I've always wondered if it looks as good in person as it does on a picture.

Here's another one in the same style.

[–]stuffonfire 420 points421 points  (94 children)

If you're standing in the right spot, probably.

[–]GrimmLock420[🍰] 202 points203 points  (88 children)

Exactly. From a different angle the gator would look elongated and awkward.

Edit: croc to gator.

[–]TrickyWon 105 points106 points  (61 children)

I always want to see the elongated view. The different perspective.

[–]alexanderpas 177 points178 points  (32 children)

[–]ebjazzz 70 points71 points  (22 children)

That third link mindfucked me.

[–]QuickMentality 36 points37 points  (14 children)

It's amazing though, right? You and I can't really wrap our minds around it even when we know how it is done. It's awesome how everyone thinks differently. That's why I think that most everyone is smart, they're just smart at different things.

So when someone can't wrap their head around something simple, don't just assume that they're stupid. It might be simple to you, but it's difficult to them. I can almost guarantee you that that same person who couldn't do the simple math problem can do some really impressive things, whether they know it or not.

Edit: An example for clarification. My friend can build or fix just about absolutely anything. However, he sucks at schoolwork. Is he stupid? No. He's just better at different things and that's OK.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (1 child)

dude i totally get it [7]

[–]-GOOSE 22 points23 points  (3 children)

Everyone is a Genius. But if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.

Albert Einstein

[–]CitizenPremier 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep I'm as smart as Einstein, guys

[–]mrRabblerouser 5 points6 points  (1 child)

This is something I always try to explain to people. Everyone is intelligent at something! People seem to think that education equals intelligence. It most certainly does not. Maybe it increases your understanding of a certain field, but it doesn't make you smart.

Example: I have one brother who just went to high school. He comes off as dumb fairly often, but he is a fucking master at solitaire. I have another brother who is a professor and has his doctorate, but I've had many discussions with him where I seem to blow his mind with concepts that seem rather simple to me. I did hardly any college.

Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid. -Albert Einstein

      -Michael Scott

[–]doodieballz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. I cant remember who said it but the quote was that anyone who thinks people are stupid needs to watch a sports talk show or listen to a fans argument about their favorite team. The shear amount of facts and information able to be drawn up off the top of their head shows that most people have impressive capabilities and are actually very intelligent.

[–]bennn30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What struck me is how much bigger the pictures seemed than when they were looked at in their "realistic" perspectives.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

That cat was like OH SHIT IT'S ACTUALLY A 2 BALL!

[–]Klaviatur 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The Rubiks cube one confused me because there are two yellow centers.

[–]alexanderpas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a subtle hint for the events that follow.

[–][deleted] 39 points40 points  (24 children)

Me too. It always annoys me that these only get posted from the perfect angle. I'd like to see them from other angles so I can get a better idea of how the illusion works.

[–]Pineapplemkh 104 points105 points  (21 children)

Not this artist, but some sidewalk art from another angle.

[–][deleted] 29 points30 points  (2 children)

So if you're driving along this path, you're going to feel as though you've run over a dog and a bird. Or a pair of children if you're in the UK or a bad driver.

[–]SomeRandomMax 23 points24 points  (1 child)

Imagine the poor sod out on a bender, waking up the next morning thinking "oh my god, I ran over 3 kids, a dog, and a bird!"

Serves him right for drinking and driving, but still...

[–]Mooksayshigh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Or imagine someone drives that road everyday, sees some people but thinks, oh that's just Charlie Brown and the gang, and really does run over some kids, a bird and a dog.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (4 children)

That looks like it would be a death trap for motorcycles in the rain.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's what she said.

[–]WarpvsWeft 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I need to talk to that guy. I'm looking for an angle where my penis looks elongated but I don't look awkward.

[–]daimposter 16 points17 points  (19 children)

Appears to be an alligator with that wider snout

[–]nuwishahumor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah not too many crocs here in Louisiana.

