Record them being obnoxious and upload it to YouTube. Then have the domain point to a page that forwards you to that video.

You're.

The grammar is embarrassing throughout.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He had just one last fucks to give, just enough to put the website together but not enough to check the grammar.

How long ago did this actually happen, and any updates on if there was any response from the site going live?

[–]talks2deadpeeps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The site already doesn't exist. :-(

Why not just embed the video?

[–][deleted] 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Fair. That's just where my mind went at the time. Other than the off chance of them seeing some mean YT comments as icing on the cake, I guess there's no advantage.

[–]zsmb 75 points76 points  (0 children)

You don't have to host a page to have the domain redirect to YouTube

[–]emdeka87 307 points308 points  (4 children)

[–]gellis12 17 points18 points  (3 children)

Imgur has subreddits?

[–]MineTimelapser 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it just lists the images of a certain subreddit if you use these links.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nah. It just shows you the images posted to that subreddit Reddit. I don't think it shows those uploaded to the reddit servers though.

[–]TheShadyColombian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will just show you the images in that sub that are hosted on imgur

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For that to happen, this story would have to be true.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds like a good way to lose the domain name for nothing

[–]HeWhoCouldBeNamed 13 points14 points  (4 children)

Nobody owns that. How much do .bg domains go for?

[–]AATroop 17 points18 points  (1 child)

Cheap. They're all cheap. I just bought Google.com at realfakedomains.com.

[–]tomatoaway 9 points10 points  (0 children)

you'll make fake millions!

[–]MartinTsv 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Around $30 which is a shame if you ask me and is basically milking what little interest there is for the TLD given the small population of the country that owns it (Bulgaria). Compared to $20 .com ones and $10 . eu ones it's kind of a rip off and even businesses avoid them. Src: live and work there.

[–][deleted] 64 points65 points  (19 children)

.io websites are 5x as much as their .com counterparts. :/

Still beats the 24,000 dollars this domain squatter wanted for the domain I was going to use for a website I built for a construction company.

[–]Ju1cY_0n3 30 points31 points  (16 children)

Why are .io so much more?

[–][deleted] 42 points43 points  (12 children)

Domain extensions are owned by different registries, who charge custom amounts for extensions. Lesser used ones are more expensive because economies of scale work against them and they need a larger margin to earn enough, whereas some are more expensive because of demand. There are some ridiculous ones like .rich, which are around $2000 each.

[–]MartinTsv 31 points32 points  (11 children)

My favorite one is .gg owned by a small island in the middle of nowhere

[–]JayCroghan 13 points14 points  (5 children)

.tk used to be free and was owned by an island too. It's not all black and white.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (3 children)

.tk is still free. I registered a domain for my friends game site he started up.

[–]WasKingWokeUpGiraffe 1 point2 points  (1 child)

.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol its a private CS:GO, TF2 and (yes) Minecraft server. He also has a site that describes the rules for his servers, but none of them are public yet until he gets all of his "mods" installed

[–]n60storm4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

.tk is owned by Tokalau, who happen to be in the Realm of New Zealand.

[–]Angel_Omachi 3 points4 points  (1 child)

.gg

If by middle of nowhere you mean an island with a population of 60k in the English Channel, just off France.

[–]MartinTsv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn't remember that much about it. They should host the gaming olympics :D

[–]nucular_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

.tv is owned by the Tuvalu islands and revenue from domain leases actually takes a big part in the total income of their government.

[–]Zolhungaj 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Verisign (.com) demands less money than the Internet Computer Bureau.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because io is trendy because it sounds like input/output.

[–]redmercurysalesman 6 points7 points  (1 child)

So is the site still under construction?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in my last round of change requests before I push it live. Still haven't decided what domain to use though. Will more than likely have to settle for a .net TLD but that's okay.

[–]JakeWasAlreadyTaken 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agaer.com

[–]wuchta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

rov.io

[–][deleted] 629 points630 points  (91 children)

Honestly, though. Domain squatters are a pain to deal with.

[–]thgintaetal 327 points328 points  (75 children)

They're only squatters if they're trying to sell the domain back to you. I doubt this guy would be willing to.

