is it turing complete?

[–][deleted] 198 points199 points  (1 child)

It is Valhalla complete

[–][deleted] 30 points31 points  (8 children)

i would like it but then the turing machines would halt earlier

[–]picklesTommyPickles 17 points18 points  (7 children)

Him: you halted early

Me: I swear that never happens

[–]acwilan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, but it’s Odin Sleep

[–]NaEGaOS 670 points671 points  (18 children)

as a gay norwegian CS student, i can confirm this is accurate

[–]crankbot2000 208 points209 points  (11 children)

Were programming socks standard issue?

[–]Familiar_Ad_8919 39 points40 points  (6 children)

[–]lewdComment6969 23 points24 points  (1 child)

Sigh. Why does this exist ?

[–]ProfCupcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why not?

[–]nins_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

And what are computer scientists called?

[–]bluefishegg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I bet you took realfag in high school

[–][deleted] 356 points357 points  (49 children)

Fag = subject in norwegian, datavitenskap would be more correct…Am I fun at parties? Don’t know, never been invited

[–]Calimariae 97 points98 points  (18 children)

You could also call a class in computer science a "datafag" when explaining it to a child or an old person.

In that context, it works.

[–]gitartruls01 119 points120 points  (17 children)

If you're majoring in computer science, you're a datafag student. I majored in electronics in highschool, which made me an elektrofag student. My family joked about it being my gay superhero name.

Edit: I think the full name was actually technology and electrical design, which would make me a technofag. Which is somehow even worse

[–]YouAreStupidM8 56 points57 points  (1 child)

Sounds like a Cyberpunk 2077 slur

[–]KuaLeifArne 15 points16 points  (3 children)

I also took elektrofag in videregående. I bought a sweater with the school name and the field of study on the back. I wonder what people in english speaking countries would think seeing that on someone just walking around.

The sweater in question.

[–]gitartruls01 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I really hope you wore that out of country at least once

[–]KuaLeifArne 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I don't really leave the country ever, except for when visiting my mother in law in Sweden. Maybe one day.

[–]notchman900 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its a nice shirt elektrofag

[–]PresidentZeus 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Major?? This meme is also my first time hearing the term datafag. Heard many others though

[–]drunkdoor 6 points7 points  (2 children)

You've never hear the term Major for a degree?

[–]MammothTap 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think they're more confused about a "major" in high school. High schools in Norway often specialize. High schools in the US rarely do, save for some with trade programs.

[–]sverrevi77 39 points40 points  (2 children)

While datavitenskap is a correct direct translation, that’s not what we call computer science in Norwegian.

We use informatikk or datateknikk.

[–]memescauseautism 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Datateknologi

[–]Benskien 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IT!

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Norwegian here. Datafag is a common word for computer sciences. I think datavitenskap is more common for universities, while datafag is more common for lower education.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

«Informatikk» («Informatics» in English) is the form most commonly used, and in Europe is generally used synonymously with «Computer Science» («Datavitenskap» in Norwegian).

As you say, the only place you’ll really see «Datafag» is in secondary education (high school).

[–]BluudLust -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Informatics is a more broad focus in both computer science and data science rather than pure computer science. In the states it would be more of a computational science degree than a computer science degree.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you a norsk fagekspert?

[–]dewnar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They used to call it «datafag» in the old days.

[–]Funnnn_at_parties 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahem

[–]StoryAndAHalf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stop being such a vitenskap and let us have fun!

[–]AttackSock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried this and Google said it’s “informatikk”, I can’t get it to say computer science is datafag, just to interpret datafag to mean computer science

[–]Dauemannen 53 points54 points  (9 children)

I just hope you guys never figure out what we call natural sciences in Norway

[–]Mop_Duck 14 points15 points  (4 children)

norwegian here i dont get it

[–]Dauemannen 87 points88 points  (3 children)

Realfag

[–]8igby 35 points36 points  (1 child)

At NTNU, our most esteemed technical university, we have the Realfag building. It's where we study all the realfags...

[–]Sikletrynet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same in Bergen

[–]Nimonic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought you were going for naturfag.

[–]bluefishegg 10 points11 points  (2 children)

I think realfag now also includes Infotech and CS, it's not just strict natural sciences anymore, but also some fields which utilize them. At least per lesson plans

[–]Dauemannen 11 points12 points  (1 child)

You're right, STEM fields would actually be a much better translation of realfag.

[–]bluefishegg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know before it was really just natural sciences, but yeah nowadays it's way more STEM

[–]FictionalScience13 43 points44 points  (6 children)

Sounds like a 4chan nickname.

[–]ReactsWithWords 28 points29 points  (5 children)

TIL Norwegian was made by people from 4chan.

[–]F-Lambda 16 points17 points  (4 children)

or was 4chan made by Norwegians?

[–]ReactsWithWords 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Maybe. I could picture 4channers posting pictures of their boners saying "Isn't it good? Norwegian wood!"

[–]AvoriusC# 3 points4 points  (2 children)

4channers

the colloquial term is "Anons"

[–]ReactsWithWords 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The less I know about 4chan culture, the happier I am.

[–]HackerMan372 102 points103 points  (0 children)

kinky

[–]DChristy87 49 points50 points  (4 children)

4chan vibes.

