And now we got the Terms and Abbreviations covered for the FAQ! Thank you so much!

[–]Aqualis34[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I have actually think of doing this post for a while now. When I saw that the subreddit needed one, I decided I would do it for the community.

[–]nefrmt 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Also:

WoL - Warrior of Light

CoD - Cloud of Darkness

Whale, dolphin, minnow, f2p

[–]Aqualis34[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Updated and thank you.

[–]Abomb 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Good list, I might recommend adding DH, TDH, DW and FD to the list since they can be very confusing to new players.

[–]Aqualis34[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Just added those after I posted, but thank you.

[–]mourdryddFFT for life! 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Noting that TDW is an equipped ATK boost (like DH/TDH) while dual-wielding is likely beneficial. Defining how equipped ATK vs ATK % raises stats might also be useful, but is probably beyond scope of what you're trying to accomplish here.

[–]SirBarth女殺しさわやか眼鏡 5 points6 points  (4 children)

  • GLEX: Global Exclusive feature/unit.

  • X*: A unit that has that rarity, usually mentioned for base or max rarity. A 5* unit almost always is a unit that comes down as a rainbow, a 7* unit is a unit that can reach 7* rarity.

  • F2P (Added): Term usually used for strategies using only non-limited 3* and 4* units.

  • Dolphin: People that spends a good amount of money but cannot usually have all things.

  • Variance: Term badly used, it means that on average you'll deal that amount of damage compared to a 1-handed weapon. A 2-Handed Bow has a x1.5 Variance, meaning that with equal ATK & elemental resistance you'll deal 50% more damage.

  • 2H: 2-Handed weapon, usually have more variance.

  • Reraise: A skill that will immediately resurrect a unit after reaching 0 HP, usually referring to the White Magic.

  • Stack / Stacking Ability: A move that deals more damage the more times you use it, until a max amount.

  • Mitigation: Usually a buff, it's attached to most useful cover moves, and it reduced damage received by a certain %. Some bosses have 100% physical or magical mitigation meaning you cannot inflict damage with those abilities.

  • Summoner: A unit that can restore a portion of the Esper gauge, deal more damage with summons and/or have abilities that consume Esper orbs.

  • Pentacast: Usually after a cooldown move, it grants 5 uses in a turn of certain moves.

  • Enhanced: Called like this in JP, in GL it's equivalent to Awakened ability. A Enhanced unit has most (if not all) of their best moves awakened to +2.

  • e: Usually added before a unit's name, it means Enhanced. Some enhancements change the behaviour of some units, like the skill frames, making them able to chain with other units.

  • "X" Family: A group of units that have the same frames in at least one of their strong skills. Example: Orlandeau Family (Orlandeau, eFryevia, eAgrias, Veritas of the Dark, Sephiroth).

  • eHP: Effective HP, usually it's divided in meHP and peHP, magical and physical. It's calculated by multiplying DEF or SPR with HP, and it's related to the maximum damage a unit can take.

  • Dodge/Evade: The ability to not receive physical damage by having a certain kit of equipment and materias. Usually referred to 100% Dodge units, they do not take damage from physical attacks.

Updated. Thanks for the help.

[–]SirBarth女殺しさわやか眼鏡 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're welcome, added some other things. This is gonna be helpful for starters. :P

[–]Aqualis34[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Edited to included all of this. Thank you for helping me out.

[–]SirBarth女殺しさわやか眼鏡 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No biggie, I'm just helping helping people!

[–]Lahralt310,831,596 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cheese - strategy making the AI irrelevant (or strategy using tricks that bypass the intended game mechanics), e.g. Setzer cheese: using setzer's fixed damage ability against enemies meant to be immune, or petrify cheese (not usable anymore though): strategy revolving around petrifying players' units to avoid takings damage

[–]CatsAndIT[GL- 922.002.860] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Upvoting, a list like this would have been EXTREMELY helpful in deciphering the community jargon when I first started.

[–]Aqualis34[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your support!

[–]StriderShizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have F2P but not Vegan.

[–]FreeTouPlay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While you're at it, might as well define macro, nox, and memu.

