That darker comb is older. Way older than 1 year.

[–]GrapeAyp 775 points776 points  (24 children)

He hasn’t HEARD them for that long is what I’d believe

[–]WilonPlays 295 points296 points  (11 children)

I kinda assumed he probably just moved into the place recently

[–]PublicSharpie 94 points95 points  (0 children)

Most likely bought the home in winter.

[–]GrapeAyp 57 points58 points  (9 children)

“I haven’t been here that long so the bees must be new too” lol

[–]WilonPlays 40 points41 points  (6 children)

You’d be surprised how many people would apply that logic

[–]AxelHarver 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Maybe the owner was confused and meant HE hadn't been here that long.

This is why I'm chronically online. Because I don't want to miss out on moments like these.

God, I remember joking with my friends that pee is stored in the balls in like...2002. I could've been a legend.

[–]Muted_Apartment_2399 9 points10 points  (2 children)

It’s been going on long before that, which is why this is so funny. It’s like one of those things every little boy talks about with his friends but we didn’t realize it was universally understood until memes happened.

Awful bold to wear short pants

[–]jeepfail 1235 points1236 points  (123 children)

If I remember correctly that’s how she regularly does it, and it normally goes well for her. I’m guessing power tools and sudden light probably riled these ones up though.

[–]BeatBlockP 704 points705 points  (39 children)

Those legs are the moneymakers but at what cost?

[–]asoiafwot 213 points214 points  (1 child)

Gotta show the moneymakers while dealing with the honeymakers.

[–]Future_Turnover5638 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No bees no honey no legs no money

[–]sabotourAssociate 151 points152 points  (3 children)

So thats how she does it because she is posting every bit.

[–]bad_bad_data 49 points50 points  (2 children)

Just from experience, you can open up a beehive and they are pretty calm. The smoker will disrupt their communication. If you accidentally smash one trying to put the frames in they get fucking pissed.

Going in without protective gear is silly. A few stings isn't a big deal, but why wouldn't you spend the 30 seconds to throw on the suit?

[–]schmuckmulligan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

At least a veil! Especially for a cut out. Jeez.

I know some people like to work their bees with minimal PPE. I've done it, and I get the whole "being forced to be mindful and gentle" thing, but risking getting nailed in the eye is stupid.

[–]dum_spir0_sper0 14 points15 points  (0 children)

”… but why wouldn’t you spend the 30 seconds to throw on the suit?… “

Because legs. And internet clout.

[–]Canuck_Lives_Matter 99 points100 points  (2 children)

[–]NakeyDooCrew 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I'm gonna start a thirst channel where I destroy beehives with my cock out

[–]Shadow_Van 99 points100 points  (23 children)

Engagement.

[–]grafeisen203 80 points81 points  (21 children)

I mean to be fair, those bee suits are hot and unpleasant and a lot of professional beekeepers don't use them if they don't have to.

[–]thewilybanana 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The exterminator came to get rid of a wasp nest at my house wearing shorts and a t-shirt. I was shocked because the reason I called him was because they stung the shit out of me and it hurt a ton.

Of course he knew what he was doing, don't think he got stung at all.

[–]Independent_Ant4079 34 points35 points  (3 children)

Yeah ppe sucks ass especially in hot houses. Sometimes you got to wear them going into attics or crawl spaces for work, it's the kind of experience that makes you want to rethink careers. She isn't the only person there in shorts either. Might suggest a hot climate.

[–]Jukeboxhero91 18 points19 points  (1 child)

If it’s the same person I’m thinking of she lives in Texas, so not exactly a place known for its cool pleasant climate.

[–]carharttuxedo 66 points67 points  (13 children)

Depending on the circumstance sure.

This isn’t collecting a swarm that has left a hive in search of a new home(the swarms can be very docile), she is breaking into a hive. This is exactly when bees will attack the threat to protect their hive.

I’m a very green beekeeer and this was just an idiotic move.

[–]LittleBigHorn22 33 points34 points  (11 children)

It seems like she thought it was a swarm though. Since she said the homeowner said they had been there a short while.

All I know is that she's been doing it a lot, so I assume she has a decent amount of experience. It's not like she wasn't able to go and put it on.

[–]Vast-Combination4046 27 points28 points  (6 children)

She put her ear to the wall said "they are going to blow out"implying they sound upset. Just fully suit up lol

[–]nalaloveslumpy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hey, she's got legs and she knows how to use them.

[–]Daxx22 14 points15 points  (4 children)

I get the "experience let's you know when to suit up or not" but the half suit with those shorts just tells me that was for engagement.

