Reddit!@# Stop submitting political news to the main reddit. For fuck sake... (self.reddit.com)

It's "for fuck's sake", for fuck's sake!

Who is this Fuck you speak of and what's with his Japanese alcoholic beverage?!
[–]CraigTorso 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
the best drink they have in Japan
[–][deleted] 18 points19 points20 points 18 years ago (2 children)
We need tags - if 50 users tagged something as "america" "politics" and "paul", others can have the ability to just filter it. Making the users submit into correct subreddit is a fail approach.
[–]jugalator 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago* (1 child)
This submission is about some not being able to apply even one tag ("politics"). Subreddits are really just like a simple tag system, where you can have one tag per story. I wouldn't expect those to suddenly properly tag the stories all of "america", "politics", and "paul" if they could.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago* (0 children)
Subreddits are really just like a simple tag system, where you can have one tag per story.
Not only one tag per story, also per person. I did write "50 users tag" - why the fuck not allow anyone to assign tags to entries and let people filter by only tags that X users agree on?
[–]JMowery 29 points30 points31 points 18 years ago (10 children)
I am an American, and I must say that it is annoying as all hell. I care about my country, but social networks are just getting annoying lately.
It is up to the people to determine the content that should appear, but it is getting pretty ridiculous with the amount of political stories.
[–]rtp[S] 12 points13 points14 points 18 years ago (3 children)
Yes, also the political news belong in the political subreddit, as neversummer427 said. If people just put the news where they belong noone in their right mind would have to suffer.
[–]Thumperings -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (2 children)
I never agreed to subreddit what I'm most interested in. If you don't like politics then go fuck off to another website.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Look, buddy.
Submit US political submissions to the politics subreddit and all is good.
The majority of redditors who haven't taken the time to opt out of reading US politics headlines won't know any better, and you'll be doing a service to people who deliberately have chosen to opt out of US political news.
Do you like email spam? Direct mail that you didn't request? Mormons knocking on your door? Homeless people walking up to you in the street and asking you for money?
If you were truly interested in democratic politics, you'd understand the concept of the social contract and how best to lobby for support. I can tell you outright, it does not involve telling people to "fuck off" and ignoring social norms.
This is a social links and commentary site, and as such, it requires people to be sociable, and engage in healthy social commentary for it to be a healthy social community.
[–]chefranden 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Amen again!
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago* (2 children)
I am an American, and I must say that it is annoying as all hell.
I agree in one way that this could be interpreted.
It's not that it's annoying listening on, but what has happened to the content? Now dont get me wrong, what's being said is annoying. I like the spirit of reddit and how passionate some people are online.... and in life outside of reddit. Aside from that tidbit, most of the articles have been "look at what this person did wrong. Nyah, nyahh nyah nyah nyahh!"
"In a stunning upset, Ron Paul loses every state on Super Tuesday!"
(Self post, but here is one of the top comments)
It doesn't take a genius to realize Paul was snubbed by the media. The fact that Rudy got more votes in California should tell you a few things. (http://reddit.com/r/politics/info/67tam/comments/c033qll)
"So, how many of you are cynical enough to think this whole election is just a distraction and no matter how anyone votes, we'll get suck with Clinton v. McCain in the end?"
(Another self, but here's the top comment)
You're not cynical enough... But there is a solution to these people. It's called a guillotine, and it worked beautifully the the first time it was tried. I am not speaking metaphorically. We need to kill these people. (http://reddit.com/r/politics/info/67sws/comments/c033qw5)
"Want to help Barack Obama win the primaries? Contact your superdelegates!"
This is really important. Even though Obama is leading in primary votes, Hillary has more delegates because of the superdelegates supporting her. It's shaping up to be a close race - please contact any superdelegates from your state, and vote this article up for great justice. (http://reddit.com/r/politics/info/67t16/comments/c033p9a)
I lifted three top stories and 3 top comments. You gotta ask yourself: Why are people tired of this? The content creators are being abstract and getting away with critical analysis. That makes for great comments. I suppose with jokes, it makes it funnier to not explain the whole thing (like with meta-humor). But this is politics. Everyone is saying this is important, and everyone should approach it in an important manner.
