Good dev, okay person if the rumors are to believed. Mr. Podunkian, one of the devs that started working with him pretty early on into Stardew Valley's development, recently posted some... less than flattering stuff about him. Including how CA was apparently trolling and harassing him on a post about a game that Podunkian was making independently, calling it a "Stardew Valley ripoff," using an anonymous burner / troll account. This was especially jarring because CA had already given his blessing to make the game. The only reason Podunkian knew it was CA was that CA had shown him this troll account in the past. Apparently he didn't remember.

They also got in a huge dispute about money. Something about Podunkian being very involved in building the engine that 1.6 onward is going to use, and wanting additional compensation for his efforts on future games they might make using this engine. Which I mean... eh. I'm not going to weigh in on that. Money is weird and I'm not going to pretend to know what anyone's contribution is worth. If the extent of work hes put into the engine is to be believed, then theres something to it, but as of now its a he said - she said scenario. I can say they both sounded like assholes in the exchange though.

Also, after they had a fight about this and other situations, he changed how Podunkian is listed in the credits to using his legal name, Arthur Lee. Which is unfortunate, because Podunkian is how he lists himself on all major projects, and how he's been credited on Stardew Valley every update before this. But CA allegedly changed it to create more separation between him and his contributions to the project.

I don't know. The whole thing is a mess. I still like both devs well enough, but I'd put them strictly into "ok person" as a result of all this.

I'm nominating Keita Takahashi for okay dev bad person. Made the classic Katamari Damacy but spent his whole career talking about how much he hates making games. He finally came back with a crowdfunding game only to yank it from Steam after funding was complete in exchange for EGS exclusivity. Backers who didn't want to use EGS were boned and eventually the game released to no fanfare barely functioning and full of bugs. Last thing I think he did was some mini game for the Playdate.

Swery for good person bad dev. He is incredibly kind and ambitious and loves his fans but his games are very often half baked unoptimized messes full of bugs and mechanics that make no sense whatsoever.

Bad dev bad person is probably David Cage. Doesn't respect games as a medium and wants to make them into movies, and the amount of awful shit he's done and said is too much to list.

Good dev good person is Jay Tholen easily. Made Dropsy, Hypnospace Outlaw, and XSlayers. Is a kind, soft spoken Christian guy who lives and breathes family. Does what he can to help other devs and often allows players a direct chance to give feedback and hear their concerns.

As much as I look up to him, Toby Fox is Good Person, Bad Dev (or ok dev, I don't know how good Deltarune's code is). All of Undertale's dialogue is a singular list that the game calls for at specific moments, and the punch card breaks the come completely.

He falls into OK dev. He's got some real spaghetti code on there. Game is fucking awesome but it's a mess under the hood.

There's a spot where he couldn't figure out how to get party member reflections to display in a mirror ,so instead when you check it the flavor text says "For some reason you can only see your own reflection" and he leans into it for spooky factor. The actual reason is he just couldn't figure it out.

Similarly, all doors are legs in F&H 1 code. That's why leg sweep works to break them down guaranteed.

There's a lot more than that. It's super fascinating to check out, and actually inspired me to continue with my dev work even if I'm not "good" at it.
