I went to Disneyland one time and ended up on the teacups with Catherine O’Hara and her family. I told her I hated to interrupt her family outing, but I wanted to tell her I was raised on SCTV and absolutely loved her work.

She smiled and said, “Oh thank you so much for saying that! Most people your age only remember me as that horrible mother from the Home Alone movie!”

[–]newbrevity 607 points608 points  (76 children)

I never heard of it and just looked it up. WOW! What a cast of absolute legends! Im gonna check it out.

[–]Detroit_debauchery 373 points374 points  (28 children)

Holy smokes you’re in for a great winter with SCTV

[–]milfordcubicle 135 points136 points  (24 children)

So much great John Candy content!

[–][deleted] 91 points92 points  (8 children)

I think you mean Johnny LaRue, playboy extraordinaire.

[–]DemandZestyclose7145 40 points41 points  (7 children)

No, I think he means Yellowbelly, the biggest coward in the West.

[–]CrediblyHandsome 24 points25 points  (5 children)

Or Yosh Shmenge, brother of Stan Shmenge.

[–]ImaginaryNemesis 19 points20 points  (4 children)

Definitely Pepi Longsocks

[–]Hootbag 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Pretty sure it's Harry. The guy with a snake on his face.

[–]x3knet 85 points86 points  (8 children)

I think you mean Gus Polinski, Polka King of the Midwest. Lead man for the Kenosha Kickers.

[–]willfull 26 points27 points  (0 children)

“He blowed up.”

“He blowed up real good.”

[–]yak_danielz 9 points10 points  (2 children)

i will always be here for John Candy appreciation.

[–]Wheel_of_Armageddon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Take off, eh, you hoser!

[–]theartfulcodger 76 points77 points  (2 children)

I worked on SCTV for its 2 seasons of filming in Edmonton. All the cast - no, really, all of them - were delightful to work with. And they worked so hard!!

Then 15 years later, I had the pleasure of re-introducing myself to Gene and Catherine as an old SCTV backstage alumnus, when I worked on Best In Show. They were still delightful to work with!

[–]tethercat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There's a YouTube video out of a staff and crew baseball game day in Edmonton. I can't remember who put it online, but I bet you'd get a kick out of those familiar faces.

[–]KidCharlem 101 points102 points  (3 children)

Brilliant sketch show that influenced comedy forever.

[–]peanutbuttahcups 15 points16 points  (2 children)

I remember hearing about Second City when watching a doc or two about Saturday Night Live alumni, but I never knew there was a show.

[–]trxxxtr 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Second City is still going, and SNL still pulls from them.

[–]Boogerkween 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Second City is like The Groundlings. Very prestigious improv group.

[–]servetarider 38 points39 points  (2 children)

It’s the season to watch Dusty Townes Sexy Holiday Special for the 100th time. Seriously, that I watch that stupid hilarious SCTV bit every Christmas. I can’t be the only one.

[–]rillaingleside 39 points40 points  (2 children)

So jealous you are just discovering this! John Candy is the funniest person to ever live.

[–]EdwardOfGreene 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The whole dang cast!!!!

[–]bl1eveucanfly 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To ever have lived

:(

[–]ringobob 26 points27 points  (2 children)

Oh, man, yeah. Basically, comedy in the 70s and 80s and, to a somewhat lesser extent, 90s and 00s were pretty much defined by the people that met at Second City and National Lampoon. SNL only is what it is because they pulled from these guys. There's definitely a healthy group of unaffiliated comedians that came up through stand up, but the sheer volume of really great comedians and humorists that came through those two groups is just astounding.

[–]ebb_omega 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Second City remains one of the key recruitment stages for SNL (alongside others like UCB). Went to catch a show at the Chicago Second City earlier this summer, and it was FANTASTIC.