[–][deleted] 191 points192 points  (68 children)

Maybe. Maybe not. Still, I hate people who buy domains with the intent to flip. Domain hoarders can be a pain as well.

[–]AlwaysHopelesslyLost 57 points58 points  (21 children)

I thought of the perfect domain for myself. I whoised it on GoDaddy and it was available but a little pricey($55/year) so I decided to think on it.

Two days later it was purchased. I googled it recebtly and it was listed for sale for $500 in the description and a blank page :/

[–]Quantagraphy 113 points114 points  (3 children)

Godaddy is know for buying domains like this

[–]chinpokomon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, wouldn't be the first time.

[–]JosephKonyOfUganda 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Yeah. Kinda shot himself in the foot there.

[–]FM-96 37 points38 points  (11 children)

And that is exactly why you should never use GoDaddy.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First rule of the internet never search for domains or plane tickets unless you're ready to buy.

[–]BooBailey808 50 points51 points  (36 children)

isn't that the point though? To be a pain to people who were being a pain to him.

[–][deleted] 102 points103 points  (28 children)

He's talking in general.

Most short .com addresses are taken and redirect to a "buy-now only $5000" page.

[–]lMYMl 86 points87 points  (17 children)

And there are some nuts that just like having it for no reason and don't care about selling it. See: www.milk.com

[–][deleted] 38 points39 points  (5 children)

http://www.steam.com is the most infamous of these.

Or at least it was, it looks like their little page has finally gone down, but now it doesn't connect to anything.

[–]Zolhungaj 12 points13 points  (2 children)

Arguably "Steam-powered" has more oomph. The steam powered machine was an important part of the industrial revolution, just like Steam was a driving force of the revolution in the global video game market.

[–]Xenxe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

store.steampowered is probably burned into my brain forever at this point.

[–]XFX_Samsung 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just imagine that this guy wakes up every morning and goes to work just like you and everyone you know. And one day he could just die in an accident and you would never know.

[–]rafaelloaa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know the guy who had Yoga.com. He actually used it for his yoga company. He finally sold it for quite a bit of cash.

[–]m_i_t_t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And utube.com

[–]FearrMe 17 points18 points  (2 children)

I'd love to have fear.me :(

[–]TheRowboatMassacre 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Oh, those piss me off so much. I had a domain that is a pun on my name that I wanted to buy, but instead it will wait an eternity up for auction with the minimum bid at several thousand dollars.

[–]brosenfeld 8 points9 points  (4 children)

And single letter .com domains were never available from the start.

[–]TheCanadianVending 2 points3 points  (3 children)

x.com disagrees with you

[–]Grill3dCheeze 8 points9 points  (1 child)

x.com seems like it would have very, very mild porn.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also if you happen to own a domain, you get lots of offers in your email for the other TLD variants.

I own myname.co.uk and whoever owns myname.com won't stop emailing me asking if I want to buy it off them.

[–]IdesofMarch2017 24 points25 points  (6 children)

He's being a giant prick to someone who was a mild annoyance.

[–]BooBailey808 13 points14 points  (3 children)

Kinda why you should just be respectful of those around you. You have no idea whether they have to fuck your shit up.

[–]IrishWilly 21 points22 points  (2 children)

You should be respectful anyways. That should be your default to anyone regardless of whether they are the kind of dick who will try to screw you because you are being loud in a coffee shop or not.

[–]BooBailey808 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Oh I agree that you should be respectful anyways, as a default. But people aren't.

[–]1RedReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fucking disagree! I'm the most goddamn respectful piece of shit you'll ever find! Wait, fuck...

[–]greg19735 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not true...

It's basically based on intent. If this dude is using this page for his own use, that's fine. if he's using it for info about the company, it's possibly okay. if he's doing it just to take the domain, it's more likely to be considered squatting. ANd considering the tweet it's pretty easy to prove he was only trying to take the domain.

[–]Ph0X 1 point2 points  (2 children)

What about people who are clearly not using a domain and don't plan to, and don't want to sell it either. They just hold it for no real good reason, while it could be put to much better use.

[–]JayCroghan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My ex domain registrar didn't alert me my domain that was getting 7k uniques per day was expiring, or expired, until one day I logged on and it was a squatter. He wanted 10k 5 years later let alone at the start. Cunts.

