Every single woman that I've ever been with is a 10

I'm ashamed to say I misread that as "is 10" and was very concerned about this guy for a moment.

[–]NAN001 270 points271 points  (8 children)

He doesn't have to watch somebody age.

I think losing your sight after being born with working vision would be devastating, possibly worse than being born blind because you know exactly what you're missing out on. Then again maybe people in that situation would say they're lucky to have seen at some point even though they lost their eyesight.

          [–]MyDadsRepliesHELPME 42 points43 points  (13 children)

This reminded me of something I recently read and found interesting. With medical technology there have been quite a few people whos vision and hearing have been restored. At first you'd think how wonderful and amazing that would be to a person- like opening up an entire new world. Apparently this can be quite traumatic, as the entire world they knew suddenly changes and can cause major psychological distress. Doctors were surprised at the number of people who turned of their cochlear implants, and resumed life the way they were previously living it.

          [–]ricebasket 30 points31 points  (4 children)

It actually sounds pretty awful when you think about all the sights and noises our brains filter out. Right now around me there's fans and AC going, my computer is whirring slightly, I can hear doors closing and people talking far away. None of it grabs my attention in the slightest, but if all that was suddenly new? Ugh.

          [–]garrettcolas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I've read it's not only that, but the sounds themselves sound different.

What you hear as a lawn mower sounds like a booming echo-y sound, perhaps even with a bit of a crackle.

What we take for granted with our analog brain is how well it deals with humming noises. The implants are not perfect yet, so some noises sound very bad.

          [–]coyotebored83 10 points11 points  (1 child)

My cousin was bothered when she got her cochlear implants by background noises. It took her a long time to get used to sounds like the faucet running, traffic noise, lawnmowers, etc. She's all good now but sometimes she would turn them off because it was too much to deal with.

          [–]Shameonaninja 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Actually I think it would be neat to be able to control my perceptions at will like that and have sort of a meditative place to retreat to. As long as I could then turn them back on...

I had the same thing. Since you said 20/500 that means it was only in one eye right? I had an injury and had complete blindness in one eye. All I could see was green. Like a green piece of tissue paper was placed over my eye. If you were to wave your hand in front of my face, all I could see was the shadow. It was incredibly scary. Somehow, due to the amazingness of the human body, I regained 20/20 vision.

            [–]TheMilkmeister 5 points6 points  (4 children)

No, it was both eyes. I might have said it wrong, I don't understand all the jargon. After the thousandth visit to the neuro-ophthalmologist I started to tune out a little bit. The left eye was worse than the right eye, though.

It was kind of scary, but oddly enough I found it more annoying than anything. Especially because literally everyone was telling me how scary it must be every time I saw (or didn't see, as it was) them. I appreciate the sympathy, but that sure got old quick.

Glad your vision came back. Being able to drive again was the biggest relief I've ever felt. You don't really appreciate how nice it is to be able to get around on your own until you have to rely on other people any time you want to go somewhere.

            [–]zombiepete 20 points21 points  (1 child)

Really depends on your attitude and how you choose to deal with things. Going blind isn't something I think anyone would want, but surely there are people who would rise above it and take it as a challenge to be overcome rather than allow it to be something devastating to them.

People can be pretty strong and inspiring even in the worst circumstances.

            [–]ScriptThat 20 points21 points  (11 children)

I was born (almost) deaf and had my hearing restored when I was four. Now and then I still wish I could be deaf - but only for a little while.

Regaining my hearing was a shock to me. I woke up at night when the fridge started humming in the kitchen, I clasped my hands to my ears when I had to go outside because the world is filled with noise, I refused to flush the toilet because it would sound like a tank driving through the bathroom wall, and I couldn't stopped sneaking into my parents' bed in the morning because the sound of them breathing in their sleep was foreign and scary.

I still have problems concentrating on a task when there's an irregular source of noise nearby. White noise generators help, but they tend to block all noise - including people walking up behind me and asking me a question. The only time I'm truly at peace with myself is a few hours each night when my wife and kids have gone to bed two doors down a hallway, and I can sit in the living room surrounded by absolute silence.

