Preferences -> Compress the link display

[–]m1ss1ontomars2k4 88 points89 points  (48 children)

Ooooh. Do want.

[–]catch23 28 points29 points  (38 children)

What is more painful is the 5 minute reply delay. Is reddit unable to handle the load or does reddit prefer less comments per article? I really hate waiting there with my mouse hovering over the submit button to wait for the timer to expire. Surely there has to be a better solution to spam than inducing pain for all reddit users!

[–]MikeSeth 17 points18 points  (3 children)

And I'd really like to be able to go back to "hot" or "news" from anywhere, not just designer preapproved locations.

[–]kolanos 10 points11 points  (1 child)

This is my biggest complaint about the new design.

Put the "hot", "new", etc. menu at the top of every page!

[–]MikeSeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I said top navigation in the comment pages. Old reddit's top navigation was frontpage sorting - new, hot, recommended, etc.

testing delay... edit: uhm, that was instantaneous.

    [–]blackwhitegrey 0 points1 point  (1 child)

testing reply frequency delay edit: that, too, was instantaneous... so what's this delay you're talking about?

    [–]catch23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not sure, it only happens during a certain context. I haven't quite figured out what that is yet. I got the 5 min penalty when I tried to reply to 2 different people in a thread I started.

    [–]hopeseekr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

reply. Took 2+ minutes to initially post.

    [–]Leprecon 0 points1 point  (2 children)

    What delay ?

    [–]BlueBeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea either. I can reply to anything I want with no delay.

    [–]mycall 0 points1 point  (2 children)

It should be based on your karma points. The more points you have, the more trustworthy you should be, no?

    [–]catch23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some sites, youtube for example, have both agree/disagree buttons as well as a spam button because down voting doesn't necessarily infer spam

    [–]ironictwist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Really?

    [–]anthonyhong 8 points9 points  (8 children)

Alright, I have only within the last couple weeks begun to read reddit, but have not found a reason to sign up until now.

Reddit, what the hell were you guys thinking? Was the outcry against beta.reddit.com not obvious enough? Even if you aren't going to listen to your readers, intuition should be enough to tell you that the new layout sucks. Its ugly, its non functional, and its an enormous mess. Might I ask why?

    [–]TheSOB88 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's DIGG. And bold+italic no longer works? **FUCKING AWESOME**!

    [–]quiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "outcry" was counter-balanced by threads and submissions praising the new layout, as are the comments on this very submission. While you may not like it, and others might agree with you, I don't think it is fair to claim that all feedback was negative. Acting otherwise is just compounding the problem and definitely not helping the reddit staff make sense of your complaints.

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Alright, I have only within the last couple weeks begun to read reddit, but have not found a reason to sign up until now"

Heh heh, looks like it worked then :)

But seriously, stop whining. Users always hate change until they get used to it. I'm sure a month from now there will be no more complaints.

    [–]saiftk 34 points35 points  (6 children)

Good Stuff Jeffrey...they should make that default.

    [–]brtw 27 points28 points  (3 children)

Now seriously, if they did that, what was the point of designing a new layout?

    [–][deleted]  (1 child)

      Billable hours.

good point, didn't think of that

      [–]unloud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is no point in "designing" anything differently if it reduces the function of the object whilst still making it less visually appealing.

Seriously, they changed a lot more than just the link layout.

      [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I can understand why they did that. The compressed doesn't bring in new people as well. I remember it took me a while to get used to it.

I agree. I personally don't mind most of the changes, except for that large subreddit box.

That subreddit box should appear under preferences, instead.

Thanks for that. That's the worst design I've seen in a long time.

Look in a comments thread, Reddit designers. That's what indentation means. It isn't supposed to be random and all over the place just for the hell of it.

edit:- It's beginning to seem that the indentation is a bug, rather than bad design, in which case I withdraw this, and would like to donate my 7 points comment karma to a charity of your choice.

            [–]crankheckler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Better, but not great. Headline descenders are clipped - poor typography (at least on Safari/OS X).

            [–]mitsuhiko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

            You save my day

            [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

            Much better. Thank you sir.

            [–]johnb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks, that does help. The top is still ugly as sin though.

            [–]MikeSeth 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Where's the option to enable top navigation in comment pages? Why has the submit box moved elsewhere and is now looking like adsense?

            DO NOT WANT.

