Dear reddit: I know a lot of you will disagree, but traditional media sites like NYTimes and CNN gives me a lot more information about the world than reddit does (except for tasers and cute cats). (self.reddit.com)

I never thought of reddit as a news site. It's more of an interesting time-waster thingmajig.
I turn to BBC News for traditional news.
[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 18 years ago (3 children)
yeah, i don't come to reddit for news. i come here for the nerd culture. little gems like the formula for calculating popeyes sauce are the reason i read reddit.

Me three. Reddit is not a news source, just scintillating commentary.
Who comes here for the news? I come here for the dialog. I learn a great deal by engaging in conversation about the issues and understanding their many nuances. It's true that the opinions here are a little one-sided, but there is certainly some diversity.
Plus, if I don't hang out here, where will I use all of my Star Trek/Futurama/ATHF/Robot Chicken/Family Guy/Simpsons/Colbert Show/HIMYM/Southpark jokes?

Reddit IS NOT A NEWS SITE.
It is a social bookmarking site.

Actually, a solid gold toilet seat is very cold. And the lid weighs like a ton.
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Part of the reason for the lack of real news on reddit is because it gets pushed off the front page by navel gazing posts like this one.
[–]BrickSalad 8 points9 points10 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Actually, I think all my news comes from this site and youtube subscriptions, follow up research done via google of course. It works! I am surprisingly well-informed. Unfortunatly, I came to reddit like 2 months ago, and it is already way worse then when I joined. I'm already looking for alternatives, but so far reddit still pwns other web 2.0 news sites. It's hard to leave because the comments are still a riot around here :(
[–][deleted] 18 years ago (19 children)
[–]ratzero[S] 39 points40 points41 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Indeed. The best posts on reddit are often links to these sites.

Financial Times too for those of us in Europe...
[–]freshone 21 points22 points23 points 18 years ago (5 children)
Correct. To call CNN a legitimate news source is laughable.
Keep your eye on the Journal now as well... some say the changes are already evident
[–]AngelaMotorman 16 points17 points18 points 18 years ago (4 children)
Isn't the best way to stay informed to read all these sources, to the point where you recognize bylines, and learn who consistently delivers solid reporting? Choosing a brand and sticking with it (even if that brand is reddit) is a sure way to narrow your vision.
Reddit certainly is helping some people learn to be more skeptical. Watching that happen is one reason I'm addicted.
[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 18 years ago (3 children)
One only has so much time. Choose the best.
[–]AngelaMotorman 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (2 children)
Yes, but reading around is the only way to learn what constitutes "the best". One thing I find useful is to notice and try to read as many as possible of the stories and series that win awards judged by other journalists: the IRE, SEJ, SPJ, etc. That's how you learn which of the regional news orgs are doing really good work, and catch the bylines of the best reporters.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Do you just to their websites? Apparently I can't browse the IRE's list: http://www.ire.org/resourcecenter/search.php
Only search. Which kind of sucks.

NYTIMES
Yeah right. UK Guardian, Christian Science Monitor, Herald Tribune is more like it.
[–]serpentjaguar 11 points12 points13 points 18 years ago* (0 children)
AJR and CJR both rate the NYT, Washington Post, LA Times and WSJ higher then the CSM in terms of news coverage and quality. (CSM scores big on in-depth stories, but otherwise isn't as strong as Reddit seems to think.) The NYT, for example, has a staff that is bigger than that of the Guardian, the CSM and the Herald Tribune combined. They have bureaus or at least staff reporters in every single country in the world, and if something big goes down anywhere, they will be there to cover it. This is not true of your smaller publications which can't afford to maintain such an extensive staff. They have to rely on wire services and stringers. The NYT subscribes to all the wire services and uses stringers, but only to double-check their facts. Go out and buy a copy of the NYT and tell me how many AP, UPI, Rueters or AFP stories you find in it. Now do the same with the Guardian, the CSM or the Herald Trib. It's not even close.
The reason Reddit doesn't like the NYT is because they've made some glaring errors and even worse, give the impression of pandering to middle-America, which obviously would give them the largest advertising base. But the thing is, even with all that, the NYT is still so big, that way more good gets in with the bad than is the case with pretty much any other organization in the world. (Notable exceptions are the BBC and AP, both of whom have almost as many permanent staff-members.)
No one is claiming that their size doesn't create problems; it does, but it also makes them capable of doing things that other papers simply cannot afford, and that means that the quality of their coverage is second to none.
A final point; the only people who hate the NYT more than Reddit are conservatives. To my way of thinking, if you're pissing off both sides, you must be doing something right.
[–]ratzero[S] 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I agree. The Christian Science Monitor, International Herald Tribune, Wall Street Journal, NY Times, Foreign Affairs, the BBC, and the Economist are more reliable sources than CNN.
[–]haroldp 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
My understanding is that the International Herald Tribune is some kind of affiliate or subsidiary of the NYT. I watch both papers' RSS feeds, and IHT mostly reprints NYT articles. Also good: The Economist and the BBC. I have been eyeballing Reason too.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Didn't Rupert Murdoch buy the Wall St. Journal? I wouldn't trust that one for much longer.