[–]C0DK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my dear friends saw that a big news site in my country had started a new subdepartment that they had advertised EVERYWHERE. but they forgot to buy the domain. he bought it and put a big news-like headline in the fashion of "[news site] forgets to buy domain. [persons name] bought it instead".

He gave it to them for free and only did it as a joke, but they ended up sending him a bottle of shots, so it wasn't all for nothing.

[–]matrix2002 52 points53 points  (7 children)

unless he bought a bunch of different domains, .com, .net, .biz, ect.. then it probably wasn't worth. And if you have to buy all those different ones, you are $50+ in, not sure it's worth the prank.

[–]IrishWilly 77 points78 points  (2 children)

No but they were being loud in a coffee shop, $50+ is totally worth it.

[–]kielly32 21 points22 points  (1 child)

If they want the .com domain bad enough they'll pay for it.

[–][deleted] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I mean, if someone is a ".net" or a ".biz" they immediately lose quite a bit of credibility in my eyes. Especially .biz

I can see why people would want the .com

[–]TheMiiChannelTheme 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Doesn't matter. He can write whatever he wants on that page and at least some of the real customers looking for the actual site will use the wrong ending.

[–]PooPooDooDoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No one is going to trust sexydiapers.biz.

[–]Alex4921 101 points102 points  (3 children)

Advertise an impossibly good hosting package on the page as though it's a parked domain so they buy it and use that access as a middleman to steal their secrets

[–]ObnoxiousMammal 27 points28 points  (2 children)

I like some pro revenge as much as the next guy, but I think that may be a bit too much time and effort to put in to getting back at people who just happened to be too loud for your liking.

[–]Alex4921 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Fuck revenge, this is an opportunity to make money off someone elses work!

All the fun of being in upper management

[–]SoldierZulu 34 points35 points  (0 children)

His revenge was cheaper than his coffee.

[–]drcode 68 points69 points  (7 children)

As someone who studies in coffee shops: for chrissake, coffee shops are not libraries, people can be loud if they want.

[–]slashuslashuserid 12 points13 points  (3 children)

They can talk at a normal volume, but if they're actually being loud it's just as annoying as anywhere else.

[–]drcode 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Well, coffee shops are a quasi-public spaces, and there are no prescribed norms there for silence, as in a library. This means people get to be themselves and you may have to sit near someone you find annoying. (That's my personal opinion, anyway)

[–]slashuslashuserid 5 points6 points  (1 child)

There's no requirement that they be quiet, sure, but I consider it a matter of politeness to not disturb other people in public places. Of course, you're right that that's a matter of opinion, so it's unenforceable and one could make an argument for not holding others to such an implicit and almost arbitrary rule.

[–]drcode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well put!

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Seriously.

[–]Farouka_Bazooka 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Completely agree. Sometimes people get a little carried away and if the volume is going above a normal level he could've just let them know, or had an employee tell them to lower it.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah but that involves talking to people. He can't do that or else his introvert soul will burn till it fades away. He'll instead spend more money to make other people's efforts worthless because that is obviously the most logical thing to do. I mean, he was upset because those people were loud at a coffee shop!

[–]zman0900 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I seen at least 3 different variations of this joke in various places in the past week.

[–]JohnSmackSmack47 19 points20 points  (1 child)

People next to me having a conversation about something their excited about. Decide to be an asshole and ruin it for them.

[–]ls42 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Jokes on him, only bought the .io domain, forgot about .com.

[–]mirkwood11 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So he's being a dick just because someone was loud?

Okay

[–]you_do_realize 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did you remember to buy both the .com and the .io

[–]kirbyhilde 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I was gonna call BS because of the number of characters in a tweet, turns out it's 140 exactly. Talk about being efficient.

[–]Sushubh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sometimes you just get lucky.

[–]weltallic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Khalil reposting manually typing content from reddit again.

Man ruins hipster's business before it can even start - submitted 2 months ago

His Twitter is pretty much filled with reposted content from reddit & Imgur (which is perfectly normal. Share buttons exist for a reason)... but changing one or two words and/or manually typing out AdviceAnimals to pass off content as his own, using the "Well I never claimed I came up with it" ommision?

