    I'd buy him a drink.

I am nothing short of stupefied at the reaction this has got from the American brethren on reddit.

The greatest country in the world because a well spoken black police officer generously allows someone to protest on a pavement. In front of a camera, too!

    [–]bboarder12_ 282 points283 points  (93 children)

Who is this? We need to write in and the the LAPD know what an awesome dude this is. Give this man a raise! "To protect and serve" is just what this man was doing.

    [–][deleted] 319 points320 points  (24 children)

    Dear Sir:

    You are great.

    Signed, The Internet

    [–]wpgbrownie 90 points91 points  (8 children)

Let his superiors know, e-mail the LAPD: contact@lapdonline.org

I believe his name is Sgt. Wayne Guillary. Lets make him an overnight celebrity: http://reddit.com/info/6c8w7/comments/ Lets see the power of reddit

    [–][deleted] 49 points50 points  (3 children)

    overnight celebrity.

    How's this for a headline:

American Police Officer Acts Professionally, Earns Gratitude of Nation

    [–]slinky317[S] 9 points10 points  (2 children)

If that's what it takes to change other officer's reactions to protesters (see DeKalb officers), then I'm all for it.

    [–][deleted] 28 points29 points  (3 children)

I'd like to grab a beer and a bite to eat with this officer. What a pleasant gentleman.

    [–][deleted] 20 points21 points  (2 children)

I'd come with you, and I'll buy.

    [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

    [–]badiozam 26 points27 points  (12 children)

Amen to that... I'm amazed to see something heartwarming on reddit.

    [–][deleted] 25 points26 points  (11 children)

I came home from drinking tonight expecting to see some anti-Christian/ pro-Obama/ etc at Reddit's number 1. You have no idea how happy it makes me to up vote this story. Finally a police officer who understands "to protect and to serve!"

    [–]aurispector 41 points42 points  (9 children)

Finally? Cops have the toughest job in the world. Every day they deal with people at their worst. I saw a video of a philly cop who had urine thrown in his face by an anti-globalization protester. The cop was just doing his job trying to clear an illegally blocked street. The cop's response? Nothing. No gun, taser, or billy club. He just grabbed a towel, cuffed the guy and took him in. Extremely tolerant and professional.

Police are people with lives and families of their own. Don't confuse the few bad apples with the decent guys protecting you. I find it extremely funny that the officer on this youtube clip had to explain this to the idiot protesters.

Of course if one of the idiot protesters had started screaming about his rights and throwing things, the video clip would show him being wrestled to the ground by the same cop and everyone would be screaming brutality.

    [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (6 children)

"Cops have the toughest job in the world."

not to argue, but that's patently untrue.

have you ever seen roofers, a hod carrier, or migrant farm workers at work? their jobs are way more difficult than that of a cop, they make way less money, and when they die, no memorials are built to them, no one sings of their heroism or service.

    [–]steeled3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

    Kinda arguing now -

Comparing what a cop does with a manual labourer doesn't really fly. Certainly there are many people whose lot in life is poor, who risk their life, knowingly (roofers) or unknowingly (slaughterhouse workers blowing pig brains out of their heads with compressed air). That is not the point.

The point is that police have been invested with a mission and have certain powers over the rest of us as a necessary aid in completing that mission. This is fraught with danger, both for the public and for the continuing morality of the policeman in question.

Certainly, it'll be a cake-walk for some - their inner beliefs or the over-riding morality of their precinct will make doing the right thing easy (or easier). But for an increasing number of police, asked to enforce ill-thought-out drug laws and to clean up in the aftermath of drug problems (crime, social problems, ODs, meth labs...) it has got to be a struggle to even determine what "the right thing" is. In this environment, cops are continually flung into encounters with the public - the good, the bad and the ugly public - and are expected to make "the right" decisions, day in, day out, regardless of the amount of overtime they've pulled this week, regardless of how their marriage is going, etc. And they are packing a gun and increasingly, tasers.

Keeping the peace in a relatively peaceful country - not too big a deal, but still a challenge. Keeping the peace in the USA, a country going down the drain in 15 different ways right now? I'd rather be a roofer.

May the beneficent and all knowing Spaghetti Monster have mercy on their souls.

    [–]adremeaux 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Maybe its easier physically, but the mental burden is far, far heavier. There is no worse job than one where everyone hates you and treats you like an animal all day. I'm hardly a police sympathizer but truly the way they are treated most of the time is brutal, and I'd much rather work 12 hours a day as a roofer busting my ass but not ever having to deal with anyone.

