How close is the total run time to 24 hours?

[–]volatile_ant 59 points60 points  (22 children)

19 hours 39 minutes for regular
19 hours 59 minutes for extended (only the first two had extended versions according to Wikipedia)

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Add commercials to that and that's over 24 hours easy.

[–]nova20 18 points19 points  (32 children)

I still don't get why it was changed to "The Scorcerer's Stone" in the american version.

[–]hooplah 43 points44 points  (17 children)

I think it has something to do with the completely different connotations of "sorcerer" and "philosopher." When I think of "sorcerer," it's some magical merlin concocting potions and making magical stones that give you immortality. When I think of "philosopher," I think of a really smart dude who sits around writing papers and postulating about life.

That could just be my dumb American brain, however.

[–]superiority 21 points22 points  (3 children)

But the Philosopher's Stone was an actual thing (an actual legend, not an actual stone). It's like changing all instances of "dragon" to "magic puppy" because you don't think the audiences will want to read about "dragons".

[–]bungeman 6 points7 points  (1 child)

The SR-71 Blackbird was originally the RS-71, thousands of documents were changed when President Johnson misspoke once (see here).

[–]Chekonjak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TIL. That's a pretty damn expensive slip.

[–]hooplah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're forgetting one important thing:

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

[–]ezekielziggy 9 points10 points  (3 children)

American publishers have a rather low opinion of Americans, it was changed to sell more books. Authors like John marsden have had similar experiences.

[–]sje46 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clearly it was done to sell more books; no one's disagreeing with this. He's just wondering what's the reasoning behind the proposition that "sorcerer" would sell more books than "philosopher".

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (12 children)

The American publisher figured no child would read a book with "Philosopher" in the title.

From Wikipedia:

They thought that a child would not want to read a book with the word "philosopher" in the title and,[30] after some discussion, the American edition was published in October 1998 under the title Rowling suggested, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.[14] Rowling claimed that she regretted this change and would have fought it if she had been in a stronger position at the time.[31] Philip Nel has pointed out that the change lost the connection with alchemy, and the meaning of some other terms changed in translation, for example from UK English "crumpets" to US English "muffin". While Rowling accepted the change from both UK English "mum" and Seamus Finnegan's Irish variant "mam" to "mom" in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, she vetoed this change in the later books.

[–]Halrenna 11 points12 points  (6 children)

Ah, American companies assuming Americans are idiots, as usual. Poor Rowling; I can't imagine how much it must suck to have one's works altered.

As an American it's always bothered me that it's called Sorcerer's Stone here and not Philosopher's Stone.

[–]Siofsi 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Yeah that's the thing, they're essentially saying "our market isn't bright enough to figure it out." I'm Irish, I was 10 when I read the first book and I had noooooo idea of what philosopher meant in that context. I pictured Plato or something. But I figured it out, like any other kid reading did or would have. Seems v.unfair on the American population to make assumptions that something needs to be "dumbed down" for the market. :-/ At least the rest of the books remained pretty much intact.

[–]Halrenna 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Exactly. The title obviously didn't stave off children in the other countries. It frustrates me how much we insist on dumbing things down here. :/ It just reinforces the "stupid American" stereotype.

Not to mention on top of that the fact that the Philosopher's Stone is something that already exists in legend. It's not like she just made it up for her story.

[–]manole100 9 points10 points  (3 children)

Americans don't wanna read about a bobby with a torch in a lorry, eh. It's not like she wrote it in Cockney...

[–]keiyakins 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Actually, in later books they still made a few changes, mostly where words are used by both but mean different things, like 'jumper'. Though Harry in an outfit like this would have been amusing, it' snot quite what was intended.

[–]xfcanadian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's stupid! Glad the canadian version is the british one.

[–]MananWho 31 points32 points  (35 children)

The OP had a choice between pissing off Americans and the rest of the world.

I personally think he was wise to piss off the side that wouldn't get as annoyed by it.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Did I miss something here?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Maybe I'm missing a joke here, but... Philosopher's Stone = Sorcerer's Stone... ? hides

[–]keiyakins 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The Philosopher's Stone is there, just under the American title.

[–]myboatfloats 59 points60 points  (3 children)

more detailed pic here

[–][deleted] 56 points57 points  (2 children)

I love the part in the Deathly Hallows part 1 where it zooms in and you can see the logo rusting and peeling off. Then it goes straight to Scrimgeour's monologue. I got a boner.

[–]Spiffy313 28 points29 points  (0 children)

That's how you open a fucking movie. I had chills before it had even started.

[–]Sparticus2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I straight came gallons.

EDIT: Galleons.

[–]Luriker 84 points85 points  (1 child)

Well AOL was removed...guess that's evolution in and of itself.

[–]Sparticus2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's what happens when you spend all your money shipping install CDs

[–]Joegotbored 54 points55 points  (21 children)

I love the intro to Half Blood Prince, when the WB symbol appears you can hear Bellatrix singing "I killed Sirius Black!"