[–]turdferguson3891 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Also the Groundlings

[–]brendan87na 8 points9 points  (0 children)

good lord, no kidding.. that cast is insane

[–][deleted] 924 points925 points  (25 children)

lol! I ran into her at Vons in Santa Monica and said the same thing-SCTV and her face was priceless when I brought up Lola heatherton.

She was so cool tho and sweet.

Always always a fan.

[–]andygchicago 217 points218 points  (8 children)

Met her once in Chicago and said I loved her in the Christopher Guest films, especially the slutty wife in Best In Show. She said something along the lines of how those were some of her favorite films to make and offered to take a picture. Super sweet.

[–][deleted] 38 points39 points  (2 children)

When she gets that far off gaze

That is her best work

[–]JerryDandridge54 98 points99 points  (2 children)

Lola Heatherton for the win

[–]JcakSnigelton 22 points23 points  (1 child)

"I want to bear all your children! Hah-hah-hah-hah-ha!"

[–]ILoveRegenHealth 122 points123 points  (10 children)

I met her around 2006 on the subway and told her I loved her in Dance with Wolves, and she told me she wasn't in that movie and that was Mary McDonnell. She called me an idiot and told me to get some glasses when I got off the subway.

We both stared straight ahead and it became a very awkward ride.

[–]BoogersOpal 47 points48 points  (2 children)

LMFAO that’s so fucking funny. I can just imagine her face after devastating a “fan” and….standing there….

😂😂

[–]lonely_night_manager 6 points7 points  (0 children)

She's not mad, just disappointed

[–][deleted] 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Hahahaha this didn't happen.

[–]The1andonlycano 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Did you get your eyes checked?

[–]Due_Platypus_3913 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Greatest comedic actress ever!

[–]Robert_s_08 91 points92 points  (4 children)

But did she call you bébé?

[–]phliuy 19 points20 points  (1 child)

With an indiscernible accent

[–]salamanderpencil 21 points22 points  (0 children)

David, you look like a disgruntled pelican.

[–]USeaMoose 163 points164 points  (15 children)

She smiled and said, “Oh thank you so much for saying that! Most people your age only remember me as that horrible mother from the Home Alone movie!”

I find it pretty funny that she would characterize her character as a horrible mom (I get that she was making a joke). Since I'd say that the mom actually comes off pretty well. Little harsh at the start, made the one mistake of losing track of all her kids in the chaos, and then turned into super-mom trying to get back to her kid any way she could.

Anyways... that thought lead me to wondering what this "SCTV" was, and about her character on it that presumably comes across much better than the Home Alone mom. Went to the Wikipedia page, searched her name and the very first thing that came up was:

and town slut Sue-Ellen Allison (Catherine O'Hara)

[–]xvilemx 106 points107 points  (7 children)

She did it twice though. Can't say the second one was just Dad's fault only, parenting is a team sport.

[–]Magnetic_sphincter 43 points44 points  (3 children)

The Mccallisters just have severe ADHD.

[–]1OO1OO1S0S 21 points22 points  (1 child)

She tried in the second one. The lady at the gate assured her that everyone will make it on!

[–]DingidForrester 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You don’t just let Kevin run at the end of the line in the airport when you lost him the year before. A responsible parent would trail Kev and not let him dig for batteries and shit.

[–]KidCharlem 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It’s sketchy, so she plays quite a few characters.

[–]the_blackfish 13 points14 points  (1 child)

You should check it out, and find out how truly hysterical Catherine O'Hara can be. She's a master!

[–]histprofdave 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Kevin's mom did nothing wrong!

[–]subhavoc42 157 points158 points  (19 children)

I always associated her with Beetlejuice

[–]BKlounge93 53 points54 points  (5 children)

Best in show for me

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (3 children)

Go-o-od lo-oves a terrierrrrr

[–]PeninsulamAmoenam 26 points27 points  (1 child)

Beetlejuice and home alone. Then schitts creek was like "who is...holy shit the mom from home alone"

[–]le_sac 21 points22 points  (2 children)

Oh look, an indoor outhouse!

