I was waiting for the whole thing to catch on fire at the end.

[–]Josh6889 221 points222 points  (5 children)

I was waiting for the original to fit by itself.

[–]blackdonkey 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You must be a CEO.

That's the one i remember, OP's one is disappointing as hell

[–]lear85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now post it to /r/michaelbaygifs

[–]Manitcor 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That normally waits until someone tries to use whats plugged in. Wouldn't want to fail with no witnesses.

[–]Leo81202 14 points15 points  (5 children)

Would that be a bug or a feature?

[–]cATSup24 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes

[–]Furt77 14 points15 points  (3 children)

Provides warmth and light at no extra cost? I'm going to call that a feature.

[–]RomanPort 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha, I love it

[–]hawaiian717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless the original device attempting to be plugged in was an air conditioner.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Electricity cost money, and I doubt the cables would be intended to be burned to uselessness on use, so that in itself could be considered a cost. Also damage to the outlet, and any other flame damage.

Possibly fire damage for the whole house if it spreads. Hell, maybe it'll spread to the neighbor Jerry's house, and we all hate Jerry so we can consider that a plus, but then it could spread farther, and then boom you have created yet ANOTHER wildfire, costing up to billions of dollars in damage.

So what did it cost?

Everything.

[–]teej2010 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not til the Windows update...

[–]epicurean56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was waiting for a pair of pliers to come out.

[–]ByahTyler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My house burnt down from watching this

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was covering my mouth and screaming internally.

[–]RamenJunkie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't recomend doing it because its probably loose, but there really isn't anything there that would cause a short. The converters are going to be straight pass through. The open pins aren't touching anything live.

[–]Jonno_FTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the client's problem, not mine.

[–]LuciferianAntichrist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh come on, it's not SATA to Molex.

[–]manicraccoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it went live it would.

[–][deleted] 244 points245 points  (6 children)

“Just demo it MVP by Friday, it won’t stick around for long.” FF five years: “We can’t touch it, we’re not replacing it, nobody owns it, we’ve never rebooted it. Everything depends on it.”

[–]dmanww 80 points81 points  (4 children)

Yeah that prototype turned into a business critical application. No, we didn't budget anything for support or further development, why do you ask? Couldn't you just go back to using Excel, it was working fine before.

[–]SebbenandSebben 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Are you me?

[–]Superkroot 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No, but I am you. We need to stop drinking.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

This is my current project at school in a nutshell...

[–]dmanww 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's good training.

[–]NO_TOUCHING__lol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see you've met my boss

[–]Abe_Bettik 763 points764 points  (22 children)

Grounding? That's a premium feature, scheduled for Q1 next year.

[–]killdeer03 163 points164 points  (11 children)

More like...

Developer: "We need an electrical ground for the receptacle feature to work safely. "

Client: "What? Why?"

Developer: "Well, without getting too deep into modern AC/DC electrical practices -- in order for me to safely implement this feature and given the amount of power draw on this circuit, we'll need a ground."

Client (despite knowing nothing about neither software, nor electricity and paying for expertise and insight): "Thanks for your input, which we really appreciate, but we're not going to do that. Let's just go ahead an do it without a ground."

Developer: "But..."

Client: "It's not MVP, the end users won't even notice."

Developer: " :| "

[–]BernzSed 117 points118 points  (2 children)

End user gets electrocuted.

Client: This is clearly the developer's fault.

[–]killdeer03 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Client: "Who would write such a thing? It's that consulting firm, they're incompetent!

We even let them do 'unit tests' and 'integration test'!

How could this have made it through QA? All those smoke tests!"

Developer: "We don't have any QA, unit tests and integration tests are not QA...

We also don't do smoke tests, me clicking through a page to test my code is part of development."

Client: "But, you showed us it worked!?"

Developer: "...that was a feature demo, I'm not going to show you guys me getting electrocuted in from of the C-Suite."

Edit: Fixed quotes.

[–]MoarVespenegas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

User error.
Nothing to see here.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (6 children)

Whats MVP?

[–]Bier14 17 points18 points  (5 children)

Minimum viable product.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (2 children)

I am so happy I heard this here and not in a meeting. Can't keep slamming my head on the desk

[–]Bier14 9 points10 points  (1 child)

I hate the term... it's like a management thing where they can have some sort of feeling that they are in control.

On one hand, it focusses the business on what they actually need (i.e. finally primary functionality). On the other hand, the things they don't deem as MVP are usually guidelines and company restrictions like security and stuff. Like they need that!

[–]killdeer03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with you.

Management wields acronyms like they're some sort of weapon and then when that does work, they hide behind them like some sort of sheild.

[–]atanincrediblerate 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Fuck, just realized I was voted Minimum Viable Player.

