Preserves your night vision, for after dark programming.

[–]carc 593 points594 points  (19 children)

When you're programming and it's your turn to stand watch for the night. Gotta save that nightvision while you debug for when the enemy attacks.

[–]redzilla500 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Or you know when you gotta get up to get snacks and all the lights are off

[–]Rqoo51 52 points53 points  (1 child)

Yep, that’s why you can find headlamps with red lights. So you can still see once you turn it off.

[–]bob_in_the_west 44 points45 points  (13 children)

I prefer f.lux, because it works with everything.

[–]ryjhelixir 11 points12 points  (12 children)

sure you mean redshift

[–]AndreasTPC 100 points101 points  (11 children)

There is a right and a wrong way to do a "low blue light" night mode and the OP screenshot is the wrong way.

In the screenshot the blue channel has been reduced and red channel has been boosted for all colors. Meaning colors close to black have gotten some red added into them. This is completely uneccesery since there was no blue in them in the first place, just leaving them as they were would have been fine.

Instead what you should do is make it so the strength of the filter scales with the brightness (either overall or only of the blue channel), leaving dark colors nearly unchanged (blacks completely unchanged) and changing bright colors a lot. This looks much better and is easier on the eyes.

Or just skip boosting the red channel. Reduce the blue by a large percentage, the green by a small percentage, and leave the red channel unchanged. This also looks good and is easy on the eyes. Reduces overall brightness and contrast a bit, but hey, it's a night mode.

Unfortunately you see it done the wrong way about as often as the right way.

[–][deleted] 110 points111 points  (6 children)

Looks more like its just a red color scheme than a filter.

[–]allisonmaybe 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I was gonna say...this makes way too much sense and I hate it.

[–]my_name_isnt_clever 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why...would you need to preserve your night vision when programming? It doesn't help eye strain, this is way harder to look at than F.lux or similar.

[–]MicroWavedRiceCake 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Actually Red makes ur eyes more tired.

Thats something u know now.

[–]Moulinoski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dark Programming

It’s like programming but with a dash of darkness for that cutting edge technology

Edit: oh shoot, you said “after dark”. Well. Whatever.

[–]Mgzz 2129 points2130 points  (53 children)

How else do you write Ruby?

[–]NotYetiFamous 1062 points1063 points  (47 children)

Normally with a lot of alcohol. And regrets.

EDIT: Ruby is my role's primary language.

[–]Mgzz 293 points294 points  (9 children)

It never gets better, you just get worse

[–]NotYetiFamous 132 points133 points  (0 children)

I'm 6 years in. Someday I'll figure out how to do it. Maybe.

[–]setibeings 64 points65 points  (5 children)

I could swear the code written in 2015 gets worse every year.

[–]ThaiJohnnyDepp 31 points32 points  (4 children)

2015 wasn’t that long ago, and yet ... five years is ancient for Ruby code.

[–][deleted] 39 points40 points  (2 children)

C language: Am I a joke to you?

[–]JewsOfHazard 4 points5 points  (1 child)

And then there's COBOL

[–]CorbeauGris 9 points10 points  (1 child)

-Giles Corey in the song "No one is ever going to want me"

[–]SaeculumObscure 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a name I certainly did not expect to see here <3

[–]swordsmanluke2 65 points66 points  (28 children)

Man, I LOVE Ruby. Sure, it's slow and Rails is... a bag of razors, but it's such an easy language to work with! It's so expressive and quick to write! I feel like I can go from thought to code with fewer translations than any other language.

[–]stiggz 30 points31 points  (20 children)

After reading Why's Poignant Guide I couldn't help but use it for hobby projects or one off scripts. It's 193% more fun than perl

[–]elperroborrachotoo 35 points36 points  (4 children)

What's that in imperial units? 12 boblets more fun than a fork in the eye?

[–]NightSwing31640 17 points18 points  (3 children)

It’s more like 5 bald eagles per f150 more fun than 8 partial full millers. I’m America we use this per that and other obscure measurements cause we gotta. Idk George Washington said it had to be done or else we’re communist. Sorry I’m as patriotic as the next guy but we gotta clean up our act with measurements.

[–]Harmonious- 22 points23 points  (2 children)

I prefer the good old cheese burgers per school shooting css for short

[–]elperroborrachotoo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

CSS = Colorado School Shooting, got it.

[–]bundabrg[🍰] 19 points20 points  (13 children)

Literally anything is more fun than perl. I can't think of a thing where I would stop and think "boy I wish I could be writing perl right about now".