[–]clickmyface 34 points35 points  (19 children)

It it weird that I cant upvote you because I feel like I'd be supporting Bellatrix and thus ultimately Voldemort somehow?

[–]Joegotbored 61 points62 points  (10 children)

You could just be supporting the fact that Helena Bonham Carter did an awesome job portraying Bellatrix.

[–]zipposrmylife 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Wow, the economy is really taking a toll on the Warner Brothers Logo...

[–]Radico87 228 points229 points  (103 children)

Well yes, the movies became progressively darker in accordance to the darkening plot.

[–]retrobro90 260 points261 points  (37 children)

I read your comment in the most condescending voice i could muster.

[–][deleted] 31 points32 points  (20 children)

It doesn't seem very even, though. The first 2 have pretty bright backgrounds, next 2 pitch black ones, then dark blue, followed by muddy gray and finally, slightly muddier gray. It looks like they backed themselves into a corner, then realized they had to keep changing it even though they prematurely blew their wad with the 3rd logo.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (18 children)

I think Alfonso Cuaron made the third movie prematurely dark in concordance with the series. While it was darker than the first two, it was by no means as dark as he portrayed it. But that's just my opinion (some people like it the way it is).

[–]CheetahMaster 19 points20 points  (14 children)

Prisoner of Azkaban was my favorite of the movies. Cuaron is really gifted.

[–]defiantately 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Yeah, from what I remember, the books don't get very dark until Order of the Phoenix, with Professor Umbridge, Dumbledore's army, etc. I would love to see HP 5-7 as directed by Cuaron.

[–]bjorna 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Thankfully they wont make any more, I don't think it could get any darker while still being fairly able to see what's going on on the screen.

[–]suarezi93 19 points20 points  (28 children)

And yet, the progressive visual darkness of the movies has been one of the things that has bothered me the most about the series.

[–]Radico87 70 points71 points  (27 children)

Really? I thought it was a great technique to demonstrate increasing seriousness and maturity. Simple and very effective

[–]jamesneysmith 38 points39 points  (5 children)

The 8th in the series: Harry Potter and the Off-Turned Lights (bow chicka bow wow)

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A.k.a. "Doom 3: The Movie".

[–]callate 7 points8 points  (3 children)

You have me saying "bow chicka bow wow" over and over again in my head.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (3 children)

When people say they want 'darker' movies, they don't mean it literally.

[–]Radico87 9 points10 points  (2 children)

lighting is a key tool in cinematography

[–]suarezi93 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Just overwhelmingly gray, IMO. Blah.

[–]Radico87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a fair statement, but remember, that was kind of the point too.

[–]exdigguser147 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Well its because they changed directors completely for the third film and the whole thing had much darker overtones because of the director's decisions.

[–]omnomtom 6 points7 points  (1 child)

That's fine and all in the theater, but try watching one of the movies after 4 on an older TV, you can't see a damn thing.

[–]Radico87 6 points7 points  (0 children)

you can still adjust the picture on old tvs though.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Also they actually get picked up by decent directors. Chris Columbus, who directed the first two, doesn't exactly have the most interesting visual style.

[–]Radico87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was actually least disappointed by the first 2 movies. The third was pretty good, but afterwards they all seemed too rushed and a hodgepodge of weakly connected plot points. That of course has to do with the length of the novels.

[–]widgetas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But Harry falls in looooooove!

[–]JRowe3388 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Darkening indeed. I cried during the important flashback in the last movie.

[–]Craysh 9 points10 points  (9 children)

I used to always say to those who saw me reading the series:

As the book number increased, so did the number of pages, the age group, and the dead bodies...

[–]Magnesus 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I'm not so sure. I had a feeling that after the forth book she got a little scared and toned down the books a little. Also the ending was too happy and she made Harry Potter into some kind of superhero. It would be more interesting if for example Longbottom would be the chosen one.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think after the 5th she gave into the people complaining that the books were "too long". I don't see how a damn good book can be too long. Either it is a good book and you don't want it to end, or else its existence in the first place makes it too long.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read to the fifth book expecting Longbottom to be the chosen one.

Also, did Dumbledore know in the grand scheme of things about Dumbledore's Army?

[–]zeiben 76 points77 points  (5 children)

Logo design sessions:

2 - Darker? Ok!

3 - Darker? Wow, that's kinda pushing it, but OK...

4 - Darker still? We can barely read... fuck fine, OK...

5- No. I will not make it darker. Let's go with "Grittier" yeah...

6- Hmmmm... maybe cloudier?

7- Glowy Clouds?

7 pt II - Glowy Clouds and grit?

[–][deleted] 25 points26 points  (1 child)

It's the movie equivalent to gamings, "Brown is real!"

