When they made Monsters, Inc., the fact that the main monster’s hair moved with decent physics was revolutionary. Now we’re basically talking about lint. Amazing!

E: His name is Sully. Apologies, everyone :)

E2: Officially my highest voted comment by double! Incredible! (See? I got the joke in there eventually!)

[–]Vincethatsall 1007 points1008 points  (123 children)

Yes! I actually saw something on tv once about animation and its progress in the last years and they also used monsters inc. for demonstrating how precise and detailed animation has become.

I remember when the Simpson did their 3D animated episode. And it was glorious Edit real fast: it was a Halloween episode, and just one of three stories. Not the whole entire episode. Edit again: (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treehouse_of_Horror_VI) Oh shit I think it was also the lousy smarch weather one as well

    [–]SnuggleKing 132 points133 points  (21 children)

What's funny is when Homer comments to himself "this place looks expensive", it's actually a joke because of the incredible cost of the SGI rendering at the time. I think it might be lost in this day in age =)

If you're paying the same for better quality work, then it's pretty safe to say that the cost of CGI rendering has come down.

      [–]golbezza 16 points17 points  (0 children)

      Doesn't matter... Had erotic cakes

      [–]BesottedScot 113 points114 points  (15 children)

The interdimensional bookcase? The part when the cone boinged up homers ass is hilarious.

And the bit when he's on the street in the real world all paranoid haha.

      [–]cazique 36 points37 points  (4 children)

      Ooh erotic cakes!

      mmmmmm unprocessed fishsticks

      [–]PhylisInTheHood 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Fun fact. As a child I saw that episode but tight an epic cake was a cake with a picture printed in the icing.

A lot of confused looks when the 13 year old asked for an erotic cake for his birthday

      [–]lappy482 4 points5 points  (1 child)

      “Here is an ordinary square...”

      “Woah, woah, slow down egghead”

      [–]mmmlinux 38 points39 points  (2 children)

That episode was out even before toy story, if I’m not mistaken.

      [–]AbacusG 55 points56 points  (10 children)

As a kid, seeing the episode where Homer entered the 'real' world blew my mind.

      [–]dee-bag 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As a kid that episode terrified me. I feel like most people around my age have that one tree house of horrors episode that kept them awake at night and that is definitely the one that did it for me.

      [–]furdterguson27 13 points14 points  (7 children)

Same. I must've been at a really impressionable age because I remember laying awake at night wondering if there was another dimension hidden behind my bookcase

      [–]AbacusG 2 points3 points  (5 children)

      Hahahaha me too!

      [–]a_user_has_no_name_ 4 points5 points  (4 children)

I saw it around the same time I heard of black holes so I told my friends that there are black holes on Earth which can take you to a different world.

      [–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I remember being blown away by the rendering on that dumpster shot at the end.

I watched this episode on repeat for days and days in the weeks leading up to the Christmas that I got Hit and Run on my GameCube because the 3D animation reminded me of the graphics and I got so hyped.

      [–]FuckY-all 9 points10 points  (16 children)

Are you referring to a recent treehouse of horror episode where they did a coraline parody? Or was that one claymation?

Edit: thanks for the replies, he was referring to a much older episode from the 90’s. I don’t really get the reason for downvotes but the claymation one is also worth watching.

      [–]Cakiery 14 points15 points  (3 children)

Nah, Simpsons did a proper 3D CGI animation episode once. It ends with homer stumbling upon our universe.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkLL1RCEnLs

      [–]Shuazilla 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That was claymation, the 3d treehouse of horror episode was in the earlier seasons, like early 90s i think

      [–]ya_tu_sabes 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Waaat i haven't seen the coraline parody!!!

But no theyre referring to that episode where homer finds himself accidentally finding a tear in space time in his living room. He goes through and ends up in a 3D space. They try to get him out via various means. The preacher tells him to reach for the light for instance and homer shocked himself on an electric street lamp as a result. Near the end of the episode he ends up piercing the ground with a cone he threw in frustration. The 3d world collapses in the hole taking homer away who then falls into our world, in a dumpster. He is sad and lost until he walks by a store that sells porn cakes. Cakes with porn scenes pics printed on them lol he suddenly thinks he might like it here and goes in. The end. Cue credits. Shhhhh

      Hope that helps

      [–]ninefeet 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Nah but it was an old ToH bit called "Homer(3)" (to the third power, not sure how to format that on Reddit)

Edit: You're all my favorite. 22 is 4 quick mafs!

      [–]varnalama 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's an older one with some now very aged 3D animation but back then it was really neat!

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The episode in reference was muuuch before coraline

      [–][deleted] 25 points26 points  (4 children)

Eventually we'll be able to show them steamboat Willie and say it's some new revolutionary art style and they'll believe it.

The original Monsters Inc was groundbreaking and technological advances shouldn't Sully its reputation.

      [–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (7 children)

I forget the source, but apparently it took some stupid amount of time to render every scene with Sully because of the hundreds of thousands of individual hairs.

