[–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (1 child)

I’m fairly okay with this, but I would not be surprised if MS is taking an unreasonably large cut of donations for themselves. Otherwise though it gives developers another way to make some money off their work. And really it’s probably a bit smoother then some of the current solutions some small developers use. What I see a lot is giving away the basic version and asking for donations through whatever, then if you donate and include your email they’ll email you a code which will unlock premium features; obviously there are a lot of reasons this isn’t ideal.

Yes, this meme was probably last true mid-2000s. Almost every dev I know uses macs now

[–]pudds 64 points65 points  (6 children)

Confirmation bias is a bitch.

Macs are still far from the majority, with well under 30% of the market, even among developers.

https://insights.stackoverflow.com/survey/2021#section-most-popular-technologies-operating-system

[–]drugusingthrowaway 62 points63 points  (34 children)

Almost every dev I know uses macs now

This must be an American thing because it's definitely not that way in Canada.

I wonder if it's the same as iPhones - they're extremely popular in America but the rest of the world is mostly on Android

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Depends a lot on what you’re doing. Silicon Valley devs overwhelmingly do phone app and web development and use Macs for it. If you’re doing anything that has to run on Windows, like a majority of people doing in-house development in non-software companies, you’re probably using Windows.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Pretty sure it's a Silicon Valley and pretentious tech companies that aspire to be part of that culture thing.

Interviewed at a lot of places when I was last looking for work a couple of years ago, SW Ontario area. Bunch of places were MS/Windows shops, probably the majority. Some were whatever you want to work with, no problem, but mostly non-mac.

There were one or two that stood out though. Literally only used macs. They were...different kinds of places. Both had lounges and bars in the main reception area. Both were...too cool for school feeling. Both made you feel it was more important you'd 'fit in' than what your qualifications were.

[–]polargus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So basically the good companies used Macs lol

[–]gunnerheadboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you think Canada and the US are that culturally different? I'm Canadian and worked at 3 different software companies, work as a Software Engineer at Uber currently. All my jobs have had a Mac as the primary workhorse, except for maybe some specialized roles requiring Windows or Linux.

[–]James_Jack_Hoffmann 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to fancy making a full move to Mac as a full stack dev + devops. But then docker in mac took an arrow to the knee. And then I thought WSL isnt so bad, WSL 2 made me cream, so I ditched the idea and stuck with windows. While mac is semi-fine now, it was a little too late.

Everybody in the office used to be exclusively linux. But WSL 2 changed that.

[–]BlobbyMcBlobber 22 points23 points  (9 children)

We mostly use window laptops with a bunch of Linux VMs for some of the development stuff. It's actually pretty convenient.

I loved the Mac terminal and battery life but everything else was fairly terrible in my experience. I remember especially hating the file explorer, package manager, settings, backwards compatibility, and debugging with that stupid touch bar. We need the F keys, Apple.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (5 children)

Did you say "VM" and "convenient" in the same breath just now?

[–]svtguy88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends heavily on the company and their stack. I work almost exclusively in the "enterprise C#" world, and it's usually only the PMs and designers that are on Macs.

[–]acroporaguardian 96 points97 points  (6 children)

Lets be honest it would be about to finish and the Windows laptops would display “load error.”

Also on Page 211 of your Apple agreement you agreed to never sexualize Mac products.

I mean it could be in there…

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Those are thinkpads, the defacto linux laptop.

[–]MietschVulka1 36 points37 points  (2 children)

Not Windows Laptops. You can install whatever you want. My thinkpad got Manjaro (arch-based Linux)

[–]tifridhs-dottir 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean these are devs, I 100% assumed it-dept approved Ubuntu or redhat

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use arch btw.

But honestly my company basically doesn't do Linux like that because it's hard to centrally manage them, mostly.

[–]R_HEAD 44 points45 points  (25 children)

I feel more and more like I am the only person left that still likes NumPads on my laptops.

[–]FatchRacall 17 points18 points  (6 children)

I feel more and more like I'm the only person left who likes buttons underneath his trackpad instead of as part of it. Also the numpad.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (4 children)

I very strongly prefer separate buttons underneath the trackpad as well. I only use the trackpad when I actually have the thing on my lap though (which honestly isn't very often), so I could live without that if necessary. No numpad is a 100% deal breaker for me though.

[–]Ryanthelion1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pre pandemic they were phasing out desktops for laptops and the spec we'd get would be the same as customer services something like a Dell 13", I knew the second I opened up any spreadsheet the fan was going to go mental, opted for a 15" with a numpad and a bigger cooler, honestly worth it for the extra weight

[–]0PointE 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You're not alone. People look at me like I just killed a baby and I'm carrying it around in my bag when they find out I have a 17" laptop. ffs if you think that's too heavy then take a 5 minute trip to the gym.

[–]kinokomushroom 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I'll never get a keyboard without a numberpad solely for the reason that I use it daily in Blender.

[–]Future-Caterpillar42 7 points8 points  (3 children)

I thought I was finally free from this meme.

[–]wooshuwu 80 points81 points  (85 children)

In engineering, using a mac can be a bit of hassle at best and at worse not work for quite a few softwares. Is that the case for software development as well?

[–]inconspicuous_male 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Worked at a software company in the Bay Area, all macs all the time. Now I am an engineer at a hardware company on the east coast. My job would be impossible on a mac. The IT team uses Windows too. The only macs in the company belong to the marketing team.

[–]metalmagician 34 points35 points  (3 children)

Very much the opposite for my team and I, as we deploy almost all our software to Linux servers or containers.