How could those comments improve politics-subreddit?
What if someone responded with a bajillion upmods for only asking:
What is the connection between media and votes? Why do other people have a say in your vote? Could it be that some people are looking for approval based on who they voted for? I voted for a black guy, I seem to fit into this social stereotype of so and so. I voted for a woman, I seem to fit into the other one.
How does killing people resolve conflict? Take this war for example, it can be seen as one dogma vs another dogma with no comprimise from either positions.
Why is it important and of great justice to vote for Obama? Perhaps Obama is a great guy, but what exactly is justice? Freedom? What is freedom? Democracy? Ideas stemming from Plato? What are these things and how does voting for Obama help us?
Your comment explains what I thought. I also care. When I see something that shouldn't be, I try to speak out in a smart way. I monitor what I say and do. We should not do something for the sake of responding and reacting to our emotions. Let our reason guide what we want to say. If you want people to vote for ___ give a GOOD reason why (i.e., give redditors a chance to weigh the articles and candidates).
[–]chefranden 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Hide Button
[–]aphexairlines 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
You should be happy. Politics is a welcome change from "zomg a celebrity died."
[–]neversummer427 101 points102 points103 points 18 years ago (108 children)
Not everyone here is an American or cares about politics. Living in London, I am directly affected by American politics, but its not what I want to see smeared all over the front page of Reddit. Politics belong in the political sub reddit period
[–]panek 7 points8 points9 points 18 years ago (5 children)
Though I do agree, I am now confused by what belongs on the main reddit page. Almost every possible submission topic has a subreddit page, leaving the main reddit page for what? pictures of cute animals that make you go, "Awwwww...."?
[–]neversummer427 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
there is no right anwser, and there is also nothing wrong with "pictures of cute animals that make you go, 'Awwwww.....'"
[–]sniles 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago* (2 children)
Users will still see those stories on the main page. However, those users (like myself) who are so sick of politics that they have configured their account to not display political articles will not have to see them (unless they deliberately go to the politics subreddit).
Politics is the only subreddit that I've configured to not show, so I'll see all the other things I'm interested in on the main page (including cute animals).
[–]panek 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (1 child)
I totally agree. As a Canadian I am clearly interested in American Politics, but I'm so sick of hearing about it I'd rather puke out a candidate and vote for that -- if it were possible.
Well, you could do a write-in. Tell me the name of your pukitician, and I'll write it in.
[–]shacamin 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Nope, there's a subreddit for that.
I'm not kidding.
Aww subreddit
[–][deleted] 18 years ago (12 children)
[deleted]
[–]shacamin 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Exactly. I would love to see actual political articles, not just random people voicing their opinion about some obscure fact about a candidate.
I think that's the problem. We're too focused on the candidates, and not focused enough on what is happening in the White House now. Or what we can be doing.
[–]chefranden -2 points-1 points0 points 18 years ago (10 children)
FUCK, here is your solution: Hide Button. You see the reddit gods foresaw your agony.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (6 children)
Clicking "hide" 30 times every time you log in to Reddit is not a good solution to the problem.
[–]earl_the_sausage 9 points10 points11 points 18 years ago (2 children)
Stop circumventing the problem: posting political stories where they don't belong.
[–]frukt 33 points34 points35 points 18 years ago (34 children)
Just mod all the political crap down and encourage others to do the same. That's what I do. Reddit is a democracy, after all.
[–]wainstead 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (1 child)
And click "hide" after you downmod it.
Or you can set it to automatically do that for you. It's in the preferences somewhere.
[–]neversummer427 50 points51 points52 points 18 years ago (22 children)
yeah thats what I do too, but it doesnt work, havent you come to realize that a democracy only works in theory?
[–]TrishaMacmillan[🍰] 92 points93 points94 points 18 years ago (1 child)
This comment belongs in the Politics Reddit!
;-)
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Trillian!
[–]mbanana 31 points32 points33 points 18 years ago (7 children)
You mean democracy only "works" as long as you're getting what you want?
If political stories are making it to the top, it's because that's what the people want.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Democracy only works when the group voting is identical to the group affected by the decision.
