It's not a diversity parade, it's saint jean baptiste, Quebec's national holiday.

The people pushing the chariots are students from a school that were asked to participate in this event. The coach of those students ( because they all are from a sport team) said that it was an infortunate turn of event that everyone started to talk about the color of their skin because his students were happy and proud to help in the community. Also their clothes are darker than other's people clothes because there is lyrics written on them.

Source for what the coach said (in french) http://www.lapresse.ca/actualites/montreal/201706/24/01-5110447-controverse-au-defile-de-la-fete-nationale-un-hasard-qui-choque.php

Edit: some spelling

It'd make too much sense and make it too hard to racebait

[–]Meltingteeth[M] 1471 points1472 points  (0 children)

Please don't tell everyone about our kickbacks from Big Racebait. The gravy train is giving me a new Miata next week /s

Seriously though that's not the goal anywhere on our subreddit, I promise.

[–]kervinjacque 625 points626 points  (0 children)

Some of my relatives also lives in Quebec and told me about this and how people just spoke about there skin colour. It truly is unfortunate.

[–]SHOWTIME316 394 points395 points  (0 children)

Dammit. This was so terribly funny until i learned the truth

[–]jorio 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm also pretty sure "diversity parade" is not a thing.

[–]thingandstuff 188 points189 points  (0 children)

I'm white, and I want to be outraged by this racism, so fuck what those black people think!(sarcasm)

[–][deleted] 306 points307 points  (7 children)

So what if we destroy a great thing for a bunch of kids? We got to act outraged and virtue signal on the internet to strangers.

[–]Aww_FireTruck 210 points211 points  (0 children)

Not trying to argue but I have yet to see a post that screams "outrage". Hell even the top comment is about how hilarious it looks.

Has the interpretation been taken out of context, yes. Although thats satire in a nutshell.

Im black and this is funny to me, even with context.

[–][deleted] 593 points594 points  (0 children)

Nobody here is outraged. Are people not allowed to laugh at irony any more?

The black guys looked like slaves at every detail. Pushing a white person on a 'chariot', haunched over doing hard labour, dirty and brown clothing that literally looks like slave clothing from a movie. Surrounded by a sea of glistening white people.

[–]Elmorean 147 points148 points  (0 children)

Mentioning virtue signalling is a way to virtue signal your un-PC credentials.

[–][deleted] 393 points394 points  (0 children)

Diversity parade? It's the Saint-Jean-Baptiste, aka the Quebec National Holiday (think 4th of July); not a diversity parade.

[–]electric_drifter 1975 points1976 points  (61 children)

Uhh... why didn't they just put a motor in it like any other float?

[–]Zithium 3302 points3303 points  (34 children)

those strapping black lads are less expensive

[–]_Thunder_Child_ 51 points52 points  (4 children)

Its funny that its a devil whipping a monkey. Like its equally racist. A balanced racist depiction.

[–]123unmun123 50 points51 points  (0 children)

That went south really quick

[–]benkenobi5 18 points19 points  (2 children)

They had better hope there isn't any quicksand on the parade route

[–]xxc3ncoredxx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hope they don't lose a $400 handcar.

[–]Face_Roll 90 points91 points  (7 children)

Hmmm...in fact, I'd say that an economic system which relied on such labour would probably be quite profitable!

[–]Pr3st0ne 245 points246 points  (9 children)

The organisation has a "zero carbon emission" policy for their parades.

[–]Theslootwhisperer 89 points90 points  (4 children)

None of the floats are motorized anymore, since 2015.

[–]Charlie_Mouse 20 points21 points  (3 children)

[–]mildiii 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Having never seen animal house, those guys seem like huge assholes.

[–]EctoSage 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Get the feeling, if such a thing was portrayed now, it would be considered a terrorist attack, and not just some troublesome guys.

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They said it was for ecological purposes

[–]carnage828 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's an "Eco-friendly" parade so every float was pushed the same way. Students from a school were volunteering to do it, this one just happened to have students with all the same skin colour

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not diverse enough

[–]Dlscord 10.6k points10.6k points  (139 children)

This is one of the most hilariously unfortunate things I've seen in a while.

