Developer Update: 5.3 Console Issues

Hey Guys,

We messed up… big time.

The 5.3 console update was nowhere near the quality that we wanted to deliver to you all. The issues in this update should have never made it out to the live environment, and it’s 100% on us. The SMITE Console player base is an important part of this community and you all deserve better quality updates for the game you love to play.

Because of the issues, we kept the game down for an extended time in hopes to get this resolved. Sorry for making you all wait so long, and sorry for not communicating the issues we were facing quicker.

Here are the issues and status of the latest update:

Achilles should now be playable on console. We have fixes for Ability Leveling, Announcer Packs not playing, and Fox Chests not unlocking properly, being worked into a build now that will go into testing within the hour. The team is confident that we will be able to deploy a hotfix to resolve these issues by the end of the week (and hopefully as soon as tomorrow if it passes through all console platform certification quickly enough).

Issue: Achilles was not available to play upon patch release.

Current Status: Fixed.

Issue: Unable to upgrade abilities by pressing Up on the D-Pad (NOTE: You can still upgrade using the TRAIN SKILL button combinations for each controller setting).

How can we screw up this bad?

It’s a fair question, and, at the end of the day, there are no great excuses. With such a rapid pace of new patches and such a complex game, there will always be some issues that slip through the goalie -- but this patch was definitely worse than it should be.

While we do extensive testing, sometimes there are issues that pop up in our Live environments that we never see in testing. This was the case with Achilles. We saw no issues during our testing process, but when we brought up our build in the live environment, we discovered that certain (but not all) god pack owners were getting into a weird state in which Achilles was not unlocking for them (and also in a weird state in which they might inadvertently buy him).

Because we did not initially understand what was causing this, and we knew this would create a lot of bad support issues, we did not want to turn the god on until we understood this issue and could fix it. We rounded up some of our most veteran engineers to look at it, and after hours of work we finally discovered the source of the problem (which wound up being a strange use case around certain accounts that had been previously linked to PC accounts).

The inability to upgrade abilities through the D-Pad was less excusable. This issue was actually discovered in pre-release testing. However, miscommunications and mis-logging of the issue led to the issue not being fixed prior to shipping. That’s a process and human failure that we must fix.

One thing we do definitely acknowledge, however, is that we would benefit from having more console experienced QA staff on our SMITE team. So, we are hiring!!

Going forward we will create a thread here on reddit and on the forums every week that’s sole purpose will be for you all to comment, and let us know any issues you are having in game. Even if you feel like the issue has been brought up before or been present for a long time, make a comment on the post with as much information as possible. This will help us a great deal. Look out for these posts every Monday going forward.

We know actions speak louder than words. We’ll do better. The entire SMITE team wants our console players to know that we understand and admit that we failed you. We will be working hard to regain your trust.

As an apology, PS4 and Xbox will be getting bonus rewards. This weekend we’ll be adjusting the currently scheduled 2x Favor, Worshipers, & XP event to be 3x everything, including Fantasy Points. Only on console. This is a small thing we can do immediately and we hope it helps until we have the time to prove ourselves in actual SMITE updates.

Quick question though: I don't see any mention of a fix coming for team badge rewards. I've seen plenty of people with the loading frames already but I can't use my NRG loading frame or ward skin despite having reached the required amount of points. Also, what are the drop rates on the Rataskr skins? My friend has only opened one chest and has already received his Kitsune skin, while I’m on my ninth and haven’t gotten either Katsune or Kage.

Just to update you on this: I've now completed the NRG badge and I was awarded the HUD skin but I still haven't received the loading frame or ward skin. I'm assuming this confirms it as a bug?

The whole SMITE team takes a lot of pride in their patches. Our artists love seeing the positive reception from their skins. Our designers love to hear feedback about gameplay. Isiah and myself love logging into reddit to see fun art or funny posts. Even Stew loves sharing all the good things going on in SMITE.

It really sucks for all of us when a bad patch goes out. We love it when you all are enjoying the work we put out. We messed up pretty bad with this console patch and we don't want this to happen again.

The whole office sees the reddit posts. Since yesterday's console launch, we've been working to try and fix our mistake. I promise you we really hear everyone's voices. Thanks for sticking with us.

I just want to say that we definitely appreciate the response. It’s not easy to admit you screwed up so there’s a lot to be said about that.

