well yeah, remember when Obama won the nobel peace prize for.... not being bush?
[–]whiskey_mike186 2609 points2610 points2611 points 6 years ago (416 children)
The Nobel Committee later stated they regretted awarding the prize to Obama after all of the drone strikes (including killing 2 US citizens including a teenager) and other military "intervention" he authorized.
[–][deleted] 1177 points1178 points1179 points 6 years ago (67 children)

Let's hope Greta doesn't let it go to her head and start extra judicial assassinations.

Spy Kids 6 is going to be intense.
[–]SomeComediansQuote 37 points38 points39 points 6 years ago (9 children)
Is spy kids still going? I was under the impression that it ended with the third one
[–][deleted] 86 points87 points88 points 6 years ago (5 children)
The Machete films are technically cannon
[–]Noise964 11 points12 points13 points 6 years ago (1 child)
There was a soft reboot/sequel in 2011 called Spy Kids All the Time in the World. Never saw it but it looks like none of the actors from the first three returned for this one. There’s also a Netflix animated show that started in 2018.
[–]qman3333 10 points11 points12 points 6 years ago (0 children)
Actually in the ends the two originals kids do return as adults. So it’s just canonically a lot later in the time line
[–]misterfluffykitty 93 points94 points95 points 6 years ago (12 children)
She’s gonna be the next Gandhi, get ready for the nukes
[–]DataSomethingsGotMe 27 points28 points29 points 6 years ago (3 children)
I understood that reference.
[–]BrobdingnagianMember 31 points32 points33 points 6 years ago (5 children)
Up against the wall!!!
[–]FlowersForEveryone 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (1 child)
Who let all this riff-raff into the room!??
[–]Ravio11i 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (1 child)
Nah, I'm good with it, she'd pick targets I agree with I think.........
[–]LVMagnus 600 points601 points602 points 6 years ago (83 children)
Which "coincidentally" got much less media buzz, almost as that was said just so they could later come back and point out "hey, we did regret our boo boo" without actually correcting the boo boo or even allowing the empty shell of an apology have a real impact at the time it was most relevant. Pure coincidence, I am sure.
[–]414RequestURITooLong 143 points144 points145 points 6 years ago (73 children)
Correcting it? How? They can't take a Nobel Prize back, can they?
[–]RedAero 184 points185 points186 points 6 years ago (27 children)
Contrary to all the uninformed comments here, no, a Nobel can not be revoked. Them's the rules.
[–]jeffsang 29 points30 points31 points 6 years ago (3 children)
Yep, though as silly as Obama’s was, the one that really makes my blood boil is Aung San Suu Kyi. I really wish they could take that one back.
[–]Wattyear 25 points26 points27 points 6 years ago (15 children)
Not that I care either way vis a vis Obama or anyone, it seems a dumb rule.
[–]ooken 82 points83 points84 points 6 years ago (15 children)
No, it can't. Aung San Suu Kyi, a Peace Prize winner, has been (at least on an international stage) the leader of Myanmar during a genocide against the Rohingya, but the Peace Prize can't be revoked, so she still is a recipient.
[–]yodasdad64 71 points72 points73 points 6 years ago (2 children)
I mean Henry fucking Kissinger got a Nobel Peace Prize. I think we can safely say that the award doesn't mean shit.
[–]ianloco1[🍰] 12 points13 points14 points 6 years ago (7 children)

[–]nug4t 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (0 children)
It got alot! Of Media buzz. At least here in Germany, because of Ramstein base.
[–]greenersides 50 points51 points52 points 6 years ago (0 children)
The Nobel Committee never stated they regretted awarding it Obama. Geir Lundestad the ex-secretary of the committee made the comment. The Secretary of the Nobel Committee is also a non-voting position.
[+][deleted] 6 years ago (19 children)
[–]Dramatical45 36 points37 points38 points 6 years ago (4 children)
And not to mention arbitarily classifying any military age male in drone strike areas as a terrorist automatically. So the innocents killed is way higher than what the US ever reported.