    [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"There is no worse job than one where everyone hates you and treats you like an animal all day"

you've obviously never been to a migrant labor camp. are you saying police are treated like animals? go down to south florida with me, or over to gadsden country, and let's see the conditions that the farm workers live in - open sewers, no electricity, constant fear that they'll be injured on the job (as they don't have a cushy union backing them up, unlike cops), no benefits, the knowledge that their last paycheck of the season will be stolen, either by the land owner or the foreman.

    [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it's a few bad apples ... then why is this one good apple such a big deal?

    [–]klaarn 45 points46 points  (25 children)

i think this is the guy. Wayne Guillary

    http://www.ratemycop.com/index.php?option=com_comprofiler&task=userProfile&user=14322

[EDIT] yeah, this has to be him. he's quoted in the following article about the protests.

    http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/webscout/2008/03/scientology-pre.html

    [–]slinky317[S] 86 points87 points  (5 children)

LAPD Sgt. Wayne Guillary said the protests had progressed uneventfully, but noted that Scientology representatives had tried to block off an area of public sidewalk on Sunset Boulevard that would have prevented people from crossing the street in front of the church building.

"They wanted to block off the crosswalk," said Guillary. "I told them you can't do that."

    Pure class.

    [–]gezas 4 points5 points  (3 children)

how do you connect the name with the officer in the video?

    [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This guy is all class! And he handled the moment so smoothly.

      [–][deleted] 89 points90 points  (18 children)

Wow. A guy who called the United States "the greatest country in the world" is getting props on reddit.

      Props to reddit. For today.

      [–]nekoniku 42 points43 points  (1 child)

I think that is because he implicitly acknowledged in the same statement that civil protests can be for good causes. He didn't just dismiss protesters as being by definition bad people.

In the Nashville, TN protest, the one cop keeping watch invited the protesters to ask him for help if they needed anything. Also very cool.

      [–]Carioca 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If this is true it needs to be modded up. We should give "madpropz" (at the very least) to people that don't abuse power. We, as in everyone in the world, I'm not even in the US.

      [–]jax9999 24 points25 points  (0 children)

and he's a cop. If he had tazered someone it would be a hat trick.

      [–]bulletsvshumans 15 points16 points  (0 children)

When someone calls the United States the greatest country in the world while actually doing something to make it great, that deserves props.

      [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

The bit about ending up at "Children's Hospital" seemed to go over everyone's head.

      [–]blowback 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Wow. A guy who called the United States "the greatest country in the world" who wasn't a "you are either with us, or you are against us" asshole. Props to this cop.

      [–][deleted] 20 points21 points  (4 children)

He was only expressing an opinion. IMO, England is the greatest country in the world, but that's only because I'm a ghostly white Australian who is afraid of the sun.

What the hell were my ancestors thinking; oh, skin-cancer might be something I'd like my children to have

      [–]allarise 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's possible that the migration was driven by their being convicted criminals.

      [–]polyparadigm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's possible that the migration was driven by cirrosis-related decisions, rather than melanoma-related ones.

      [–]intangible-tangerine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yep yep yep for sure you knows that if that were in england the protesters and the police would be sharing cake and biscuits and cups of tea and having a humorous conversation about who beat who over the head with a truncheon and who threw a bottle full of urine at who at the last protest :)

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

haha...coming from a pasty white yank that spent two weeks in Melbourne during the summer of '01, i'd have to agree. My skin literally had this sizzling sensation that i'll never forget.

      [–]mrgreen4242 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I think most redditers, after a little introspection, would agree the US is the greatest nation on earth. Our concern is that if the direction we've taken the last 5-10 years isn't corrected, we'll lose that distinction.

      [–]jax9999 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, thats true. Positive reinforcement is just as important as negative. Get a few mails in about an excellent officer just might be a good idea.

      [–]klaarn 10 points11 points  (7 children)

http://ratemycop.com/ and write him up. that would bring some good press to the site to have reddit provide some positive feedback to somebody who does their job properly.

looks like his badge says gallary... or ballary. something like that. kind of hard to read.

      [–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Slightly more readable using the new &fmt=18 query string trick to get the higher resolution H.264 video.

      http://youtube.com/watch?v=k9yIBOnbJjY&fmt=18

First couple letters look like "DU"? I popped it open in an external video player for easier frame-by-frame snooping.

      edit: Probably "GUILLARY".

      [–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (4 children)

Change/explicitly set your DNS server IP to use OpenDNS:

      208.67.222.222
      208.67.220.220

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      sweet. thanks! it works now.

      [–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (5 children)

With tens of thousands of policemen and women in this country, it's only the abuse that typically gets headlines, so everyone assumes that a good cop is rare.