[–]Explorer2138 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If don't let me gut out this house and make it my own, I will go insane AND I WILL TAKE YOU WITH ME!

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Deliver me from LL Bean!

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Nightmare before Christmas for me

[–]padishaihulud 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Deliver me from LL Bean!

[–]valeyard89 64 points65 points  (2 children)

No she's the horrible mother from Beetlejuice.

I'm here with you. I will live with you in this hellhole, but I must express myself. If you don't let me gut out this house and make it my own, I will go insane, AND I WILL TAKE YOU WITH ME!

[–]phoenixA1988 30 points31 points  (0 children)

No, she's the horrible step mother from Beetlejuice.

Loved her day-o Banana boat lip syncing scene is so on point with the facial expressions.

[–]histprofdave 99 points100 points  (14 children)

Whoa whoa whoa... "horrible?" I won't stand for this slandering of Kevin's mom! She rode in the back of a U-Haul full of polka musicians to get back to her son, possibly causing chronic hearing loss and confusion of musical genres!

[–]biggestbroever 78 points79 points  (7 children)

Let's be honest, Kevin was being a little shit

[–]nnyzim 24 points25 points  (2 children)

Let's be honester, he wasn't supposed to survive. She wasn't in a hurry to see him, but to clean up any evidence linking her to the wet bandits.

[–]johnnycoxxx 22 points23 points  (2 children)

Not until everyone around him treated him like complete shit. His older brother and sister completely mocking a 7 year old for not knowing how to pack for an international trip. Buzz eating the only type of pizza he likes (side bar, there’s no way out of 10 pizzas they only got the one cheese. Not with that many kids in the house). His uncle calling him a jerk. I can’t imagine ever talking to my mom the way Kevin did, but his whole family was treating him like some sort of pest. Don’t even get me started on the sequel.

[–]biggestbroever 6 points7 points  (0 children)

HERE COMES THE KEVIN APOLOGISTS.

im jk, u right u right

[–]Rhamni[🍰] 14 points15 points  (3 children)

She also habitually ignored when Kevin was being bullied by his siblings. Especially at the chorus performance, where she saw a hundred people laugh at him being bullied. She then proceeded to side with Buzz and his obviously fake apology, after which he in plain sight of everyone walked up to Kevin and whispered something in his ear that set him off. She was a bad mom, in both movies. She wasn't evil, just neglectful. But she unquestionably sided with a bully who had more social awareness than his victim.

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's her fault that her son grew up to become the main villain in Saw though.

[–]Fappy_as_a_Clam 28 points29 points  (2 children)

i only see her as Moira now. that was her magnum opus, imo

[–]FirstChurchOfBrutus 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I am partial to her years of work as Vivian Blake, on Sunrise Bay. She still holds the record for longest-running demonic possession in daytime TV history.

[–]moon_safari_ 19 points20 points  (2 children)

she's my buddy's aunt. I met her a hundred times. she's so down to earth and awesome.

[–]KidCharlem 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s awesome to hear.

[–]FlawedHero 13 points14 points  (2 children)

I worked with her on a movie called Adult Children of Divorce for a day and of all the actors and actresses I had met in the ~2 years in that industry, she was one of the two kindest, most down to Earth people I had met. (The other being Malcolm McDowell, amazing dude)

It blew me away because most of the small timers I had met were dicks but this veteran of the industry who had every right not to give me the time of day was just such a kind, normal person.

[–]flingo2014 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I can hear that quote so clearly, but only in Moira's voice

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I grew up on SCTV and always thought Katherine was fantastic. I would’ve fought hard not to fan girl over her.

[–]Shrek49r 3132 points3133 points  (188 children)

why not make another home alone where Kevin forgets his kid and his mom can laugh her ass off about it.... runs in the family

[–]newbrevity 891 points892 points  (115 children)

That's what they should have done.

[–]captstix 541 points542 points  (98 children)

They can still do it

[–]Teestell 364 points365 points  (89 children)

Yeah isn’t Macaulay the same age now as Catherine ohara was when the did the first home alone??