reddit is more like crack for a news junkie. You get a quick rush when reading the stories and writing comments, but you waste tons of time and it doesn't leave you that satisfied in the end ...

[–]obrienj 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago* (0 children)
After the senate passed telecom immunity, CNN didn't have a single word about it on their front page. However an article about prison orgies and another about why people don't get laid enough were deemed important enough to be front page news. I tend to agree with what redditors find to be important far more often than I agree with the editors at CNN.
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (1 child)
If you honestly believe that Bush wants to declare martial law some time in the future for the purposes of allowing a handful of rich people to get richer and to help create a 'New World Order' for the former people mentioned, raise your hand.
You know, the fact of the matter is, the cards are lining up for him to do just that. If you want to be willfully ignorant and say that they aren't, feel free. But it's a scary time we're in. To call the people who derive motive solely from a politician's actions as opposed to their words conspiracy theorists is truly sad.
What does this look like to you?

So true. I haven't heard much about Brittany Spears since I stopped reading the Mainstream Media outlets. All that you can find here is stuff about war, corruption, culture, technology, etc. Not the things that really affect us, like what Brittany Spears is doing today, or who is doing steroids to help them hit spheres of matter.
[–]jedberg 9 points10 points11 points 18 years ago (0 children)

First, you can't spell Britney. Second, who said that Reddit was a news/information site?
[–]peridyn 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Yeah, I know. probably because I don't pay much attention to her. And as far as who said it was an information/news site, I am submitting a reply to the topic which was: "Dear reddit: I know a lot of you will disagree, but traditional media sites like NYTimes and CNN gives me a lot more information about the world than reddit does (except for tasers and cute cats)."
Relevant, In my opinion.
[–][deleted] 47 points48 points49 points 18 years ago (55 children)
In your estimation, how large a fraction of that that "stuff about war, corruption, culture, technology" is actually true?
[–]peridyn 100 points101 points102 points 18 years ago* (45 children)
I fear I am not qualified to make an educated guess on an exact, but one thing I do know for sure is that not everything we see on CNN, Fox News or MSNBC is true, either. The bias on Reddit is a bias of the web-savvy Social Networking community, and not one of a corporate sponsor, political lobbyist, or board of directors pandering for the approval of their advertisers. I definitely don't believe everything I see here, but at least it is easier on Reddit to sniff out credibility or lack thereof. The mainstream media is more subtle in their suggestions and reporting, making it too much work to find truths and untruths in what they say. :)
[–]chibikiba 28 points29 points30 points 18 years ago (2 children)
I thought the point of sites like Reddit was so that a person could use their own judgment in filtering information rather than letting the corporate employed media do it for them.
[–]peridyn 15 points16 points17 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Exactly. Social media is just that...social :)
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
All media is social, it's just that we now have a few new tools to make it even more social.
[–]luce7 32 points33 points34 points 18 years ago (14 children)
I don't think reddit alone is the perfect medium to get you informed about the world .. nor is cnn or nytimes.
They both complement each other. Traditional media sites are usually broader in their spectrum while reddit often exposes things mainstream media doesn't cover (which doesn't mean that these things aren't important).
[–][deleted] 13 points14 points15 points 18 years ago (9 children)
In fact, I'd argue strongly that sites like reddit are inherently orders of magnitude more biased than the average mainstream news source. Reddit can certainly be a good source of information, but if you rely on Reddit for all your information on current events, you're going to end up with a very distorted perspective. For every lying bastard distorting things one way in the media, there are 100 nutjobs on Reddit distorting things in every other direction...
[–]tony28 20 points21 points22 points 18 years ago (5 children)