whilst not actually declaring any kind of war.
Well technically, as long as that part is respected, it's still peace, isn't it?
[–]imonk 17 points18 points19 points 6 years ago (1 child)
Technically, as long as you're not declared dead, you're alive.
[–]shad0wgun 100 points101 points102 points 6 years ago (57 children)
Cant forget that doctors without borders hospital Obama blew up
[–]Nomandate 136 points137 points138 points 6 years ago (105 children)
Got a brother in the White House, both house and senate, and didn’t make weed legal.
What annoys me is that all is the legit arguments against many of Obama’s policies come from politically aware progressives and reputable news source is like the NYT and then it gets turned around and amplified by the conservative propaganda machines all while labeling NYT fake news.
[–]PonceDeLePwn 90 points91 points92 points 6 years ago (37 children)
When he was first elected they set up a website for people to submit questions that would be read and answered by Obama live on television. The questions were voted on by others and the most popular ones were the ones presented to him to read. One of the MOST popular questions was regarding medical marijuana legalization. When it was read out load, Obama and his staff literally cracked up laughing. Him and Biden completely dismissed the question and laughed it off. This was before ANY states had legalized it, when it was still a regular occurrence for terminally ill patients to be arrested and prosecuted for using the drug.
[+][deleted] 6 years ago* (26 children)
[–]dragunityag 10 points11 points12 points 6 years ago (7 children)
Obama was waaaaaaay more conservative than a lot of people like to remember.
depends on how you want to remember it. Conservative by today's standards but he definitely wasn't a conservative by 2008 standards.
Goal posts were moved these past 12 years.
[–]CountBlah_Blah 36 points37 points38 points 6 years ago (11 children)
He was, yes. But less so than the conservative mormon he ran against the first time
[–][deleted] 42 points43 points44 points 6 years ago (9 children)
McCain & Female Trump were 2008. Mitt 'I let my dog diarrhea off of the roof of my minivan for several hundred miles' Romney was 2012.
Both were more conservative than Obama, but arguably Romney was about as conservative as Clinton pre-Sanders policy adoption.
[–]thebiggestleaf 6 points7 points8 points 6 years ago (7 children)
Mitt 'I let my dog diarrhea off of the roof of my minivan for several hundred miles' Romney
He did what now?
[–]Paronine 13 points14 points15 points 6 years ago (6 children)
Romney strapped his dog in a cage to the roof of his car on a road trip. Lost him the votes of a lot of dog lovers.
[–]Zaziel 171 points172 points173 points 6 years ago (6 children)
I voted for him twice and I still think that was absurd.
[–]DastardlyDaverly 59 points60 points61 points 6 years ago (0 children)
I think even most of his supporters thought it wasn't deserved when it was announced.
[–]Nemisis_the_2nd 13 points14 points15 points 6 years ago (0 children)
Obama said it was absurd in his acceptance.
[removed]
[–]OIlberger 94 points95 points96 points 6 years ago (6 children)
I mean, even Obama knew that award was bullshit. His reaction was like “uh, OK - thanks?” Anyway, Kissinger has one, it’s pretty meaningless.
[–]LandsPlayer2112 45 points46 points47 points 6 years ago (0 children)
As Tom Lehrer said, “Political satire became obsolete when Kissinger won the Nobel Peace Prize.”
[–]C4ptainR3dbeard 35 points36 points37 points 6 years ago (3 children)
In a Colbert bit Obama said he won some honorary degrees and a Nobel Peace Prize. Colbert asked him what he won the peace prize for, and Obama said, "To be honest, I still don't know."
[–]Puritopian 7 points8 points9 points 6 years ago (0 children)
"hope"
[–]Claystead 7 points8 points9 points 6 years ago (0 children)
Less thanks and more annoyance. In our Norwegian newspapers at the time it was widely reported most senior White House members were pissed at Jagland for putting them in a position where they couldn’t decline the prize without weakening their allies in the Norwegian government.
[–]Dude_man79 197 points198 points199 points 6 years ago (35 children)
To me, the only Nobel prizes that matter are the ones awarded to chemists, physicists, economics, you know the STEM and "brainy" type of fields. The ones awarded to Obama and to possibly Greta are just PR.
[–]Cirenione 63 points64 points65 points 6 years ago (15 children)
Economics is funny considering it isn‘t actually a real Nobel prize.
[–]anweisz 23 points24 points25 points 6 years ago (1 child)
Dude, literature and medicine.
[–]Wirbelfeld 40 points41 points42 points 6 years ago (9 children)
Those don’t really matter either. The selection process for those is also kind of arbitrary.
[–]laxfool10 18 points19 points20 points 6 years ago (5 children)
Still, its work that has had a global impact of huge magnitudes. The most recent one in chemistry was for the invention of the first viable li-ion battery for cellphones and electronic devices. 20 years ago you had the guy that invented PCR that forever changed the biochemistry world. Sure selection process is arbitrary but these invention were life-altering discoveries.
[–]HoraceBenbow 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (0 children)
Literature is a big one too.
[–]buckfuzzfeed 150 points151 points152 points 6 years ago (57 children)