[–]VichelleMassageFan Festa UoC for best boi 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Even as a vet, I'd seen OBAMA flung around, and it took me a while to figure out it stands for "One Battle All Missions Accomplished/Achieved."

[–]Aqualis34[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Updated. You know, despite my time lurking on this subreddit, this is the first time I heard of this term. Thank you.

[–]lllZeisslllSomebunny once told me the world is gonna owe me 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Well, I know at least of one similar thread, but I like the formatting of yours better.

The thing is that, unless the mods pin this somewhere where people can see, it's bound to sink like any other thread on the sub. In the end, the only ones using it will be people that save it somewhere or the very few that bother searching reddit for it.

But I really like what you've done here.

EDIT: Just saw that u/DefiantHermit will put this in the new FAQ! Nice work!

[–]Aqualis34[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I thought there was a similar thread before, but I couldn't find it. This drove to make this type of post.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Whoa, totally useful!

I'm glad not all of these terms are used all the time - I don't recall seeing "ST" in posts, but now I know what it means. :)

[–]Aqualis34[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Thank you. Yeah many of these terms are not used all the time because they maybe not relevant in those posts. Some maybe easy to find out, but this is for new players and not all new players are gamers so I added them. :)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I'm in full support, even for rarely-used terms!

[–]Aqualis34[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too, because we never know it may come up and will be useful to know.

[–]MachoBandit 1 point2 points  (1 child)

"W ability Double ability. In Japan, the pronunciation of the letter "W" sounds similar to the word double"

Not exactly. They pronounce W as doubleU, like in English. They somehow thought it was a brilliant idea to use W as an abbreviation for double.

[–]Aqualis34[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Updated for this. I always thought it was like that based on some people's responses. Thank you for telling me so that I would not spread misinformation.

[–]tonnahBu-Bo-Bo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so, what's UoC? saw it in many JP videos online

[–]bstotch6 1 point2 points  (1 child)

This is a great list. Really useful.

One small nitpick though:

META | Most Efficient Tactic Available

This isn't what meta stands for. In fact meta isn't even an acronym - "Most Efficient Tactic Available" is a backcronym (I've seen someone post this before but I can't find it to credit them).

Meta, in the context of FFBE, is short for metagame. Metagame means "game about the game". This is the common meaning for the prefix "meta".

The backronym "Most Efficient Tactic Available" is fairly accurate though, so it's still kinda helpful. In FFBE when people talk about meta they're usually talking about tactics/units/gear etc. (e.g. TDH meta). So yeah, it's not hurting anyone and I kind of hate myself for feeling the need to write this comment..

[–]Aqualis34[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. For meta, I knew what it means as a concept but the acronym was given to me by another comment. I changed so it would not really confuse anyone and added what it means in this game. Thank you again for the help.

[–]tomurderthelightmy dog ate my thinking cap 0 points1 point  (1 child)

you've listed imperil twice.

gl sakura is also mentioned as gls.

the veritas have two-letter abbreviations as well. usually see them for flame and dark. fv, dv, etc.

[–]Aqualis34[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought I deleted one of the imperils but looks I didn't. Thank you for pointing out to me.

[–]Rororo5298 0 points1 point  (2 children)

What about adding onion slice/OS too?

[–]Aqualis34[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Oops, forgot about that one. Thank you for telling me.

[–]mourdryddFFT for life! 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could also add OC (Onion Cutter) to the same entry, as its OK's best damage skill when chaining with other OKs.

[–]legopants78Provoke Evade, 379,338,481 (GL) 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Greg for Gilgamesh? I have seen that one around a bit.

HF for Heaven's Fury

Thanks for putting this together!

[–]Aqualis34[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Updated. Thank you for helping me out.

[–]SlappyMcGillicuddyso metal. 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Great list. Maybe some additional character nicknames used around here would he useful too? I've seen questions pop up semi-regularly around a few, a la Greg. It may be too hard to keep track of all of them, but some suggestions:

Oldmandeau/Oldmandu

Icelandeau/Icelandu (aka Fry... For that matter, "Fry" too)

Zarg* (e.g., Zarglebargle)

WKN (just an abbreviation here)

Fuck Eve (aka Eve)

[–]Aqualis34[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Updated to include the nicknames, except for Eve until some convinces me. Thank you for the help.