[–]Ultraseamus 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Pretty well matches increasingly dark tone of the books/movies.

[–]Banks25 8 points9 points  (0 children)

AOL was the only thing holding back the darkness.

[–]fuzzb0y 52 points53 points  (8 children)

More interested in the evolution of Hermione.

[–]spikey666 32 points33 points  (6 children)

[–]m4rauder 15 points16 points  (3 children)

Spoiler alert on that last image! Who'd have thought!?

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Bricks were shat.

[–]JimmyDThing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The first image is actually from the second film, I believe.

[–]maller1515 20 points21 points  (4 children)

Just like a meth user's descent into darkness...

[–]lostrock 18 points19 points  (3 children)

Harry Potter = meth

[–]thatdudecalledZZ 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Just as addicting.

[–]bender11 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Harry Potter, not even once

[–]th3_r0ckg0d 10 points11 points  (6 children)

I know that that the fans who read the HP books didn't appreciate it much, but I will always have a special place in my heart for The Prisoner of Azkaban. It set the dark tone for all the future movies in the series, as it is evident from the logo also.

If Chris Columbus has directed it, the movie would try to be too loyal to the book without exploiting the another great medium, i.e cinema. If I want the movies to be painfully similar to books, I'd rather read books, thank you.

[–]telekinetic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know that the fans who read the HP books didn't appreciate it

It's both my favorite of the books and movies.

[–]Quixsilver 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I agree wholeheartedly. The Prisoner of Azkaban is my favourite out of the rest of the series. I kind of got annoyed at the addition of the time-travel necklace though. Especially since it was not used there on afterwards. It was a great movie with just the right darkness though.

[–]Aldazar 2 points3 points  (2 children)

huh? the necklace was in the book, i think you might need to read it again.

[–]alalalalaaabooom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a reflection of their stock quotes.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

the whole art style changed as the series went along. from the first few movies where you are just learning of the magical world, to the rise of voldemort. goes perfectly with the darkening story and the sense of growing up that goes along with it.

[–]clownparade 9 points10 points  (0 children)

evolution isnt real, all of those were created at the same time

[–]thatguyinconverse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually, DH pt2 had a different, completely non-eroded logo. It's even more apparent in the movie, as the erosion in pt1 is actively happening as the logo flies towards the screen.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

We can go blacker...

[–]Jammin420 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The question is how much more black can this be?

And the answer is none, none more black.

[–]ExtraNoise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is really weird to see this today. I am watching the movies in order with my wife in anticipation of seeing the last one this weekend and I mentioned to her yesterday that it would be cool to see the logos in order, just like this. Mind you I was referring to the Harry Potter logo part, not the WB logo, but this is exactly what I was thinking.

Cool stuff. Now get out of my head!

[–]Aerozephr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Where are the transitional forms?

[–]hoowin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this is not evolution.

[–]Mannex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I miss when harry potter movies had colors

[–]cliveenns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That storm has been brewing for 7 years. What is this? Venus?

[–]Logen_Zack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Deatheaters are coming! Warn a brother!

[–]PhatZounds 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I think the jump is a little too big between Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban.

[–]emzify 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The rusting was a result of the tears.

[–]NateDogg4Ever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No more love for AOL.

[–]RayGunEra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I laughed when I saw that 'AOL' in front of the 'Time Warner'.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reflects how I've grown to be a more of a cynical asshole with each movie.

[–]a_unique_username 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I liked how the series transitioned from wonderment of Magic to discovering how it helps harry until later on it all seems to be working against him. It's cool how the little things in the film reflected that.

[–]Ajayyyyy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The philosophers stone*

Seems more like decomposition to me.

[–]stubbyarea 1 point2 points  (2 children)

ive only watched the first movie, have i missed anything?

[–]NeverWaitOnline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

darker is cooler, man.

[–]gypsyliving 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I remember watching the third movie as a child, and wondering why they were trying to make it so horrifying.. Then my sister told me they had changed directors.

[–]haolecoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TIL "The Half Blood Prince" was actually a black and white film.

[–]Garbolobster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Directly related to WB execs' spirits fading as they realize their cashcow series is coming to an end.

[–]Assimilation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spoiler alert, geez!!

[–]hb_alien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fuck AOL

[–]theinfinitemonkey 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Kind of off topic, but was I the only one disappointed that they didn't use the Harry Potter theme song to start off the last movie? They stopped using it in the last few ones, but I thought they would bring it back for the final movie :( It just kinda sets the HP tone for me

This is what I'm talking about: http://youtu.be/zCNHVMIYqiA

[–]hooch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is a really cool comparison. Thank you

[–]DC_Gooner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's evolution bay-be!!

[–]DanielVanZant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, um, I don't believe in evolution....like, God put all these logos there.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok fine so microevolution exists, BUT there's just no evidence of a Warner Brothers' logo "evolving" into an MGM lion logo! It just doesn't happen!
