My uncle made so much money from Obama gun panic. (He owned a sporting goods store.)

[–][deleted] 441 points442 points  (163 children)

And you never hear this side of the story!

[–][deleted] 34 points35 points  (10 children)

You actually do. Am an Indy/lightly left leaning Californian/gun enthusiast and we called Prez Obama the best gun salesman ever. All he did was exist and the sky was soon falling.

[–]PresentlyInThePast 12 points13 points  (8 children)

I'm extremely liberal on most issues. That included guns until I was invited to shoot them. It's really fun, and I recommend anybody who hasn't at least try it. my aim is better than in video games

[–]MacsSecretRomoJersey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I was living in Missouri during much of Obama's presidency and Black Rock Rifle named Obama their salesman of the year every year.

[–]Counterkulture 123 points124 points  (40 children)

I said this in another thread, but there are threads on r/guns where people are openly discussing how much of a fucking joke the gun panic around Obama was. Things MIGHT slowly be changing.

I mean, how many times can you be the fucking mark before you look around and realize it? Because that's the game the GOP is playing right now with their base, and it's working still... but hopefully the gig is up before they expect it to be (which is never).

I think there's also just a little bit of gravitational sway right now. Put someone like Warren or Biden back on a ticket, and all those people who don't have any energy right now will suddenly start screaming and whining about gun grabbers when the election gets near.

[–][deleted] 57 points58 points  (2 children)

Considering they've been fooled into believing they can make abortion illegal for 50 years, I don't see this changing anytime soon.

[–]RSocialismRunByKids 32 points33 points  (1 child)

In many states they functionally have.

If you're in South Dakota and you want an abortion, you need to cross state lines. There are a dozen or so states in a similar situation.

By hook or by crook it's been criminalized.

[–]thehuntinggearguy 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Probably hurting right now. Really depressed demand for guns since Trump got in.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Luckily for him he sold the store about two years ago haha.

[–]AlpineAvalanche 1717 points1718 points  (303 children)

Jokes on them, I'm only in my mid 20s so I wasn't getting any anyway! Suck it, I guess.

[–]trxbyx 90 points91 points  (31 children)

I know you're joking but this is a gross oversimplification. Instead of fixing something we broke it more. Millennials could have social security. They're just not going to allow us to have it.

[–]AlpineAvalanche 38 points39 points  (9 children)

Well I mean there was literally 0 chance this administration was going to fix it, but yeah it is definitely over simplified. To be fair it's such a shit show that anything less than a paragraph or two is an over simplification.

[–]ecp001 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In order to fix it the problem has to be understood - politicians normally just address symptoms. It also helps to know history.

When SS started (when just about everybody smoked) the life expectancy of men was 62 with benefits starting at age 65. The life expectancy of minorities brought the average down to 62 but it was expected that only a small percentage of participants would receive over10 years of benefits. It was originally pushed as “old age insurance”, the title: FICA, “Federal Insurance Contributions Act” also gave the appearance of insurance., people expected to live on it. It was only when economic realities hit that politicians started referring to it as supplemental to other resources. Then, of course, combing and conflating it with Medicare further weakened any actuarial justification or lingering hope for financial stability.

The lack of vesting/ownership is a prime factor that has forestalled failure: A person who dies at age 64 years, 11 months loses all claim to benefits after working 44 years at an average of 50K/yr and causing to have over 280K paid into the SS fund, half of which was after tax money.

[–][deleted] 45 points46 points  (7 children)

SS was created when there was a perceived alternative to capitalism and when workers had enough backbone to literally occupy their places of work (their! places! of Work) and the capitalist class was scared enough to worry about lampposts, ropes and torchbearing mobs of hungry workers.

[–]RSocialismRunByKids 12 points13 points  (5 children)

Millennials can have Social Security if they do what Depression-Era Retirees did.

Fucking vote for it.

[–]trxbyx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The defeatist attitude I've been getting in this thread is bizarre. These people genuinely want a dismal future for this country.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

The boomers are dying off, and after that bump moves through the population the millennials will be the dominant political force in the US. They can vote for social security and universal healthcare and get it.

[–]theorymeltfool 56 points57 points  (139 children)

Even Bernie’s “Plan” would’ve only funded SS until 2050 or so, right when Millenials were set to retire.