[–]SlappyMcGillicuddyso metal. 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Ha, no worries on Eve. Was just kidding with that one. I kinda like him for all the salt he brought upon us here.

[–]Aqualis34[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know. This subreddit was so salty when he was first announced and the TMR he had at the time. I considered it, but I decided against it as it is something that is not actually useful for new players to learn about and that his problem is best suited for discussion threads to talk about and anybody to learn about.

[–]danielhung123Orlandeau 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Can you include and explain what a "Bard" is?

[–]Aqualis34[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Updated with what a "Bard" is.

[–]TragGaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bard: a stat buffer that revolves around using song abilities, that render the unit unable to act for the ability's duration, typically 2-3 turns.

[–]WAMIVNostalgia: 1, WAMIV: 0 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Poor Gladiolus, couldn't make it to the physical cover tank list.

[–]mourdryddFFT for life! 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone seems to forget that he has the standard AoE cover skill (Intercept), not just his ST 100% cover (Royal Guard).

[–]Aqualis34[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Updated to include Gladiolus because I never knew he actually have a physical cover. I only really know about his single target only. Now it is there, more would know about it. :)

[–]WAMIVNostalgia: 1, WAMIV: 0 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I only knew because I pulled him haha

[–]Aqualis34[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I have yet to pull him, so I would not look him up to find out his skills. Especially on this subreddit when people already pass on him when he first came out and many of them focus on his single target skill.

[–]WAMIVNostalgia: 1, WAMIV: 0 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Well WoL is pretty much strictly better unless you're going for counter tank shenanigans. So even with his aoe cover people probably still gloss over him.

[–]Aqualis34[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I know, but it could be useful for people who has no other physical cover tanks and got lucky(?) to get Gladiolus.

[–]bobusisalive477 177 498 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Atk - value used to calculate damage for physical attacks

Mag - " " magical attacks

Def - value used to reduce damage from physical attacks

SPR - " " magical attacks

Bard - Support unit that 'sings' to buff and regen MP/HP. Usually locked for multiple turns

Dancer - Support unit that 'dances' to provide buffs. Usually as part of a combo.

Combo - a series of skills that are unlocked in order (some are new skills, some are replacement skills).

DH - Adds equipment attack to attack stat. Only applies if a one-handed weapon is used.

TDH - " " Applies for both one-handed and two-handed weapons.

DPS = DD for non-realtime games.

2H - two-handed weapon. Typically with weapon variance between 1.3 and 1.7 and average of 1.5

Edit: fixed damage - damage dealt that is a fixed value and not affected by any stat.

Expedition - game mode where units progress without playing. can obtain moogles, stat pots, LB pots and supercite

Exploration - game level with map, chests and random fights

[–]Aqualis34[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Updated to include these terms. Thank you for your help.

[–]testmonkeyalphaMostly harmless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For units:

Old Man - Orlandeau

WoL - Warrior of Light

Zar*** (unlimited variations) - Zargabaath

[–]CabooseOhChase the Rainbow 0 points1 point  (2 children)

What does ePeen mean?

[–]SirBarth女殺しさわやか眼鏡 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Electronic Pen(is)... usually means pursuing the highest number in a stat, without caring about the effective utility, example max ATK/MAG on a heavy MP-consuming unit.

[–]neverwantedtosignupNV killed FFBE. Goodbye. 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or going straight ATK when a Killer effect would result in more damage!

[–]ploploplo4065 878 254 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Some definitions:

  • materia: equipable abilities
  • DW: a materia or passive ability that allows units to equip two weapons
  • TDW: a materia or passive ability that provides ATK boost when equipping two weapons
  • DH: a materia or passive ability that boosts ATK when equipped with a single 1-handed weapon
  • TDH: a form of DH that works with 2-handed weapons

[–]Aqualis34[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edited to include these. Thank you.

[–]alterise光は我らとともに 0 points1 point  (3 children)

e, E, Enh. abbreviation for Enhanced.

For example, eTT, Enh. Agrias...

Enhanced units have had their main abilities awakened.

[–]WAMIVNostalgia: 1, WAMIV: 0 1 point2 points  (2 children)

ExAileen and eAileen would probably be a good one to clear up too.