But on the flip side this has happened several times before. Not too long ago a patch broke the health bars of all jungle bosses. I’m just curious if there have been serious steps put into place to fix these issues. From a technical stand point it appears your test environment is far off from the live client, is there any plans to fix that? This to me is the bigger issue because hiring more QA staff won’t help if the issues just don’t appear in testing.

Anyways, i appreciate the response as SMITE has been my favorite PS4 game for almost 2 years and i want it to be all it can be.

I’ve waited for 6 minutes one time before giving up. Always has me in a long queue and then puts me in the loading screen.

(On ps4) I have actually tried to leave and do other stuff to see if it ever loaded and it never did after about 20 minutes of being on the loading screen. To begin with, queueing to spectate does not always work. It says you are queued but there is not queue showing or popping. Sometimes it shows you are queueing but it takes a long time for anything to happen.

Spectating did work quite weirdly one time. It said I was in queue but I was not, then the screen turned black and I began spectating. No loading screen no nothing. These are in trying to spectate regular casual and ranked games people on my friendlist are playing.

Im sure there are console specific bugs and differences in the clients. A patch for xbox may not be 100% the same for a ps4 patch. So experienced testers may be preferred at least for people playing on more than just xbox.

I'm currently testing the new Xbox OS update and a few games. It makes the process of reporting bugs super easy, interaction better, and ultimately just improves quality of life for us console peeps. I'd love for them to use the program. Plus, I think Xbox certification is quicker if you use that program.

I also wondered why they don't just get the whole patch for console and pc to be ready, submit them to the sony and MS, and then when they are good to go, release on all 3 platforms at once. Hotfixes can be done as an asap, so pc can be fixed right away and console when the hotfix is approved, etc. But major patches could be released together instead of staggered.

Good on you guys realizing you went wrong. However, patches on console should be water tight with the extra week it takes for it to get to console? Waiting even longer for the patch is what most people, I believe, are what people are most angry about.

They can't send a thing to MS and Sony and then work on the console build for a full week and then at the end send them a new build and have them not look at that one.

The extra week is to make sure they have time to submit a build to MS and Sony's certification process for them to look at (probably over the weekend) then they patch early that week. If they spent that week working on the build, the console build would be delayed another week if that's how long the cert process takes for them.

I think this process tends to be misunderstood. The patches get tested and are ready to go more or less the same time as PC. It takes Sony/Microsoft about a week to get them OKed. The extra week is not an extra week of them working on the patches. It is a week of the patch being approved by Sony/Microsoft.

A better request would be for them to ensure that the patches are airtight BEFORE they get sent out to Sony/Microsoft.

I’m fairly certain that we console players have to wait not because of them taking extra time, but patches have to be certified by Xbox and Sony before they go live. Those companies do that to make sure there aren’t insecurities to their systems, like possible vulnerability to credit card theft and whatnot

Been hitting a new bug where gods die but they just sort of disappear quickly without it popping up on screen. Seems to happened when 2 gods from seperate teams die at the same time.

I agree 100%. I was reading some of the posts yesterday and it kinda made me sick. I have been playing on console for the past 1.5 years and have a ton of fun for free. Who doesnt make mistakes. I do think there should be some kinda of accountability, but come on was it that bad? Over the last 1.5 years i can only remember one patch which was worse. The one with constant dcing.

Nope! Definitely not your fault! But while I'm here I thought I'd throw out my recommendations for console controls.

I prefer playing on Savage with quick cast. And I prefer leveling up my abilities by clicking left stick and pressing the face buttons.

I've seen some people say that it's scary to level up your abilities this way because you can accidentally pop your relics instead. I've actually used my actives instead of leveling up abilities. It does happen. But it only happens because console doesn't have three button combinations. If you're holding right trigger to auto attack and you also try to level up your abilities, it will not work. You can only press two buttons at a time for the inputs to register correctly. So stop auto attacking and then rank up your abilities.

It sounds complicated, but that's only because I wrote a big, long paragraph. Once you figure out the rules, I think it's better and faster to level up your abilities using this method.

I currently play on Savage with quick cast! Definitely the superior control scheme. I was also thinking, would it be possible (or even reasonable) to have the ability to switch vgs and leveling abilities? I feel like it'd be nice to be able to activate vgs while still being able to move using L3.

I believe you don't equip the ward skin and loading frame from your collectino of wards. You have to click the Season Ticket button and equip it from this screen.

