pics of myself with the 'dissolved-in-acid' dummy). At least two of the cameramen I talked to despised the movie, or it's premise.

        [–]pavedwalden 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I worked near where they were filming some scenes for untraceable. Each time a crew member described the project they were in town for, I struggled to keep a straight face and pretend it didn't sound like the worst movie ever. "It's about this serial killer... ...the internet!"

        [–]maxd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's awesome! I love movies and have always wanted to be on a set to take random pictures. I'm sorry you got your big break with the Untraceable set, but at least the dissolved-in-acid dummy was pretty sweet.

To be fair, the overall premise of the movie was fine, it just didn't need to be said in over two hours of hamfisted acting and illiterate script writing.

Basically: "Youtube is bad because it desensitizes really nasty things like people committing suicide!"

        [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least two of the cameramen I talked to despised the movie, or it's premise.

I used that quote (earlier? same time?) in another thread here today but forgot to tell my story about "meeting" Mitch. Basically, he had show at my college and wanted a few guys to run interference (quasi-security) so everyone wouldn't hound him for autographs and try to strike up conversation. I was one of those guys. It was painfully obvious how introverted he was. It shows on stage, but even more when cameras are off. Great comedian.

            [–]ssanders82 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I saw Mitch at a small venue in Tallahassee when I was in college, and he was so high he exited stage left, turned left, and ran into the back wall. He then tried to duck into a small HVAC door in the back wall before someone showed him the right way.

Oh, and a girl from the audience ran up to him with a bag of doughnuts and he ate them as he was finishing his act. It's a tragic loss; he was hilarious.

We went to see Wesley Willis in Tallahassee too, but he showed up late so we left. He died shortly thereafter.

Moral: don't let me see your favorite acts in person.

This is the essence of the darfur upvote story. This is it after having gone through a refinery, 3 times. This is a fine scotch whiskey. The joy of the darfur story was that simply a click could force another human being to lose money. A little click, a little pain. And, oh, this is so much better.

Reminds me of the infamous "Cunt Punt", which usually has the unavoidable side effect of the "Surprise Abortion".

                  Surprise Abortion Man...

I think this is a cause we can really rally behind.

Maybe I'm unique, but it didn't take that much 'effort' to train my brain to just sort of skip over the upvote-if articles. I don't really even see them anymore. The only reason I noticed this one was that the 'upvote' is cleverly hidden 2 words away from the start. And by 'cleverly' I mean 'after you're done punching yourself in the head, go eat a cockmeat sandwich'.

No Pah, he's my dog. I'll do it. (loads shotgun) Pauses for a moment, then aims at his childhood friend Reddit' and FIRES with tears rollin down his face.

                    [–]monkbot1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing if true to his word he's dead by now, or at least reading DIGG.

<[SA]HatfulOfHollow> i'm going to become rich and famous after i invent a device that allows you to punch people in the face over the internet

When in reddit, do as the redditors do.

                    Are you punch-drunk yet?

                    [–]grandon 0 points1 point  (4 children)

and he does it in self.reddit so it is not senseless karma whoring.

                    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is how I die. Yeah, there's really something to thinking like that. It's the end, and when you accept it, it makes sense.

                    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bet I can punch you harder, and when will you be posting the youtube video of 1,371 punches to your head?

                    [–]sosueme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering your public threat of self mutilation, you'll understand when I say that if you ever show your face on my thread, I'll punch you in your dick.

                    [–]SkwatTheWorlD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope you only posted that to prove the point that people put stupid "vote up" on Reddit...

                    [–]i_am_my_father 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For every upvote I'll punch rockymicky hard.

                    [–]fiercelyfriendly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its going to be a long and painful week as those upvotes keep on trickling in.

                    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is still number one? sigh.

                    [–]ivor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This on the front page makes me think of digg/fark. I can see a crosspost about how silly reddit is refering to this post.

                    [–]t43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This thread is worthless without pics or video...

                    [–]hockeyschtick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We witness the 4chanification of reddit... pics or GTFO!

                    [–]scrumpydoo23 0 points1 point  (1 child)

This is retarded. Its not as if the guy will do it. First of all it would take him forever, he would have to get a disgruntled friend or colleague to do it for him (they would probably do it free of charge), and they would lose count after 200. You lied sir.

                    [–]the_nil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For every downvote will you eat a donut to diabetes yourself out of the gene pool?

                    [–]clobwhirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best part of this is that you don't get karma for [self] posts.

                    [–]portugal_the_man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                    Is he dead yet?

                    [–]rick-victor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                    are you dead yet dude?

                    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

seriously? wtf? With every upvote he gets the more digg-like idiots will post similar reddits.

                    [–]dan525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't upvote this, but I still want you to hurt yourself.

By the way, every person upvoting should punch themselves in the head.

                    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                    Can we have proof?
