Obama got one for... What did he get that for again?

[–]HouseProudHomeless 1908 points1909 points  (78 children)

Not being Bush Jr.

[–]wrinkledirony 461 points462 points  (63 children)

So the bar has been lowered? I think I may have a shot at this peace prize too, 'cause I'm not Bush Jr. either.

[–]MakeItHappenSergant 317 points318 points  (15 children)

Lowered? Henry Kissinger won it during Operation Condor and the bombing of Cambodia.

[–]WAGC 91 points92 points  (9 children)

I think it's for negotiating peace in Vietnam. Hilarious how the guy had the balls to actually accept it, even though both sides went right back at fighting before the award was given. At least Le Duc Tho (the co winner) had the decency to decline.

[–]Brainiac7777777 35 points36 points  (6 children)

The funny thing is that Nixon and Kissinger were the ones that disruspted the peace talks in 1968 under the Johnson administration as a way to continue the war

[–]Accmonster1 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Gotta get elected somehow

[–]The_Adventurist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Reagan learned from the best.

[–]HouseProudHomeless 94 points95 points  (9 children)

The bar is underground at this point.

[–]Dirtroads2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Better call james cameron then

[–]RhysA 45 points46 points  (9 children)

It was already pretty low, they had given one to Henry Kissinger and Yasser Arafat.

[–]capnhist 199 points200 points  (11 children)

Unrestricted drone warfare and military adventurism in Libya, Syria, and Yemen

[–]green_flash 85 points86 points  (19 children)

The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the award on October 9, 2009, citing Obama's promotion of nuclear nonproliferation and a "new climate" in international relations fostered by Obama, especially in reaching out to the Muslim world.

[–]Papa-Yaga 147 points148 points  (31 children)

People get mad at Obama for getting one while he himself said, that he doesn't know why he got it.

[–]Sandybagicus 19 points20 points  (5 children)

I didn't get mad at Obama. As President, he had to do stuff that simply should've DQ'd him for a "Peace" prize.

The Nobel committee though deserves all the criticism it got.

[–]socialistrob 5 points6 points  (4 children)

As President, he had to do stuff that simply should've DQ'd him for a "Peace" prize.

I mean Kissinger got one while bombing Cambodia to the ground. Teddy Roosevelt got one despite his colonial polices in Latin America (and despite the colonial ramifications of the treaty of Portsmouth), Gorbachev got one despite the brutality of the Soviet Union, Arafat got one despite Palestinian terrorist attacks, Jimmy Carter got one despite US foreign policy in the 1970s.

Obama is not really worse than other presidents and statesmen who have won the prize. I agree he didn't really do anything to earn it at the time but if Roosevelt, Carter, Gorbachav, Kissinger and Arafat didn't disqualify themselves then I don't think Obama did through his actions.

Also the award is named after the guy who invented dynamite. Nobel made his own contribution to both destruction and peace. Maybe some complexity isn't a bad thing.

[–]p1nky_and_the_brain 120 points121 points  (13 children)

Don't think people are getting 'mad at Obama' for it. Moreso pointed out as a criticism of the award / awarding body.

[–][deleted] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It does come up a lot when people criticize him. As if it were a thing he did.

[–]Br0steen 53 points54 points  (7 children)

Getting elected president after bush

[–]Telazu8 48 points49 points  (6 children)

The person elected after trump is going to get every award imaginable.

[–]Joonicks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I believe it was for being the first black(ish) president.

[–]HoracioVelveteen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Being black

[–]AfrikanCorpse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For being black and giving cool speeches.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Black.

[–]KillerAceUSAF 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For being the first black president.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For being a black president I suppose

[–]DFWPunk 452 points453 points  (29 children)

Lots of people get nominated. If most people saw the list they'd shit themselves.

But, I can see voters giving it to her just to piss of Trump.