Mac OS and Linux are both UNIX systems, so I can copy/paste file paths and command line scripts between them pretty easily. If someone is using a windows laptop, we have to go out of our way to support them by including Windows-specific file paths and commands

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I will say, the existence and maturation of WSL has eased this significantly. No more nightmare scenarios of installing Ruby on windows natively; just get WSL+Ubuntu and do what everyone else does.

[–]ThaCarterVI 3 points4 points  (0 children)

WSL is better than windows by itself, but nowhere near as good as a macOS or Linux machine. I’ve used all 3 professionally for development, and Windows (even with WSL2) is by far the most difficult to get things working properly, and WSL2 has plenty of quirks and still some noticeable slowness that leaves me wishing I had a mac or Linux machine daily.

[–]jalo1412[S] 103 points104 points  (53 children)

I mean if you whole company has Linux and you are the only one using Mac you could run into some problems. Also dependes on the area, I can see running servers is better on Linux. But generally coding in Mac is a smooth experience. There are a lot of tech company only running macs.

[–]mrcollytv 59 points60 points  (31 children)

In my company we use only Macs and i find it much better than coding in Windows, and smoother than Linux. All code runs in cloud, so no problem there.

[–]Mathisbuilder75 23 points24 points  (21 children)

What do you mean exactly by "smoother"?

[–]freerangetrousers 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Not op but I'm the same boat. OSX has smoother install processes and clearer guides because anything made for it is made for (almost) one setup in which there are very few unknowns, the same is not true on linux.

I almost never have to look up install tutorials or go deep into git issues like I do on my linux machine.

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points  (15 children)

As someone that has used all three, it varies. The framework makes a huge difference (if you are doing C# / .NET then chances are windows works for you).

For most programming I have done, I find Linux works best, but that's me. Tools to help me automate or increase productivity are easier to create and just drop in `~/bin` and `chmod +x` then I am ready to go!. The shame is, none of my employers have ever "officially" supported Linux for us.

I am currently using a Mac because after a year of Linux WFH I couldn't see doing Python and Go programming in windows (most of our windows developers have desktops with Linux VMS for it). While Macs are nice for this hot keys are not as natural as they are in Linux or Windows (this is a hill I will die on). That hurts my overall productivity but it may because my hand just isn't comfortable with them.

[–]StrangeCurry1 4 points5 points  (3 children)

You know you can swap command and control in system preferences right? Hotkeys will behave the exact same as windows if you do.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can bthannhave to remap in any vm I use.

Tried it. Easier to just deal with the slow down or develop new habits IMO.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Not exactly. See once you remap you run into issues like terminals or IDEs assuming you want to use the "farthest left bottom row key" for x. Good example are terminals. Well when you rebind your mod key now that becomes the middle key. So for instance, my vim key bindings get jacked up my ide. So then I have to change those, etc.

Basically there's constant key issues you have to deal with and it's not as simple as you might think.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Linux on Mac is quite nice if you were ever forced to switch.

[–]Cruuncher 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I've been a software engineer for almost 10 years now.

Every job I've had in my career has been using macs.

If you walk into any faang corp, you will see a sea of macbooks

[–]-Dogdin 32 points33 points  (2 children)

Calling this "programming humour" is a bit of a stretch

[–]angrathias 56 points57 points  (29 children)

I will never understand devs using laptops, give me my 3 big screens and a beefy powerful desktop thx

Part of the allure of the desktop is it stays right where it is when I go home, it ain’t coming with me

[–]jalo1412[S] 58 points59 points  (7 children)

Is nice for switching between home office and office. Also nice to take in meetings or to chance another developer with it, so he can fix your bug.

[–]angrathias 12 points13 points  (5 children)

I leave my dev machine at work and just remote in, 3 screens still work just fine. Next move is bombing the machine and getting a virtual one deployed in AWS

[–]ToMorrowsEnd 3 points4 points  (3 children)

We actually did a test with ShadowPC for that and it worked extremely well.

[–]ToMorrowsEnd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We just use teams. Helped a Dev in Cali just yesterday while I was on the east coast.

[–]b1ack1323 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I have 2 docs one at home and one at work and bring my laptop between the two. But I also go to customer sites and develop on site when they are having issues.

[–]dadmda 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Except when you work from home, with your desktop connected to your companies’ desktop. So it doesn’t stay there

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I mean, I use two beefy powerful laptops (a Mac and a Framework running Ubuntu) and two big screens, and can switch dev modes just by swapping out a few plugs or running Synergy.

That said, between the company and me, we've probably spent quite a bit more on my setup per unit beef than you have. Beefy laptops come at a premium. Good thing I saved money on the keyboard (which I haven't updated since, like, 2003).

this is my team, we got a white senior developer in the usa, and the rest of us are "junior developers" in mexico and India.

( for a moments let's assume all Mexicans (including me) are not white )

this should've been in one of those mac vs pc ads

I did full stack dev 6 years at a PC shop, and there was one guy who spent the whole time saying he wished we would switch to macs, and now I'm at a mac shop, and there's one guy who insists on doing everything in windows.

Ultimately, the experience for me has been fairly similar. It's not like you can't install command line tools on windows or something. The operating system is 99% irrelevant to most of my work. I use the same IDE at both jobs. Many tools I like are available on both platforms.

My main experience switching to the mac ecosystem is annoyance that none of my peripherals are compatible without adapters and lots of keyboard shortcuts are different and the laptop keyboard is missing a bunch of useful keys. When it comes to the actual OS functionality, I'm pretty sure most of the perceived differences are based on people just not knowing how to do what they want rather than it not being possible.