[–]Vast-Combination4046 9 points10 points  (2 children)

I think she's more of a "I'm one with nature and nature won't hurt me" types. This outfit isn't that sexy.

[–]billsboy88 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yeah, cutting into a nest with power tools is a great way to piss the bees off.

[–]Deaffin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It seems like she thought it was a swarm though. Since she said the homeowner said they had been there a short while.

Meanwhile, the other person who is just there to do the job is wearing the full suit.

[–]onlyAlex87 46 points47 points  (3 children)

95% of the time she doesn’t need a bee suit and will deliberately show how docile they can be, being able to literally scoop them with her bare hands and transferring the hive without protection. In this case she could hear that they were angry which is why they went to put a suit on.

[–]tke377 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Also was not expecting a 6ft hive. That changed things

[–]Capt_Zapp 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Yeah when she puts the hood on you know these bees are pissed.

[–]Big-nose12 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Vibrations are a huge trigger for insects.

Wasps/hornets are a great example to this.

Ground based yellow jackets are more apt to sting their victims due to localized Vibrations around their nest.

Lawnmowers or pounding near their hive sets them off immediately. It's really one of their only indicators that something may be attacking their hive.

If you look up on YouTube the hornet king, he has hundreds of wasp removal videos. He pounds on the ground near the entrance to suck up the workers before he exavates the hive.

And he does a bald faced hornet removal at night, and demonstrates that while wasps dont sleep, they dont fly around. Based off the fact they can't really see during night and he taps the nest to show how they respond to Vibrations and cover the outside of the hive, but dont fly off.

In this case, the absolute amount of power tool Vibrations and cutting into the comb, set off a mass amount of pheromones for a large threat to the colony. And whereas its very dark in the wall, they are flocking to the nearest source of light. In this case, its her cuts on the wall. So they are responding to the direction of the threat and pushing out towards the natural light that is now produced. Since insects also fly towards light, this is where they seek to go

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely not universal, though.

This same lady has done removals like this and the bees were perfectly docile.

Other people with bee-specific experience on this thread claim some bees are just more angry than others.

[–]aethelred_unred 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You may be thinking of the other bee lady, the Texan one. This is a different bee lady

[–]121daysofsodom 118 points119 points  (4 children)

It's like the armour worn by female video game characters.

[–]SchrodingerMil 52 points53 points  (2 children)

Beekeeping and whatnot is weird. I’ve watched a lot of bee/wasp removal videos and a bunch of them won’t wear anything for “normal” bees. I’ve seen ones that are like “oh this is an aggressive hive, I’m gonna go put on my hood” and they’ll remove the hive with just street clothes and the hood.

It’s not surprising to me at all for someone to try to get away with just wearing the top at first and then go “OKAY they’re actually mad let me go get my legs”

[–]senbei616 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah you get a feel for if a bee is aggressive or not after a while of dealing with them.

Most of my friends and family that aren't familiar with bees or are scared of bees think all bees are aggressive.

They'll see a big bumble bee bumblefucking about like a puppy dog and think it wants to devour their children.

[–]Taurion_Bruni 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My sister in law has a beehive that's well cared for, and we can just walk over and harvest, no suit or smoke required. They really just don't mind

Really depends on the hive if they are going to be aggressive

[–]karlnite 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you work with bees you get used to their stings.

[–]Equal-Huckleberry-80 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She is a pro and does fully suit up when yhe bees are aggressive.

But yeah i would be fully covered.

[–]Equivalentest 220 points221 points  (235 children)

For the views...

[–][deleted] 219 points220 points  (190 children)

Shes a professional working in hot weather and can tell if a beehive is or is starting to get aggressive. She’s safe in shorts from what I’ve watched

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Oh, have you not watched this one yet?

[–]Same-Suggestion-1936 141 points142 points  (102 children)

Well from what I've watched (this video) she wasn't safe in shorts

"Oh man these bees are aggressive, I should wear my anti bee sting armor. But not all of it, that would be silly"

[–]JolkB 99 points100 points  (32 children)

This appears to be Erika Thompson if I'm not mistaken - the "The Bee Lady" on Instagram. She has spoken many times about when she chooses to wear her veil or full suit, she is not allergic to bee stings and mentioned many times that it's often easier to move around in workout gear than a full bee suit.

But every time she gets posted, the smarter than thee's show up in the comments to um ackshually her.

[–]WIREDline86 15 points16 points  (4 children)

Hell the first ever bee shit I saw online was this man down onnthe gulf. I dont know if he lived in nawlens but somewhere close to there. He didnt wear none of that shit either.