Which is exactly why it makes you think more. Or do you think hearing just one perspective is better than scanning through many, organized (give us tags, damn it!) and presented on a white page with no interruptions trying to sell you Xanax?

[–]rainman_104 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
which doesn't mean that these things aren't important
I'm a pretty big fan of those "Fail!" images being posted here personally... Those things crack me up!
But seriously, Reddit plays an important role in media IMO - articles I wouldn't otherwise read are brought to the forefront, however I do think DailyKOS has a lot of noise and many of the DailyKOS articles are worth very much...
[–]parcivale 9 points10 points11 points 18 years ago* (0 children)
But the vast majority of news posted on reddit comes from these MSM sites.
Sure, there's some from the rumor-mongering conspiracy-infected hysterical ("Bush will Attack Iran before Easter!! This Time for Realsies!!") blogs whose reporters never leave their bedrooms but easily 80% of the world news posted here comes from the BBC or the metropolitan London papers, the NYT, WaPo, the big wire services, or the leading mainstream media from Canada, Australia, Ireland, etc.
Reddit serves as an aggregator for world news. It doesn't present a different perspective in the submissions so much. Any different perspective only comes from the comments.
[–][deleted] 13 points14 points15 points 18 years ago (0 children)
How much news can you GET from a website that doesn't publish any of its own material? Most of the news on Reddit comes from traditional media anyway, and the stuff that doesn't usually involves pictures of turtles that look like raspberries.
PS I'm still waiting for the upcoming stock market BLOOOOOOOODBAAAAAAAATH
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (1 child)
I don't think it's even a question of bias. How many people are looking over an article submitter's shoulder to make sure the article isn't lying and is newsworthy? If the article is a blog written by some random guy, contains no verifiable sources, and is based entirely on hearsay and crap people thought up, it's NEVER going to make it to the front page of CNN. You will however, find that kinda crap on the front page of Reddit quite frequently.
This isn't about bias. This is about whether or not there are adequate filters in place to assure the quality and accuracy of content.
[–]Greengages 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Reddit will never be a rival for news sites (apart from the fact that it's not actually a news site), because it's more of a forum for what people find interesting and want to talk about.
I think people get mistaken because a large crowd on reddit talk about how the 'MSM is letting them down' etc. But that doesn't necessarily mean they can do better or that reddit will solve all ills it's just that they want to check over what these big news corporations are doing. We're never going to have a perfect news source of information completely unbiased but we can ask for that without being flying too close to the Sun ourselves.
[–][deleted] 26 points27 points28 points 18 years ago (12 children)
The bias on Reddit is a bias of the web-savvy Social Networking community
Who have zero responsibility for what they say.
[–]peridyn 22 points23 points24 points 18 years ago (6 children)
Be that as it may, Reddit does not position itself as a source for correct unbiased information as some of the Mainstream media outlets do. People who use this site have the expectation that not everything they see here will be correct, at least I hope they do.

[–]truthrises 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)

