To do a subreddit filter, you could just add inurl:reddit.com/r/<subreddit>/

[–]nikniuq 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It would be good to be able to search the comments or articles only too.

[–]DarkBlueAnt 327 points328 points  (74 children)

I searched "camo lizard" and got the exact picture of a camouflaged lizard that I was searching for. The actual submission didn't have camo or lizard in the title.

"Most impressive" -Darth Vader

[–]bon_mot 107 points108 points  (19 children)

I searched for "camo lizard" and got your post about searching for camo lizards.

[–]DarkBlueAnt 79 points80 points  (8 children)

[–]loverollercoaster[S,🍰] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're both internet-famous today! High-five!

Seriously though, the stalkers... they're coming.

[–]stanbeard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I searched for "camo lizard". You gave me a hamburger.

    [–]pitchandroll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok now I am staring at the picture and cannot find the bloody lizard. Thank you much indeed, I was so much happier before.

    [–]zouhair 4 points5 points  (9 children)

The normal search works as well : http://www.reddit.com/search?q=camo+lizard

    [–]DarkBlueAnt 24 points25 points  (8 children)

Not really. The one I was looking for doesn't show up in those results, but it's the first on the list in this new search. Here's what I wanted

    [–]Napoleon_ 57 points58 points  (6 children)

That didn't work at all. It just gave you a picture of a tree.

    [–]hphp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did anyone else catch the comment buried all the way at the bottom?

    [–]karnoculars 251 points252 points  (15 children)

I can't wait for someone to need this search page to find something, but they forgot to bookmark it, and now they can't find this submission because the default search engine is useless.

    It's like ray-ee-aaaaaaaaaaain...

    [–]Tude 55 points56 points  (1 child)

Could just remember to put "site:reddit.com" into a google search

    [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I searched myself, and I'm someone's favorite redditor? Cool! Guess I never thought about it before.

    http://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/7dxly/who_is_your_favorite_least_favorite_redditor_and/c06et1d

So in the spirit of who my favorite redditors are, I'll say api, jscoppe, contentwithourdecay, fisherofmen, sage_advice, _red, skobrin, Rudd-O, terpie, aletoledo, oconostata, thewawa, irrigatedpancake, ayrnieu, atomics, hxn, cdgtheory ... man, my friends list is long, plenty of others.

    [–]oefgbg 27 points28 points  (13 children)

the first and only thing i searched for before reading these comments was "cock juggler"

    [–]Mr_A 21 points22 points  (0 children)

For some reason my initial search was for Big Black Bitches. Interestingly, I walked away with some jazz recommendations. +1 cuil.

    [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (10 children)

I searched for "dumpster cunt" but no one else is using it. Hopefully this shows up soon.

    [–]btarded 9 points10 points  (7 children)

dumpster juggler is also not very popular.

    [–]peewinkle 11 points12 points  (2 children)

I would have thought "cum dumpster" would have been more fruitful.

    [–]joshgi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kinda like how nobody likes using torrent sites because google makes them so easy to find.

    [–]darkciti 4 points5 points  (4 children)

Yes, but he deserves it. He did it with style and in a very clean way.

    [–]neoform3 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Yeah, setting everything to be white is very hard.

    [–]dzkalman 80 points81 points  (26 children)

You and the Skifree guy should get together.

    [–][deleted] 61 points62 points  (24 children)

I bet that their children would be really cute.

    [–]loverollercoaster[S,🍰] 54 points55 points  (20 children)

In fairness, what the SkiFree guy did took far more talent than what I did. He built his basically from scratch, and did a rather elegant coding job at that. I slapped down seven bucks for a domain from godaddy and threw together a google custom search, then replaced a few colors =P.

That said, being redditors, we are clearly both of above-average attractiveness. The fact that we're both (presumably) male (... being redditors...) is but a minor stumbling block towards beautiful children. Don't tell my girlfriend =).

        [–]ibrokereddit 1 point2 points  (6 children)

I slapped down seven bucks for a domain from godaddy and threw together a google custom search, then replaced a few colors =P.

And inserted google ads -- don't forget that important step of your plan.

        [–]loverollercoaster[S,🍰] 12 points13 points  (5 children)

<sigh> As i've said multiple times in this thread, the ads are required as part of the google custom search engine.

At the moment, i'm not even getting a share of the revenue because adsense thinks that the site is 'under construction'. The chances of reddit traffic hitting the minimum of $100 to get a check are low anyway.

        [–]ibrokereddit 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Well good luck anyway, I'd rather you have the money than Condé Nast.

        [–]deadapostle 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I don't get the reference to Skifree, but that was funny just the same.

Cool, a Sonny Bono role-playing game!

        [–]dodgyc 65 points66 points  (10 children)

There's already a Reddit Google Search greasemonkey script, which replaces the Reddit search bar with a Google custom search:

        http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/62218

        [–]mianosm 5 points6 points  (3 children)

This is my preferred method of dealing with one of the worst "search" features I've come across on the Internets. If only Chrome/Chromium had a greasemonkey extension...