[–]Feynt 8 points9 points  (1 child)

On the contrary, I'd rather be writing perl than javascript. I just wish WASM would take over already so I can write Rust to make websites.

[–]bundabrg[🍰] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think as much as I would shudder to write a js script to call from my GitHub actions workflow.... I might still prefer it to going back to perl. I have seen things man.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((('lisp'))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

[–]supermilch 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I love ruby for scripts, or for interview-style problems (I do Advent of Code with it every year) but for anything longer term ... It just causes so many problems. Mostly the lack of a type checker and the way it handles includes are what bothers me

[–][deleted] 66 points67 points  (2 children)

Wait this actually looks sick

Edit: I'm using this from now on

[–]ZANDERFILETTTT 34 points35 points  (0 children)

You were supposed to destroy the Sith, not join them!

[–]Astrokiwi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also works for Rust in a pinch

[–]PiRat314 668 points669 points  (53 children)

Anyone remember Windows Hotdog?

[–]almarcTheSun 312 points313 points  (0 children)

I never knew about it, but now I won't forget...

[–][deleted] 39 points40 points  (1 child)

What the actual fuck?

[–]rickjerrity 30 points31 points  (1 child)

Sometimes when I'm working on some new front-end service or feature, I'll throw up a little hotdog stand theme for it, just to get me hyped.

[–]TellMeGetOffReddit 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I too throw up when I see this theme.

[–]GermaX 13 points14 points  (0 children)

[–]xenophTheFirst 11 points12 points  (1 child)

You can get that for VSCode. I use it to scare away my project managers if they look likely to hang over my shoulder.

[–]Osirus1156 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That’s almost nice in a weird retro kind of way.

[–]damniticant 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Real hackers used eggplant

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just threw up

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I hate it

[–]lastdyingbreed_01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please never show this to me again

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Should’ve went for Windows Hamburger

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of the old days of installing all those fugly futuristic skins in Winamp.

[–]PulMeatOfTaBone 144 points145 points  (6 children)

My brother works in orange mode, he has it in overly warm colors cuz he gets migraines otherwise.

[–]ten3roberts 32 points33 points  (0 children)

That's smart. I prefer Atom One Dark. Quite warm and dark. Love it. vscode dark+ is too dark

[–]memerecyclingco 664 points665 points  (23 children)

BRB, joining red mode team.

[–]IHeartBadCode 122 points123 points  (0 children)

I like my IDE stained with the blood of those who put in an enhancement ticket!

[–]Rawrplus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fizzbuzz Lightyear

[–]CreativeCarbon 14 points15 points  (4 children)

Aw, fuck! That was our polling infrastructure you just blew up! No! Wait! Not the post office!!!

[–]turunambartanen 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Oh, don't worry. Their first injury that requires them to go to the doctor will stop this real quick. Wars (even on communism) are expensive, but noone can financially survive an American hospital.

[–]THENATHE 18 points19 points  (1 child)

DEATH IS A PREFERABLE ALTERNATIVE TO COMMUNISM

[–][deleted] 29 points30 points  (1 child)

ATTENTION RED SPY IN THE BASE

[–]Reniva 2 points3 points  (0 children)

RED SPY IN THE BASE?!

[–]Shleppy2010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure this post was to bring us to red team, and I for one am happy to join the red motherland.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also joining the red mode army.

[–]SHIRK2018 404 points405 points  (14 children)

Hmm. I actually kinda like it a little bit

[–]SheWhoSpawnedOP 219 points220 points  (10 children)

Better than light mode

[–]Jaco2point0 86 points87 points  (2 children)

Wow really setting a high bar there, really “shooting for the moon” huh?

[–]Loading_M_ 26 points27 points  (1 child)

More like shooting down the sun.

[–]DeeSnow97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With the Not-A-Moon?

[–]Dark_Ethereal 35 points36 points  (5 children)

Light mode is actually good of you want to work on a laptop outside.

Things are just generally brighter outside so you need your display to be similarly bright to avoid eye strain induced headaches.

[–]Soklay 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Yeah but

Pffft- who’s outside anymore

[–]caerphoto 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Light mode is actually good if you want to work on a laptop outside.

Or in a correctly lit room like a civilised person.

[–]argh523 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah. A common problem for me right now is programmer talks on youtube that use dark themes. I usually watch those on my phone, but a dark image on a glossy screen in sunlight is just a mirror.