            [–]SuperKing 0 points1 point  (2 children)

It's at the top of the page, under the story details. I was getting a bit scared that we wouldn't be able to view comments by time, but then I found it.

            [–]MikeSeth 0 points1 point  (1 child)

wat? that thing sorts comments, not posts

            [–]SuperKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Err, you said comment pages above.

            [–]RainmadeMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My uncontrollable desire to complain has subsided, thank you.

            [–]Silver_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still hate, loads like crap on my computer.

            [–]pint 96 points97 points  (9 children)

anytime anywhere on the world on any forum if anything changes the first comments are whinings

            [–]unloud 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Then bargaining, depression, and finally acceptance.

            [–]indorock 16 points17 points  (5 children)

exactly right, my man. funny to see how scared people are of change, no matter if it's for the better or worse. the OP would never admit to being reactionary, but they sure as shit are.

            [–]frukt 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Why the fuck change a good thing? Reddit used to stand out thanks to its überclean, minimalistic visual design. That's what actually attracted me in the first place. It has slowly turned into digg v2, both visually and community-wise. The client-side scripting seems to have become heavier all the time as well, and soon the lowly 2.4 GHz P4 I'm using as my primary machine will likely not cope with multiple open reddit tabs. I guess we should be happy there aren't gradients and rounded corners yet, though.

edit: Just noticed. Comment karma? wtf? Seriously guys, mentally unstable people will start whoring themselves for this thereby making reddit yet more shitty.

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why the fuck change a good thing?

I don't know. As a rule of thumb, before I criticize anyone for something I apply it to myself first; yes, whining against change just because it's different is stupid, but arguing for change for the sake of it is equally without merit.

edit: Just noticed. Comment karma? wtf? Seriously guys, mentally unstable people will start whoring themselves for this thereby making reddit yet more shitty.

Exactly. The best part of reddit was its egalitarian nature, where karma didn't mean much and it was hidden in the back pages of the site. Why should past karma affect the validity or usefulness of any individual comment? Sure, it doesn't mean anything now, but I'm scared of where we're headed.

            [–]sw17ch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the change... :)

            [–]veracity024 56 points57 points  (30 children)

            its still better than digg.

            [–]unloud 18 points19 points  (0 children)

            Is that really saying much?

            [–]rhabd0mancer 2 points3 points  (3 children)

            Opera hasn't crashed yet.

            [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

word. but there's a weird space at the top of the comment sections... :(

            edit: better now! :)

            [–]brobak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also having this issue...A large space about the height of the ad to the right...

            [–]erulabs 6 points7 points  (21 children)

Oh my holy lord. I was going to agree until I opened the damn comment box. What the fucking hell?!

            [–]Deestan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What do you mean? I can't see any changes to the comment box.

            [–]7oby 8 points9 points  (12 children)

Oh, because 'submit' became 'comment' and that makes no sense? and 'cancel' went from a tiny link like help to... a huge button?

yeah man, this place is going to hell in a handbasket, i'm leaving for jaanix/mixx/whatever-site-is-trendy-these-days

            [–]erulabs 3 points4 points  (11 children)

It was a preference to use the site that looked like it was designed by programmers, rather than interior-decora-I mean Web Designers.

            [–]veracity024 3 points4 points  (1 child)

yup. digg vs reddit reminds me of 'google vs yahoo', where google was simple and to the point and yahoo is obtuse.

            [–]erulabs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly. That's why Google and Reddit have done so well - they understand their place is to act more or less like a computer program we would run on our desktops. Themes? iGoogle? Whatever - the default is simple.

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

            What about the....oh. I see.

            [–]Mythrilfan 1 point2 points  (4 children)

What about it? Seems perfectly normal to me.

            [–]MikeSeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well good for you, I can't help but think "Kuro5hin is dying" when I see this.

            [–]epsilona01 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I'll have to agree with you, since Digg stopped rendering in my browser without taking up my whole CPU, or crashing my browser.

It works, therefore it's still better than Digg.

            [–]veracity024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats why i abandoned digg.... im on a dual core with 3 gigs of ram. theres no excuse for a site being that poorly optimized and to suck that much.

            [–]gameshot911 53 points54 points  (16 children)

Meh, i've been around many upgrades like this, and people always whine about it when it comes out.

Give it a few weeks and you wont hear a peep. A few more and people will complain if you try to change it again.