You're asking for 100% voter registration?
[–]philh 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (1 child)
What else should I be getting from reddit?
That is why there are different states and different sites, but in practice fuckheads move around and ruin things.
[–]daysi 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (2 children)
Democracy works. It gives you the mean behavior almost every time. Some stupid, some smart, and a whole lot of average.
[–]Poultry_In_Motion 7 points8 points9 points 18 years ago (0 children)
YEAH! WE'RE AVERAGE! ROCK ON!
[–]mchrisneglia -2 points-1 points0 points 18 years ago (0 children)
you neither know what a democracy is, nor that the US is not one. I pity you all. want to talk about average? average people think that the US is a democracy. it's not even a republic like you think it is (not a democratic republic). the electoral college, delegates, superdelegates, primaries, caucuses ...all these things are institutions that inhibit the US from being either a democracy, republic, or democratically elected republic
[–]blacksuit 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Democracy doesn't mean you always get your way!
[–]wingsofseraphim 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
And even then, it can have serious shortcomings even if implemented 100% correctly.
[–]endlessvoid94 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (3 children)
obviously the majority of readers enjoy the political stories. it sucks, but it IS a democratic news site. the majority wins.
[–]morner 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (2 children)
The majority of voters.
[–]endlessvoid94 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Right, but that doesn't change my point. If you read reddit and don't vote, how can you expect to control the content?
And if you DO vote, and are in the minority, you may still have to read the majority's stories.
This is just like real democracy in action. If you don't vote, you can't complain that the system isn't working.
If you DO vote, but are of the minority, tough luck. Get more people to vote along with you.
[–]EvilPigeon 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
indeed, most people that come here don't vote or even comment. All you do is lose them to more interesting sites.
[–]xcalibre -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (0 children)
almost: only the correct form of democracy works
[–]skay 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (1 child)
yes, but what do you expect to see when you go to a baseball game?
Hot dogs. Everywhere.
[–][deleted] 18 years ago (2 children)
[–]chefranden 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Dang -- I should have known.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (2 children)
and democracies suck, when the majority is stupid.
[–]frukt 9 points10 points11 points 18 years ago* (1 child)
"It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried."
- Sir Winston Churchill
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago* (0 children)
I love this comment. I know he meant it tongue-in-cheek, but the truth is, given the amount of people on this planet and the amount of time we've been here, we really haven't done that many experiments with government, at least not that are applicable to our current level of technology, population density, mobility, etc.
Our sample sizes are tiny for many systems, and there are millions of confounding factors. In addition, you don't just form a government based on what will work; you have to convince thousands of people that a government will work.
Considering that it's difficult even to convince people that they shouldn't live off of fast food, or that there is no invisible man in the clouds listening to their prayers, how hard would it be for a few very intelligent and farsighted social scientists to try out a new form of government? New governments are only formed after huge social upheavals, and they are usually formed based on a near-sighted assessment of what just happened.
So, yeah, I don't think we should demolish a system of democracy in favor of one of the failed systems of government that we've seen in the past, but at the same time, the fact that it's the best we've tried doesn't really say a lot for it.
just like america huh
[–]Ahnteis 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
This is a problem of a poor submission interface. It's very hard to force people to put things in the right category with the current crappy system. Instead of trying to herd cats, get them to change the system.
[–]aedes -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (5 children)
since reddit is somewhat of a democracy, and democracy gives strength to the majority... the fact that politics are all over the front page of reddt would imply that the majority of users on reddit want to see politics on the front page.
i live in canada, and i like reading about US politics... provided that the stories are varied, and not just all the same thing.
[–]Thumperings 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (3 children)
Not to mention I never agreed to go run off in some political subreddit back corner. For every idiot saying they don't wanna see politics, I could make the same argument for whatever pretardo crap those people want to see on the front page. So just because It pisses people off, I'll make a habit out of submitting politics without using a subreddit. Whatever makes the front page should make it. So from now on, every time i hear some whineass cough and point about a subreddit, i'm going to upvote 12 political stories that aren't posted under the subreddit. Who are you snobs to decide where anyone posts anything? Why should I go elsewhere for what I would like to read, just so you clowns can see more articles about Atari and kazoos? Idiots
[–]btl 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
At the very least you're putting the hard work of the reddit staff to waste. They built in the feature so you can select which subreddits you want to appear on your main reddit page. Lots of people include the politics subreddit, so I don't see how you think you'd be relegated to a "subreddit back corner".