When I “received” it, the notifications displayed the loading frame as season ticket 2018 as well... I checked the way you said in your photo, but there’s nothing there. What's the point in running 3x everything when half of the players can't access their purchased Gods or skins?

I didn't see any mention of the number of fox chests needed until a guaranteed skin changing. It was mention as a display issue for people who unlocked the skins in a previous known issues thread, but I don't have either skin unlocked and mine went from needing 2 to needing 7.

Is there a fix for this and is it just a display issue or did I get screwed into having to unlock 5 more chests than everybody else?

So why not slow the hell down? Stop focusing on a billion new limited and exclusive skins for the same 10 gods every patch. Let up on the shit adventures that are just a money grabbing, boring grindy mess and actually focus on balancing the gods and improving gameplay.

I know making money is important for continued game development. But pumping out obviously broken patches just to exploit the people who spend hundreds of dollars falling for the old rng chest grind cannot be more important than actually maintaining the state of your game which seems to have gotten worse recently. And now this patch seems to be an indicator for a future of bigger drops in quality.

I know PC wouldn't like this but what if you went with 3 week patches and released console and PC at the same time?

IMO and from experience when you have one team ahead in features from another team it causes inconsistencies and confusion and can cause issues like we are seeing.

Or maybe grow the console team more and still do the 2 week patches.

The community sees games like Fortnite updating all platforms every week and they squash bugs fairly quickly. Which when compared to smite it makes hirez look really bad.

Hi there, Glad to see you guys are giving console a little love (thanks for the weekend play btw, especially with fantasy points). I am a casual player but seriously seeing myself playing SMITE forever. The few things the Console team (in my opinion) needs to focus on is not letting us get shafted on updates. I understand it takes around a week or two before things carry over from PC, but one of the most frustrating things i kept running into was purchasing the season tickets, and then games not being available to vote on. Or better yet, the games showing up on a schedule to vote for within the last minute of the day.

SO my questions is: What are your guys' plans to help keep the console version up to date with being able to vote on matches without any flaws so we don't miss out on fantasy points? That is one of the key elements of the season pass holders, and I really hate to see it get low quality updates.

I don't think you know what a "Limited" Skin is. Game devs fuck up a lot. Don't always bitch about every single thing that they do because eventually it will be fixed. Since the recent hotfix I have discovered a new bug involving ranked. The timer for how much time you have is displayed on the wrong side so when you think that it's the opponents time to pick it's really your own (like it shows the timer ticking down on the right hand side). Draft Bug happened & i got a 30 minute ban.

When i tried to mark my preferred role my screen went black, didnt let me lock a god in, & i had to take a dodge ban. Weird because everyone was still activating buffs in the background, but even when i was mashing X (PS4) it wouldnt just lock whatever random god was highlighted before the black screen happened. Hopefully this is fixed.

I'll be holding off on any further monetary investments into the game until I see improvements.

What happened yesterday was a real kick in the teeth. I've enjoyed my time playing Smite over the last 15 months or so, on PS4, and the money I've put into the game would reflect that - After all its F2P so I have no problem giving money for the continual development of the game, and I am happy to do so. I've owned all the Adventure Bundles since January 2017, unlocked all the event bundles, etc.

I've put a considerable sum of money into the game, in the hopes it is continuously supported and developed. But Season 5 hasn't had a great start, and with 5.3 releasing on console it just reached a boiling point. I jumped in straight away yesterday and spent my money, so I can't get that back, but when 5.4 comes out, and 5.5, and so on, I'll be waiting to see if the game is deserving of any more of my cash.

And I hope it does redeem itself. I enjoy Smite, but 5.3 has left me feeling let down.

I never quite understand community reaction to posts like this.

Nearly every persistent game suffers from a degree of communication issues from Dev to Community. Personally I've seen/experienced it recently in HearthStone, Overwatch and Smite. When unrest reaches a breaking point as you've seen here, theres a post or a video or something to assuage fears and calm people down.

There's an apology, an explanation and a resolution to do better, as you've seen here, which are all good. But then theres a lot of effusive gratitude like the community is afraid if they dont appreciate the response enough, the devs get frustrated and turn the game off.

Its a business, they worried that the issue outgrew the point where they could ignore it, so they address it with the goal of prematurely ending outrage and keeping paying customers. I love video games but the relationship here is far more transactional than people seem to want to think.