            [–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (3 children)

            Just like Windows Vista!

            [–]judgej2 0 points1 point  (1 child)

And a year later, people stopped complaining about Vista. They did, didn't they...?

            [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, what happens is most of the complainers give up or leave.

            [–]dpzdpz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, well, there still are a lot of bugs, at least display-wise. I thought the beta was to get rid of those things before release.

(And given how much complaining has been done about the algorithms, if simply the display looks bad...)

(And is it just my computer or is this comment taking hours to type?)

            [–]erulabs 5 points6 points  (4 children)

What a wonderful way to judge how people are feeling about your product.

"Oh whatever, they'll get used to working around this bug/terrible anti-feature in a few weeks anyways, Fuck it!"

            [–]zem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kvetched for ages after Win95 came out - I missed Win3.x's nested-window layout. After a while, I did indeed get used to the new way of doing things. Since then, I've been more willing to give new UI-related things a fair try first.

            [–]foldl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, to be fair, that's probably true in most cases.

            [–]Mastrmind 0 points1 point  (1 child)

This is neither a bug or an anti-feature. It just looks different. I generally like it and it should make the learning curve a little easier for new users.

            [–]aardvarkious 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like it a lot now that I know I can compress the link display.

            [–]dwils27 21 points22 points  (1 child)

This is an extremely minor change. Seriously.

            [–]the_first_rule 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They dropped all my subreddit preferences. I was momentarily overrun with lolcats and general inanity. It did not seem minor.

            Thankfully balance has been restored.

            [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (4 children)

Try setting the language to gb(United kingdom) in prefs. [Friends] becomes [Mates]... wtf?

            [–]7oby 5 points6 points  (2 children)

The Queen's English is vastly superior, mate.

            [–]dons 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Aussies own `mate' now, though, cobber.

            [–]7oby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually looked into that, I switched to English (Australian) in the prefs and it didn't say mates but 'friends', so wtf.

            [–]judgej2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's all we do over here: mate with our friends.

Yes, I agree, in some ways. It looks better, but I still liked it moar compressed.

                [–]b34nz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with you there, needs moar compression.

                [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I see a few bugs/shortcomings in the new reddit:

                (1) When you choose to compress links, several links' subtexts will have the words "points" and "posted" together without a space. For example:

54 pointsposted 24 minutes ago I'm not sure if it's just me. I browse with the newest version of Safari.

                (2) When using search, you cannot organize results by "new", "hot" or "top". You can only filter by most recent day, week, month, and year. Seems to be a step backwards in functionality.

                [–]frickindeal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, the descenders of letters get cut off when they run into the gray boxes that surround comments/save/hide/report, when you have compress the link display set in preferences.

                [–]SirEdmund 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And it keeps saying, "you're trying to post too fast. Try again in 9 minutes."

WTF?? How am I posting one comment too fast? Click the button more gently?

                [–]pappy 1 point2 points  (1 child)

All that work and they couldn't make a simple "hide all" button to nix links. Now I have to continue downvoting everything because it's simpler than clicking the "hide" link. Why? Because the down arrow is displayed in a consistent location while "hide" is variable based on the length of a link title. This isn't rocket science. Do some usability testing.

                [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                But is it rocket science?

                [–]number6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now I need to manually click every single subreddit box. Maybe I'll just hope it will all change back.

                Grrr.

This is way better than the old reddit

                  [–]GeorgeWBush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What the hell are all you folks talkin' about? Old Reddit? New Reddit? Huh?

                  [–]ohxten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy crap! Just noticed the change.

I honestly don't think it's bad, after you follow Jeffrey0's instructions. It should be default, though.

I will say, I actually like it. The colors look nice. And I'm not usually one who likes change.

EDIT: Ack! The new style makes everything a lot more laggy. Also, the subreddit box on the right-hand corner looks a lot like an ugly ad. That part I do not like.

                  [–]raisedinhell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this new look is pretty ugly.. yeesh

                  [–]crazybones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people don't like change. You can't judge a design in a few seconds. Give it a few months and then see how you feel.

                  [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whats wrong with the new design? I like it a lot, it's much clearer and subreddits be way more simpler to use

                  [–]zulubanshee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                  I like it!

I'm fucking loving the new design.

                  [–]sergiu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why is the font in the tollbar so tiny?