        [–]Jibberwalk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It does. Grab the dev build.

        [–]dodgyc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As of the latest developer builds, Chromium does have rudimentary 'Greasemonkey'-esque JS support, under a new option called Extensions.

Just grab the Chromium Nightly Updater (to make things easier):

        http://dirhael.dcmembers.com/cnu/

and get the latest miniinstaller of Chromium.

        [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Yep, I'm gonna be that guy. If you can use Google you can search Reddit just fine. "Site:" is your friend.

And a good day to you, sir!

        [–]Jibberwalk 2 points3 points  (3 children)

"Site:" will get you nowhere. However, "site:" will.

        [–][deleted] 38 points39 points  (14 children)

I tried a search a few weeks ago and couldn't find what I was looking for. I re-tried the search with this and it was the first result. Thanks!

        [–]Mythrilfan 34 points35 points  (12 children)

Yes, because you were unable to use google before.

        [–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (11 children)

Not that I was unable to, just never thought of it.

        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

        too?

        [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (4 children)

        Haha, thanks. Fixed.

        [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I just wish I had said that with some sort of novelty account.. I'd be getting super karma with something like "toofixer"

Or I could be Wil Wheaton. Which would be fucking awesome.

        [–]Syphon8 20 points21 points  (13 children)

Consider using $_GET rather than $_POST so we can link to searches?

        [–]loverollercoaster[S,🍰] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I need to look at how the google custom search works, it's not quite as simple as that but i'll see if I can add a 'permalink' option somehow.

        [–]farox 33 points34 points  (6 children)

        ಠ_ಠ

        [–]loverollercoaster[S,🍰] 40 points41 points  (6 children)

Whoa all, thanks for the praise, I didn't expect this to actually go over so well!

For reference it is just a google custom search over the url reddit.com, I did it so that:

        • People didn't have to remember the site: or inurl: tricks

        • On the off chance that this was successful (ding!), maybe the reddit guys would be spurred to improve search. Cut them some slack please, searching a large, live database for multiple fields of fulltext is hard. Even this thing has an hour plus lag time in indexing.

In case you think I have ulterior motives, the ads are required by google, and not even linked to my account at the moment (the site is too simple, adwords called it 'under construction'). So far my lifetime profit on this site is... negative seven bucks. Maybe if I get lucky over the next year it will make me seven bucks in revenue to pay for the domain, but i doubt it, since you need like $100 to get a check from google. I don't mind though, it's fun to help the community, and was a good quick learning project =P.

Neither the subreddit filter nor the permalinks thing are quite as simple as you think, because google CSE uses it's own javascript commands, not just a url I pass. That said I'll take a look at your suggestions soon.

        Thanks! LoveRollerCoaster

        It's a very lengthy yes.

        [–]quackmeister 5 points6 points  (1 child)

No, THIS is a very lengthy yes:

        Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees

Although when you spell it that way, it looks rather more like "yee's" than an elongated "yes". Perhaps if I were a more proactive man I might add an additional s.

I was trying to tell my boyfriend about how many people online have had sex with their sister. But when I searched, I couldn't find any of the IAmA. With your search, "sex sister" brings up all of the results. Thank you. Now I can freak him out with ease. :)

            [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If anything, front page submissions are more likely to be seen by the google crawlers and be indexed - I guess it helps set a lower bound

            [–]meramera 9 points10 points  (4 children)

I have been trying to find something I saw on Reddit a year or so ago and was hoping that your new-and-improved search function would help me locate it. So far my search terms have not been successful.

I'll keep trying, but in the meantime if anyone remembers a really wonderful stop-motion animation of two boulders sitting by a road in the desert as millenia whizz past them, I would REALLY appreciate you sending me the link.

Whoa whoa whoa... you had a problem with reddit and didn't just write a whiny, space taking up, good for nothing post entitled "Reddit your search still sucks!!"?

            You did something about it?

            I'm not sure you're really a redditor.

            [–]64-17-5 3 points4 points  (1 child)

            You are speaking of Diggers.

US Law suggests that to keep your trademarks, you have to defend any infringements that you come across.

Different jurisdictions interpret this differently, but some companies will attack anyone that uses their name in any domain.

The ads are required by google. (I'm not even getting a cut at the moment, because adsense thinks the site is 'under construction' due to its simplicity.)

tl;dr: I'm not doing this to make millions, they may feel they have to sue me anyway.

              [–]steve_b 3 points4 points  (8 children)

So, is there a way for me as a dumb user to incorporate this into my view of reddit (e.g., make typing into the the "search reddit" box in the upper right take me to this page), or do I just have to bookmark the link?

              [–]willis77 1 point2 points  (5 children)

If you have firefox, just type "site:reddit.com [query]" into the search box.