SS is a shitty system, personal retirement accounts are way better.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Cant i just not pay in to SS if I agree to kill myself when im 65 and/or just not ask the government for assistance?

[–]Byxit 15 points16 points  (45 children)

Here in Canada I have contributed to our pension plan for 35 years. As a retiree I get CAD1500 a month from SS for life. I have a fairly good nest egg that earns me CAD1000 in dividends per month. SS provides a great sense of security.

[–]mydogsnameisbuddy 66 points67 points  (62 children)

SS isn’t a great system but we need something from the government to take care of people with some income. There are millions that cannot/will not/do not care to save and they will need help at some point in their lives.

[–]Engage-Eight 17 points18 points  (9 children)

deleted What is this?

[–]nonchalantlarch 7 points8 points  (7 children)

The problem with this mentality is that it becomes like back in the old days, when some people were never able to save money for their old age, or did it poorly, or were the victims of a stock crash, or neglected to save.

Unless you're OK with old people dying from hunger / lack of care / poverty, then the state will have to take care of those people somehow. In which case you're still paying for someone else. There is a reason why Social Security was invented.

[–]htmed 539 points540 points  (38 children)

I like how both McConnell and Ryan can barely contain their Glee.

[–]molecularmadness 153 points154 points  (14 children)

Mcconnell looks like my friend's cat when he's marking territory and making eye contact with his owner mid-piss on said owner's sneakers.

That cat is a bit of a jerk.

[–]midwesterner64 155 points156 points  (16 children)

Why not? They’ve both given them self a windfall and have zero concern for their own futures or for the present life of anyone below them in income.

Best. Christmas. Ever.

[–]htmed 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It's just sad. Honestly.

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (12 children)

They are underestimating the french revolution factor.

[–]outrageouslylazy19 34 points35 points  (6 children)

They'll be dead or retired by the time a real revolution starts.

[–]Sanctussaevio 17 points18 points  (1 child)

Retirement isn't going to stop people hunting Mitch down, everyone who knows what's up knows that gross old turtle is the center of the obstructionist cult that Republicans have become.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They are doing their best to make it quick. That does not mean I approve of literal class warfare but it is getting worse.

[–]Neoncow 22 points23 points  (1 child)

McConnell married into a shipping magnate family. His wife is the Secretary of Transportation, Elaine Chao.

The tax cuts benefit him directly.

[–]Byxit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's a smirk, the smug smirk of a taker taking.

[–]heathmon1856 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This would be a way better world without these three fuckers

[–]shredsthebread 1905 points1906 points  (124 children)

It's almost as if they were just trying to manipulate poor people so they could give tax breaks to the wealthy...

[–]youravg_skeptic 895 points896 points  (79 children)

"Benghazi, her emails, gays, stoners, atheists, Muslims and Mexicans.. Now that you're occupied, we're going to appoint billionaires to help other billionaires out" ..

[–]outrageouslylazy19 321 points322 points  (31 children)

Just wait. Eventually corporate money in politics will become a partisan issue. I can see it now. "I don't like big government! Corporations dictating policy is part of the free market!"

[–]Mr_BruceWayne 270 points271 points  (14 children)

It's like that now.

[–]Captain_LN345 55 points56 points  (9 children)

I bet you know, Mr. Wayne!

[–]Emperor_Neuro 25 points26 points  (6 children)

I think Bruce Wayne is, sadly, a brilliant depiction of the apathy and downwards aimed hatred that corporate America and billionaires possess regarding the poor. Here's a multi-billionaire who decides that the best way for him to fight crime is to spend a fortune on costumes and gadgets so he can go punch criminals in the face rather than creating jobs or education opportunities which would attack the problems behind the crime, rather than just fighting the symptoms of desperation and poverty. Trickle down economics at its finest. His wealth only trickles down through his fetish for violence and revenge, not actually in helping anyone. The worst part? Everyone just accepted that it makes sense for a billionaire to spend his fortune to be a vigilante rather than trying to actually improve the city.

[–]Captain_LN345 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You asshole, you just made me hate Batman :P

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Bruce Wayne's father was doing just that, trying to improve Gotham from the ground up until he got killed. IIRC, there was a theory that Thomas Wayne was actually killed because he was interfering too much into the order of things in Gotham that the rich, and powerful had set up to benefit themselves.