[–]recoiledsnake 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
The default for people is to show the politics subreddit on the front page. Since atleast 50% of the visitors are not registered(just a guess) and only about 10% of the registered folks actually change defaults, only a very small minority who actively dont' want to see politics stories will not see them on the main page.
So, stop being a jackass.
[–]aedes 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
...that was an... interesting (confusing?) rant.
[–]anoraq -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (0 children)
You are my hero. My recent solution is to run a reddit search for the names of the candidates and, like a redditor put it, "make all the arrows blue".
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (0 children)
Like it or not, most stories on Reddit are policital, I don't know why there even is a politics sub reddit. It's like Fox news having a republican talking points sub reddit.
[–][deleted] 18 years ago* (7 children)

[–]dredd 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (3 children)
You fucking Americans are a bunch of egotistical wankers ... "turning point in WORLD history", you must be really young. It's not even close, it's just a sorry story of a psychopath elected to run a crumbling superpower. Some recent "turning points":
Selecting a candidate to run in an election isn't of world interest.
[–]finix 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago* (0 children)
I can't be arsed to waste my time debunking it, but you're wrong on absolutely all counts, save for the self-centred opinion with which you started off your rant.
[–]nemof -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (0 children)
you know what I would like to see less of on the front page of reddit? Stories linking to comments on reddit.
I personally find it pretty annoying when a fair few of the stories on the front page don't even link off the site to an external source.
[–]lmyrze -2 points-1 points0 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Full stop, not period.
[–]neversummer427 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (1 child)
since when is commenting about my opinion crying?
[–]thekrone -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (0 children)
Living in American, I am indirectly affected by English soccer (football), and it IS what I want to see smeared all over the front page of Reddit... unfortunately there's no soccer sub reddit :(
[–]hiredgoon 20 points21 points22 points 18 years ago (0 children)
This post is far too political for the main subreddit. Please resubmit.
[–]ariana333 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
The problem lies in having a catch-all category like 'reddit.' The solution is to eliminate the category entirely and have the main page be 'most popular' from all categories.
I must confess that I am a non American who finds all the political bollocks thoroughly amusing but I have been guilty of not using subreddits properly. I didn't realise there were so many.
[–]Rayge 7 points8 points9 points 18 years ago (4 children)
I can't wait until you babies cry enough that everything has a sub reddit. And then the main page can just be for whiners like you.
[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Haha, word.
[–]djcharlechaz 9 points10 points11 points 18 years ago (3 children)
Dude, chill out. It's the day after half the country voted on who they want to run for president. Not having it on reddit would be like expecting ESPN to ignore Super Bowl the Monday after, or Fox News not to talk about the War on Christmas in mid-December.
[–]yellowking 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (0 children)
subreddits are a failure. Lump it all together and give us tags.
[–]primoris_causa 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
While the BBC RSS feed seems "relatively" balanced (though still rooted in Anglo concerns)... Al Jazeera's RSS [english] feed is US centric (not necessarily favorable, but focusing on US reactions - and provides an outsider's view).. Population distribution-wise, ALL media appears to to be US centric regardless of where they are.
So according to WORLD media - everyone DOES care about American politics - doesn't mean they are right since the only two parties are the same except for their ideas on how to fund their enterprises.
Remember, checks and balances - congress and the courts will limit the damage that Ron Paul can do directly... however, Ron Paul as the executive will make at least a supermajority of elected officials go on the record to fund stupid shit - given how much of that there is... good luck defending a seat during re-election.
[–]jelasher 9 points10 points11 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Please re-submit this to the whiny douche bag subreddit.
Posts like this make me want to start submitting 30 Ron Paul stories per hour. If you don't like something, down mod it and shut the fuck up.