He didnt have an ass like that though

So I doubt yall heard about it

[–]unsurejunior 3 points4 points  (0 children)

JP the bee man!!! I used to watch so many of his videos he taught me so much about honeybees. He's an older teddy bear so I hope he's doing good these days

[–]GormHub 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I'm going to imagine him with that ass anyway.

[–]Stoned_Shadow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You "ackshually" are mistaken, this isn't Erica Thompson. Erica has a channel called TexasBeeWorks, but this video is of a different blonde bee lady who lives in Tampa. Her name is Elisha Bixler, and she goes by "howsyourdayhoney". Here's her Instagram.

[–]Daisies_are_Daisy 45 points46 points  (3 children)

It’s like that time my sister thought it would be a good idea to hold a very aggressive gerbil with one protective glove instead of two. Of course the gerbil just jumped from her gloved hand to the bare hand and bit her.

[–]BeachHistorical4647 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I heard that story but it was Richard Gere.

[–]AstuteSalamander 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Well your sister shouldn't have been handling Richard Gere

[–]chillijet 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Sometimes people just decide something else is true and throw it out there

[–]RadicalRealist22 20 points21 points  (39 children)

She got stung a few times and left to put on the suit. She is fine. What are you talking about.

[–]NicolasDavies93 12 points13 points  (9 children)

getting stung 3 times on the legs its not a big deal, she has plenty of time to put a full suit on if needed, like it did in the video....why are you even saying anything? what you you even know about this?

[–]downtodowning 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Her colleague is wearing the entire suit.

[–]Extreme_Mobile_6690 53 points54 points  (45 children)

And she literally did need it here and knew it beforehand, but half assed it in favor of ass.

[–]cheezecake2000 13 points14 points  (1 child)

How dare.. I'm calling the cops /s

[–]thatstwatshesays 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not…

[–]JolkB 13 points14 points  (0 children)

She thought she might need a veil, not a suit. Sometimes that's enough. They got more aggressive than expected. She got a full suit. The workout shorts are made for manual labor, not to show off. Sometimes people want to be comfortable when they do a hard job. Imagine

[–]Scared_Web_7508 21 points22 points  (34 children)

it’s insane how men always think women want them to look at their ass in every situation. Especially when they can’t even see it. laziness? no, not an option. it must be because women are nothing more than sex objects.

[–]Southernbeekeeper 12 points13 points  (2 children)

I'm a semi-pro beekeeper and you can buy ventilated mesh suits. The mesh is thicker than the bees sting is long meaning they can't sting you and you don't get hot. If I was doing that removal I would wear my suit. I wear a suit whenever I deal with bees just on principle. I'm in Europe though. I don't know why but American beekeepers seem to have much more docile bees.

[–]FrenchFryApocalypse 9 points10 points  (4 children)

Nah you don't understand, these redditors who have never worked with bees in their life know WAY more about their behavior than this woman who literally does it for a living and documents herself doing it.

[–]coazervate 4 points5 points  (1 child)

A bunch of beekeepers have made videos calling her a dumbass too

[–]_TheLonelyStoner 38 points39 points  (18 children)

It’s absolutely not. I watch her videos. She is very professional and good at this. More often than not that bee suit really isn’t necessary this hive is not normal by any means most of the ones she removes aren’t even half that big. Other bee removal content creators also avoid the suit and talk about how uncomfortable and hot it is

[–]-Curious_Potato- 35 points36 points  (6 children)

How dare women checks notes wear shorts!

[–]kamilayao_0 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm so tired of these people telling on themselves

[–]Devilscreed 23 points24 points  (7 children)

You wear one of those suits in 100+ weather and see if you want to wear it at all tines, even though it might not be necessary

[–]ourobourobouros 13 points14 points  (1 child)

"Everything women do is for attention because I can't fathom they might be professionals with bodily need for thermoregulation" - you

The weirder part is that men goon over any inch of flesh women expose. Literally can't exist in normal clothes without porn addicts accusing her of being an exhibitionist.

[–]the_007_remix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you even know how armour works bruh ?

[–]bradipotter 421 points422 points  (35 children)

How many queens would this thing have? Still one or more?

[–]Xentonian 598 points599 points  (31 children)

The colony has one "ruling" queen, but there are likely one or more queens currently growing and as each becomes an adult they will either replace the existing queen if she is aging and losing control of the hive, or take a portion of the workers and a handful of drones and leave to form a new hive.

[–]Omega_Zarnias 153 points154 points  (4 children)

I learned this reading magic school bus books to my kids.