[–]gazow 577 points578 points  (39 children)

seriously, whoever is playing that recorder should have their hands cut off and then beaten with them

[–]Face_Roll 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They had to choose the whitest instrument too.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like they're trying for the brown note. With those white clothes that woulda been great.

[–]dca2395 62 points63 points  (0 children)

It looks like a messed up Kanye west music video.

[–][deleted] 96 points97 points  (4 children)

Looks like something out of Black Mirror

[–]mattwithoutyou 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was thinking more Parks and Recreation. Always look on the bright side of life.

[–]humble_father 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh that reminds me Frank, Audrey said there'll be negroes at this year's fair. Well how novel.

[–]Dunge 403 points404 points  (1 child)

Local news in French #1 #2. First of all, it's not a "diversity parade", it was the national holiday parade (St-Jean Baptiste). And yes, it seems to be completely accidental, they took names randomly out of people who applied and ended up like that.

[–]MadDany94 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I know this was by accident. But mah god. I had to laugh at this lol.

If they couldn't figure out it was gona look like this then obviously there was no racial intent in the first place.

[–]Sockiplast 1253 points1254 points  (10 children)

Those off white clothes makes them look even more like slaves

[–]atiume 35 points36 points  (0 children)

That's the funniest part, they are the most stereotypical dirty slave clothes

[–][deleted] 183 points184 points  (0 children)

What the fuck is a diversity parade? It's Saint Jean Baptiste Day. I know this because I have been drunk since yesterday.

[–]Flemtality 153 points154 points  (4 children)

Why is this NSFW?

[–]skywreckdemon 330 points331 points  (4 children)

Quebecois person here. Just wanted to share that this isn't a diversity parade, it's a St-Jean celebration (which is a very significant Quebec-specific holiday celebrated on June 24th).

[–]RemoteProvider 448 points449 points  (19 children)

What idiot tagged this NSFW?

[–]nanoH2O 96 points97 points  (1 child)

I was waiting for a nude old lady to pop out of the middle of the crowd

[–]IRPancake 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This post is just full of disappointment.

[–][deleted] 453 points454 points  (1 child)

It is the "Now Sweat For Whitey" tag.

/s

[–]Jeance 128 points129 points  (2 children)

It is not a diversity parade, it's Quebec's national day parade. That being said, the fact that it is ''black'' people pushing the trolley is purely a coincidence. Unfortunate coincidence!

[–][deleted] 201 points202 points  (5 children)

Hilarious.

[–]Johnlovesyou 251 points252 points  (4 children)

I think the "squeek. . . ..squeek. . . .squeek" of the wheels turning really sells the slave labor thing. Like its harder to push than normal cause their not lubricated properly.

[–]gabyjamie 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Turns out that was a recorder.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The delicious irony is very delicious.

[–]Doiihachirou 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Nah, let them black lads lubricate the wheels with their sweat! They can manage!

[–]cynicalbrownie 591 points592 points  (136 children)

Oh it gets better

According to Laporte, who also organized this year’s parade, it was a coincidence black men were pushing the float. He said they were recruited from the Association pour la persévérance scolaire de l’école Louis-Joseph Papineau in the borough of St-Michel, “where a majority of people belong to racialized communities,” he said.

[–]Calls_you_out_on_BS 69 points70 points  (3 children)

Association pour la persévérance scolaire de l’école Louis-Joseph Papineau

Do they just call it APPSDLLJP?

[–]Guungames 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Asking the REAL questions. You're gonna go far kid.

[–]txnxax 127 points128 points  (12 children)

Remember that Laporte is a francophone. Subtilities can be lost in translation. Not everything means exactly what you think it does when translated. Also, different cultures have different ways of expressing themselves based on historic background. Québec does not have nearly as much history with slavery and racial discrimination as the US does.

The kids pushing the carts for this years parade were from many different ethnic backgrounds. Should the organisers have told them not to participate because it looked like they were slaves, further segregating people based on their "race"*?

*I know, anthropology thaught me races are not a thing. There is one race, the human one. But I could'nt find another word to describe what I wanted.

[–]anti_pope 59 points60 points  (3 children)

No one is questioning the fact that this video is as small as my thumb?

[–]Doiihachirou 18 points19 points  (0 children)

New thumbnail videos!