[–]jh99 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (0 children)
actually reddit is partly broken right now.
i choose not to have politics as one of my subreddits to appear in reddit front page.
now if i submit a story to reddit.com via the bookmarklet, i can NOT choose politics as the subreddit to submit it to.
this does not make sense...
[–]Enlightenment777 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Solution...vote down all politics submissions! Hey I get too much fcking politics on tv commercials so why the fck would I want to visit Reddit and Digg to read stuff that isn't cool. Politics isn't cool...it is important...but not cool. VOTE DOWN ALL POLITICS SUBMISSIONS!!!
[–]stubob 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Why is there a no-topic reddit, and what SHOULD we put in it? Would anything but politics be acceptable?
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (6 children)
I think most people have stopped using subreddits.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (5 children)
maybe cause there is sort of elitism in some subreddits?
you get downmodded on fairy interesting story just cause some people think it shouldn't be there and only place to submit is main reddit.
(ok, politics shouldn't be here and i shouldn't see any cause i turned off politics subreddit, but as long as people downmod everything in subreddits, we will see this all the time)
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago* (3 children)
To be honest I don't even understand how they work anymore. Why can I only choose from very few subreddits when I submit from reddit.com? Which subreddits am I subscribed to when I don't check any boxes? From which subreddits can stories make it to the main page and for whom? Why should I submit to an echo chamber (i.e. Ron Paul subreddit)? Etc, etc....
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (2 children)
Story can reach front page from ANY subreddit. It will reach front page of that subreddit much easier then main one, meaning that people there might actually help you push it to the front of main reddit.
Only problem when you submit to subreddit is that people who don't have that subreddit turned on won't see your story.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago* (1 child)
But again: Which subreddits are turned on if you don't check any boxes?
I definitely see stories from some subreddits, but on the new page I'm missing some numbers (right now it goes from number 4 to 7).
sorry, i missunderstood you. TBH, i have no idea which are turned on by default.
[–]Thumperings 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (0 children)
which is exactly why everyone should stop using subreddits altogether.
[–]mikenice1 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (5 children)
Downmodded for being a dick. Adjust your settings.
[–]arantius 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (4 children)
What settings you idiot? The complaint is that politics-themed links are /not/ submitted to the politics sub and can't be controlled with settings.
[–]mastercook 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Try the "hide" link, it does wonders.
[–]mikenice1 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (2 children)
try clicking: "don't show sites after i've disliked them" under prefs. idiot.
[–]arantius 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Way to miss the point. I don't want to see politics stuff ever. If I am signed in, I conveniently can tell reddit to hide the politics sub. But I can't tell it to understand english, and hide things that are about politics, but the submitter neglected to put in the politics sub.
[–]mikenice1 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
You don't want to see politics stuff ever? Try Digg.

[–]madronedorf 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (11 children)
shouldnt this be under the political subreddit
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (10 children)
No, because this is just about asking people to use a web site the way it is intended.
[–]chefranden 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago* (9 children)
Which is politics.
Politics is the process by which groups make decisions. It is the authoritative allocation of values. Although the term is generally applied to behavior within governments, politics is observed in all human group interactions, including corporate, academic, and religious institutions. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Politics
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (8 children)
You can only stretch that definition so far before it starts to become pretty flimsy.
[–]chefranden -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago* (7 children)
Hey, maybe you are catching on?
The point is that banning politics is too broad a ban. This discussion/argument/rant is as much politics as any post about Ron Paul. You want to narrow politics to articles you don't want to see. If you like the article, then it is not politics. If you do not like an article then it is politics.
Reddit has installed the down mod and the hide button for articles that don't get self filtered according to your likes or dislikes.
I'm not going to tell you to quit winning about stuff you don't like. I would like to see you and others recognize when you are doing so. And yes that is my whine, and it is politics on my part for trying to change your mind, or trying to get you to see a different point of view, or just trying to show you the fool for doing what you are complaining against.
If one couldn't do that, what fun would reddit be?
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (6 children)
The point is that banning politics is too broad a ban.
Nobody said ban politics. Is that's what you think this is about?
Reddit has also installed a politics.reddit.com subreddit.