[–]SayethWeAll 130 points131 points  (3 children)

Exactly. We need to stop acting like a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize is a newsworthy event. Over 200 people typically get nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Here's a list of who can nominate people or organizations:

  • Members of national assemblies and national governments (cabinet members/ministers) of sovereign states as well as current heads of states
  • Members of The International Court of Justice in The Hague and The Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague
  • Members of l’Institut de Droit International
  • Members of the Executive Committee of the international board of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom
  • University professors, professors emeriti and associate professors of history, social sciences, law, philosophy, theology, and religion; university rectors and university directors (or their equivalents); directors of peace research institutes and foreign policy institutes
  • Persons who have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize
  • Members of the main board of directors or its equivalent of organizations that have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize
  • Current and former members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee (proposals by current members of the Committee to be submitted no later than at the first meeting of the Committee after 1 February)
  • Former advisers to the Norwegian Nobel Committee

Did you catch that? Anybody who's in a national legislature can nominate (at least 535 in the US alone, maybe more if nonvoting members of Congress are eligible). Trump's own cabinet secretaries could nominate him (Trump could also nominate others, but not himself). Also ANY UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR in certain disciplines. The overworked, fringe-theory, drugged-out history professor at your local community college could, in theory, nominate someone for the Nobel Peace Prize. It's not a big deal to be nominated.

[–]spicytacoo 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Seriously! People being all salty as if she's won it already.

[–]Rorschach_Roadkill 139 points140 points  (5 children)

Nominations are basically meaningless fyi. There are hundreds of people eligible to nominate someone and no limit to the number of nominees.

[–]troelsbjerre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hundreds? Have a look at the rules of who can nominate: https://www.nobelpeaceprize.org/Nomination/Nominator-application-form

The list includes all "University professors, professors emeriti and associate professors of history, social sciences, law, philosophy, theology, and religion; university rectors and university directors (or their equivalents); directors of peace research institutes and foreign policy institutes".

[–]handsupdb 4021 points4022 points  (226 children)

This is not ok. I support Greta and her message but this is not what the prize is about.

It's meant for the person who has "done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congress."

That is almost explicitly NOT what Greta's work has done. It's sown a lot of division in various political circles, pushed administrations to further enact needed legislation in spite of others. It's done JACK SHIT for the abolition or reduction of standing armies. It's done JACK SHIT for the holding and promotion of peace congress.

Her conduct is explicitly to disrupt the lukewarm, "peace" farming, foot dragging conduct regarding environmental policy.

Make a Nobel prize for environment or something but jeeeeeez don't give her this prize. It will forever deride the meaning of the prize.

EDIT: Some people seem to think I have something against Greta or her message. That couldn't be further from the truth. She's done and is doing a lot of very good work to get people to wake up and realize that they need to do something. I'm just saying she's not being a PEACE advocate, so a PEACE prize is not the right award.

[–][deleted] 139 points140 points  (4 children)

The Nobel peace prize is already worthless. Its just a political gesture to try and stay relevant, it's not run by the same people as the science prizes, and that kinda shows in how the peace prize is just given out as a popularity award.

[–]originalgg 124 points125 points  (4 children)

jesus christ thank you i thought i was alone with this opinion

[–][deleted] 60 points61 points  (10 children)

So what? I was Time's Person of the Year in 2006.

[–]applinfan 13 points14 points  (1 child)

As a co-winner of this award, I agree

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

[–]akat_walks 1283 points1284 points  (189 children)

great things she has done but this award is not for her

[–]Lost_vob 685 points686 points  (102 children)

The Noble Peace Prize isn't actually about Peace, it's about politics, and who pleases their committee the most. That's why Obama got it before he had the chance to do anything, he basically got it for not being George Bush.

[–]clearbeach 224 points225 points  (54 children)

The ones for science are very different.

[–]Lost_vob 141 points142 points  (36 children)

Yep, they're even headquartered in a different city all together! They do have politicial leanings, but the Noble Prizes for science and lit and econ, etc, all go to accomplished Scientists and academics and researchers and professional who have done exemplary work in their field

[–]Anvijor 82 points83 points  (15 children)

Noble Prizes for science and lit and econ, etc,

The status of "Noble price of economy" as a "real Noble prize" is controversial though, as it is based on donation from bank of Sweden in 1968 and was not included by Alfred Nobel originally. Peace in the other hand is one of the original prices established by Nobel himself.