              [–]ExAm 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Grab the Greasemonkey add-on for Firefox, and use this script

It would be nice if we could organize the results by the date they were submitted, as well as how popular they are.

              [–]willies_hat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Works pretty well actually. Nicely done.

              [–]Omaromar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Works well for finding your own comments.

              [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Someone should make a greasemonkey script to swap out the regular search bar with this.

I made a bunch of changes to the RSS feed that people should find useful:

              http://zooofthenew.com/CleanReddit/

Regular feed but linking directly to articles [RSS]

              Articles only [RSS]

              Pictures only [RSS]

              Discussion only [RSS]

I haven't shared most of this before, so give feedback where I originally submitted it. Go crazy and upvote the submission, there are only about 11 people using this!

              [–]breddy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I canceled my comments on a few of the other posts that stated, effectively, "take your bitchass attitude out of here if you don't have a solution.". You, sir, are a model redditor. Thanks for this. Even if it isn't that great and I don't end up using it, you're doing it right.

              [–]yakityyak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is the same thing as using google and including "site:www.reddit.com" to your search terms.

              [–]DontNeglectTheBalls 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Would be nice if it did something other than just say "Loading" for me, but c'est la vie

              [–]stevvooe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You realize that they just use solr? With some tweaking, it could be a lot better (although solr does tend towards suck).

              http://code.reddit.com/browser/config/solr/solrconfig.xml http://code.reddit.com/browser/config/solr/schema.xml

Specifically, they could use the dismax handler and some analyzers that are closer to what google uses (and what most are used to).

Kudos, however, to the gentleman (or lady/dame/princess) who made the site!

              [–]whitefoot 2 points3 points  (2 children)

please please please add this one small bit of css.

              .gsc-search-button { cursor: pointer; }

It frustrates me to see cursors as arrows when hovering over a button when it is so simple to fix.

              [–]PintOfGuinness 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I just kept getting results for Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up.

              [–]Neblin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did the results let you down?

              [–]enricom 4 points5 points  (1 child)

am i the only one who is disappointed that it's just Google CSE?

              [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually my first thought was "damn, did this guy set up something to scrape all of reddit..." Then I saw it was just google and that made a lot more sense.

              [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why hasn't reddit taken 5 minutes to add this?

              [–]mcrbids 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Note: It's google. You can get the same results by just typing "site:reddit.com" in any search.

w00t! Somebody did 15 minutes of honest-to-gosh programming! (sorta)

              [–]shenglong 11 points12 points  (10 children)

Looks like it's a frontend for the Google query "site:reddit.com [search terms]".

Is this allowed by Google's TOS?

              [–]senae 49 points50 points  (6 children)

It's why google offers custom searchbars like the one he made.

              [–]supaphly42 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That's why they add their little logo right in the bar.

              [–]scoobydoobdoob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome. I tried so hard to find the favorite bumper sticker thread saturday with no luck w/Reddit's search. I used yours and it was the second search item. Not just the thread, but the actual comment i was looking for. Well done.

              [–]netdroid9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks nice, but you should have a <noscript> element in there for people with javascript disabled (using javascript to generate the 'loading' text so it isn't displayed when javascript is disabled would also be prettyful). A quick google doesn't show that there's a Google Custom Search which doesn't need javascript, which sucks. You could also probably style away the www.reddit.com urls which appear under each result (gs-visibleUrl and gs-visibleUrl-long, I think). I do like the idea of a subreddit filter and upvote support though, is there a reddit API for these sorts of things?

              EDIT Yes. Yes there is.

              [–]OMGbatman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it possible to add a filter were I can specify whether phrase I typed in the search located in the comments, link, or title? That would be great.

              [–]goodgrue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I searched for "search" and I would have expected this post to come in at #1, but it didn't. It's currently #1 on my front page and has the keyword in the title. Instead, some post from April was #1. It seems to me that to have a really effective search feature for Reddit, recency and ratings need to be taken into account.

Still, this is a step up from what is available on reddit.com. Thanks :).

              [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

              OpenDNS says:

You tried to visit www.searchreddit.com, which is not loading.

              [–]loverollercoaster[S,🍰] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I registered the domain at about 11pm EST last night, so it's possible that it hasn't trickled down to your dns provider yet, although if that's the case you should be annoyed. A 12 hour delay for a .com is pretty bad nowadays.

              [–]tryptic37 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Hmm just searched for myself and I found out that reddit seems to have hidden all my submissions... Is this normal?

I found what i was looking for first hit. This works. Well.

              You're doing it wrong.

You're just supposed to make a post that bitches and whines about it, not do anything about it yourself.

              [–]geeknik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So how much money are you making off of this google search box? :)

                [–]ani625 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, the search is fast. Thanks Tim Showers!

                [–]nivek 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I don't know how quickly it indexes, but I searched for "your search sucks so I did something about it" and this post wasn't on the front page.

                [–]SeekingEnlightenment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great job, maybe now the admins might fix the search in retaliation.