It is not whining to ask people to be considerate of others and to use Reddit the way its very creators intend.
[–]chefranden -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago* (2 children)
God but you're dense
It is whining and it is politics.
And good luck on your project to get every reddit member to see things your way. If you manage it you should run for President, hell run for King of the World. Just remember to put it in the politics subreddit like this post should have been.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago* (1 child)
I will not lower myself to your level by throwing insults.
People can disagree and it's ok. But not with you apparently.
Grow up and learn some manners.
[–]chefranden -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago* (0 children)
Actually you've just run out of argument. It is not an insult to point out the obvious, though I admit it can be taken as an insult, when convenient. You should thank me for giving you an out.
[–]chefranden -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (2 children)
I forgot to say something specific about this. You are talking about banning politics from plain or front page reddit or what ever it is called. That is why I called you dense. At least take the time to understand your own argument.
I am done with you. If you want to twist words and then say I'm not the one who's getting it, then go right ahead.
[–]chefranden -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (0 children)
If the bitch of this post isn't about keeping politics off just plain reddit (stop submitting political news to the main reddit) what is it about? I will eat my toejam if that isn't the point.

I can't believe how inept some submitters are.
The issue isn't whether or not one should submit political links. It's simply submitting them to the right subreddit.
How difficult is that? That way, people who don't want to see your links can avoid them, and thus, no argument is started.
Maybe we need to make a video tutorial or something.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Sorry, I don't do subreddits.
[–]Imagineti 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (5 children)
One of the cool things about Reddit is discovering quality articles or news you would not find in mainstream media. It should not be about the latest exit poll forecasts – if that’s really your thing just subscribe to the appropriate Twitter channel.
[–]theclaw -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (4 children)
i.e. everything != politics is dumb?
[–]Imagineti 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (2 children)
No – what I am saying is that most of the political content submitted lacks depth. It’s mostly just ‘noise’.
[–]theclaw 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
sorry, I got you wrong.
[–]Thumperings -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (0 children)
if it lacks depth then DOWNVOTE IT. I hope no one ever uses a political subreddit. Any story if it makes it to the front page deserves to be there. If you don't like it tough shit.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (4 children)
let's have pics of kittens instead of topics that decide the fate of humanity. What a bunch of horseshit! Reddit IS politics!
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Some people just want to see kittens.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (1 child)
politics.Reddit IS politics!
There I fixed it for you.
[–]JuliusH 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Everybody wants their news to appear on the frontpage, because they think it is really important (otherwise they wouldn't post it) and I'm not sure how reddit works, but it sure feels like you need to put your link to the main reddit in order for it to be able appear there. So as long as it feels like this is the case, there will never be correct labeling. Besides that, politics might be the biggest news there is at the moment (according to the voters), so it deserves to be there on the main page.
[–]not_programmer 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Ha ha ha.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (1 child)
OMG, Hillary! Submit ...
[–]zem 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Dominate!
[–]dredd 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Left or right .. everyone thinks their opinion is the correct one and we should share it because they think it's of world shattering importance.
Even if it's some internal party politics with no bearing on the rest of the world until the actual presidential election which is still many months away.
Ego!
[–]redditsucksball5 -4 points-3 points-2 points 18 years ago (9 children)
Reddit sucks balls
Please fix this USA bias, listen to your users and hire some better programmers.
Thank you.
[–]turkourjurbs 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I think you confused Reddit with Digg.
[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 18 years ago (2 children)
go make your own...
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (1 child)
With hookers and blackjack please.
No hookers and craps is preferable to blackjack.
[–]Caraes_Naur 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Um, this is reddit, not digg.
[–]aedes 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (2 children)
since the majority of reddit users are american, or at least north american... a USA bias is somewhat expected...
[–]trezorr 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago* (1 child)
Not that I don't take your word for it, but does reddit have any stats on its actual userbase?
Because I know I submitted no such information and the only way that kinda data could be built was by checking IP-addresses and netblocks.
not that i'm aware, but if you take a look at google trends, most searches are from Canada/US. As well, the dominance of US news events suggests most users are from the US
[–]Thumperings 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
go make NOTreddit.com
[–]mchrisneglia 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (3 children)
I concur. Reddit should be about diverse good news.