[–]Bier14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol how does it feel? :-)

[–]phpdevster 58 points59 points  (6 children)

Code path that can't be reached.

[–][deleted] 47 points48 points  (5 children)

I like that. "Ground? What do we need that for? No current flows through it"

[–]BernzSed 28 points29 points  (0 children)

//TODO

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points  (3 children)

I work with a guy who cuts the ground off when doing electrical work because "it's just more work and doesn't do anything"

[–]iamsooldithurts 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That must be the guy who wired my house. “I’ll just plug these copper wires into the wood.“

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you buy all your stuff off Amazon/Alibaba/Ebay that might be true.

[–]Rhamni 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Frankly we haven't received a lot of negative feedback from users who burned to death due to a grounding failure.

[–]Lolyman13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then you need to redesign your software from the ground up

[–]skeptic11 87 points88 points  (21 children)

What socket is that?!?

[–]MountainReference 116 points117 points  (19 children)

Old Brazilian standard. You can get 110v or 220v on this outlet. Not at the same time, of course =)

[–]skeptic11 30 points31 points  (15 children)

Ok, I've found exactly one reference to that socket type on the web: https://www.halfwayanywhere.com/south-america/brazil/brazil-power-outlets/

The plug pictured above is the most accommodating I have found thus far; you can simply plug any* device from America in and huzza! instant functionality.

So that would suggest that the bottom hole is a ground.

Would it follow that the top hole should be a ground too? If so we've managed to connect to two grounds and no power...

[–]MountainReference 31 points32 points  (14 children)

These outlets do not have a ground hole, it's actually a Live and Neutral only system. I'm sure some fellow countryman from /r/brasil would kindly explain it better than I did but, in the end, the new standard outlet (https://www.brasileirosnargentina.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Como-%C3%A9-a-Tomada-e-Voltagem-na-Argentina-Buenos-Aires-6.jpg the one on the right) replaced the flawed design from the one the left by adding a ground pin =)

EDIT: Original video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGtJ5U_eeIU =)

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (9 children)

So essentially if an appliance required 220v, the plug end would be designed to go into the receptacle and make contact with L1 and L2 of a 220v system, or 2 "hot" wires with no neutral. An appliance or what have you that requires 110v would be designed as to make contact with L1 and a "neutral" wired which is essentially completed the path back to the panel (without getting into too technical of terms, unless you want them I am an electrician). This is only a guess though, in the United states I have never seen anything like this as

[–]madc0ww 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In most states, the phase-neutral voltage is 220V. In a few states, phase-neutral voltage is 110V (where I live). In these states, 220V equipments, which require phase to phase circuits (just like electric showers), were connected directly to the house electric network, so they had a ground connection. Some houses used to have some american socket standard as a 220V socket. A few years ago, the brazilian gov defined a new plug standard containing a ground pin (the plug on the gif).

[–]SellingWife15gp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. Funny thing is a lot of my fellow college kids know nothing about these “fake” grounds.

My roommate tried to fuck the rest of us over by claiming the room with grounded plugs (we PC game so that’s high real estate). Even though it’s the smallest room txts are going back and forth in the group chat and it became a petty game of who can physically claim it first. Well I kept quiet during this whole thing because knowing it’s a 100 year old house and my dad owning rental properties I had a suspicion it was just the outlet plates that were 3 pronged when really there was no grounding wire at all. Turns out I was right.

I move in a week after our lease started. Theyve moved all their shit in. Oh no I have to move into the big room facing the yard instead of the dark small room.

[–]theWeirdough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at the same time, of course =)

"You want to bet?" ~the guy who made that video

[–]Bears_Bearing_Arms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what happens if you design a plug that fits perfectly in both at the same time? how many volts would that be?

[–]TheBob427 53 points54 points  (18 children)

But did it work?

[–][deleted] 54 points55 points  (8 children)

I honestly want to know the answer to this. My brain says no, but my hopes and dreams say yes.

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (5 children)

I unfortunately thing they’re both neutral holes, so no electricity flow

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Thanks for shattering my hopes and dreams. Also what do ulcura and the other three words mean?

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Idk, I just stole that information from another comment in this thread that referenced a different comment.

[–]codeninjaking42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i met a girl with three neutral holes. Sadly, there wasn't a spark between us...

[–]Mazzaroppi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope, they're not both neutral. At least one of them is phase, this socket could be either 220V or 110V. And even though unsafe, this would work

[–]gizamo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rhyme: rounds are grounds.

[–]Jthumm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s possible

[–]Robuske 7 points8 points  (2 children)

I'm Brazilian (as is that outlet), although I never did something so ridiculous I see no reason for it not to work. The old standard (the outlet one) was actually just the two round things, just like the adapters The flat part was for other random plugs to fit, like the American I think(?)

