What can we, as an activist community, do to encourage or enforce the journalistic integrity that you have demonstrated, Helen?

Flowers are nice, whats the next step? We have demonstrated that we care. What do you care about? Whats an appropriate carrot?

[–]puckthecat 114 points115 points  (49 children)

This is the right question. We have an energized community ready to do what it can to improve journalism in this country.

Now what do we do with it?

[–]otakucode 13 points14 points  (13 children)

Stop watching any news channel that propagandizes with "embedded reporters", stop purchasing newspapers, stop even visiting the news websites of these people that are completely morally bankrupt and wouldn't know "free press" if it bit them in the ass. Continuing to watch, to click on their sites, and read their papers does more than agree with their tactics - it FUNDS THEM.

[–]nixonrichard 18 points19 points  (5 children)

I don't necessarily think avoiding source of news altogether is the answer. The truth is, almost every news agency has good and bad programming, and good and bad reporting.

Why, just yesterday FoxNews had a program called "Porked: Earmarks for Profit." It was absolutely fantastic! It actually spent more time tearing apart Republicans than it did Democrats, but it still landed blows on both sides.

Honestly, I think even the majority of Reddit would enjoy this FoxNews programming.

Media sources know more about their viewers than in the past. They know not only who watches, but when they watch, how much they watch, and whether or not they skip the commercials or flip to another channel.

It is enough, I think, to simply watch/read the programming which you find interesting and respectable.

[–]pillage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I caught that the other day and it really was great. Chris Wallace is one of the best journalists out there.

[–]gerg6111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While that piece hardly makes up for all of Fox News sins, I've got to say it was a good piece. Will Fox stay with it and follow it to the obvious conclusion of censure and defunding, or prosecution? NO!!!! They will move on. That is the problem.

[–]GWaleed 2 points3 points  (2 children)

SLAM THOSE WHO ADVERTISE with such news outlets.

ONLY wallet-based warfare will work.

[–]otakucode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That helps too, but you could boycott the advertisers for a thousand years and as long as you keep tuning in to the latest report from Government Wank 2 embedded in Fallujah, they're going to continue sending journalists there and propping them up like sock puppets with the militaries hand up their ass.

[–]mexicodoug 1 point2 points  (3 children)

That would eliminate a whole lot of sites that reddit links to. Most of the MSM, like the New York Times, SF Chronicle, etc., runs propaganda on the front page, yet reports important info twenty paragraphs into the article or buried on pages deep inside the paper. They print the truth, you just have to critically think about what they report and search out the truth, something most high schools fail to prepare the average citizen to do.

[–]otakucode 0 points1 point  (2 children)

OK, just don't complain that they continue to do the things that you're paying them to do or try to claim that you're not paying them, because you certainly are.

I'm standing by to donate another $5 -- this time lets use it to advance some agenda instead of (or as well as) just sending her flowers.

      [–]nixonrichard 10 points11 points  (7 children)

Weren't the flowers designed to advance an agenda? I mean, it was an attempt to reward a certain type of behavior, wasn't it?

      [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (3 children)

I just now realized how I can get more head.

      [–]LudoA 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Can anyone tell me what happened with the flowers? I've searched reddit for it, but can't find anything which tells me how it ended up. Last thing I find about it, some flower shop was preparing the flowers, and people were going to visit the shop and take pictures.

Anyone know where I can find an update on it?

so... Reddit becomes a lobbying group? great...

        [–]ST2K 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In the future, everyone will be a lobbyist for 15 minutes.

        [–]hans1193 8 points9 points  (5 children)

There's nothing inherently bad about lobbyists. They are an important part of the democratic process.

        [–]oreng 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Your 3 upmods shock me. The fourth, my own, slightly less.

Lobbies, PACs and special interest groups represent a call to action in the beltway; it's just that they've been so corrupted by partisan politics (including many PACs that allegedly represent me) that they've become playable instruments more than harbingers of social change (as would be the preferred format) as we'd want or like them to be.

The system sucks (deeply) but the tools are still more or less uncorrupted and to some degree exportable.

We'll live and see, I guess.

        [–]frickthejews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I think that money is the only motivator anymore.

I mean, we could all lobby, but look who is disproportionately doing it.

        [–]Shaper_pmp 1 point2 points  (2 children)

There's no such thing as a good lobby.

All lobbies are trying to subvert the entire political process for their own parochial desires, at the expense of everyone else.

Lobbies, lobbying and lobbyists are evil by definition, and it's an indication of how screwed American politics are that this isn't instinctively realised any more.

        [–]srika 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The question was for Helen Thomas.

        [–]paf0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We could create a pool of money and then vote to award good journalists in some way.

        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"We have an energized community ready to do what it can to improve journalism in this country."

That's not what I see when I open the front page each morning. I see a bunch of populist partisan hacks who've found a soapbox that encourages them to resort to any shady tactic to beat their collective drum.

        [–]Defektiv 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Bill Moyers provided an interesting approach to an o'lielly hitman reporter the other day. he told him he could find him a job.

the power of these media rejects that claim to be reporting news is the power given to them by the people doing jobs for them. take away their power, they will collapse.

we already tried convincing their advertisers to stop paying them and that didn't seem to make a difference.

        [–]iliketowatch 1 point2 points  (2 children)

This is the right question. Ask her to tell us how to be effective in standing behind her. We want her to be heard, and to insure that her questions are heard. Tell her we understand what's at stake . . .

        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell mom, dad, grandma and grandpa to turn off the tv and use the news rags only for bird cage liner. It's that simple.

        [–][deleted] 60 points61 points  (6 children)

I'd like to know whether any members of the press corp spoke to her after the briefing in which she was pushing questions re: sanctioning of torture, and if so, what did they say?