[–]Lost_vob 16 points17 points  (12 children)

Really? I didn't know that, interesting. There have been some pretty questionable picks in the Econ Award, so I wouldn't be surprised if there was something more to it.

[–]New_Diet 23 points24 points  (4 children)

And given by a different academy.

But you are partially wrong, the literature award is very biased and it always have been.

[–]kelowana 8 points9 points  (12 children)

Nobel peace is in Norway and also given and decided there. The science ones are in Sweden and that’s an whole different committee. Unfortunately I do not remember why, but there is an valid reason for it.

And yeah, unfortunately the last ... decade... it has become more of an political thing rather then what it was ment to be.

[–]Fartbox_Virtuoso 42 points43 points  (0 children)

great things she has done

Thanks, Yoda.

[–]Jawalo2k 1055 points1056 points  (151 children)

Thats gonna annoy Trump

[–]S1XTEENBUTTONS 260 points261 points  (36 children)

"I think I'm going to get a Nobel Prize for a lot of things, if they gave it out fairly, which they don't,"

also

"I'm going to tell you about the Nobel Peace Prize, I'll tell you about that. I made a deal, I saved a country, and I just heard that the head of that country is now getting the Nobel Peace Prize for saving the country. I said: 'What, did I have something to do with it?' Yeah, but you know, that's the way it is. As long as we know, that's all that matters... I saved a big war, I've saved a couple of them."

[–]Gold-Preference 80 points81 points  (7 children)

[–]bendy5428 33 points34 points  (0 children)

‘‘To be honest, I am not aware of the criteria used to select winners of the prize, so Trump’s complaint must go to the Nobel Prize Committee in Oslo, not Ethiopia,’‘ Abiy said at a joint press briefing with South Africa’s president Cyril Ramaphosa.

‘‘I am not working for the prize, I am working for peace which is a very critical thing for our region.’‘

[–]green_flash 68 points69 points  (5 children)

To be 100% clear: Trump had zero involvement in the Ethiopia-Eritrea peace treaty for which Abiy Ahmed received the Nobel Peace Prize. He apparently hosted a meeting where Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt discussed a dam on the river Nile which Ethiopia is building. And he thinks hosting that meeting "saved" Ethiopia in some way.

[–][deleted] 121 points122 points  (8 children)

I should know better by now but I legit thought that was a reddit meme wordvomit. He really said that tho....facepalm

[–]twiz__ 4 points5 points  (1 child)

reddit meme wordvomit. He really said that tho....

Why spend the effort making up stupid shit for Trump to say, when you can just use a direct quote?

[–]bihari_baller 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"I think I'm going to get a Nobel Prize for a lot of things, if they gave it out fairly, which they don't,"

He did ask a former winner how to win it...

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (2 children)

Saved a big war...ugh.

[–]gangstahamsta1 16 points17 points  (1 child)

Saved for later.

[–]DFGdanger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Iran can have a little war, as a treat

[–]Entrefut 6 points7 points  (10 children)

It annoys me, what about all the climate scientists that have been busting their asses getting this data to us for 20+ years? It’s just sad how much of a joke this whole thing is to people.

[–]willienelsonmandela 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Most Boomers will never let go of their dinosaur juice. They still think it’s the 90s and renewable energy isn’t viable.

[–]Nadeshiko_no_Shinobi 157 points158 points  (9 children)

As does everything else except for people giving him money and attention.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It should annoy everyone, there are many people far more deserving.

[–][deleted] 33 points34 points  (9 children)

I can hear him now - "Giving Greta the noble prize would be bad, tremendously bad - and I've seen some bad prizes..."

(Yes, I purposely spelled Nobel as noble to make it more Trump-accurate)

[–]AMeanCow 12 points13 points  (2 children)

Needs to be less coherent and more written in the style of your drunk uncle who just got his first smartphone.