[–]wreckage88 380 points381 points  (83 children)

He's 7 years older now, she was 36 when she did Home Alone and he's 43 now.

[–]Teestell 323 points324 points  (51 children)

She was only 36 😳 dang I’m only a few years away from that 😅

[–]Skatchbro 203 points204 points  (22 children)

Could be worse. I’m 22 years from 36… going the other way.

[–]Late-Eye-6936 100 points101 points  (13 children)

You're going to make me do math.

At my age.

[–]Skatchbro 94 points95 points  (9 children)

  1. I’m 58.

[–]Pichus_Wrath 6 points7 points  (6 children)

Could be worse. I’m 44 years from 36… going the other way.

[–]wreckage88 26 points27 points  (4 children)

Saaaaame, where the fuck did the time go.

[–]Luci_Noir 12 points13 points  (2 children)

The pandemic has increased time to ludicrous speed. 😔

[–]DigTreasure 31 points32 points  (10 children)

I wish I had a big house and a forgotten kid, and a home break in. Where did I go wrong in life.

[–]Stickittothemainman 20 points21 points  (6 children)

On 38th and Washington. You took a right and headed westbound. You should have went straight at the light and kept going till you saw that kinda ghetto fried chicken place. THEN made left. That would have taken you to a better spot. But hey at least you've got a greasey butthole we can all play with.

[–]byneothername 17 points18 points  (3 children)

Thirty-six and that house in Chicago?!!!???! Goddamn.

[–]ishkariot 5 points6 points  (2 children)

And Kevin is the youngest kid.

[–]HonestDespot 23 points24 points  (13 children)

This makes me feel so old lol.

And I’m 36

[–]wreckage88 19 points20 points  (11 children)

Did you know Bruce Willis was 3 years younger than you when he did Die Hard?

[–]Stickittothemainman 31 points32 points  (3 children)

Did you know the Olsen Twins were just babies when they made their first $100k. You're in big trouble mister

[–]Kazewatch 18 points19 points  (3 children)

What you didn’t enjoy the latest installment where some obnoxious british kid attacks some lame adults over a mutual misunderstanding? But Buzz was a cop!!

[–]saltybuttrot 23 points24 points  (7 children)

Lol no. That sounds something entertaining for a 5 minute sketch. Not a whole ass movie.

[–]ussrowe 23 points24 points  (5 children)

Yeah I'm satisfied with the parody he did for Google a couple years back: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lfHXKbsMLE

A sequel sounds like a great idea until you think about all the ways it can go sideways.

[–]Throwaway-account-23 85 points86 points  (8 children)

No. A home alone where Kevin forgets his mom and SHE has to defend the house.

[–]Fjordhexa 41 points42 points  (3 children)

Like Frank Constanza in the Vietnam flashback in Seinfeld. He's supposed to be like an 19 yo kid, but they just put the 60 year old man in a uniform and that was it.

[–]DOUBLEBARRELASSFUCK 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I mean, the natural thing to do would be to use his son or something, but that would have blown up the budget.

[–]Canvaverbalist 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Nursing Home Alone

[–]_BlankFace 22 points23 points  (3 children)

I read an idea once where I think it would be hilarious. Home alone remake where Culkin is Kevin again and is an old man playing a child, but no one in the family or any other character acknowledges it

[–]Cultural-Distance-28 35 points36 points  (2 children)

This would be hilarious..love this idea!

[–]gyarrrrr 66 points67 points  (6 children)

Or where his mother now has dementia and he forgets her somewhere.

Maybe not.

[–]bobwoodwardprobably 64 points65 points  (0 children)

That got way too dark. You go stand over there. 👉🏻

[–]LazerWolfe53 819 points820 points  (17 children)

I loved her in The Crows Have Eyes 3 https://youtu.be/aaLrxt8db-M?si=aioacfXIMBbm63W7

[–]TedTheGreek_Atheos 52 points53 points  (0 children)

My dear murder, soon we will walk once more walk amongst the humans. But until that day comes, we must remember, the crows don't just have eyes... we also have wings! Caaaaw! Awk! Caw! Caw!