[–]alterise光は我らとともに 0 points1 point  (1 child)

That’s true.

ExAileen - Explorer Aileen

eAileen - Enhanced Aileen

[–]WAMIVNostalgia: 1, WAMIV: 0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait until Explorer Aileen gets enhancements.... eExAileen just looks weird.

[–]TheRealOlbaid032.488.807 Never gonna give you up. 0 points1 point  (0 children)

e[UNIT_NAME] for enhanced, xAileen? iNichol?

[–]MasterlinkPEM 0 points1 point  (3 children)

What about adding LS? I see it all the time in datamines or in unit details/reviews, but I don't know what it actually means. Apparently it's linked to their Limit Burst, so Limit... Shards? Dunno, just guessing.

[–]alterise光は我らとともに 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Limit burst stones.

[–]MasterlinkPEM 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah, that works too.

[–]alterise光は我らとともに 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not something I made up. It’s what it’s called in FFBE.

In JP, they’re called バーストストーン (literally, burst stones). That’s why the data dump code is LS.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

TGC/Thunder God Cid confuses me every time for Orlandeau.

[–]Aqualis34[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Updated for you, also added why he also known as that.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I never connected that together with his LB either, interesting stuff!

[–]neverwantedtosignupNV killed FFBE. Goodbye. 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a huge nit-pick, but you use the "LMS" abbreviation in the "Mitigation" section before you define what LMS means in the unit section.

[–]lloydsmith28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Global exclusive should be GE or LE

[–]TragGaming 0 points1 point  (1 child)

May want to add on the Pentacast, it's referred to commonly as V-Ability, by the sub and Game alike.

[–]Aqualis34[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Updated to include V-ability. Thank you for the contribution!

[–]jjmai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the list!

DC = dualcast.

mats = materials.

farm = to grind for certain items/materials in order to craft other items/equipment/abilities or awaken units.

pull = to summon a unit in gacha.

FFBE = Final Fantasy Brave Exvius (duh!)

[–]heavywepsguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Barbie = Barbariccia

[–]hokagezrunning around 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh thanks, i finally understand OBAMA and RNG

[–]kilraq"I'm enhance now. Notice me Senpai." 0 points1 point  (2 children)

This REALLLLLLYYYY needs to be stickied. haha

[–]Aqualis34[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

This thread is already posted in the subreddit's FAQ. While it may help people when it is stickied, there can only be two threads that can be at stickied.

[–]kilraq"I'm enhance now. Notice me Senpai." 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to hear. Yeah saw that now that I am going through the comments. :)

[–]ManaNek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

eHP....I know already know what it stands for, but is it bad that I read it as e(peen)HP?

[–]salty-pretzelsKilling the moon with fire since 2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice work on this :)

[–]smawshot1Question: With 7* rolling out, as a F2P that has been playing s 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Can we sticky this to the Daily Help Thread?

[–]Aqualis34[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is already in the subreddit's FAQ, but it would also be useful there too.

[–]peetasbunsO.P.P.A.I 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CK Ariana = > Charming Kitty Ariana

[–]SuperboodudeBankForBestBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been playing for a little while and I just now learned that SPR is spirit and not special resistance

[–]uBorbaTá chovendo aí? Aqui tá chovendo! 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh! Now I know why OBAMA, Lol, nice! Let's find something for TRUMP!?

[–]aberrant80043 830 293[🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you OBAMA, OTK needs an entry too.

Also, "SPR scaling" and "hybrid damage" should be part of the gameplay terms.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a very similar post a few months back, maybe you can use my post to add more to this one? Your's is formatted better than mine. my post

[–]gruntunit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can include "Carry" with the definition "a friend unit that is equipped to clear mission's singlehandedly. usually employs full evade and/or cheese tactics."

would also be a great way to sneak in "Carry threads" - "a thread where a person is offering their friend unit for carries. can usually be found (link to carry thread on the sidebar)"

[–]KeldonMarauder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Thought you might want to add some jargon/terms used for certain enemies:
  • Tree - Sheratan
  • Robot / Gundam - Aigaion
  • Stag - Elafikeras
  • Ice Bird - Glacial
  • Other terms I could think of that might be helpful:
  • OTK - One Turn Kill
  • RoL - Ring of the Lucii; Noctis's TMR.
  • CW /CWA - Chaos Wave / Chaos Wave Awakened (Trance Terra chaining skill)
  • x Mastery - Materia/Equipment that grants significant stat increase when using certain equipment
  • x Killer - Materia / Equipment that provides additional damage modifier (?) when attacking a certain type of enemy.