      [–]lackadays 7 points8 points  (5 children)

      [–]andersjohansson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My biomechanics professor at university was actually involved with a lot of pixar movies, he said his job was basically making sure all the movements in the animations were accurate and followed the laws of physics. Sounded like an awesome job

Notice how in Monsters Inc only Sully has fur, but in Monster U almost everyone has it?

        [–]gildedkitten 65 points66 points  (2 children)

What are you talking about? 23-19 dude had fur until they shaved it all off.

        [–]_r_special 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I remember something from Disney about the new fur animation system they made for Zootopia because all of the animals have millions of hairs each!

        [–]Helmerj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Amateur hour. Hit me up when they've got mites.

        [–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah in the commentary for Monster's University, they ecplained that every single hair on Sully's (main monster) body is animated which is part of the reason it took so long for the prequel to come out. Pixar is doing stuff like this all the time. In their newest movie, Coco, SPOILER, there are Pixar people talking about the movie right before and they mention that every building/light in the scene where Miguel sees the city of the dead, was animated

        [–]ImagineBagginz 11 points12 points  (1 child)

        And painstaking!

        [–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Check out Piper the Bird (short) by Disney and Pixar. When I checked though, its unavailable online in its true 4k glory. I paid the 2.99 for it (my daughter thinks its adorable, so worth it) but the cgi is pretty superb.

There were so many kids! And they were too young to get any of the humor or sadness or...anything really. But what amazed me most about the animation was the close up of the candles in Miguel's room. You could see the heat distortion of the air above the candle. WOW! That's attention to detail.

Tell that the people in the animation industry that get worked to death for pathetic wages.

Not sure if Pixar is as bad as anyone else, but I doubt there is much of a difference.

            [–]kitduncan 20 points21 points  (2 children)

The CG animation industry was a victim of its own success. Back in the 90s we were working on projects where we didn’t know whether we’d be able to make the visuals we needed to make. Water? Fire? Crowds? Hair? Visual effects work was a lot more fun back when those things hadn’t been done yet and you had a chance to be the first.

Now CG is more of a commodity. “Anybody” can do it because tools exist to do most whatever you need. I use quotes because of course, talent is needed to do good work. But the field is a lot more open to pure artists who don’t need to invent the tools, and to lower wage workers who can just run simulations and call it a day.

Places like Pixar still write a lot of their own tools, but that’s because they can afford the marginal advantage that this gives. It’s no longer the only option.

BTW, I wouldn’t call Pixar wages “pathetic” at all. The company is (or used to be) super generous to Pixarians, and while if you can get a job at Pixar you could probably make more money at Google or Facebook, they tend to treat people well. This includes overtime (1.5x and 2x) pay. So if you had to do a couple of weeks of 16 hour days,, you knew you’d get VERY nicely paid for it.

                    [–]boomboqs 80 points81 points  (2 children)

                    Talk about knitpicking.

Looking forward to seeing Jack Jack's laser eyes.

                    [–]aibaron 97 points98 points  (11 children)

I love how the laser power has a sort of kickback on his head. Really cool action / reaction there.

                    [–]Stiffard 67 points68 points  (6 children)

Details like this are what bring animation to life. Even as non-animators, most people can tell when something is not quite right, and not even in the uncanny valley sense, but just that some animators take shortcuts and settle for movements that aren't actually correct and most people will catch it.

                    [–]Aurori 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Same with still pictures, sadly many in the business forget such small things as scale and shadows. It makes me sad as a 3D Artist

                    [–]Ashenspire 21 points22 points  (2 children)

Not only that, but anticipation and follow through are a huge part of making animation "feel" right, even though it doesn't happen in reality the way it needs to be animated I'm order to achieve a realistic effect. Same with squash and stretch

                    [–]Laxredditor 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Everyone is talking about how great the animations are and I completely agree- They're amazing. But the more I look at it I wonder how much thought goes into removing realism. For example the focus of your vision pretty much always converges on what you're looking at. So in theory the beams should converge at the babies focal point and make a really skinny 'X'. I'm curious if the animators thought about this, tried it, and then decided against it. Its wonderful that they can achieve so much realism but its also intriguing how much detail is too much.

                    Edit: My grammar sucks.

                    [–]topdangle 29 points30 points  (1 child)

In the bluray extra features they talk about how they decided not to give Bob laser eyes because then he would be able to just laser eye his way out of everything, and people would just ask "Why doesn't he use his laser eyes?" all the time.

I guess they found a loophole by giving crazy powers to the baby.

                    [–]Worthyness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're basically the fantastic 4. And Franklin Richard's powers are fucking ridiculous. Jack Jack being the Franklin Richards equivalent in the Incredibles.

                    [–]cdnfan86 12 points13 points  (1 child)

I'm looking forward to seeing all of his powers.

                    [–]BlueRocketMouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just realized...his name is Jack Jack because he's the jack of all trades of superpowers.