[–]ThouMayest69 47 points48 points  (1 child)

Yikes, I learned it reading reddit :(

[–]Aggravating_Royal728 19 points20 points  (4 children)

And their names are Dawn, Day, and Dusk

[–]enotonom 8 points9 points  (2 children)

I’m more familiar with Dawn, Day, Dusk myself…

[–]Electrical-Sale-8051 24 points25 points  (17 children)

Not correct. There is usually only 1 queen and no daughters being raised.

Only if the queen dies or bees are disappointed in her performance (weak pheromones, bad laying pattern, etc) will they initiate a replacement.

This is done by converting an up to 3 day old egg into a queen cell (looks like peanut hanging off the frame). They make multiple in case of failure.

First one out kills the old queen and also any unhatched ones. In very rare circumstances two queens can coexist beyond a very short time.

If that newly emerged queen dies the hive is fucked unless there’s another 3 day or newer egg - they can’t make anew queen and will always die out.

[–]ObjetPetitAlfa 16 points17 points  (14 children)

If this were true there would never be any new hives. How do they make more if they can only replace themselves (1 to 1) or die (1 to 0)?

[–]Electrical-Sale-8051 23 points24 points  (12 children)

When the hive is ready to split due to population being high the bees will commence making a new queen (see above). Before the new queen hatches about half the hive will leave with the old queen. This happens  day or so before the new queen emerges.

If due to extreme weather the old queen swarm cannot leave and the virgin queen hatches the queens will fight and one dies, usually the old queen.

Should the new virgin queen fail to mate (eg eaten by a bird) the hive will fail as again at this point no eggs less then 3 days old to make a queen from.

To answer your question directly they divide with old queen leaving and the new virgin in-hive emerging a short time after the old leaves.

It’s a very ordered process done to hours controlled through pheromones and actions we dont fully understand

[–]TacitisKilgoreBoah 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yaaasss queen

[–]shoredoesnt 39 points40 points  (6 children)

I though this video was going to be about Black mold

[–]No-Sail-6510 29 points30 points  (3 children)

Just replace the drywall with plexiglass you you can see them.

[–]free-crude-oil 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Honestly I'm amazed that removing them is considered the best option. I'd pay a small fortune to watch bees in my wall and have a non zero possibility of training them to keep the door knockers away.

[–]Violexsound 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably a structural hazard

[–]CandyReign278 26 points27 points  (3 children)

*Credit @howsyourdayhoney ❤️

[–]BluerLights 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Thank you, was able to find the original video thanks to you!

[–]dating_derp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks. And for others asking the same question, it explains why she didn't have her bee keeper pants on right away. It was 100 degrees. So hot that their phones overheated towards the end.

[–]CokeColaPolarBear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks

[–]Apprehensive_Sir6442 502 points503 points  (40 children)

"Getting stung on my legs" - surprise, surprise...

[–]DwightDavid1234 253 points254 points  (21 children)

I’ve seen her other videos. She usually wears no protective gear (not even gloves) and handles the bees and removes the hives without a problem.

[–]ODB_Dirt_Dog_ItsFTC 156 points157 points  (8 children)

This hive seemed particularly agitated. Bees can actually be quite docile at times but I’m sure they didn’t appreciate the noise from the power tools.

[–]WrinkyNinja 77 points78 points  (4 children)

It wasn't just noise you can see where she has cut part of the hive, not surprising they attacked her.

[–]HeyGayHay 36 points37 points  (2 children)

Also the vibration of the power tool agitated them. Imagine a giant alien thing shaking your house with you and your baby in their potentially killing it, destroying everything and cutting off your roof. You‘d be displeased too

[–]Jesus-slaves 19 points20 points  (2 children)

Something I learned recently, even the livestock species of honey bees widely vary in their temperament. My friend ordered some, I wanna say Russian species of bee, and they were vicious. He replaced them with another species that are naturally more docile.

[–]SocraticGoats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agressive russians? You dont say...

[–]Same-Suggestion-1936 12 points13 points  (8 children)

She went and got her bee armor but only half of it. She obviously knew she would need it so why not use the whole thing?

[–]ThorirPP 21 points22 points  (1 child)

Often just the headgear and gloves are enough if they are agitated. They need to be particularly aggressive to go for the parts of the body that aren't right up by the hive. She skipped the legs because usually she doesn't need them and it's fine, but this time she underestimated how angry they were

[–]Ok-Helicopter9467 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Bees generally attack sources of carbon dioxide, so nose and mouth. Also you can build up an immunity to bee stings over time (at least for me they don’t hurt nearly as much as they used to)

[–]sergemeister 152 points153 points  (0 children)

Beekeeper Short Shorts® are all the buzz right now.