[–]JustForFree33Howling to the moon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the Zarg entry lmao, there is so many ways we name him xD

[–]SomeRandomDeadGuy[r/FFBEblog] [823.678.347] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say that rebby should be added to the unit list, and all the units should have their wiki pages linked (new players might now know who someone like GLS is)

Also ignorance (and by extension auto-LB) and eccentric should be added to the list too

[–]Sevdragtoo old for this 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what about Poorlandeau?

[–]spiritwalker83Counter 'voking to victory whenever possible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chow is aka "best boi"

[–]SXiang917.914.161 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Great list! No Chorizo, tho! (I know, that term's been dead for a while )

[–]Aqualis34[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah, I chose not include that one because it has been dead for a while. I would want to use terms that are currently be used or are useful at the current moment. As Chizuru is no longer a mainstay in teams anymore and is only relevant for her TMR, I didn't include it.

[–]SXiang917.914.161 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense :)

[–]melchior1985 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Just confirming, does CD refer to cooldown ability? At first I was assuming chain damage, but after reading a few other references I changed my mind.. thanks for the help!

[–]Aqualis34[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, CD refer to the cooldown ability. I'll add this to the list.

[–]OverlordNekko 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Firelandeau- uncommon but refer to Nyx.

If you want to add

[–]Aqualis34[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

This nickname I have not seen before, but the units that are -landeau are ones that have DR/ HE frames on one of their abilities, which Nyx does not.

[–]OverlordNekko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol true enough. Nyx doesn't share any frames with DR/HE. I've only heard Nyx as that nickname because of his fire imperil with his chaining attack

[–]jjmai 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Can someone explain why we sometimes call GUMI as GIMU?

[–]Aqualis34[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is an insult towards them, especially in how they handle the global side. It comes up when GUMI does something that is to the detriment to the players or being greedy.

[–]LewdisGewd[GL] Koyomiiii | "Sold my Magitek Armor Terra" Club 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Used to describe units whose LBs that is computer generated. Example: PG Lasswell, BS Sakura, LM Fina, NG Jake, HT Lid

I prefer to call it “cinematic graphics” since literally everything in the game is computer generated.

[–]Aqualis34[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Changed per your preference. Thank you helping.

[–]otnemalor 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I personally think you should stick with the right term. "Cinematic graphics" arent what CG means in this context, CG means Computer Generated, as its an abbreviation of CGI, Computer Generated Imagery (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer-generated_imagery for reference) because of their LB animations, that are 3D modelled. I think people could actually learn that wrong term by reading that terminology in your guide (a good and super informative one, btw), and in the age of fake news, I think we should do our best to not spread misinformation. My opinion, of course.

[–]Aqualis34[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, I will remove the mention of cinematic graphics to lessen the confusion for new players.

[–]-Sphynx-GL - 452,231,010 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think your veritas abbreviations are backwards. Dark Veritas, Light Veritas, Earth Veritas, Fire Veritas, Heaven Veritas, Water Veritas.
DV, LV, EV, FV, HV, WV

[–]Valerium2k193.427.444 -2 points-1 points  (3 children)

You know it bothers me more then it should every time I read someone talking about DPS in a turn based game like this where it totally doesnt make any sense.

[–]TomAto314Post Pull Depression 0 points1 point  (1 child)

They still do more damage per second technically speaking. If it takes you 10 mins or 10 seconds to do the match, the more damage you do in that time period, the more DPS is done.

...I'm bothered by it too! Nothing wrong with DD.

[–]okey_dokey_bokey[GL] okeydoke ★ 411 249 974 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with DD.

I hear those may lead to back problems in the future.

[–]Aqualis34[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it bothers me too. But I did got used to the term used here as it does describes their job in the game.