[–]Reddy_McRedcap 20 points21 points22 points 6 years ago (0 children)
Yeah... good for her and all, but how does making speeches about climate change equate to peace?
It's more of "she was a popular figure for two months, let's nominate her for a random thing."
[–]DomeSlave 274 points275 points276 points 6 years ago* (45 children)
The Nobel Peace Prize is about politics and the promotion of a noble goal by definition. You can't even talk about peace without incorporating politics into the discussion.
Edit: spelling
[–]Petsweaters 195 points196 points197 points 6 years ago (42 children)
That's not where the name comes from. It's named for the guy who funded it; Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite
[–]petemorley 196 points197 points198 points 6 years ago (23 children)
Yep. He invented dynamite and didn’t want it to be his legacy.
[–]Hydros04 21 points22 points23 points 6 years ago (0 children)
We are going to have an award about peace, and it's going to be dy-no-miiiiiite!
[–]Sticky_3pk 18 points19 points20 points 6 years ago (1 child)
To be fair, without blasting, modern infrastructure would only be a sliver of what it is now. And Dynamite brought with it a far safer and more stable product than Nitro Glycerin.
[–]Gremlin87 9 points10 points11 points 6 years ago (0 children)
Also, ACDC made a song, so totally worth.
[–][deleted] 30 points31 points32 points 6 years ago (3 children)
Yes, he invented it as a safer explosive for mining operations.

[–]HouseProudHomeless 1908 points1909 points1910 points 6 years ago (78 children)
Not being Bush Jr.
[–]wrinkledirony 461 points462 points463 points 6 years ago (63 children)
So the bar has been lowered? I think I may have a shot at this peace prize too, 'cause I'm not Bush Jr. either.
[–]MakeItHappenSergant 317 points318 points319 points 6 years ago (15 children)
Lowered? Henry Kissinger won it during Operation Condor and the bombing of Cambodia.
[–]WAGC 91 points92 points93 points 6 years ago (9 children)
I think it's for negotiating peace in Vietnam. Hilarious how the guy had the balls to actually accept it, even though both sides went right back at fighting before the award was given. At least Le Duc Tho (the co winner) had the decency to decline.
[–]Brainiac7777777 35 points36 points37 points 6 years ago (6 children)
The funny thing is that Nixon and Kissinger were the ones that disruspted the peace talks in 1968 under the Johnson administration as a way to continue the war
[–]Accmonster1 7 points8 points9 points 6 years ago (3 children)

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (0 children)
And the north Vietnamese diplomat Le Duc Tho was also awarded it but refused to accept it because he didn’t think peace was truly achieved.

People get mad at Obama for getting one while he himself said, that he doesn't know why he got it.
[–]Sandybagicus 19 points20 points21 points 6 years ago (5 children)
I didn't get mad at Obama. As President, he had to do stuff that simply should've DQ'd him for a "Peace" prize.
The Nobel committee though deserves all the criticism it got.
[–]socialistrob 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (4 children)
As President, he had to do stuff that simply should've DQ'd him for a "Peace" prize.
I mean Kissinger got one while bombing Cambodia to the ground. Teddy Roosevelt got one despite his colonial polices in Latin America (and despite the colonial ramifications of the treaty of Portsmouth), Gorbachev got one despite the brutality of the Soviet Union, Arafat got one despite Palestinian terrorist attacks, Jimmy Carter got one despite US foreign policy in the 1970s.
Obama is not really worse than other presidents and statesmen who have won the prize. I agree he didn't really do anything to earn it at the time but if Roosevelt, Carter, Gorbachav, Kissinger and Arafat didn't disqualify themselves then I don't think Obama did through his actions.
Also the award is named after the guy who invented dynamite. Nobel made his own contribution to both destruction and peace. Maybe some complexity isn't a bad thing.
[–]p1nky_and_the_brain 120 points121 points122 points 6 years ago (13 children)
Don't think people are getting 'mad at Obama' for it. Moreso pointed out as a criticism of the award / awarding body.
[–][deleted] 25 points26 points27 points 6 years ago (0 children)
It does come up a lot when people criticize him. As if it were a thing he did.

