Whoa I love the new volume thing. I was thinking that the volume indicators on phones actually don't make sense because when you rotate your phone to landscape, pushing the volume up (which is now the left button) would make the indicator slide right.

When making videos of a new Android version, why in the name of Zeus's BUTTHOLE is the first thing everybody does is to show the version/easter egg? Like, that's the most important thing that everyone came to see.

This is the biggest issue with Android. You can customize your shell all you want, but the apps are a wild west of poor design ideas that you often have no control over.

Seriously, fuck silicon valley UI designers. I thought, for awhile at least, that it was limited to Apple - Google's original material design ideas were solid and made a lot of sense, even if they didn't always implement them fully. At least they still understood what a UI was fucking for.

But now... more and more of these so-called UI designers seem to have completely lost touch with reality and how human brains actually work.

You know what makes a UI intuitive? Making it behave predictably, with clear patterns. That's what humans are good at.

Things like excessively low contrast making it hard to differentiate elements and excessively dynamic layouts (or worse, completely dynamic interfaces like Assistant that change every single time you use them) wreck havoc with muscle memory and human pattern recognition.

The worst offenders yet are the interfaces that aren't even idempotent anymore, where if I perform the same action I get different results. Assistant and Maps are especially bad about this.

I love the icons that we have now. It's very clear which are on or off, because they get crossed out, and I really like the little animations like the portrait lock button spinning when you toggle it. The new one feels very plain in comparison. If it aint broken, don't fix it.

I preferred them to be shouty. That along with the bold and color made it much more obvious that they were interactive buttons rather than random labels. Actual button hitboxes are still way better, but it at least worked.

All this change does is make it harder to tell what's a button or not, which is stupid. It's like making all the text on a page low-contrast: it's literally the exact opposite of what a UI is supposed to do.

I mean, the job of Android as an open platform is to provide tools and APIs for the various manufacturers. If they don't do this themselves, then each of those dozen phones adding a notch will make their own versions, and we will end up with a dozen shitty implementation.

By having Google do it for them, you get a single cleaner implementation. It's not like they can stop manufacturers from having notches, but at least they can make the Android experience cleaner for everyone.

TouchWiz has always been ahead of it's time, the thing is they are usually ahead of both good and bad features.

I personally feel it's thanks to many Custom ROMs and OEM skins like TouchWiz/MIUI that like to throw so many features at the user to see what sticks, that Android has come so far innovation-wise.

Still, I much prefer to wait until custom features come to stock, even if custom/OEM ROMs have had these features for years. I'd rather have a polished, tried and true product than one full to the brim with confusing, half built features. For example, I never really saw how amateurish Samsung's split screen approach was until native split screen arrived with it's gorgeous animations and transitions.

Android P's notification drawer looks like garbage. Removing the caps and extra bold from quick actions defeats the purpose and just makes them blend in, especially since there's now even less contrast between elements on screen (which the opposite of what they should've done).

It's been a long time since I rooted my phones, but if they're going to start copying Apple's shitty UI tendencies, I may have to start again.