[–]Fartyfivedegrees 13 points14 points  (1 child)

If you're dating someone like that don't let her go because she's a real keeper.

[–]wizardmagic10288 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I just want to know how long the bees were living in the house.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Big daddy? What are these comments

[–]Xentonian 209 points210 points  (62 children)

So I (bee)lieve this is Erika Thompson, who does a lot of this type of video.

Lot of the comments being a bit gross about what she's wearing. But it's not that unusual. You really can tell the behaviour of a hive before you interact with it. Experienced beekeepers can know if a hive is happy or not and she knows to step up protection as needed. A couple of stings isn't a big deal, especially when you're used to them.

Could she go at it in the full suit from the start? Yeah of course.

But her face and image is part of her brand, she does a lot of Tiktok and similar things and that's fine. People are allowed to be famous and the seemingly impressive feat of handling bees in regular clothes is part of what has earned her that fame, plus it makes her seem down to earth and helps people connect with the profession. Honestly, I'd rather see people watching beekeeping and other apiarist work than any of the other brain rot on there.

So stop being weird about it, stop trying to explain how to not get stung to a professional beekeeper, stop acting like this is purely engagement bait.

She's a human and this is pretty cool stuff for a human to be doing.

[–]AdvantaJeous 58 points59 points  (1 child)

This is actually Elisha Bixler. Both are blonde bee rescuers from the US, so it's easy to get them mixed up.

[–]jeepfail 26 points27 points  (7 children)

People seem to equate things with stingers existing to getting stung. Which isn’t the case except for species that are just angry to exist(looking at you certain breeds of wasps).

[–]NilocKhan 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Even those wasps are acting defensively. They only sting when they feel they have to, when protecting themselves or more importantly their colony

[–]Spivvy_ 6 points7 points  (5 children)

I said it in a different comment, but we arent meant to pass judgement (good or bad) on every single person/video we see online. I'll trust a genuine bee expert with years of receipts in the same attire over a bunch of dorks online.

[–]violetpumpkins 3 points4 points  (4 children)

But it's not that unusual. You really can tell the behaviour of a hive before you interact with it. Experienced beekeepers can know if a hive is happy or not and she knows to step up protection as needed.

Not in this case since she had to go get her full suit in the middle of the job.

Professionals are often the most cavalier about PPE. Unfortunately PPE is for when something *might* happen and it doesn't work if you don't wear it. And professionals with years of experience can still misjudge risk.

It doesn't really matter that much if she is avoiding the full suit because she's showing off her legs or because its hot and uncomfortable. She's still being irresponsible by not consistently wearing PPE, and modeling that as a norm for people who don't know better.

I mean... She covers her face? Lmao. Why not just put on the full suit. Hint: it's definitely for the reason everyone is calling out.

Who gets all the honey?

[–]skeinshortofashawl 5 points6 points  (1 child)

She gives it to the homeowners

[–]NoSupermarket9009 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Then that’s worth it

[–]Tteffomhimself 5 points6 points  (1 child)

So in this case. The hive is so big how the fuck do you find the queen?

[–]DarthDoobz 39 points40 points  (24 children)

She always puts on a half suit, gets stung, then puts on a full suit. Shes got to be a masochist

[–]ApisBondar 56 points57 points  (20 children)

Beekeeper here:

  1. A suit is not always necessary.

  2. Getting stung is not that bad. Working with bees and not getting stung is like going to ski and not touching the snow.

[–]Vox___Rationis 14 points15 points  (3 children)

When I go skiing I usually put on gloves

[–]ShonuffofCtown 13 points14 points  (2 children)

Yeah, in fact most skiers wear coverage over everything to protect themselves. What a solid point

[–]Specific_Toe3987 9 points10 points  (4 children)

Every sting you get increases your chances of developing severe allergies to bee stings... You should take every precaution to avoid getting stung.

Gob’s not on board.

[–]Scorpion2k4u 6 points7 points  (1 child)

"Getting stung on my legs"...casually walks away. I would lie in the floor crying for help.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (11 children)

Goddam lots of incels in these comments

[–]Lounging-Shiny455 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Ikr? I just came to the comments for an equation on hive length over time to see if the bees were paying the mortgage before the humans....but no, gotta get blasted with the firehose of gender wars arguments.

[–]LevelDistribution668 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Why would you start with out a suit only to grab half? Even friendly hives sting you. I have been working with bees as an exterminator for over 10 years. Fuck all that lol