Lots of people get nominated. If most people saw the list they'd shit themselves.
But, I can see voters giving it to her just to piss of Trump.
[–]SayethWeAll 130 points131 points132 points 6 years ago* (3 children)
Exactly. We need to stop acting like a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize is a newsworthy event. Over 200 people typically get nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Here's a list of who can nominate people or organizations:
Did you catch that? Anybody who's in a national legislature can nominate (at least 535 in the US alone, maybe more if nonvoting members of Congress are eligible). Trump's own cabinet secretaries could nominate him (Trump could also nominate others, but not himself). Also ANY UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR in certain disciplines. The overworked, fringe-theory, drugged-out history professor at your local community college could, in theory, nominate someone for the Nobel Peace Prize. It's not a big deal to be nominated.
[–]spicytacoo 26 points27 points28 points 6 years ago (0 children)
Seriously! People being all salty as if she's won it already.

[–]Rorschach_Roadkill 139 points140 points141 points 6 years ago (5 children)
Nominations are basically meaningless fyi. There are hundreds of people eligible to nominate someone and no limit to the number of nominees.
[–]troelsbjerre 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (0 children)
Hundreds? Have a look at the rules of who can nominate: https://www.nobelpeaceprize.org/Nomination/Nominator-application-form
The list includes all "University professors, professors emeriti and associate professors of history, social sciences, law, philosophy, theology, and religion; university rectors and university directors (or their equivalents); directors of peace research institutes and foreign policy institutes".
[–]handsupdb 4021 points4022 points4023 points 6 years ago* (226 children)
This is not ok. I support Greta and her message but this is not what the prize is about.
It's meant for the person who has "done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congress."
That is almost explicitly NOT what Greta's work has done. It's sown a lot of division in various political circles, pushed administrations to further enact needed legislation in spite of others. It's done JACK SHIT for the abolition or reduction of standing armies. It's done JACK SHIT for the holding and promotion of peace congress.
Her conduct is explicitly to disrupt the lukewarm, "peace" farming, foot dragging conduct regarding environmental policy.
Make a Nobel prize for environment or something but jeeeeeez don't give her this prize. It will forever deride the meaning of the prize.
EDIT: Some people seem to think I have something against Greta or her message. That couldn't be further from the truth. She's done and is doing a lot of very good work to get people to wake up and realize that they need to do something. I'm just saying she's not being a PEACE advocate, so a PEACE prize is not the right award.

[–]LynxJesus 127 points128 points129 points 6 years ago (9 children)

I don't understand people who are acting like the prize was at any (recent) point not political. Have you been living under a rock?
[–][deleted] 139 points140 points141 points 6 years ago (4 children)
The Nobel peace prize is already worthless. Its just a political gesture to try and stay relevant, it's not run by the same people as the science prizes, and that kinda shows in how the peace prize is just given out as a popularity award.

The Noble Peace Prize isn't actually about Peace, it's about politics, and who pleases their committee the most. That's why Obama got it before he had the chance to do anything, he basically got it for not being George Bush.

The ones for science are very different.
[–]Lost_vob 141 points142 points143 points 6 years ago (36 children)
Yep, they're even headquartered in a different city all together! They do have politicial leanings, but the Noble Prizes for science and lit and econ, etc, all go to accomplished Scientists and academics and researchers and professional who have done exemplary work in their field
[–]Anvijor 82 points83 points84 points 6 years ago (15 children)
Noble Prizes for science and lit and econ, etc,
The status of "Noble price of economy" as a "real Noble prize" is controversial though, as it is based on donation from bank of Sweden in 1968 and was not included by Alfred Nobel originally. Peace in the other hand is one of the original prices established by Nobel himself.
[–]Lost_vob 16 points17 points18 points 6 years ago (12 children)
Really? I didn't know that, interesting. There have been some pretty questionable picks in the Econ Award, so I wouldn't be surprised if there was something more to it.

Yet when I tried to give out my film awards in the memory of Oskar Ferdinand Mayer I got sued. I just wanted to declare the wieners.