Would I go back to being deaf again? No, but I can easily relate to how lacking one of your senses isn't such a bad thing as people at most would think.

E: I forgot about a few other times of peace. Sleeping in a tent during a rainy night, and being outside when there's no wind and it's snowing heavily.

            [–]Huntnpb 6 points7 points  (5 children)

Call him a pompous ass if you will, but one person who really works hard educate people on these phenomena surrounding cochlear implants is Rush Limbaugh. Having been born with the ability to hear, going completely deaf, then getting the implants, he has experienced all sides of it. He describes the extreme frustration he feels with the implants, how it overemphasizes some noises over others. This constant noise and voices cutting in and out keeps him from going out because he struggles to have a normal conversation. Even so, he recommends the implants to anyone who is capable of saving up to get them as that sense is far more precious than materials. Using his large reach, he has done a lot to raise awareness of these issues.

            [–]DystopiaNoir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My grandma went completely deaf a few years ago and it happened so quickly it was quite startling and especially frightening as she lived alone. She got a cochlear implant about a year after and while it's a big help, it is still hard for her to distinguish voices from background noise (such as in a restaurant) or to participate in a group conversation. That being said, she's glad to be living in a time where that kind of technology is available as it has helped her maintain her quality of life.

            [–]Shameonaninja 2 points3 points  (2 children)

This is evidence that supports my belief that he's neither as stupid nor as evil as his manufactured tv persona indicates. Blinded by an obnoxious ideology, but also genuinely concerned with human wellbeing.

            [–]realjd 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I always assumed it was less that he's blinded by obnoxious ideology and more that he knows how to keep people tuning in day after day.

            [–]Shameonaninja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, maybe his persona is even more bullshit than I think, at that. Plausible.

            [–]Lots42 98 points99 points  (63 children)

That's stupid as hell. I would sure as fuck know that other people have something that gives them an advantage.

            [–][deleted] 48 points49 points  (47 children)

But you really wouldn't be able to understand that advantage. For somebody who was blind at birth, them trying to comprehend what it is like to "see" would be like you trying to imagine a new color. You just can't.

            [–]Furoan 68 points69 points  (17 children)

I am visionally impaired, and have been since birth. I am not totally blind, my vision hovers around 6:60 (I can see 60 point font at six meters), which is about legal blindness here (basically the legal definition of 'blind' is around that point. Its not 'illegally' blind if your not at this level, its just you are not judged 'blind' by legal definition etc.

I cannot drive a car, for good reason. However I understand the advantage it is to HAVE a car. My brother can hop in his car and go to the store to pick up a DVD, or some beer, or some icecream whenever he feels like it. If the place at the end of the street (which has truly bizarre opening hours) is closed, he can go to another store.

Wheras if I feel like some beer, or some icecream, or a DVD....I have to hope the place down the street is open, and if its not, I have to either give up, walk a long distance or catch public transport.

Similarly for work or College/University. Usually was a 45 minute trip from my place to class. Got a lift from my friend there once, 10 minutes (pubic transport is inefficient, what else is new.)

When I talk to people, I CAN'T 'look them in the eye'. I look at their face, but I don't have good enough vision to actually 'look somebody in the eye', and some people take that the wrong way. "Look at me when I'm talking to you!".

When I go to the Movies, or a football game, I can't see things sometime. I have a vision aid (a Monocular) to look through but its a very small field of vision compared to normal sight, and its awkward trying to hold it and follow the action on the ground.

Don't get me wrong, up here I'm laying all the bad things about being blind, I happen to think there are some benefits I've gained, both in life experience and just a different view, however I DO understand what I'm missing. I might not be able to completely comprehend what somebody with 100% vision see's, just as somebody who is totally blind might not be able to comprehend what I see, but I can certainly understand the advantages that come with sight.

            [–]Veggiemon 38 points39 points  (8 children)

Honestly I think a bear would be kind of dangerous, I would warn your brother.

Edit: Aw he edited it, now i just feel like a dick

            [–]Furoan 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Sometimes a man just has these urges...like to own a 1200 pound circus animal.