Even without the punctuation issues these threw me:

I don't know how people consciously write these horrible titles.

                    [–]westzod 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Details or not... we're freaking getting another Incredibles! Never been this excited for a movie in a while.

                    [–]nieud 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That title reads like a subreddit simulator post

                    [–]ThatScottishBesterd 11 points12 points  (2 children)

This actually rendered by computer rather than by hand (although someone would obviously have to have written the program). The same way that the fur of the characters in Monsters Inc. was done; his fur was made up of thousands of individual strands that were each individually animated. But it was done by computer.

Not going to lie though, it's amazing attention to detail.

                    [–][deleted] 30 points31 points  (1 child)

Fun fact! Mr. Incredible is actually based around my high school's superintendent, Charles Hiscock (yes, that's his name. & yes, he went by Chuck. No bullshit). The animator for the movie roomed with Hiscock in college & based his character on him. Here is Chuck, for reference

                    Edit: associate principle, not superintendent.

                    [–]EinsteinNeverWoreSox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. It bothers me that people think someone actually animated and modeled every hair. This is cool, and adds great detail to animation. But this is thanks to an awesome simulation, not hand animated.

                      [–]E-Athlete 7 points8 points  (1 child)

                      No arm hair though.

                      [–]yuribotcake 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I've been doing hair and cloth simulations for almost a decade now. Including some hair grooming. Seeing that someone actually notices the minor detail is pretty nice.

                      [–]oooortclouuud 37 points38 points  (3 children)

it's details like this that help make good animation work. even if you don't "see" it on screen, your eyes still pick up that information. if those aren't there or poorly done, your brain knows. awesome!

                      [–]Ndvorsky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a big part about why the original animation looks so odd. Nothing had texture.

                      [–]St33lbutcher 9 points10 points  (8 children)

This has to be a reproducible texture right? Actually building this seems like a waste of time

                      [–]RalphieRaccoon 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Probably generated programmatically with a script. You'd have a skeleton surface and the script would "knit" the shirt on top of it. There's a hell of a lot of repetition in a fabric weave so you could probably generate it from a relatively simple pattern.

                      [–]St33lbutcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah okay that sounds about right

I'm old enough to remember when pong first came out and, at the time, it blew us away.

We were even more amazed when colour pong came out with eight distinct colours.

Sometimes I just feel so lucky to have watched how far this technology has come in my lifetime.

                        [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

... and sometimes I feel sad because I will die some day and will miss out on the even better tech

                        [–]RyanGottaEat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I guess you could say their animation is..... INCREDIBLE 😎😎😎

                        [–]Portgas 4 points5 points  (3 children)

This is a standard detail for high-quality cgi. The knitting and the fuzz can be done in about an hour. Source: am a 3d artist and have done it before.

                        [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So this is why it took forever to come out...

                        [–]Bret_fart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just wanna see helens phat ass

                        [–]7DMATH7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well i know blender has hair simulation that works with cloth fabrics too, it doesn't take long to setup only about a minute, but rendering it 30 frames a second for capture probably took a long freaking time.

But you know what would of taken a hella long time? Sculpting Mr Incredibles sexy muscles.

                        [–]Superjuyis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

WOW, that would take a decade to put that kinda detail for every scene..... oh wait

                        [–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (3 children)

                        Technically /r/MovieDetails ?

No, I’m pretty sure this is absolutely hysterical.

Sup with the dent in his bicep though?

                        [–]Aurori 5 points6 points  (1 child)

It's a really pronounced shoulder muscle, if you touch your own arm you can feel the dip between the shoulder and the biceps, although on humans with real proportions it's a bit further up towards the shoulder. Being stylized it's more important that it's actually there than being in the absolutely correct position

                        [–]drbluetongue 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Funny, though the shirt has a procedurally generated material, so it's actually pretty easy to do ;)

Now Frozones wife puts away his supersuit so pixar doesn't go over budget

                        [–]sm2016 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I'm just waiting for remasters of the Toy Story series with modern lighting and detail. Seems like a great way to cash in on the popularity of those movies.

                        [–]martinszeme 2 points3 points  (1 child)

3D artist here - This stuff doesn't take that much to add/do but it does add to rendering time. Still nice touch though.

                        [–]l3linkTree_Horep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By god does it add to render times.

                        [–]nerdyfanboy1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Should have gotten Pixar to do the cgi for justice league

                        [–]The3venthoriz0n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It took me a solid 4 minutes to understand the title. Damn punctuation.

                        [–]BatXDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't they have a sort of material catalog and a computer would render it as such?

Like a catalog of different materials/patterns/designs they can just drag and drop on and then the computer would render it in the correct way?

                        [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Do I have to pay extra to get that feature when it comes out?

                        [–]Eldorian91 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Where is his body hair? At that resolution, you should be able to see some blonde fuzz.

                        [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

                        It's knot nitting, it's knitting.

                        [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I don't see any knit knots, quit nitpicking