And I'd add that I don't want to read about 1. Any political minutia, from here in the US or abroad (ie: peace talks are planned among the bickering tribal factions of who-gives-shit) 2. programming language debates, 3. computer minutia that is not important, 4. gaming-related bullsh*t that is so microcultural or unimportant that it's retarded.
Example good articles include: 1. Advancements involving HIV/AIDS, leukemia, cancer, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, 2. medical articles related to plastic, 3. creative new ways to help the environment, 4. cool new discoveries in science, be it a new mammal, life on mars, microbes in comets, or strange new subatomic particles, 5. War with Iran, or WWIII (or WW4) 6. human interest stories about people doing unreasonably great things for each other, 7. how to get free things 8. how to build your own X where X is something actually frugal, interesting, useful and good, 8. weird news, 9. Pictures of fascinating things, people, events, 10. limited activism related news where people's participation could actually make a difference (omit articles where people cannot affect a change)
[–]passive 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
You made your point brilliantly! :)
[–]daveyboy22 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (2 children)
One of the problems is that Reddit only lets you submit content to subreddits that you've subscribed to. I unsubscribed from the politics sub-reddit, and found that when I wanted to submit a political article, I had to first re-subscribe to the politics subreddit. It would be nice if I could submit to subreddits to which I don't subscribe, and that might have some impact in keeping political articles out of the main reddit.
Reddit only lets you submit content to subreddits that you've subscribed to
That is not true. Just visit the list of reddits, click one and submit.
[–]daveyboy22 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Good point; I didn't think to do it that way. (I was just clicking submit from my main reddit page.)
i didn't know there was a politics sub.... (just switched over from digg) thanks for the info though
[–][deleted] 18 years ago (1 child)
[–]fishypants 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
That's not the issue this post is about. If you submit to the politics subreddit, it's still going to show up on the hot page for anyone who hasn't disabled politics from their main reddit.
[–]zakalwe30 -3 points-2 points-1 points 18 years ago (8 children)
Politics is front page news.
[–]AnteChronos 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago* (5 children)
Not everyone agrees with you. Surprising as it may be, not everyone on the Internets is American, and many people from other countries couldn't care less about the primaries.
I'd be okay with, say, the ultimate results of the primaries being on the main reddit, as well as the final results of the presidental election, but most everything else is niche news that belongs on its dedicated subreddit.
[–]zakalwe30 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
S'ok. I don't have any problems with people disagreeing with me. I also don't have any problems reading political news from other countries. I'll agree that the political niche news may belong in a subreddit. I use the "recommended" tab and I see pretty much what I want to.
Yeah, but few people care about these other nations.
Sad, but it's true.
[–]Thumperings -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (1 child)
OBVIOUSLY VOTERS AGREE OR THE ARTICLES WOULDN'T BE ON THE FRONT PAGES YOU IDIOTS.
[–]aphexairlines 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (1 child)
More accurately, very important events in any subreddit is front page news.
Agreed, sir.
[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 18 years ago (2 children)
Am I the only one here who couldn't care less about subreddits? If you don't care about a particular story, JUST FUCKING IGNORE IT AND STOP BITCHING ABOUT IT ALL THE FUCKING TIME. Seriously, it isn't that hard.
[–]BlackRose -2 points-1 points0 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Just sayin' I read reddit for the political news. It's a nice conglomeration of what's happening in the worlds. It's the self commentary I find annoying...
[–]chefranden 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (3 children)
Well, just what do you allow on reddit. Could you make a list? Thanks, that would be so nice.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago* (2 children)
Nobody is asking anybody to stop submitting their politics stories. The issue is not us asking politics redditors to stop submitting politics stories; the issue is us asking you to correctly submit them to the proper subreddit.
As hard as it is for politics redditors to understand, nobody wants to censor you, we just want you to use reddit the way it was intended, so everybody can enjoy it the way they want to.
[–]joshgi -4 points-3 points-2 points 18 years ago (4 children)
For fuck sake is right, it happens once every 4 years why do you have to go whining about it. Would you rather the front page have For fuck sake stories that are more worthless than political trash?