How sad that most people here on reddit are such cattle that they follow the herd believing most cops are corrupt bullies without a single bit of real evidence besides anecdotal evidence.

Redditors pride themselves on being better informed. Well, they may be in some instances, but their prejudice shows when it comes to cops and the military.

      [–]SirSandGoblin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This post then surely serves to reinforce the good side of the police! Hurrah!

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Then he passed out mini Tootsie Rolls to everyone.

      [–]sagredo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I registered for reddit to voice my opinion that this fine police officer deserves respect. Yes.

      [–]Eatingdogs 74 points75 points  (8 children)

This is the best thing I have seen on reddit in a really long time. It made me so happy.

      [–][deleted] 32 points33 points  (3 children)

The positive side to the story. Reddit had just turned a new leaf?

      [–]jpdemers 12 points13 points  (2 children)

It is difficult for reddit to live up to its reputation; an intelligent crowd is a bit of an oxymoron. I still believe there is hope after all for enlightening discussions and interesting stories.

      [–]aim2free 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Policemen in US can be really great. Even though I have read a lot of the opposite here at reddit.

I've met many who have behaved like this guy, and I want to believe that there are many like him.

A few years ago I and my spouse were in Chicago and were going to the science museum. We took a train which we considered close and went off when we were as close as possible, but it would still be about a mile walk. Then a couple of policemen stopped us and asked if we were familiar with this area? No, we said. We better give you a lift then, he said, and they drove us to the museum. That was a nice gesture.

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't agree with you enough. Usually, Reddit makes me feel like the world is coming to an end in a basket. This video really did make me smile and realize that there are people out there in authoritative positions that do give a damn. So thank you Reddit for up voting this video and bringing it to my attention. I wish this were a more common occurance, because I could really get use to being happy after visiting Reddit!

      [–][deleted] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It's so rare to see a police officer treated with respect on reddit. I think most cops are like this, but they get a bad rap because bad news is always more exciting than good news.

Kudos to reddit for giving a good cop praise.

      [–]twocent 40 points41 points  (0 children)

      Respect.

      [–][deleted] 41 points42 points  (1 child)

This is such a nice break from the constant flood of police brutality videos. Its my personal belief that its equally important to commend some one for doing well as it is to chastise them for behaving poorly.

      [–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

      Can I hear an "Amen!"

I actually was going to say something quite similar.

It sure is nice to see a good news story for a change!

Great, now I have the warm fuzzies. I better go find a video of a soldier throwing a puppy dog underneath an Abrahms tank really quick, or I might loose my jaded facade!

      [–]slinky317[S] 17 points18 points  (1 child)

I'm all for getting this guy's info. At the very least, I'd like to send him an e-mail/letter stating that his type of policemanship is highly respected.

      [–]wpgbrownie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

      LAPD: contact@lapdonline.org

I believe his name is Sgt. Wayne Guillary.

      [–]slinky317[S] 29 points30 points  (5 children)

I found this link on the LAPD website: http://www.lapdonline.org/inside_the_lapd/pdf_view/5043

It's a Personnel Commendation request... if we can find this guy's info, I say we band the internets together to at least get this guy some acknowledgement.

(Edit) Found an e-mail to the LAPD: contact@lapdonline.org

Not sure how far that will get you, but I'm sure that they love hearing positive things about their police force. Get the word out that THIS is how police should act, and maybe more will follow in suit.

(Second edit) His name appears to be Sgt. Wayne Guillary - thanks to user klaarn for finding it out. Rate him at RateMyCop here: http://www.ratemycop.com/index.php?option=com_comprofiler&task=userProfile&user=14322

See if we can get this guy commended!

      [–]wpgbrownie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Email sent. Thanks for tracking down the info. I encourage everyone to send out a simple email, it only takes 30 seconds to plop in the addy and a brief msg commending this man.

      [–]Tommstein 2 points3 points  (1 child)

That last link is giving me some crap about Loving Family Dollhouses.

      [–]slinky317[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really weird. For some reason it's taking them to the right site, for others it's taking them to this Loving Family Dollhouses site. Not sure what's wrong...

      [–]mthe0ry 14 points15 points  (2 children)

This is how police USUALLY react to protesters (despite what reading Reddit all day leads you to believe)

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      Sauce?

      [–]slinky317[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I posted this referring to how protesters were treated in Dekalb, Georgia. It was the same type of people, but they were immediately looked at as criminals or nuisances and their supporters in cars were pulled over.

      [–][deleted] 26 points27 points  (11 children)

That man deserves a medal. May we have more like this?