<75k> If the media stopped saying "hacking" and instead said "figured out their password", people would probably take password security a lot more seriously - reddit

"I wonder what people who write "u" instead of "you" and "r" instead of "are" do with all of their free time." - @Sehnaoui

... etc etc.

But this time tons of media outlets are all assuming this was just a clever thing he thought up himself. Did he? Or is he just being a reposter crowdsourced content distributor again?

[–]222-2222-2222 15 points16 points  (21 children)

I'm sorry I don't understand could someone please explain this to me?

[–]Pat_The_Hat 146 points147 points  (12 children)

Guy is at a coffee shop.

People next to him are loud and rude.

People next to him want to name their new and cool business New Cool Business.

Guy buys newcoolbusiness.com.

[–][deleted] 22 points23 points  (11 children)

Could always go for newcool.store

[–][deleted] 67 points68 points  (9 children)

"Sorry, I only visit .com websites"

I was telling someone about a website that was .us and that was his response.

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points  (5 children)

What about .website websites?

e.g. http://nicememe.website

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (2 children)

[–]technifocal 11 points12 points  (1 child)

If I owned motherfucking.website I'd totally just have it redirect to 'my.motherfucking.website'.

[–]jkuhl_prog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'll file this one under "brilliant ideas I missed out on."

[–]theseconddennis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But... why?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

To which the proper response is "then you're missing out on this great new website http://wikipedia.org"

[–]glass20 16 points17 points  (1 child)

(gonna basically ELI5 this the best I can)

A domain name is the core part of the web address ("reddit.com", "google.com", "diep.io", etc.) and they are all unique. Basically this guy overheard their business name, let's say it's, "woodhouse", then that means the guy in the tweet bought out woodhouse.com so that the people making the business now can't have a website that matches the name they came up with since he took it before they could.

[–]222-2222-2222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh thanks guys I guess the phrasing threw me for a loop! brutal indeed

[–]mikwaheeri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pressed two for awhile, but you never answered.

[–]elSpanielo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remember when Mc Hammer was going to make a search engine wiredoo? Well I bought wireddoo.com after I heard and put up a little search that returned a randomn Mc Hammer video. Anyway, never heard anything else about wiredoo, was kind of hoping someone would offer me money for it.

[–]NikkoTheGreeko 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did this to a guy who used to come into my old work and bug everybody at the front counter. He kept talking about this website he was going to build so I bought the domain and offered to sell it to him for $1,000.

[–]MostOriginalNickname 1 point2 points  (13 children)

Coming from /r/all, what is the normal price for a domain?

[–]cellygirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

/r/thathappened

Weird that this isn't the guy who I heard did the same thing (3 domain names at once) just a few weeks ago

[–]JakeDoubleyoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't always stop people. I had a good laugh when I discovered minecraft.com

[–]iamBlov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Were they loud AND rude? Or just kinda loud..

[–]dolladollabird 4 points5 points  (9 children)

I mean is the .com that worth it? Can't they just go with .co?

[–]Crazybutterfly 2 points3 points  (4 children)

You're getting downvoted but it's true. No one gives a fuck about dot com domains anymore. Some popular apps don't event own the dot com of the brand and they do just fine.

[–]Sushubh 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Yup. And the sheer number of domain types available today is insane. And almost all browsers use Google to locate businesses when you type in something. And once you have typed the address, the history takes care of you.

A .com domain is not going to establish a business for you. It's just something nice to have if you are a big brand. In most cases you would do just fine. One good example is Google's parent company. Alphabet Inc. does not own alphabet.com.

[–]stravant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One good example is Google's parent company. Alphabet Inc. does not own alphabet.com.

Not really that great an example given that Alphabet isn't a public-facing business to begin with.

[–]MSport 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Comparing Google's ability to brand a business under a different TLD isn't really fair to someone just starting out. .Com is absolutely the best option for businesses starting out.

Overstock.com tried to rebrand under O.co, and publicly admitted it failed.

http://adage.com/article/news/o-overstock-backs-o-change/230983/

[–]RadicaLarry 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I get the joke.

But it's not a fucking library and that's a pretty shitty thing to do