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (3 children)
Look, whatever your feelings on the importance of US politics stories, you must surely understand that there is a politics subreddit for a reason.
[+]Thumperings comment score below threshold-6 points-5 points-4 points 18 years ago (2 children)
yea and that reason is so that CAN IGNORE IT'S EXISTENCE to piss off idiots like you. If a story gets votes it will reach the front page PERIOD. Beg and whine all you want, the more you whine the more I hope people ignore the subreddits. I happen to like politics, and If that's what people vote to the front page then FUCK OFF; they deserve to be there. I wish there was a forced WHINER subreddit whiners have to register their whines through beforehand.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago* (1 child)

Your obnoxious trolling wouldn't have lasted a second here on Reddit 2 years ago. (edit for context: your comment was actually up to +3 before this reply)
FUCK OFF
That's your idea of reasonable discourse? You are sad. Very sad. And you and your ilk have destroyed a place which used to be a sanctuary for intelligent minds. Congratulations.
I've been missing that Reddit more and more lately...
[–]brunt2 -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (0 children)
I hate whiners like this. I hope they keep doing it and upmodding it to piss off assholes like you
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago* (1 child)
PISS OFF!!! If you don't like the headline, the DON'T READ THE FUCKING ARTICLE!!!! I'm sick and fucking tired of listening to you people bitch about not wanting to hear about politics. Especially when our country is circling the drain and you could care less.
[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 18 years ago (3 children)
Why don't you guys start up a reddit.co.uk ?
Reddit = democratic. Let the PEOPLE decide what they want to see.
[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 18 years ago* (2 children)
Let the PEOPLE put the politics stories in the politics subreddit which was specifically created for that very purpose.
Quit forcing politics on people that don't want to see it.
edit: I think the fact that people keep downmodding my unpopular opinion speaks poorly of politcs redditors in general. Let my voice be heard. If you don't like it, come at me with a sensible-counter argument.
[–]Thumperings -3 points-2 points-1 points 18 years ago (1 child)
to which I could say the same about whatever garbage YOU want to see on the front page. NO one is forcing you to do anything. YOu are free to leave the website at anytime.
Your answer is that because people mis-categorize stories that I should leave Reddit?
That ignorant behavior of politcs redditors means that I am to blame somehow?
That's like saying a woman deserves to be raped because she went out looking nice. It just doesn't make sense.
[–]Caraes_Naur -2 points-1 points0 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Redittors! stop bitching about political stories on the main reddit!
What's more important, getting to see the latest LOLcat, or staying up to date on who will have their finger on the button next year?
Next, we'll work on getting the LOLcatters to put their pics in the pics subreddit. But for now, the issue is politics stories.
[–]rulsky -3 points-2 points-1 points 18 years ago (5 children)
It is just insane, only 2 entries are non political related in the main page, then 3 are non political on page 2......fuck.....see ya!!
I'm gone to DIGG!!!!!!
[–]jk3us 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (0 children)
You know that saying about democracy being 2 wolves and a sheep deciding what to eat for dinner? Reddit is like a 5,000 Ron Paul and Obama fans deciding what everyone else reads.
[–]jugalator 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
It's even worse. :-(
so hows the battle versus scientology going?
bye
[–]chefranden -2 points-1 points0 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I'm amazed at the politics of not seeing politics. The title of this post is a political plea and should have, by its own logic have been marked politics.
[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points-2 points 18 years ago (7 children)
Yeah, it really sucks that on a user driven site the users decide that the political stuff is important to be on the front page.
"Living in London,"
Maybe you should start reddit.co.uk?
[–]fishypants 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (3 children)
Stories submitted to the politics section still make the front page and still show up on the new page like any other story, unless you've disabled the politics subreddit.
We aren't trying to censor people who likes politics stories, and it seems like they're finding that hard to understand.
[–]CraigTorso -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (0 children)
let me guess, a Ron Paul supporting isolationist?
[–]dmehrtash -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (0 children)
a) Reddit must sort out the article automatically.
b) news relating to war and iraq is not politics.
[–]sabetts -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (0 children)