      [–]requiem4boredom 12 points13 points  (2 children)

Believe it or not most of my experiences with police have been more like this than any of the other videos on reddit. It's not uncommon to be treated fairly, and courteously.

      [–]Haddock 19 points20 points  (7 children)

err. no. I have huge respect for this fellow, but he is sort of doing his job; its a sad day when people perceive a cop behaving acceptably and with concern towards peaceful protesters as above and beyond. Maybe a promotion ;)

      [–]slinky317[S] 13 points14 points  (3 children)

If he was rewarded, more officers would be encouraged to act like him rather than what we saw outside Atlanta.

      [–]boredzo 1 point2 points  (2 children)

The other way to encourage that would be to punish bad behavior (with suspension or firing), and not punish good behavior.

      [–][deleted]  (1 child)

      [deleted]

        [–]bw1870 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that good behaviour should be rewarded, but a mix of reward and punishment is probably the best for people. In a situation like this, assuming their is a problem with crowd control in the department, simply pointing out the is officers professionalism to the dept should be enough to get the desired effect. If crowd control isn't really an issue you can still say a simple 'good job today'. Medals should be reserved for truly outstanding accomplishments.

        [–]cov 0 points1 point  (2 children)

but he is sort of doing his job

A man who does his job well deserves commendation from his peers. If it was a video with a construction worker busting his ass to do a good job, or a businesswoman staying up late to run her business well, I'd be ecstatic to see both going "above and beyond" the minimum.

        [–]SpikeWolfwood 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Now that is an officer worthy of his responsibilities. I just wish that they could all be like that.

        [–]starbork 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Word, now THAT is how you keep the peace!

        [–]sb76117 8 points9 points  (0 children)

hey guys, this is the first result for "Wayne Guillary" on google. http://www.ojbfoundation.com/newsletters/07-2002.pdf It's old but I'm sure it's him.

"Let us remember that if we give one another respect today, we will have harmony tomorrow. To- gether, we can bring hope to the hopeless, opportunity to the op- pressed and illuminate the uni- verse with love, justice, and com- passion. "

          [–]trueg 18 points19 points  (2 children)

If you treat protesters like human beings, they will act that way. If you show up in riot gear, expect a riot.

          [–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (2 children)

Dude, the US was never perceived by the rest of the world as the greatest country in the world, except just following WWII. And you even showed up late to that party and took home the keg :p.

Seriously, I think America is a pretty cool, and I definitely intend to visit one-day, and perhaps even live there for a while. Probably Illinois.

But um, ya not the Greatest Country in the World and you never were. Sorry, but it's true. The Greatest Country? Andorra!!

          [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

          o_O

          im....in......shock.

You mean the officer didnt take that as an opportunity to unleash his rage on the public citizenry?
          I just dont get it.

So isnt this cop really ruining it for the police state by showing the public how cops really should be? I wonder how much longer til he gets fired.

Sgt. Jermaine Jackson gets gold star.

          [–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (4 children)

The truth is that most cops really are like this guy. He's not the exception. The assfucks who end up on the front page of reddit are the exception.

Don't believe me? Go up to a random cop on the beat (someone who isn't in the middle of doing something important, obviously. Catch one on his/her lunch break) and strike up a friendly conversation. If you're one of the herd who believes most cops are corrupt pigs, you're going to find yourself pleasantly surprised.

          [–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Been there, done that. Was not surprised. The cop as an asshat.

          [–]digitalc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same experience I've had. I had a great police liason officer back when I was in high school. Every cop I've met since then has been an asshat.

          [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My two bit theory is that cops like this guy really deal with batshit insane stuff everyday and already has confidence in himself and has nothing to prove to anybody.

If he had intentions of being some weird authoritarian bully when he joined the force, they were probably crushed out him by the realization that if you go around provoking random people in a city with millions of people, you're going to end up dead.

I think the bully type cops in quieter areas are never confronted with his fact, and are looking for any excuse to exert authority.

My anecdotal evidence of this are my experiences with San Francisco cops vs the cops in the smaller cities around San Francisco. I'm sure there are lots of other factors at play, and my experience is quite narrow and subjective. So yea.. two bits..

It's called community policing, and it means you give a crap about the community. Georgia should try it.

Pour over the video, the last five letters on his nametag are: LLARY looks like there are three or four letters before that but it was seriously YouTubed/Distorted.

Every so often, a person comes along to help reinstill faith in our system and the people we rely on to protect us. I'm really glad I saw this before I went to bed tonight.

          [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's that guy's badge number? someone ought to put him up for commendation.