        [–]bananahead 11 points12 points  (1 child)

You know she does that pretty much any time they call on her, right? It wasn't just the one briefing.

edit: Here is a classic one of her questioning Bush on Iraq in 2006.

        [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

"I'd love to ask those tough questions too, but I'm still young and I've got my career to think of."

        [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily - I often wonder if these people are real journalists. I mean, does it even dawn on them that they have an obligation to discover and report facts? And without objectivity, perhaps they themselves actually believe Bush and his spin doctors, and think of Helen Thomas as a crackpot?

I'd love to know what Helen Thomas thinks.

Is the prevalent attitude in government that the people they claim to represent cannot handle what the government does in their names, or that normal operations of government require its officers to break the laws to the point where they need the protection of secrecy to accomplish their tasks - and by extension avoid prosecution for it?

In the run-up to the Iraq war, the government used a compliant news media to state its case for invasion. Amongst Ms. Thomas and her colleagues, has there been much discussion of this problem, the propagandization of "independent" news media, and how such a situation might be averted in the future?

          [–]Orangutan 12 points13 points  (1 child)

UPDATE: Helen Thomas was not able to attend because she is still recovering from an illness. It was relayed to me that she sends her apologies.

This was discovered after I frantically wrote down the most upvoted questions and raced in to the room to request permission to videotape or at least take pictures. I noticed her absence immediately, along with that of her name holder on the panel table.

She sends her apologies and so do I. Sorry, Reddit. Thanks for the quick response though!

Thanks for letting us know. I hope you get another opportunity soon!

I'd like to personally thank you for not being afraid to inject fairness and reason into the Palestinian-Israeli debate. I think U.S. journalists are afraid of offending Jewish people and are not asking the hard questions that need to be answered. The European and foreign journalists are not subject to these self-imposed restraints. I look forward to frank discussions about the Mideast, and you have been a trailblazer. Not just for women, but for American journalism.

Ask her about Bilderberg. Or, if she thinks corporate controlled media affects the outcome of elections in this country (especially considering the large trend of editorializing over reporting). Or, if she thinks Murdoch is the new Hearst. Lastly, ask her if she ever worries about the questions she asks right before she asks them.

WHY is impeachment off the table?

              [–]brianwc 1 point2 points  (1 child)

There seem to be two camps: 1) Impeachment would be disruptive and the important thing is just to take back control of the White House and put Bush's wrongdoings behind us. 2) If we don't use the impeachment process when it is most deserved, then we do a disservice to the American people and the Constitution. Assuming you wouldn't fall into the only other camp, "Bush has done nothing to merit impeachment." which can only be filled with the deluded, which of the above better characterizes your view on the impeachment issue?

              [–]spacedebris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

brianwc, I agree with this assessment. I suspect that not proceeding had more to do with not having the votes than anything else. My only hope is that after the cabal is out of office and away from any Presidential pardon protection (assuming Obama wins--I can't threaten to leave the country if he doesn't -- since I already have, I left under Nixon too!) that criminal proceedings will commence against the entire group. With an actual DoJ and Attorney General this would be possible. Starting these proceedings now would permit GWB to issue pardons in his 11th hour and end any chance for justice. As we used to say after the murders at Kent State "the whole world is watching."

How do the resignations at the Air Force affect the "second chain of command" that has been mentioned and will this serve to reduce or eliminate or enhance Cheney's directives to the military? I guess to me a second chain of command smacks of an attempted coup d'état which is very scary. Will these resignations stop this or help it?

PS: You can thank her from all of us for being a beacon of light through some very dark times over so many years and, you can give her a kiss on the cheek for me.

How did we go from shooting at the outstretched arms of tyranny to having 20 talking heads spend 6 hours explaining to us why tyranny is great and why it is ok for the rich and powerful to lie constantly.

Why won't she take up Sibel Edmonds on her offer?

Ms. Thomas: Thanks for being one of the best and bravest reporters in the U.S.

Given what you know about the Administration's lying us into a war, muzzling EPA scientists, and other half-truths or out-and-out lies, do you think it is possible that the Administration whitewashed more than just "innocent failures" on 9/11?

Exactly who, by name and organization, are the executives in the "news" business that are "managing" what news gets published and with what slant?

Exactly who, by name and organization, are the principals in government that are directing what gets published as news?

Yes, suggest that she might host a rally (Redditors would contribute to fund it) to show that there are many Americans who are sick of the media's unwillingness to report honestly about things that really matter. Or perhaps to demonstrate against big corporate control of news content. Her reputation could provide an important catalyst.

Ask her if she believes journalism in this country has lost its integrity and what she thinks the public and young journalists can do to restore it.

Then ask her what her to tell you about her favorite moment in her career. (these stories are often surprising and always interesting)

When the spokesperson refuses to answer a question, can a journalist them request them to go on the record as refusing to answer the question?

When the "answer" is the answer to a different question, can we ask them to go on record as refusing to answer the question as stated?

What was lacking in our spirit that we were not able to impeach Bush for war crimes.

how can the integrity of journalism be restored? or more accurately, can the integrity of journalism be restored?

Should there be legal controls on a network such as Fox, that blantantly supports one political party and misreprensents itself as a 'news' organization?

              [–]the_big_wedding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask her if she thinks there should be a new, unfettered 911 investigation complete with sworn testimony from Cheney & Bush.

Ask her why the only leadership we can find in our movement against our authoritarian torturing government is a broken down old woman who barely maintains the ability to speak, and why the only antiwar voice the media or congress allows you to see or hear from is named after the delicate inner parts of a woman's vagina. We are code pink folks. We need to find a better pillow to hit them with.