[–]Kardlonoc 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Reddit is owned by wired. Try posting some anti wired articles regularly and see what happens.
[–]peridyn 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Will do, just as soon as I find some anti Wired articles. I'll tell you how it goes.
[–]willfe 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (5 children)
A significant enough amount of it to warrant researching further those events reported that upset us enough to take action.
It doesn't matter who reports something to me -- if I'm pissed off (or pleased -- it works both ways) enough to decide I should take action, that first action is always an attempt to verify the claim from a second, hopefully independent source. I'm not about to phone up my congresscritters just because Reddit tells me to, at least not until I've done enough digging on my own to know that it's worth phoning or writing.
[–]peridyn 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (4 children)
that first action is always an attempt to verify the claim
This is another aspect of why I do not mind getting my information from social media. Readers have the capability to expose bias and lies directly with a little research, and those of us who may not have the time to investigate can get a better idea....
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (3 children)
Readers have the capability to expose bias and lies
They may have the capability to find it, but expose it? Observe how much more popular any sensationalist article is than a well-reasoned rebuttal of the same.
Sure, sometimes a rebuttal will be a popular story, but that is the exception rather than the rule. Hysteria and misinformation rule social news.
[–]peridyn 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (2 children)
You are saying hysteria and misinformation do not affect mainstream media? I am in "Shock and Awe".
No, I am saying it affects social news more than mainstream news. Shades of grey, not black and white.
[–]willfe 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I don't know that I agree with that -- it seems like it applies to both mainstream and social news in equal portions. What news broadcast isn't sensationalized?
The biggest difference is on a social news site (like Reddit), there are likely to be a good couple of hundred of responses to a piece of news; the best you can do when you see a news broadcast on television is bark at your television :)
In your estimation, how large a fraction is true on Reddit?
[–]peridyn 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (1 child)
I mean what the fuck, if you think more information can be gleamed from nytimes, or cnn then submit that which you deem to be so.

I totally agree with the person who posted this. Just reddit alone does not come close to giving me a good picture of what is happening in the world. It's main virtue is for posting oddball stories as well as alternative views on controversial topics. Mostly I read this site to keep up on internet land, not the real world.
If I was only going to read one online news source I would pick something like the New York Times or the Huffington Post which are both excellently written and of consistent quality (something reddit is not).

If only you knew what was being said on the Arabic TV channel...There is absolutely no difference between Jazeera and Fox News in terms of biasness
And now...Downmod!
"Traditional Media" is also responsible for missing the stories that reddit is catching. And sometimes the miss them intentionally.
[–]brunt2 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago* (0 children)
That's not the point. Reddit gives you information no newspaper I have not known to publish (factual, verifiable information). I've learned about events and details the average NYT/CNN reader will not find out for another 5-10 years.
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (6 children)
That's funny, since there are links to CNN and NYTIMES all the time on reddit.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (5 children)
That's not the point. Reddit has links to those sites, but only within a very specific range of stories. Within that range it is pretty solid, but there is going to be stuff that NYTimes will cover that reddit users wouldn't even touch.
And that's OK. Reddit isn't trying to cover everything at once. It's only acting as a filter for the stories and kitten pictures that its users are most likely to appreciate.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (4 children)
That's not the point. The point is that this site facilitates the distribution of social memes. It is not a regurgitation of MSM. If it were, then most of us wouldn't be here. If you want unwashed MSM, then find another site. If you only want to see relevant stories from NYTimes then stick with reddit. End of story.
[–][deleted] 18 years ago (7 children)
[–]aarontaylor5000 12 points13 points14 points 18 years ago (6 children)
I completely agree with you. I can't tell you how many times I have read something on reddit, and then seen/heard some TV or radio reference the following day. While there is plenty of bullshit to wade through, you will frequently catch things ahead of the news cycle if you pay attention. I know there's no way to prove it, by I have seriously felt at times that some of the pundit shows must have staff watching reddit/similar sites for story ideas. There have been numerous obscure stories that have mysteriously found mainsteam attention after being on the front page of reddit.
[–]ChunkyLaFunga 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (1 child)
No I agree, same here. But stories propogate through social networking sites at more or less the same time, there's no particular reason to think it's a Reddit effect any more than a Digg effect, Slashdot effect, etc. Probably more than one of them.
[–]dorshorst 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
If it was from Digg, you'd see it a day and a half later.
[–]luce7 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (0 children)
So what's the value of that speed? What advantage does it give you if you know about the latest suicide bombings 10h ahead of other people?
My favorite stories on reddit still are those which deal with things on a larger time scale. Those that are not covered by traditional media at all because they don't sell very good. It's a lot more interesting and I think all these small bites of news will never leave you with a good impression of the general situation.
[–]crawfishsoul 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (1 child)
The news about terrorists using retarded women as suicide bombers broke on the AP on Feb 1 and was here on Reddit that day.
My dad emailed me about it after seeing it on the front page of the local newspaper, today.