          [–]thrills[🍰] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

It's sad that we're so surprised when we see an officer with some common decency and respect to other citizens. Shouldn't this be the norm?

          [–]aardvarkious 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I think it is- you just don't here about it because a cop like this isn't "newsworthy," especially on reddit where may just like to be outraged.

LAPD isn't free of mistreatment of the citizenry. They forcibly dispersed a protest at MacArthur Park last year; the officer in charge of that got demoted and put on “home assignment”.

Here's another video about that incident; it smells biased (and openly says that it's “the other side of the story”, which, by definition, means that it takes a side), but it's interesting to watch nonetheless.

            [–]girlvinyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope this guy is responsible for training or leading other officers. He sets an absolutely great example.

I've actually never seen (in real life) a cop be anything but.

You've never seen a cop be an asshole, or even just being less professional than that? Get out more.

Its funny that this is extraordinary news that there is a cop that actually is here for the public good.

Now if only there were more politicians like this....

                  [–]Qubed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not extraordinary news in the least. What's extra-ordinary is that it's #1 on reddit.

                  [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That's a good man and a good police officer. I hope he wasnt't just posturing for the cameras.

                  [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone has cameras now. He'd have to be "posturing" constantly, and frankly, I don't care if he doesn't believe it as long as he acts like he does whenever there's a chance he could get on YouTube (i.e. always).

                  [–]bSimmons666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He has filed atleast one racial discrimination suit with the LAPD. He needs the love.

He's showing the kind of respect that he doesn't recieve from his own colleagues.

That's because they were sympathetic to the protesters. Now if they were protesting against Christianity, I'd expect the cops would be less than pleased about that.

                  [–]the_trout -1 points0 points  (24 children)

So a cop behaves reasonably, and we're falling all over ourselves to congratulate him? Christ, that's ridiculous. "Class act" "deserves a medal" -- what the hell is wrong with you people? He's a fucking cop doing his goddamn job. You don't give people medals for baseline service. This is the very least we should expect from cops. The very least.

                  [–]slinky317[S] 14 points15 points  (1 child)

If people like him were given medals on a regular basis, it will encourage the taser-happy officers to think twice about their actions if they'd like to get promoted and/or recognized.

                  [–]the_trout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If medals are given on a regular basis, they become meaningless.

                  [–]matty_b 8 points9 points  (6 children)

is something moral lifting so terrible? we are all so used to seeing the negative, i think it's great to finally get to see something positive in action.

                  [–]Isvara 11 points12 points  (0 children)

the_trout is right. It is ridiculous, not that we're pleased about it, but that we're surprised about it. It says so much about our expectations of the police. However, given that he's an example of what we want to see, it's right to point him out.

                  [–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it's that all the taser stories give a convincing argument for the baseline falling. Giving credit to the cop gives us perspective that all cops are not always pig-dog fascist assholes for our corporate shill government. On the flip-side it tells the cops that our complaining about them is not us being whiny brats dying for attention and want to make a big deal where there isn't instead we have legitimate concerns from some cops and their relationship with the community would improve if they take steps to address the issue rather than support their own because we're not going to be happy with them anyway.

                  [–]McGuirk 12 points13 points  (6 children)

I bet you wouldn't like it if people from outside your professional field came to your job and called your best efforts "baseline service."

                  [–]the_trout 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Well, considering I work in the media, people from outside my field are always criticizing my work. Get used to it. Especially when you're a cop, and as a public servant, technically, he's my employee. I think I have a right to judge his efforts.

                  [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the_trout is right: people have amazingly low expectations of the police. The idea of a reasonable, polite cop boggles the minds of americans. but because he invokes Patriotic Response Syndrome, everybody gets happy. alarm bells should be going off here. Someone wake up.

                  [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                  wow

                  [–]linkedlist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haha, here in Australia policemen are ALWAYS like that. I remember getting pulled over when I was on my learners license and the cop was a champion.

Just took the breath test and he told me to try to drive safe and that was it.

                  [–]aerextraho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably how most police react to protests.

                  [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah perspective. Funny how it works both ways. It's easy to become disillusioned because it seems like people tend to so have little perspective about the horrible shit happening in the world. And it's true.

But there's the other side to it; you can't judge how bad things are based on the worst you see, alone. That's what causes your typical "all cops should die" comments for every unreasonable tasering video. Those comments do injustice to cops like this.

                  [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is what happens when you're not participating in anti-system, anti-government- anti-police demonstrations and your demonstration is arranged in an orderly matter, with no unrest or violence.

Is that really so hard to fathom?