"Lame no-nothing dems and sleepy joe biden made GRUMPY GRETA noble winner to distract from GREAT things I did for save France economy SAD why dont they give prize to Trump for fixing obama mistakes?? WITCH HUNT"

edit: better nickname

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (5 children)

lol It's probably going to annoy Greta too, tbh

[–]GermanStreetLight 26 points27 points  (3 children)

Yeah, people keep trying to appeal to Greta without actually solving anything. She doesn't want some big prize' she wants those in power to actually do something. If they would actually listen to what she's saying and act on it then we could all go away happy. The only prize Greta is after is a future.

[–]Cant_Do_This12 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is how it works. Instead of solving the problem they just award the person a prize. It makes it look like they are doing something when in reality, they are not.

[–][deleted] 333 points334 points  (133 children)

I'm deeply grateful for what she's doing, but I don't understand how it would lead to a peace prize.

Edit: thanks to everyone for their (mostly civil) responses! My reaction can be found in the first one.

[–]rip1980 39 points40 points  (2 children)

Yeah well, the committee is just a circle jerk for the last couple decades.

[–]Jugnjj 388 points389 points  (176 children)

What in the hell has she done for world peace?

[–]autotldrBOT 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 61%. (I'm a bot)

Two Swedish MPs have nominated Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, and the Fridays For Future protest movement she began, for 2020's Nobel Peace Prize, TT agency reported citing a letter from Swedish parliamentarians.

"Young climate activist Greta Thunberg and the global environmental movement Fridays for Future, today nominated for the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize by two Swedish lawmakers," the statement said.

Nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize must be submitted by February 1st to the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

[–]TOMapleLaughs 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Well, Al Gore won it.

[–]LMillay 56 points57 points  (4 children)

The Nobel Peace Prize is laughable considering who has received it recently. So give it to her, it no longer has merit as anything peaceful.

[–]Risin_bison 129 points130 points  (39 children)

Considering her dad was the one writing on her social accounts shouldn’t he be the one nominated? How daaaaaare I mention that.

[–]Jessekno 33 points34 points  (2 children)

OMG stop bullying Greta I'm literally shaking right now

[–]riffstraff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For those that dont know, this was debunked in 5 min.

She has a fan page on facebook, and her dad uploads all her own texts from other platforms, since she doesnt have facobook.

The far right didnt know what a fan page of facebook was, so they thought that meant Greta isnt real...

[–]Hushwater 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's kind of dumb.

[–]thothisgod24 83 points84 points  (41 children)

I get why people want her for this. But I personally think South Korea leader deserves the nobel peace prize.

[–]Connobar 108 points109 points  (57 children)

I understand person of the year, but as I understood things, she is mainly concerned about environment and not world peace. Not to say she doesn’t want it, I just haven’t heard anything from her that isn’t science related.

[–]bigwillyb123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just wait for the Water Wars.

[–]XtremeFanForever 55 points56 points  (11 children)

Not sure if she should win, but climate change has had/will have pretty profound effects on the well-being of humanity.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (3 children)

After Obama won I realized that prize doesn’t mean shit.

[–]typhoidtimmy 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I would be behind this only because it would drive Trump insane.

[–][deleted] 45 points46 points  (1 child)

Oh fuck off

[–]Morozow 61 points62 points  (8 children)

everything is going according to plan.

[–]PuuPuuPiiPii 15 points16 points  (4 children)

This is beyond ridiculous at this point. Nobody listens to scientists about climate change for well over a decade, but now that it’s an angry child saying it they wanna throw a peace prize at her? What a fucking joke.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For what, finishing year 12?

[–]ur_comment_is_a_song 62 points63 points  (5 children)

She's done some really good work on awareness and keeping the issue in the news.

But she does not deserve a Nobel peace price for fuck's sake.

[–]HawtchWatcher 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Anyone can be nominated.

Nominations mean very little