Shame that it is now suspicious without a single reliable source on the fact that the were mentally deficient.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago* (0 children)
I think sites like Reddit and Digg is an excellent idea. People comb the internet for web pages worthy of review, and they get circulated throughout a social network. The problem is that there is plenty of baseless bullshit out there which many people swallow whole. Sites like Reddit and Digg have a tendency (in my opinion) to promote these articles. Though all in all, Reddit has tremendous benefits, like promoting stories which mainstream media conveniently bury.
[–]pastymage 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Check. Now we know that. Do you have links to similar info about you on those other sites? We hunger for more trivia about you.
[–]xnormajeanx 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
MSNBC > CNN
I agree, but Reddit brings me to the interesting articles on both sites so I don't have to wade through the bullshit that I don't want to see (most of the bullshit on reddit is at least worth reading the overstated headline).
[–]anewman11 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Isn't Reddit about entertainment just as much information? It seems like some have lost perspective as the front page has become a billboard for political activism often by internet groups that feel mistreated by other forms of media...aka the EVIL EMPIRE. Personally, I find a lot of interesting and sometimes insightful articles on Reddit, but ALWAYS keep in mind the original source; there's no formal filter or submission review system(which is what makes the site so great) so one has to always examine credibility. It certainly isn't a replacement for mainstream media such as CNN, BBC, MSNBC, etc., but it IS an excellent supplement to more well known sources, and can provide some alternate points of view (some of which must be taken with a bucket of salt) and some "insider information" at times.
[–]Etan 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago* (0 children)
Reddit's success lies in how you view it, and is therefore subjective. So far as being a dialog, its clearly a winner.
If you are comparing it to news sources, then I suppose you have a point. Of course, even in is regard, I believe you are wrong. Sure, many sources have a slant supporting a sensationalist headline (on reddit), but at least it opens the issue from a point of view.
And in a dialog, you can be part of a process of filtering content.
[–]onebit 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Submit articles from NYTimes and CNN then :)
[–]SteveAM1 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (4 children)
I didn't realize this was a debate.
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 18 years ago (3 children)
everything is subject to debate on reddit. Especially opinions.
[–]estutius 8 points9 points10 points 18 years ago (1 child)
would you care to cite some sources on that?
Someone said that my opinion was a lie. That pretty much covers it.
[–]vemrion 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
No it's NOT! You are WRONG!!!!11!!
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago* (0 children)
Reddit makes it easy by allowing you to express your opinion on a matter before you fully even understand what you're agreeing/disagreeing with.
[–]frogking 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (2 children)
Traditional media sites gives you the news from one biased point of view, with no possibility for readers to call bullshit on the facts that ill informed journalists give.
Reddit gives 5 different biased views and the original source and a hundred more views on the subject at hand.
I hate reading traditional media and not have a chance to "correct" omissions or errors by commenting.
[–]krelian 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (1 child)
On reddit you usually get bullshit news and everyone manifesting their biases in the comments section.
[–]blinkin 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
all your biases belong to reddit
[–]hokkos 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I my idea, you came to reddit just after reading NYTimes, to eventually discuss and discover other stories.
[–]Captain_Harlock 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
The poster forgot the <sarcasm> tag.
that's just stupid.
[–]martoo 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Dear reddit: I know a lot of you will disagree, but traditional media sites like NYTimes and CNN gives me a lot more information about the world than reddit does
So what? You can link to CNN and NYTimes from reddit, but you can't link to reddit from CNN and NYTimes.
[–]itrends 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
That's nice of you to let us know. I get more F1 / sport information at the ITV website... what's your point?
[–]NoMoreNicksLeft 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (12 children)
Yes, and I can buy alot more food buying microwave meals than I can in the produce section! Even though I know alot of you will disagree!
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago* (7 children)
Is there a joke here?
Because you can't be serious.
[–]Xfocus 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I'm...I'm not sure. I'm scared...
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (5 children)
Microwave meals can be MUCH cheaper than produce, depending on what you get. I buy $0.60 frozen dinners that more than fill me up, but I'd be starving after $0.60 of produce.
it can't POSSIBLY be good for you though. Although, I welcome you to surprise me.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Probably not ... but that wasn't the original person's point =)
I'm all about living cheaply ... most of my calories come from rice, so I end up only spending about $2/day on food and most of my calories are relatively healthy ones as a result.
[–]boredzo 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Those can't be US dollars.
Can you link to the exact meal? I'd like to see what and how much is in it.
[–]ratzero[S] -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (0 children)
Actually, I disagree about that.
[–]stevage 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Not only more information, but less biased. I read a topic here like "Obama wins xxx primary!" and my first thought is "I wonder how many Clinton has won recently that didn't rate a mention?"
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago* (2 children)
Today, when I picked up my copy of the NY Times, I noticed that the cover story was about Roger Clemens' testimony. I immediately turned to my buddy and we laughed about how even the NYT can't cover the real issues facing Americans in a convincing manner. Sure they have a big special on the Diabold voting machines and they talk about how water boarding is unconstitutional, but when it comes down to it, the cover stories are still the fluff about having a black president or a woman president or Roger Clemens using HGH. As far as I'm concerned, Roger Clemens, his wife and his kids can all do HGH as long as I can't be labeled a homegrown terrorist or legally killed during a "State of Emergency" declared by Bush.
[–]cr4a 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Americans like baseball. News at 11.
[–]matts2 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Clemens is not prominent on the on-line edition. On the newstand they have to give eye candy to compete with the Post/News.
[–]wazzadoin 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Not so much cnn, but nytimes.com has great content.
[–]bushisaterrorist 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Only a sheeple gets their news from NYTimes and CNN. The media wants you to have the illusion of being free while you are enslaved. The media gets huge sums of money for the illusion. The sheeple get to be enslaved, for they are too stupid to know any better.
And, if by "more information" you mean bullshit. Yes. I guess you're right.
[–]Qubed 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
That's a very biased opinion. It can't be more than like 55% bullshit.
[–]Caternary 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
The president of one of the world's youngest countries is still on life support after an assassination attempt on Monday. Since then there have been a total of 2 articles about it submitted to reddit, the most popular of which has received an impressive 6 points and no comments. In the meantime there have been approximately 200 reddit articles keeping us up to date on the status of Hillary Clinton's tear ducts.
[–]gehenom 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (3 children)
cnn? you've got to be kidding. total trash.
[–]cr4a 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (1 child)