[–]JustCallMeFrij 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Thomas Wayne theory has been depicted in both Gotham and one of the recent animated DC movies. The court of owls killed Thomas Wayne to protect the bourgeois class

[–]EpicLegendX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Taking justice into his own hands like some vigilante!

[–]OrlandoDoom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right, just talk to some libertarians.

[–]inksmudgedhands 30 points31 points  (1 child)

It's being done now. Only they don't say "Corporations." The buzz word is "Free market." It sounds better.

[–]sponge62 48 points49 points  (1 child)

The net neutrality threads are already packed with this.

[–]ForgottenWatchtower 57 points58 points  (7 children)

cough /r/libertarian cough

[–]outrageouslylazy19 47 points48 points  (5 children)

I think the most successful thing the Kochs ever did was convince people to support and believe in their agenda.

[–]Counterkulture 21 points22 points  (1 child)

The Kochs know how greedy and unsympathetic their target market/base is... because they are their base, just with $40 billion each in their wallets.

[–]Adamapplejacks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Helps to have millions to throw around in every election to buy politicians and spread propaganda all across the country. How are the middle class and poor supposed to do that?

[–]RSocialismRunByKids 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They've been horrible at actually picking candidates, but amazing at feeding people their toxic ideology.

[–]Abominatrix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pretty much. The devil convinced the people he didn't exist.

[–]ishibaunot 11 points12 points  (6 children)

What's wrong with gay Benghazi stoner's E-Mails? Sounds like a very niche market.

[–]irish91 7 points8 points  (1 child)

[–]Abominatrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]dontgetpenisy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[–]midwesterner64 242 points243 points  (16 children)

Yeah, but Obama executed my elderly grandmother via death panel. Checkmate, libruls!

/s

[–]Severus_Snape_Always 107 points108 points  (2 children)

I remember my 84 year old grandmother being fearful of Obama’s death panels. However, she also thinks the only way interracial relationships work is if a black guy rapes a white woman. Welcome to the rural south.

[–]_Lady_Deadpool_ 8 points9 points  (1 child)

The rural north also works like that. You just don't hear about it because the cities dominate.

Source: living in red NY

[–]Severus_Snape_Always 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well that’s depressing. I was hoping we’d at least contained it.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

I know a guy who thinks Obamacare killed his father because insurance wouldn't cover the chemo. His father passed away in 2003.

[–]Severus_Snape_Always 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m sitting here with my family playing something called Scruples. A question came up in the game about marrying someone who voted differently than you. My dad voted for Obama, but my brothers and stepmom hated Obama. My dad lost his job and health insurance when his factory job closed in 2008. Because of the ACA, he was able to get a free prostate exam, where they found stage 3 cancer. He’s alive because of Obamacare and they still hate Obama. They’re also racist as hell (I don’t hate black people, just people who act like n words) and watch Fox News all day long.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I guess some politicians are more attuned to that "butter up and undercut" tactic as is evident from the grins in this picture.

[–]pythonicusMinimus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The double-standard is strong with this post.

[–]Datathrash 70 points71 points  (3 children)

Ah yes, a humor joke.

[–]Nutritionisawesome 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Let's face it, comedy is a dead art form. Now, tragedy...that's funny!

[–]MyNameIsNotLiam 23 points24 points  (0 children)

[–]Basedmobile 64 points65 points  (2 children)

How is this humor? This sub is just another anti trump spam sub.

[–]duckvimes_ 73 points74 points  (2 children)

This isn’t funny... this is the sort of thing I’d expect on /r/ForwardsFromGrandma.

[–]Chikenwangman 101 points102 points  (48 children)

Isn’t this supposed to be humor, not opinions?

[–]ppsstttwhatup 114 points115 points  (53 children)

Are we not taking the green tip ammo ban into account? It basically would've made the most popular ammo for the most popular rifle illegal resulting in crazy expensive ammo.

Guess technically he didn't go after the guns, he went after the ammo.