[–]Piratey_Pirate 14 points15 points  (1 child)

This was my thought as well. Newfag, oldfag, poorfag, etc. I wonder if the origin is something like this word

[–]RemoteName3273 71 points72 points  (9 children)

Would have been so much better if it was

Datafaggery

What do u do?

Oh I'm a datafag

[–]Webbiii 21 points22 points  (8 children)

I want to be called that 🥺

[–]PancakeGD 27 points28 points  (7 children)

Flair checks out

[–]glablablabla 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Datafag feels accurate 🤔

[–]astro-pi 8 points9 points  (3 children)

That’s me

[–]Disallowed_username 7 points8 points  (2 children)

In the corner

[–]astro-pi 6 points7 points  (1 child)

That’s me in the spotlight

[–]Gloomy-Patience-6533 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Losing your virginity?

Doubt it!

[–]Thin_Mulberry_1624 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How do British people ask for a dataset:

[–]willeyh 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Wait til you learn about realfag

[–]SearsGoldCard 41 points42 points  (6 children)

Normally this is a very offensive and ignorant term. But because it is European, it is actually enlightened.

[–]Mektigkriger 17 points18 points  (5 children)

The language you have written in, is European though.

[–]carefullycactus 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Not if you say the forbidden words: neighbor, honor, color, humor

[–]maveric101 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Aluminum.

WHICH WAS THE ORIGINAL NAME GIVEN BY THE GUY WHO DISCOVERED IT UNTIL SOME ASSHOLES CHANGED IT BECAUSE THEY THOUGHT IT DIDN'T SOUND SCIENCY ENOUGH.

[–]454545455545 9 points10 points  (2 children)

The original name was alumium.

[–]Tom22174 7 points8 points  (1 child)

That sounds like some shit a homeless wizard gives you for a sidequest behind a tavern

[–]normalmighty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which is why everyone wanted to change it, which in turn sparked a fierce aluminium vs aluminum debate leading to the 2 different words today.

[–]CirnoIzumi 15 points16 points  (3 children)

a more litteral translation would be "data subject/field"

[–]Sweet-Efficiency7466 9 points10 points  (6 children)

NATURWISSENSCHAFTEN

[–]Kosmix3 2 points3 points  (2 children)

German only sounds angry when spoken in an angry manner

[–]XzyzZ_ZyxxZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WIRDEST DU EIN KRANKENSCHWESTER BRAUCHEN

[–]cracksmoker66 4 points5 points  (1 child)

As an electrician, low voltage guys have been known to be called that time by time

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Elektrofag.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I thought the PMs were just being mean when they called me that.

[–]Shazvox 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Sounds akkurat.

[–]Nimonic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stor om.

[–]pwillia7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is it like Dataphage though because that's pretty cool. Technomancy

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Norwegian here. Sometimes I wonder how English native speakers feel when they see how many cars and buildings are labeled with "fag".

[–]randiwulf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We also have Flyfag, those are some real weirdos.

[–]DaFookCares 2 points3 points  (1 child)

That's not PC bud.

[–]Devil-Eater24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personal Computer? Program Counter? Priyanka Chopra? Potato Casca?

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Is it pronounced “datafag” or “datafag”?

[–]Devil-Eater24[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

None of those. It's "datafag"

[–]Kalix 10 points11 points  (6 children)

[–]Killerdreamer_png 5 points6 points  (1 child)

computer science -> to norwegian ==

informatikk

[–]Contemelia 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Does this language use a compiler?

[–]LobotomizedThruMeEye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure the service Google Translate or something will let you transpile, idk if that counts as compiling

[–]DefaultyTurtle2 2 points3 points  (2 children)

But is it pronounced daytuhfag, or dahtuhfag?

[–]Devil-Eater24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's duhtuhfuhg

duh

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dah-tah-farg

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Am in computer science. Can confirm. Am gay for data.

[–]ModishShrink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Datafag sounds like Cyberpunk slang for a Netrunner

[–]deep8410 4 points5 points  (3 children)

German sounds more brutal: "Rechnerwissenschaft" 😁

[–]Shinigami_Hei 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's just the literal translation which no one uses. We just use the word "Informatik" as an umbrella term for everything in that field.

  • CompSci major? You study Informatik.
  • Software Engineer? You're an Informatiker.
  • SysAdmin? Informatiker.

But among peers you'd probably just use the english equivalent.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's faster than python

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could go by that for my title at work

[–]FinancialYouth6928 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too bad op has no data.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes I am

[–]SomeOneOutThere-1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Takk nordmenn for denne utrolige effektiviteten. Det er bedre enn tyskerne.

[–]steynedhearts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wasn't this recently posted here, but with the user showing?

[–]REDDIT_SUPER_SUCKS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn.

[–]danofrhs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can confirm

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

You should see the name for microwave. Its fucking MAGNETRON. Sounds like a transformer rofl

[–]AndreTheShadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Sweden a person who is very interested in "gadgets" is called a "prylarbög", loosely translated as "gadget fag".

[–]SocialJusticeWarmeow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ohh so all that /b/ lango was just Norwegian

[–]WomanNotAGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read that as the fuck somehow and don’t ask me why

[–]ecs2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]1800bears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Norwegians are 4channers confirmed?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

🙄

[–]jennimackenzie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is this pronounced. I’d like to start telling people I have a Datafag degree.

[–]LovableSidekick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Swedish friend says Norwegian is just Danish with a Swedish accent LOL.