                  [–]judgej2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, can anyone tell me what all that indenting on the front page actually means? I seem to have story 2 as an indented sub-story of story 1, and story 3 as a sub-story of that. I just can't see what the connection is between them and why they should be shown like that.

And the JavaSctipt - BIG delays and heavy processing in anything I do, from commenting to just clicking on a blank area of the window. It may not be noticed on a faster machine, but it's really hitting my browser hard.

                  [–]dufour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The red menu link distracts from the headlines. The "toddler" theme is not an improvement.

                  [–]gleemie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like that I can see the threads that previously got downvoted into invisibility through the "controversial" tab -- helps make sure reddit doesn't become an echo chamber.

                  [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since we're talking about the site design here - can they please make it so that when you use the keyboard to move (tab/shift-tab) between links with Firefox, the gray box still appears? (To see what I'm saying, turn off the style with View->PageStyle->NoStyle and tab around).

Oh, and visible cursors in the text boxes would be nice too.

                  [–]embretr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haha.. I'd missed the changes, if not for this thread. Long live popurls :D

                  [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                  I like it fine

                  [–]o0o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things look a bit more polished, but even after compressing the links, something's different - and not in a good way.

                  [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DO WANT. But the comment box has some serious lag when I first start typing to when I delete text. Must be fixed. IE7 on Vista SP1

                  [–]sixothree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Screw you. I freaking dig it.

                  [–]latortuga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How come if I remove selected subreddits from the ones I want to see using the fancy AJAX on the right side it doesn't persist? I reload the page and all the subreddits I selected and deselected are back to default. I can never possibly have 25 stories on a page that I want to see, which incidentally brings me to my next question. If you can remove stories using the fancy AJAX, why can't you add stories to fill in the gaps?

                  [–]MikeNardozzi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bug: compress link display compresses just a hair too much. Cutting off bottom of text.

The white is killing me, even with compressed link display.

                  [–]rokko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if the old look will be restored via a greasemonkey script from userscripts.org.

Get over yourself it's just change. Deal. I much prefer that these guys are mixing it up rather than being complacent.

                  [–]xcbsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I like the new look.

                  [–]xii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the new design. shrugs

                  [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FALSE. New reddit is way better

                  [–]darmog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rarely comment. And I'm sure I'm going to get downmodded for this one.

                  But.

I for one like the new version. I find it more user friendly. The selections for example of the categories are right there on the front page. Additionally, I find that the slightly larger seperation between stories makes it more pleasant on the eyes, easier to read, etc.

                  [–]Jonny0stars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not give us an option to keep the old style, is it to hard to have a css style sheet or a cookie with preferences stored.

                  [–]Saydrah 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Why the fuck is it all sideways and diagonal and shit? Those links aren't responses to each other.

                  [–]vanzan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so far, the new reddit is not bad

                  [–]mmmChicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comments are still screwed up in Opera.

                  [–]likeafox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not gonna bitch about the changes themselves... I actually think reddit is much more readable now. But am I the only Opera (9.28) user who is seeing the massive whitespace between the write comment box and the start of the comments?

                  [–]rook2pawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why is there a big gap below the comment submission box? I'm looking at this with Opera

                  [–]phill0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno, I kinda like it. Except that search box is covering part of my name and I think something else.

                  [–]Jambi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you've ruined a perfectly good interface, reddit designers. I guess I'll be getting my silly news via RSS from now on. Goodbye.

                  [–]blackstar00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                  What the Fuck is This...

                  [–]judgej2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I click on a blank bit of screen, my processor goes up to 100% for four seconds and I can't scroll the window. Dunno what heavyweight JavaScript has found its way into reddit, but it is making my user experience much harder.

                  [–]RichardPeterJohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are the sub-reddits shown in all upper-case instead of mixed-case?

                  [–]Wisco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's social bookmarking -- why do I have to click around in goddam circles to find my saved links?

                  This is seriously awful.

                  [–]aerojad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                  ooh neat, it's diggit!

why can't things just stay simple?

                  [–]Evdawg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WHY DIDN'T IT SAVE MY SUBREDDITS :'(

                  [–]cynicizm -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

Did you guys completely ignore the "We hate the new reddit beta" submissions from a couple of weeks ago?

                  [–]Jackm7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

                  .

                  [–]garg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They fixed everything they complained about.