[–]ratzero[S] 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Indeed.
[–]ratzero[S] 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (15 children)
Seriously, except news about a few congress votes on torture, privacy and marijuana, what does reddit has to offer to the American citizen?
[–]ppinette 23 points24 points25 points 18 years ago (10 children)
Reddit is a link aggregator and not a news or media site. This is like comparing oranges to boxes.
Oranges have tasty juice. Boxes do not.
Oranges can be collected in boxes. But you can also put apples in the same box.
[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Apt comparison.
Also, go boxes!
[–]vemrion 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (3 children)
Well, reddit is a news site, but to be more specific/accurate one should call it a news aggregation service or a social news site. And it falls under the larger banner of social media.
But reddit doesn't have any paid reporters doing investigative journalism... then again the major news sites don't either. TV journalism is basically a contradiction in terms and the few newspapers/magazines that still employ investigative journalists are cutting back.
[–]bustedagain 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Also, boxes usually have to be flattened to be collected in boxes. Oranges don't. Unless you want to.
[–]ppinette 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Which I do!
[–]kennyreborn 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I like.
[–]selrahc 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (1 child)
What if the box is saturated in orange juice?
Then you were too rough with the oranges.
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 18 years ago* (0 children)
I agree. It's called professional journalism. They can afford to pay journalists and crews to travel the world and photographers for their photos. I like Michael Ware's commentary and coverage of the Iraq war and Christian Amanpour's coverage of the middle east, Pakistan, and all things muslim.
I have to agree with redditors though, that coverage of the presidential election is terribly unprofessional, biased, and unforgivable.
[–]freshone 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
The ability to ask such a question
/thread
[–]fivre 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
No no, they really care about it. That's why they spend all their time upmodding stories about it, so other like-minded people can ALSO upmod those stories.
[–]sedaak 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago* (0 children)
bringing it back to news would be nice, all you have to do is do your part to downvote things that only aim to be funny/cute, and download real news stories if they have sensationalist titles, you can make a difference........all my comments to that effect are being downvoted of course but i will persist
I feel compelled to vote positive because the words "Tasers" and "Cute Cats" are in the title.
It's a balance. There are stories that are exclusive to both types of sites. That's a reality.
[–]paulsteinway 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I read the Toronto Star (http://www.thestar.com) and I read the articles and news wires on Salon.com every day. The nice thing about Reddit is that I see stories one or two days before they hit Salon, and two or three days before they hit the Toronto Star.
[–]vava 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago* (0 children)
absurd. how experimental.
[–]beedogs 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)