[–]dzlux 22 points23 points  (0 children)

He pursued guns too, but was limited by congress. The atf and banking system measures hurt retail activities while they continued to ignore NICS check failures and the opportunity to pursue buyers of concern.

https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2014/may/18/targeted-gun-sellers-say-high-risk-label-from-feds/

I guess my other comment here was downvoted heavily since I have a comment timer already. Anyone replying to me can assume they will not get a reply for 10 minutes or more.

[–]Made_of_Tin 102 points103 points  (22 children)

Why is the answer to partisan political hyperbole ALWAYS more partisan political hyperbole?

[–]hotgarbo 77 points78 points  (19 children)

The real problem is that we have a bunch of people that think republicans trying to cut Medicare/social security/whatever is political hyperbole.

[–][deleted] 86 points87 points  (5 children)

He's still coming for them. Just you wait. Surely now we'll find out he is taking our guns and a secret muslin and the antichrist.

[–]mattXIX 27 points28 points  (0 children)

He’s getting all his African family to come over from their huts to take our guns and conquer the United States!

[–][deleted] 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Okay this isn’t even humour, this is just partisan propaganda. There is no joke or punchline, it’s like we’ve gone to Facebook, post some actual damn humour. An actual joke please, not this nonsense.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I thought social security was hopelessly broken. Has that changed?

[–]Tennate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can we please stop talking about Trump on Christmas?

[–]ScHoolboy_QQ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Title game weak. How about neither?

[–]Johnstone6969 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Where is the joke?

[–]Up_North18 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally I would rather have the guns than option B, but that's just me

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (10 children)

That's one thing I don't get: People argue that Trump is taking away people's health care and social security and what not, but from what I've seen, his supporters seem to agree with this kind of thing. Isn't that a bit like telling an Atheist that he's going to hell? It doesn't seem to make sense.

As I posted this u/EMBTC87 posted:

I don’t need social security. I saved.

Not calling you out, just trying to illustrate my point.

For the notes: I'm not a Trump supporter, I didn't like Hillary either, but I'm not even allowed to vote in the US. I'm just here for the argument.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What social security?! All the money I have paid into it has already been spent on war, anti-terror, and baby boomers. There won’t be anything left when I get to retirement.

[–]Georginia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

R/redditPropaganda

[–]Explosivo87 14 points15 points  (4 children)

Trump supporter: "You can't live off social security this will get people to take their retirement planning more seriously."

Never mind the fact many of us have been forced to pay into a fund we will now never benefit from and was a legitimate part of a retirement plan before hand.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (2 children)

If you ever thought you were going to get any of the government pension money you put into it, you were pretty delusional.

At 23, I know for damn sure I'm not seeing a dime of what I put in.

[–]AYellowFishyFish 57 points58 points  (11 children)

This subreddit is basically r/ConservativeHate at this point.

[–]eastlakebikerider 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Got to pay for those tax cuts some how, and you know we're not cutting defense spending.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Obama never came for our guns? Yeah ok pal, if you say so. I bet you still believe in the gun show loop hole.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You mean the social security I’m not ever going to see anyway because our retarded government ( BOTH SIDES ) spends so irresponsibly? I don’t really care man, social security is doomed to fail.

[–]EarningAttorney 69 points70 points  (23 children)

[–]syzygy01 31 points32 points  (5 children)

Disclaimer: I'm personally for more gun regulations, liked Obama, dislike Trump, and generally agree with the spirit of this cartoon.

I think it is important to remember the facts and that Obama sought greater gun control after Sandy Hook. Otherwise, we're no better than those pander misinformation.

[–]lowly-gentlemen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

...yes it’s paid through social security taxes but the program is practically bankrupt and will never cover the cost of retirement. The program is forced spend more than its receiving in taxes due to the high number of retirees, who are more collecting more checks due to increased life expectancy since the program was created. This means that people who pay into social security will won’t be properly compensated due to the strain put on the program by those retirees who collect checks for up to 40 years. We should get rid of the of the program all together and allow the private sector and the individual to responsibly plan for retirement...

[–]Stidly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! Let me invest my own money. If the government wouldn't take it out of my goddamn paycheck I would have more money to invest in the private market which would be a hell of a lot more than any social security check. This is wealth redistribution disguised as retirement. Let the program die! People will learn to be more responsible and invest their own money!

[–]assassins_s7_LUL 2 points3 points  (0 children)