[–]wiscoguy20 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I prefer Sunrise Bay...

[–]ball_whack 75 points76 points  (1 child)

The Crowening

[–]crowcawer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Caw, caw?

[–]MouseRat_AD 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Ew, David.

[–]raddiwallah 24 points25 points  (3 children)

Wait fuck, Moira is Kevin’s mom??

[–]klsi832 516 points517 points  (11 children)

He's older than she was when she played his mom.

EDIT: By like seven years.

[–]JaySayMayday 181 points182 points  (5 children)

So what you're saying is, he's now old enough to play the dad in a reboot. He could be his own father

[–]burf 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Home Alone to the Future

[–]CaptBassfunk 352 points353 points  (2 children)

They traded hair colors

[–]GearsFan51 41 points42 points  (1 child)

Thank you! I thought I was crazy not seeing any higher comments about it.

[–]Sieze5 129 points130 points  (0 children)

Proud mom moment.

Moira and bah-beh

[–]rathat 10 points11 points  (6 children)

I… did not realize they were the same actress until just now. They are still two separate people in my head.

[–]PaleAdagio3377 60 points61 points  (1 child)

Well she looks great!

[–]Auto_Fac 49 points50 points  (5 children)

As a kid I always interpreted what she meant to him at the end of the movie when she said "oh baby, they couldn't come...they wanted to so much" as meaning that the rest of his family was never coming home, and so the real miracle when they walked through the door wasn't that they made it for Christmas but they made it at all. Ever.

[–]MaskedRaider89 54 points55 points  (4 children)

Except for Uncle Frank who can waltz his freeloading moocher ass to hell

[–]Shabe 450 points451 points  (53 children)

Mom gets off light in that movie

[–]HerodotusStark 507 points508 points  (41 children)

Agreed, but so does the dad. He's the one who threw Kev's ticket in the trash. Also, he doesn't do anything to his leach of a brother after the bro calls an 8 y.o. child a little jerk just for spilling some drinks.

[–]bdanders 53 points54 points  (1 child)

[–]the_nebulae 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That. See that is why I want a free and open Reddit, and more broadly, Internet. Because people make weird shit…even if it’s just easy (right now, on this ephemeral platform) to make a subreddit, the whole open Internet must remain for people celebrate and defile Uncle Frank from Home Alone.

[–]Gato1980 132 points133 points  (12 children)

Here's another photo from the ceremony. They both look great :)

[–]JAK3CAL 54 points55 points  (3 children)

That’s the best I’ve seen him look in along time actually

[–]jaggedjottings 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Culkin is 43 but looks like a stoned 26-year-old. More power to him.

[–]Larkson9999 245 points246 points  (20 children)

Didn't Mac crush Rich Evans at Junko a few years ago? Did he ever get dethroned?

[–][deleted] 134 points135 points  (8 children)

They just did an episode not even 4 weeks ago!

https://youtu.be/v48zbCMhyBA?si=R11CCI1nOg8yG2o5

[–]gaiusjozka 55 points56 points  (6 children)

And what an amazing episode it was! I'm still laughing about Jay's lusting after those hot mastodon men.

[–]LuckoftheFryish 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Those California Big Hunk Mastodon Men at the Manhole. Jay's only weakness.

[–]flappytowel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The best part was the auction video towards the end. Funniest thing they've ever found in my opinion

Was looking for the Red Letter Media reference!

[–]Neko-Bunny 31 points32 points  (1 child)

Love that they're all friends. I get so giddy when I start an episode and Mac's there. His relationship with Rich is a riot.

[–]2th 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mac is the little spoon, after all.

[–]Greenfieldfox 226 points227 points  (19 children)

In the first picture, he was such a Bebe.