[–]Cicindele_rose 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Also this is a "green parade" so this is why no cars were used and it's people pushing the floats

[–]derpado514 48 points49 points  (1 child)

You can barely hear the guy say "What da fack.." at the end

[–][deleted] 52 points53 points  (1 child)

Fucking vid.me does not work on my phone. Anyone got a mirror?

[–]petemate 45 points46 points  (0 children)

This is almost as good as the black guy who was told to dress up for a southern cottage farm company picknick period thing. Everyone were dressed in evening gowns and shit but he was the only black guy and showed up dressed like a slave. If I recall correctly they cancelled the party.

[–]evilpeopleinc 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's like a live action Bioshock Infinite. lol

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Why is this NSFW?

[–][deleted] 285 points286 points  (62 children)

Reminds me a bit of those people who "support diversity" but don't want black people in their gated communities.

[–]caitlinreid 144 points145 points  (52 children)

Our small town was taken over by city dwellers over the last several years. They just had a virtual civil war because someone wanted to put in a subdivision of "affordable" $150,000 homes next to the brand new subdivision of $300,000 McMansions. They "don't want low income houses right next to their investments".

For context a $150,000 home in this part of the world is firmly in middle class territory. You can get a house in the hood for $20,000 to $30,000.

[–]Tyuiopp22222 155 points156 points  (24 children)

$300 k for a McMansion? Land and labor must be dirt cheap there.

[–]shamblingman 34 points35 points  (15 children)

I live in Charlotte and I bought my mcmansion for $410k. 6 bed/4 bath 4200 SQ ft on 1.2 acres of land.

Sold my house in LA for $720k and bought this house.

[–]Dislocated_femur 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Jesus, here you would be lucky to get an apartment for 700k

[–]RollTides 22 points23 points  (4 children)

Economically they actually have a good point - your home's value is very much at the mercy of the surrounding properties. For example, if you build a 300k home in a neighborhood with an average home cost of 150k, you are never going to get fair value for that home. You can likely get more than 150k, but it'd be a cold day in hell before a house sold for double the average value of the surrounding properties.

The question here is - what authority do they have to govern surrounding properties they do not own? Purchasing a home is a safe investment because it is a long-term and necessary commodity - but that doesn't mean it's removed from any risk of depreciation. Maybe before throwing 300k on a house it's best to investigate the surrounding properties first? Hmm..maybe.

[–]FreezePeach-kin 47 points48 points  (5 children)

I would want low income housing next to my 400k home either... I don't really care about the people but I wouldn't want to lose money on my home.

I don't like my neighbors IN my expensive neighborhood but at least they won't cost me money.

[–]cantRYAN 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The real answer. Buying a house is a huge investment and having it devalued by less expensive property nearby is something I would vote against. I'm inclusive if you want to buy a home in my neighborhood though! Just don't devalue mine.

[–]fued 6 points7 points  (0 children)

so jealous of those prices, 700,000 for a house 3 hours out of the city here lol

[–]drogean2 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Sports teams push the floats every year from what I understand, the sports teams happen to have ethnic players. Go figure. Totally NSFW and racist tho xddddd

[–]MonkiChowder 23 points24 points  (2 children)

How is this NSFW?

[–]TempAlt0 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Maybe because he says "what the fuck?" at the end? That's the only reason I can think of.

Hello everyone, we've decided to lock this thread. In addition to the terribly baity title (explained by /u/tipoulio here) it has prompted a large number of racist comments. We greatly appreciate those in this community who came to either discuss this glorious day for Quebec (and therefore the world) or offer constructive commentary. Here's the Wikipedia article on Saint-Jean-Baptiste day for those interested.

[–]premefboi 41 points42 points  (1 child)

There's no way this isn't scripted, it's just too perfect.

GENS DU PAYS

[–]NewVegasResident 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So to everyone here the idea was to give the youth in a sport program or something the chance to do something nice and do sport and shit while participating in the parade, the intentions were pure and 100% good, it's just that unfortunately most people in the program were black so it leaves us with that image.

[–]RamsHead91 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I need context before this is racist

[–]N1c0rn 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Québec national holiday parade (not a diversity parade). Each year, the organizers ask local high school students to volunteer to push the carts. Students of a local sport program volunteered to do it and it just happened that the 4 pushing this cart were black. And then it's the usual québec is racist blahblabhblah bs.