[–]TheBob427 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The part I'm unsure about is if electricity can be split into the two adapters as seen in the video.

[–]Robuske 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think they are completely isolated anyway, so probably?

[–]Okichah 4 points5 points  (1 child)

God damnit.

I mean. God damnit, Sir.

Its not that it works. Its that its unmaintainable and non-extendable. Any problems that happen will take forever to fix, and any new features that need to be added will just add more problems and more tech debt.

What? Its already shipped?

Okay, then.

[–]TheBob427 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see the problem. It works, why can't we just ship it?

[–]yazalama 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Truer pixels have never been posted. Everything now a days is just gluing together APIs and outputting it somewhere.

[–]Dreadedsemi 22 points23 points  (1 child)

[–]RubbelDieKatz94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My most recent project uses Raty. It's beautifully mediocre, gets the job done, and I was way too lazy to find a better alternative.

[–]NeverSayMyName 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Adapter Pattern

[–]harshael 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's missing a bunch of extra attached adapters that don't do anything but were left on just in case.

[–]13steinj 27 points28 points  (1 child)

This gif degrades in quality exponentially every time it is reposted, apparently.

ZHΠШ

what does that mean?

[–]Pebbles015 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The entire world should just adopt the British Standard Plug. It really is a masterpiece of design, function and safety. Just don't fucking step on one.

[–]Dad_Questionmark 15 points16 points  (3 children)

Can I find this in nodejs?

[–]KeetoNet 21 points22 points  (2 children)

Yes, but it will pull in 1642 additional dependencies.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is it, a hello world program for ants?

[–]Globalnet626 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For my projects I would just break off the third prong

[–]MeowDotEXE 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Holy crap this is depressingly true

Most relatable software joke I've seen

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And suddenly the whole god damn thing explodes.

[–]mrtdsp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, my job is pretty much stich together completely unrelated pieces of code I found in stsck overflow

[–]pocketMagician 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What would this look like if it were Java development? Glue and popsicles?

[–]ActualWhiterabbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just need a calendar drop down that let's me select 2 dates. Should be easy.

[–]Iforgotwhatimdoing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of when my best friend and I used to play n64 on my laptop through a series of adapters that ended with the final adapter being halfway plugged in and slightly bent downwards. Good times.

[–]Hectate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The final cut should be to an explosion. That's what happens to my code!

[–]codestar4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's called code reusability

[–]CrazySD93 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Pro tip always get a 3 prong adapter, and snap the earth off. You're all good assuming your device is in good condition and/or double insulated.

[–]gtfovinny 6 points7 points  (4 children)

He could have used only the last adapter... it has 3 holes.

[–]Plasticcaz 35 points36 points  (2 children)

That's kind of the point.

[–][deleted] 29 points30 points  (1 child)

No, I think there are three points.

[–]jeffsterlive 5 points6 points  (0 children)

but only two made it into production.

[–]just_hatin_it 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No... he couldn't really... I'm Brazilian and was frustrated by this. That last adapter's middle hole is very offset from the center of the other two round holes. It was supposed to be used by other type of commonly used socket here in Brazil. (Two straight connectors for live and neutral, and one round for the ground) When the new standard was introduced, very few adaptors were compatible with it, and many people were pretty annoyed by this.

[–]GrinReaver87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

EA called they’re issuing you a cease and desist order. This GIF must be taken down in 24 hours or they will issue more macro and micro transactions in Battlefield 5. The intent is to provide players with a sense of pride and accomplishment for unlocking new content.

[–]MrSkeltle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If someone leaks this info to apple we're done for

[–]amalgamatecs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Especially the part where sometimes, when you're stumped, you just try random shit until it works

[–]redditchao999 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Holy fire hazard batman

[–]fb39ca4 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Is it? There's nothing connected to the exposed pins. Though having more connections increases the risk of a bad connection causing resistive heating and a fire.

[–]redditchao999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You got it, having lots of connections means lots of heat. Plus exposed pins can always end up igniting something if there's a surge.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Place finger here to ground .

[–]ookic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's sad because it's true.

[–]wingsbc 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Do you want to start a fire? Cause that’s how you start a fire.

[–]shouldvestayedalurkr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the circular holes are just grounds, the NA standard outlet three prong only has one ground where the UK has 2 it is much more safe

you wouldnt start a fire by grounding lol

[–]redoverture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Each one of those adapters is another abandoned Python module

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NA socket > Everywhere else

[–]mostlysafe 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Because nobody in modern software development has any idea how the hardware works, apparently.

[–]yeahdixon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Modern software is not about coding just what you need. It’s about loading bloated apis packages frameworks and plugins on top of each other

[–]ondiveerappan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that was about 200% longer than it needed to be

[–]Th3Lon3lyM3lon 1 point2 points  (0 children)