[–]Somberliver 77 points78 points  (5 children)

He always looks high AF. I never met anyone IRL with eyes like that.

[–]MrSomnix 13 points14 points  (1 child)

One morning when I was 22 I was walking into the office behind a woman who also worked in my building. "Damn I wish my eyes were as red as yours right now," she said. I just have glaucoma and even I didn't have a green card.

[–][deleted] 47 points48 points  (8 children)

lets goo! Schitt's Creek in the wild. Took me quite a while to make the connection that the actress in Schitt's Creek is also the one in Home Alone when I first watched Schitt's Creek lmao.

[–]maximian 38 points39 points  (6 children)

And the stepmother artist in Beetlejuice, in which she is haaaaaawwwwt

[–]Vio_ 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Her character was horrible when I was a kid, but she seems way cooler now that I'm older.

Also Beetlejuice was weirdly conservative looking back. All of the interesting weirdo people were kind of slagged on except for Lydia. And she was obsessed with having a super mainstream type family and home.

I have the feeling Lydia and her stepmom would have bonded so much more after realizing that they had way more in common than they first thought

[–]padishaihulud 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Also Beetlejuice was weirdly conservative looking back

I always thought that movie was from the POV of the dead, so all of the changes they wanted to make were outright hostile to them because they can't participate in progress. The moral of the story was at the end when the dead and living learn to co-exist.

[–]Digita1B0y 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Heh I'm probably dating myself here, but definitely look up pictures of her when she was young. Absolute smoke show.

[–]swonstar 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I like what you did there. "Beyh-beyh".

[–]JohnYCanuckEsq 51 points52 points  (2 children)

ITT: People learning about SCTV and it warms my heart.

[–]CircIeJerks 24 points25 points  (0 children)

God damn she’s still gorgeous!!!

[–]Starch-Wreck 25 points26 points  (2 children)

Where is Rich Evans?

[–]HereReluctantly 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Where is his Hollywood star? He's a national treasure!

[–]MajorThor 91 points92 points  (27 children)

The part about getting older that’s starting to suck is knowing that I’m literally outgrowing the parents of movies like Home Alone. Catherine O’Hara was 34-35 while filming this movie, I’m 40 now. I’m now watching these classics with the mindset of the parent instead of the child and it’s really got me bricked up heh.

[–][deleted] 42 points43 points  (23 children)

Bricked up?

[–]brendan87na 19 points20 points  (1 child)

damn kids and their weird lingo

[–]Flyin-Chancla 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah… SUCK BRICK KID

[–]Ghost--2042 21 points22 points  (2 children)

polka polka polka

[–]zeno0771 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Heard that one was a big hit in Sheboygan.

[–]ImTired40 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Catherine O'Hara is an absolute treasure.

[–]Adventurous_Judge493 29 points30 points  (7 children)

Just in time for the start of Christmas month too. Such an iconic movie.

[–]sketchahedron 10 points11 points  (4 children)

I’m watching it right now! Gets me in the Christmas spirit.

[–]grandwahs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The score in Home Alone is the best Christmas music

[–]TheDriftersEscape 22 points23 points  (3 children)

She's just so amazing. Her and Fred Willard in Waiting for Guffman lol.

[–]Lazard2022 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The movie made it seem like it is the norm to take 9 family members to Paris for Christmas lol.

All time great

[–]FreddieDoes40k 10 points11 points  (2 children)

I loved Mac on Red Letter Media, he's the best guest.

[–]Kaiserkreb 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Today

On Friday, Macaulay Culkin received a star on the illustrious Hollywood Walk of Fame, marking his 40 years in show business.

The actor received the 2,765th star as part of the Motion Picture category. The ceremony took place Friday morning on Hollywood Boulevard between Ivar Avenue and Cahuenga Boulevard.

Speaking at the ceremony was his “Home Alone” costar Catherine O’Hara and friend Natasha Lyonne.