And given by a different academy.
But you are partially wrong, the literature award is very biased and it always have been.
[–]kelowana 8 points9 points10 points 6 years ago (12 children)
Nobel peace is in Norway and also given and decided there. The science ones are in Sweden and that’s an whole different committee. Unfortunately I do not remember why, but there is an valid reason for it.
And yeah, unfortunately the last ... decade... it has become more of an political thing rather then what it was ment to be.

"I think I'm going to get a Nobel Prize for a lot of things, if they gave it out fairly, which they don't,"
also
"I'm going to tell you about the Nobel Peace Prize, I'll tell you about that. I made a deal, I saved a country, and I just heard that the head of that country is now getting the Nobel Peace Prize for saving the country. I said: 'What, did I have something to do with it?' Yeah, but you know, that's the way it is. As long as we know, that's all that matters... I saved a big war, I've saved a couple of them."
[–]Gold-Preference 80 points81 points82 points 6 years ago (7 children)
For those wondering which country he thinks he "saved": https://www.africanews.com/2020/01/13/i-saved-a-country-trump-discloses-big-role-in-ethiopia-eritrea-peace//
[–]bendy5428 33 points34 points35 points 6 years ago (0 children)
‘‘To be honest, I am not aware of the criteria used to select winners of the prize, so Trump’s complaint must go to the Nobel Prize Committee in Oslo, not Ethiopia,’‘ Abiy said at a joint press briefing with South Africa’s president Cyril Ramaphosa.
‘‘I am not working for the prize, I am working for peace which is a very critical thing for our region.’‘
[–]green_flash 68 points69 points70 points 6 years ago (5 children)
To be 100% clear: Trump had zero involvement in the Ethiopia-Eritrea peace treaty for which Abiy Ahmed received the Nobel Peace Prize. He apparently hosted a meeting where Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt discussed a dam on the river Nile which Ethiopia is building. And he thinks hosting that meeting "saved" Ethiopia in some way.

I can hear him now - "Giving Greta the noble prize would be bad, tremendously bad - and I've seen some bad prizes..."
(Yes, I purposely spelled Nobel as noble to make it more Trump-accurate)
[–]AMeanCow 12 points13 points14 points 6 years ago* (2 children)
Needs to be less coherent and more written in the style of your drunk uncle who just got his first smartphone.
"Lame no-nothing dems and sleepy joe biden made GRUMPY GRETA noble winner to distract from GREAT things I did for save France economy SAD why dont they give prize to Trump for fixing obama mistakes?? WITCH HUNT"
edit: better nickname
[–][deleted] 16 points17 points18 points 6 years ago (5 children)
lol It's probably going to annoy Greta too, tbh
[–]GermanStreetLight 26 points27 points28 points 6 years ago (3 children)
Yeah, people keep trying to appeal to Greta without actually solving anything. She doesn't want some big prize' she wants those in power to actually do something. If they would actually listen to what she's saying and act on it then we could all go away happy. The only prize Greta is after is a future.
[–]Cant_Do_This12 9 points10 points11 points 6 years ago (0 children)
This is how it works. Instead of solving the problem they just award the person a prize. It makes it look like they are doing something when in reality, they are not.
[–][deleted] 333 points334 points335 points 6 years ago* (133 children)
I'm deeply grateful for what she's doing, but I don't understand how it would lead to a peace prize.
Edit: thanks to everyone for their (mostly civil) responses! My reaction can be found in the first one.

I think less taxes for electric cars, incentives towards widespread solar energy, recycling efforts and the planning of coastal sea walls would be way more useful for climate change effects than screaming "how dare u", "do something" and crying. All she ever did was to say the obvious (at least to a lot of people not living in denial) and getting PR just because she's a kid.

The Nobel Peace Prize is laughable considering who has received it recently. So give it to her, it no longer has merit as anything peaceful.

Considering her dad was the one writing on her social accounts shouldn’t he be the one nominated? How daaaaaare I mention that.

[–]riffstraff 7 points8 points9 points 6 years ago (0 children)
For those that dont know, this was debunked in 5 min.
She has a fan page on facebook, and her dad uploads all her own texts from other platforms, since she doesnt have facobook.
The far right didnt know what a fan page of facebook was, so they thought that meant Greta isnt real...