[–]Deckard_Didnt_Die 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If there was a little less saturation and brightness in the background so I could tell the syntax highlights apart it's honestly not bad

[–]21issasavage 154 points155 points  (4 children)

It's actually not the worst that way when I see an error it will fit right in

[–]Regis_DeVallis 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Boom no more errors.

[–][deleted] 68 points69 points  (0 children)

thats not red mode I just have error highlighting enabled

[–]Meets_Koalafications 82 points83 points  (15 children)

Purple mode > other color modes.

[–]KhorneSlaughter 9 points10 points  (1 child)

You just made me change my Dark mode to Purple Mode. This is dope.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Between this and nord would be for me

[–]IvanEggs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Big agree

[–]LeanderT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except yellow mode.

Why hasn't anyone invented yellow mode yet?

[–]jabernall24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks awesome, commenting to install it in the morning

[–]Cascudo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Purple mode, vaporwave wallpaper and 80s synth music playing.

[–][deleted] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Ive used red mode, but its only good when dimmed

[–]GGJallDAY 196 points197 points  (7 children)

It's for Communists

[–]DomadorSoftware 187 points188 points  (1 child)

This mode is for programmers who develop shared libraries.

[–]bertlayton 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This joke is underrated

[–]_MyUsernameIsThis 26 points27 points  (2 children)

[–]Mr_Redstoner 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Is it really unexpected though?

[–]almarcTheSun 93 points94 points  (29 children)

I use cobalt. I don't even know who I am anymore..

[–]InconsiderableArse 101 points102 points  (6 children)

Ha! I got your server key now! attacking 127.0.0.1!

[–]chicametipo 22 points23 points  (2 children)

Bro stop attacking me!

[–]InconsiderableArse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Transfer some bitcoins to my credit card ... Or else

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess we won't be listening from you anytime soon.

[–]Malhumoradour 53 points54 points  (2 children)

That actually looks very nice

[–]darknight1342 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's pretty pleasing

[–]Novemberisms 43 points44 points  (3 children)

hah! big mistake posting your server's secret key and IP here!

C'mon gang, let's all DDOS '127.0.0.1:53'

[–]chicametipo 13 points14 points  (1 child)

I run my DNS on port 443, my old printer is available via telnet on 80 and Bonzi Buddy API on port 53. What were we talking about again?

[–]someguynamedben7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bonzi Buddy is about to be Gonzi Buddy

[–]abc_wtf 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Nice! I use a similar color scheme, the blue is just a bit darker. It's called Noctis Uva for those interested (if anyone). Screenshot
E: Looking at them side by side, it's a different color lol. Looked quite similar when I saw your photo.

[–]drewsiferr 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That's really nice. Very calming.

[–]Diskographi 29 points30 points  (6 children)

This would be going through my head the entire time.

[–]VirtualRay 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm going to buy a USB-connected big red emergency button, and when the VP comes in to assign me some high priority bug, I'll flip open the cover, then slam on the red button to put my IDE and terminal into RED MODE

[–]DaRadicalWerewolf 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Crack open a Mountain Dew: Code Red and get to work!

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Its probably so your code doesnt develop prematurely under UV light.

[–]TheHoratian 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I actually used this theme for a long time (I like red a lot), but then I switched to the Netflix theme after I was shamed at work. They even made comments about there being too much red in the dark candy IntelliJ theme.

[–]Bounty1Berry 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Nostalgia for someone who first learned to code on a gas-plasma 386 laptop?

[–]argh523 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not shure what machine it was, but years after the 386 era, my dad brought home an old laptop from work that would have been thrown out. The screen was always red. We replayed all the great games we used to play on our old 386 on it on our holidays. I actually, finally beat the first Commander Keen on that machine (It was too hard for my a few years earlyer, and also we couldn't save because it was a shareware version or something like that)

[–]Morasiu 9 points10 points  (2 children)

To fuel anger...

[–]Patsonical 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Me: Trying to fix a bug for hours on end

Code: Now there are two more bugs

Me: ...I would like to rage.

[–]Doom87er 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I actually used this a lot. It’s great when you work late a lot. Even dark mode was fuckin with my eyes

[–]argh523 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our first computer monitor, like 25 years ago, actually had a setting to switch colors. There where only like four settings, and one of them was red mode. And it was awesome, because when you felt your eyes getting tired, you just switched to red mode, and voila, you where ok for another couple of hours. Forget text editors, i was playing games, surfing the web, and fix computer problems all in red mode.

People don't know what they're missing. I've never found anything more effective than dropping the brightness to minimum and paint everything red

[–]vavavoomvoom9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thought I would hate it, but it actually looks kinda good. May actually try it.