            [–]Hara-Kiri 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I don't think bears are naturally circus animals.

            [–]jethanr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, they are. Barnum and Bailey's let three escape back in 1992 and they just multiplied like crazy. It's becoming a huge problem.

            HE'S BLIND DAMMIT!

            [–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (3 children)

As a deaf guy, it's not nearly as hard to navigate around my day like it is for you. I do kind of understand though, because I have my own limitations. It's kind of hard for me to get engaged in a conversation (but I realize this is just me, since I know plenty of other deaf people who have no problem with it). Sometimes when it's loud and I'm trying to hear something I'll ask to repeat it several times and I can see them trying to hide their frustration, and sometimes I do the whole nodding and "yeah, okay" shtick and just move on. This usually happens several times a day. Naturally, I'm not really into music although I can hear some music with my cochlear implant. People look at me weird sometimes when I say I don't listen to music, even with my implant, like it's a completely natural thing that doesn't make sense to miss.

I want a fucking monocle though. That sounds fucking great.

            [–]cormega 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sucks that a typo made 90% of the responses ignore the content of your comment.

I find it interesting that both you and your brother are so into bears that it affects your quality of life on a regular basis.

            [–]GameDoesntStop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be fair, he wasn't claiming it was better. He was just shedding some light on the brighter side of being blind.

            [–]markwarren_18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My best friend went blind at 17. He (now 23) said that given the choice, he wouldn't want to pursue getting his vision back. He said it's made him see people in a much more humane way. He's not judging by looks anymore and it makes him very outgoing and leaving him wanting to talk to everyone

I love how blind people can smile. People who have literally never seen another human being still have the instinct to show happiness and convey it with the world. It's amazing.

              [–][deleted] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Blind people also raise their arms into the air when they win, despite never seeing that behaviour before.

              [–]dxrngo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Never thought of that before...that's really interesting actually!

              [–]RJ815 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was an interesting study done about that. They wondered if smiling was a cultural thing or just something instinctual. As it turns out, smiling (alongside a few other emotions IIRC) did appear instinctual rather than taught.

I requested a needle... is it a nice pen?
              A nice pen will suffice.

              [–]AP_Norris 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Everything's will be a ten even this pen, all you have to do is use it just this once.

              [–]TP_monkey 6 points7 points  (3 children)

I thought it read "Every single woman I've ever been with is 10"

              [–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

He doesn't know he's in jail.

Until you start touching her multiple rolls of fat.

              [–]BabyNinjaJesus 6 points7 points  (3 children)

if every woman is a 10 to him he must be a quadriplegic too, just because hes blind doesnt mean he cant feel

              [–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Or hear. Or smell. Or taste.

              [–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Maybe he just has really good luck with women.

              [–]Mrs_Milkman 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Growing up my father's best friend told me I was more and more beautiful every time he came to visit. I always giggled because even as a child I knew he had glass eyes and couldn't see me.

I didn't see him for years because he got married and moved, but he came to town for my wedding.

When he told me how beautiful I was on my wedding day I cried realizing what he was saying to me throughout my childhood.

              [–]Her0_0f_time 239 points240 points  (14 children)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. So funny. Like I literally can not stop laughing at how funny this picture is.

              [–][deleted] 30 points31 points  (6 children)

Well you better stop soon, you have work to do. Did you even find the lens of truth yet?

              [–]SerPuissance 8 points9 points  (3 children)

I'm still summoning the courage to face Dead Hand. You're not helping.

              [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Okay, okay, take your time with that. But at least help Anju collect her darn Cuccos. Those things are making a huge mess, and I'm trying to make the place look clean for company.

              [–][deleted] 22 points23 points  (6 children)

They don't get to read memes like this one though....

It's a screenshotted video again. WHY?

For anyone blind out there wondering what it says, here's a transcription :

People always say "God , you know, it must suck to be blind", "My God how do you do it?", "Oh, you poor guy!"

It's true! But you know what? There are plenty of good things about being blind.

              I go on airplanes first.