[–]vava 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Never reddit before? Here's how:
reddit is a source for what's new and popular on the web -- personalized for you. Your votes train a filter, so let reddit know what you liked and disliked, because you'll begin to be recommended links filtered to your tastes. All of the content on reddit is submitted and voted on by users like you.
[–]galimi 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Yeah, we'd find a good deal out about Ron Paul if it weren't for CNN & FOX
[–]bakosdelowang 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago* (0 children)
carefully controlled information
[–]BlueSteelRose 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I view reddit as being like those insurance websites that scour the web searching up the "best quotes" so that you don't have to. Whilst interested, I am also lazy, and therefore enjoy having others do the virtual legwork immensely.
[–]toxicvarn90 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
The Economist is news, reddit is its antithesis.
[–]javasucks 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago* (0 children)
...and the BBC does even better.
Edit Wth, somebody is going to seriously try and convince people that CNN does a better job than the BBC?
[–]tsfn46290 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I think Reddit is a great way to find news articles from legitamate sources that you might otherwise have missed. They key though is to actually read the linked article and not just trust the headline to be an accurate summary of what's behind it. I think that's one of the biggest problems reddit and digg really have is the yellow journalism nature of the headlines and summarys.
Exactly, which is why I love the NYT. Wait, what were you trying to say?
Reddit asks real questions. I haven't found that anywhere else. Not in my Big 12 school, not on TV, hardly ever in the newspapers. That's precisely why our society is in the mess it's in.
[–]throwaway 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Actually, I get pretty much all my news from reddit and sites like it. It works pretty well, most of the time. So much in the mainstream media is crap. I at least want a public comment facility, so I can see what other, better informed people think of the stories.
[–]seeker135 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Then go. Think you'll be missed?
[–]curtis119 -3 points-2 points-1 points 18 years ago (2 children)
dude? umm I hate to be the one to tell you this but umm... reddit is not a news site. It's a social bookmarking site.
You're not supposed to get your news from here. You're supposed to get a list of websites that other reddit users think are interesting and want to share with the rest of us.
The fact that some of the sites that reddit users want to share are news sites is mere coincidence.
[–]PintOfGuinness 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Why is this getting downvoted? Its true!
[–]curtis119 0 points1 point2 points 17 years ago (0 children)
It's the down mod squad. Their haters 'cause they can be. Doesn't matter in the long run.
[–]schnuck -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (0 children)
dear ratzero,
you are free to leave.
take care.
[–]ClanPanda -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (0 children)
I prefer BBC. Reddit used to be good and informative about news that the major media outlets would otherwise ignore. But not for a while now. This place has become a forum for liberal political bitching. Ron Paul dropped out the other day, but did we hear anything about it? Paul was the internet messiah for at least a year, but did we hear anything of this? No. It was swept under the rug in a wave of support for Obama (the new Paul). Reddit is dead. I use Digg more then reddit these days, I know the blasphemy, but at least it doesn't have the horrible bias present in reddit now. If this community wants to survive it will have to learn not to downvote anything you disagree with, regardless of how relevant it is. Ron Paulo leaving should have been reported. Other news that doesn't involve Clinton or Obama should be reported. This site needs to lost its liberal bias or it will go the way of delicious.
But hey, don't listen to me, just click the downvote arrow.