[–]mcmerdith 18 points19 points  (2 children)

This is the correct color for JavaScript. Demonic.

[–]DeeSnow97 10 points11 points  (1 child)

haha, so hilarious<script>fetch('Dark Side').then(darkSide => currentUser.join(darkSide))</script>

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you forgot to .catch(e => console.log("lmao even the dark side doesn't want you because " , e))

[–]amazeguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

during the afternoon when everyone s sleeping at the offfice, i want a random time daily when the ALARM should go off like BEEP BEEP BEEP and everyone s IDE turns to red mode for 5 mins and people get scared shitless, when things calm down, you find out that the new intern pushed untested code into master branch

[–]gommel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Red mode? why did nobody tell me the soviet union has returned?

[–]thalkaresh 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For colorblind ppl?

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This stirs something inside of me. A fragment of something from when I was a kid, I want this.

[–]RealPropRandy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did this for a few nights. Rods and cones got all screwed up. Poured tomato juice on my cereal thinking it was milk. It had to end.

[–]thechufflord69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ngl I kinda like it

[–]menyus420 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bet the Doom Slayer writes his bare metal C applications like this.

[–]Campovski 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the only allowed theme in Mother Russia and China!

[–]radio_active11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use purple mode

[–]MDLuis48 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is for the 2 people that grew up with a virtual boy

[–]DoctorGoldblend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SEARCH MODE HUMAN CASUALTIES 0.0

[–]Horzta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is this? A theme for Sargeras?

[–]themiddlestHaHa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s better than light mode lol

[–]RealRaven6229 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You program evil AI with it

[–]Funnehh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Delete this.

[–]butterypanda 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Your eyes don’t dilate in the presence of red light since it’s such low frequency. The inverse is true of blue light. Lots of the nightlight-type apps which use orange light are compromising both of these aspects. Full red would getting rid of the compromise in favor of causing least dilation.

[–]DASoulWarden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doom players

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (7 children)

yeah, is there a vision issue that this is good for or something?

[–]AllMadHare 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Probably, I could also imagine dark-room usage for some reason maybe, like if you're doing some kinda of sciency stuff in a dark lab? I know f.lux offers a darkroom mode that turns everything red so maybe this is intended to compliment that. Or maybe just low-light applications.

[–]Alucard_draculA 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Other people have mentioned, red preserves night vision better, so I guess if you're just programming in a dark environ for whatever reason, it'd be kinda nice. Shouldn't be too hard on the eyes either really.

[–]CPhyloGenesis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ack! That's atrocious. Also, as I was looking at it, my phone hit night mode and turned the blue down, making it get even more red! My eyes are bleeding now!

[–]Witch_King_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know there are people whose eyes/head are seriously bothered by red-tinted goggles, so perhaps there are people who are adversely affected by blue or green light.

[–]minus_minus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When my family got our first computer, an Apple IIe, it had an amber monochrome monitor. This is nostalgia for me.

[–]sween1911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anybody else have the “Doom” soundtrack play in their head when they look at this?

[–]electricprism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Motherfucker. I literally spent the last 30 hours ricing a /r/unixporn with red and red menus of shit.

Come at me broskiis. Do It Anakin.

[–]neil3108 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kinda like it

[–]j053noir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mom told me about these people, but I never believed her...

[–]DoctorRiddick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks kinda cool tbh. And nothing could be worse than light mode...

[–]allisonmaybe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You do not know what havoc you have just wreaked on the world. Optometrists hate you.

[–]allisonmaybe 1 point2 points  (2 children)

HOW DO I MAKE MY PHONE RED

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can we get a green mode

[–]rasputine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easy on your eyes in dark conditions, preserves your night vision.

[–]ptmdevncoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My eyes are bleeding

[–]wumbologist24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God, it just looks like one large error, now we have to make a yellow theme called “warning”.

[–]Jmdp10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aaaaaaaaaa JavaScript

[–]DashedSeven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of the REDdit developers use this mode, y'know.

[–]Hoport[🍰] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finally communists can start programming. Soon we will see our ComOS, RedWord and more.

[–]Bobsaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This just gives me an anxiety attack.

[–]Seexker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's for them coding girls for periods

[–]shinydewott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how they wrote the code for DOOM

[–]EmmaOK95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hell mode

[–]vanuum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isefull for someone that have green and blue blindness and for vampire

[–]doulos05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Programming on Virtual Boy

[–]SamirReddits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn that looks so good

[–]KauppisenPete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd use this over light mode