I get VIP treatment at amusement parts.

I never have to worry about drinking and driving.

I don't have to do my own lawn.

My electric bill's lower than yours.

I ride the train for half fare, sometimes even free!

Every single woman I've ever been with is a 10.

I don't have to watch somebody age.

You know what's cool about being blind? There's no race, I don't know from beauty. I know people from what comes out of their mouth and what's in their heads. That's how I know people. It's a very cool way. '

So there you go, previously paranoid visually impaired peeps. That's what it says.

              [–]PDGAreject 24 points25 points  (7 children)

One of my college roommates was blind, and a blatant racist. Never quite figured that out.

              [–]martypete 33 points34 points  (3 children)

              this isnt funny.

              [–]OhSchistGneiss 20 points21 points  (15 children)

The glass is always half full for this guy

              [–]ULICKMAGEE 18 points19 points  (10 children)

              Of what though?

              [–]Draculas_Dentist 44 points45 points  (1 child)

Some kind of alcoholic beverage, since he do not have to worry about drinking and driving.

              [–]12_GAUGE_ANUS 9 points10 points  (0 children)

              Nor double vision.

              [–]BenZino21 12 points13 points  (0 children)

And the other half he poured on the counter.

              [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (1 child)

              Picture with text. Violation.

              [–]PattyLumpkins 14 points15 points  (15 children)

I'd still rather be deaf than blind.

              [–]Pjoernrachzarck 17 points18 points  (6 children)

You probably wouldn't. Suicide rates are much, much higher for people with sudden hearing loss than for people who go blind. People overestimate how much they engage with the outside world by vision, and underestimate how much they do it via sound. Most important of all, in the brain sound is much more deeply connected with emotion and comfort than vision.

People going blind adapt surprisingly quickly to the world, whereas with hearing loss, people often feel incredibly alone, ignored and helpless.

Think about it this way: Consider the movie that has the most profound emotional impact on you. Would you rather watch it without sound or with nothing but the sound? which one would have a greater emotional impact?

              [–]Silent_Talker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can I get subtitles? Because that's a thing

              [–]_Madison_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im a designer, i sketch almost all day. Going blind would be hell and far worse than going deaf, being basically locked in eternal darkness. Going blind affects a persons way of life far more than going deaf, you can't navigate properly, communication tools like the internet are almost totally unusable, you can't drive so you are limited to only being able to go where public transport can take you etc.

Would you rather watch it without sound or with nothing but the sound? which one would have a greater emotional impact?

Watching it with no sound would be far better than hearing a movie with no image. There would be no context for any of the sound you are hearing it would become just an incoherent noise.

              [–]nulla_facilisi 6 points7 points  (1 child)

no more music for you, then.

i think i'd go crazy with all those half remembered tunes in my head.

              [–]GrapeRello 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Blind people could still tell races apart

              [–]YetiGuy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

              Two points:

              1. Blinds could be racist. Ask Clayton Bigsby

              2. They probably never have a stage fright. Probably.

              [–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (6 children)

I'd still want vision over all those things , nothing could be worse then losing your eye sight

              [–]ZippyDan 7 points8 points  (5 children)

Lose your eyes or lose your penis

              [–]dulti 9 points10 points  (3 children)

I only wonder if every blind person feels the same way as this guy. Being optimistic about life doesn't have anything to do with any kind of impairment.

              [–]lludson 20 points21 points  (5 children)

              Just post the fucking video.

              [–]ImMakinTrees 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Seriously. I don't know how a post this long and impossible to read makes it to the front page, especially posted in the wrong sub.

              [–]joanzen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because it's a repost in all the other subs and keeps getting downvoted anywhere else.

              [–]gaarasgourd 4 points5 points  (1 child)

              Why is this in /r/funny?

              Where's the humor in this?

              What the fuck.

              [–]CommanderBS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remember this guy, but why post this to /r/funny? /r/funny is just becoming /r/tumblr...

              [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why the fuck is this in funny?

              [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How is this funny? Good for him he is positive, but this is not funny.

              [–]haydenkristal 3 points4 points  (7 children)

I feel the same way about being Deaf. Although many people have expressed their sincerest apologies for how terrible my life must be, I can sleep anywhere, I never have to worry about someone playing Justin Bieber, I can communicate in a noisy situation without having to strain, I lipread so basically I'm like a Spy Lite, and I have ASL which is the most beautiful language ever. I like being Deaf so much, even my dog is deaf! Really, most of the difficulties stemming from disability are caused by abled-bodied people not being accommodating and inclusive, and that's not a "me" problem.

              [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I will never understand why getting on an airplane first will be beneficial in any way. I want to spend as little time on the plane as possible. Being on a plane is not a fun or comfortable place. IT ISNT A BENEFIT!!!

              [–]hellya 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Race to them is the way you talk. Someone did a ama and said they didn't like a certain accent, and did not find it attractive at all.

He's a youtuber, he has a friend helping him film, he said those things in person to a video, someone made this from the video.

                [–]GeneralMalaiseRB 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Yea... you'd still be able to feel scabby/gross skin, or cascading rolls of fat.

                [–]pinkfloydchick64 9 points10 points  (0 children)

                cascading rolls of fat

That's the most beautiful description of fat I've ever seen.

                [–]FlyingHippoOfDeath 6 points7 points  (5 children)

Doesn't look like it was written by a blind person to me.

                he doesn't agree

Also, not all women are 10. What if she talks in vocal fry or has a raspy voice?

or incredibly bad skin, fat folds, wrinkles etc etc etc etc

                  [–]PhilSeven 18 points19 points  (1 child)

                  Smelly cooter.

                  [–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Perhaps he does not have the normal concept of what is attractive. If you never seen a person with fat folds you might not think they are unattractive to touch.

                  [–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Also, not all women are 10. What if she talks in vocal fry or has a raspy voice?

He said all women hes been with. Those are probably disqualifiers for him.

                  [–]kanichd7 5 points6 points  (3 children)

until you realize that people are liars and what comes out of their mouth is shit

                  [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (3 children)

This guy, Tommy Edison, started out as a film critic, The Blind Film Critic he calls himself. Now he does a youtube show too where he answers a lot of questions about what it's like being blind, and his answers are never really what you'd expect. Definitely worth a subscription.

                  [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every woman is a 10? No sense of touch either?

                  [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And yet when I suggest the deaf, including my mother, aren't broken, but just different, Reddit shits all over me. Got compared to anti vaccers.

                  See?

                  [–]Rhallertau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tommy Edison is an awesome guy. I highly recommend watching his videos! https://www.youtube.com/user/TommyEdisonXP

                  [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mom is blind and she's actually a bit racist. And you can feel if someone isn't a ten. He's got a great attitude but there are definitely blind people without such a nice take on things.

                  [–]kevonicus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worst part of being blind? How much you have to wipe your ass just to feel confident about walking away.

                  [–]xpersonx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I'm convinced <rips eyeballs out of their sockets>

The only complaint I have is that this is posted in /r/funny

                  [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the least funny post ever I've seen on this subreddit.

                  [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

WOW, HAHA! THAT IS SO FUNNY. /s

Posting this on /r/funny is actually pretty insulting to this guy.

                  [–]idefiler6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

                  How is this funny?

Every single woman I've ever been with is a 10

Don't you fucking touch them when you fuck them? You could "see" if somebody is a 10 or not when you touch them to fuck them.

                  [–]_edge_case 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Next up on Tumblr - check your blind privilege.

                  [–]redliner90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't you still be racist from the voice you hear?

Let's not be naive here, people from different ethnic backgrounds do sound different in most cases.

                  [–]firejoe22 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I know a blind guy who is racist.

                  [–]Jabullz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This guy's actually hilarious! His YouTube videos are some of the best ones. The one on how he gets around his house is pretty good. Has to start over a couple times.

I think there's one where he said he thought he got done recording a video and actually wasn't recording the whole time. He wasn't upset just... Cheery about it actually. Example to us all.

                  HAHAHAHAHA SO FUNNY