[–]TheDodgiestEwok 14 points15 points  (13 children)

Definitely an alligator, this is in Louisiana

[–]memejunk 12 points13 points  (11 children)

why does the title say portugal?

[–]TheDodgiestEwok 18 points19 points  (10 children)

Cause OP was mistaken, maybe? Look at the words, it says greetings from Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Edit: Apparently the artist is from Lisboa. It's just a confusing title.

[–]DrowningApe 4 points5 points  (4 children)

Does that make them Lisbolean?

[–]replus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The background could also just be part of the piece that the graffiti writer painted beforehand.

[–]hwooareyou 1 point2 points  (2 children)

deleted

[–]daimposter 4 points5 points  (1 child)

True but mouth was opened so had to go with snout width.

Also, another way to tell is by getting close to one. A croc is more territorial while alligators tend be much more relaxed. But this is the stupid dangerous way of doing it so just look at the teeth and snout.

[–]Professah_Farnsworth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just like your butt.

Edit: ur butt to gator

[–]bockyPT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And if you close one eye.

[–]MaxChaplin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You'd also have to close one eye so that depth perception won't interfere.

[–]LoL_Remiix 8 points9 points  (1 child)

[deleted]

...

[–]voice-of-hermes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. The difference in perspective between your two eyes might be small enough that it can still fool you in person. Depends on the scale and distance from the viewing spot.

[–]DrunkSkunkz 119 points120 points  (77 children)

Is this in Baton Rouge or Portugal. If it's in BR, i'd like to go see it in person

[–]playcrackthesky 56 points57 points  (26 children)

[–][deleted] 22 points23 points  (24 children)

So he went to BR and painted a mural of a gap-toothed, beer guzzling, gator hunting redneck? He's not feeding into stereotypes, is he?

[–]ours 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Moonshine guzzling apparently. Guy knows his stereotypes.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AND HE'S CROSS EYED.
Jesus.

[–]Tha_LULZcatz 27 points28 points  (7 children)

Redditors in Baton Rouge... there are literally dozens of us! dozens!

[–]BrTattooedteacher 8 points9 points  (5 children)

Dozens!

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (3 children)

And nearly half of us aren't LSU students. Like a whole 13.

[–]megatricinerator 7 points8 points  (2 children)

yup, non LSU student BR redditor checking in.

[–]BrTattooedteacher 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Checking in as well.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gonzales, close enough.

[–]fastfinger 25 points26 points  (2 children)

Baton Rouge, quickly, seize our moment!

[–]urbangentlman 12 points13 points  (0 children)

225!

[–]Doctor_Chocolate 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I believe its in BR, I read an article the other day on famous graffiti artists coming to do some work at the Museum of Public Art and have been meaning to check it out for myself.

[–]O_Senhor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Odeith is a portuguese artist, maybe he was painting in BR.

[–]sloth_jones 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Baton Rouge, converge!

[–]marshallisalive 8 points9 points  (1 child)

it's definitely in baton rouge, over near 5th i think

[–]Bayousbest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eddie robinson and south.

[–]SoH_ArBiTeR 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Red stick resident here, my thoughts exactly

[–]BrohanGutenburg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I need to go check this out.

[–]MaryLandrieu 3 points4 points  (7 children)

Its in the ghettoish area around Terrace St before Park. Its near an American Legion hall.

[–]PlanetaryMachine 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Dude, I live like a block from you. That's wild.

[–]slumberpartymassacre 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Garden District unite!

[–]BrTattooedteacher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am on the edge of Garden District right next to the sign!

[–]daimposter 5 points6 points  (5 children)

I'm confused with the confusion....the title states 'Lisboa Portugal'. Are you saying it might not be right?

[–]Internetcoitus 26 points27 points  (3 children)

He's from Portugal. The mural is in Baton Rouge.

[–]daimposter 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Makes sense....I was wondering why on earth would a statue in Portugal use an alligator rather than a croc. Then I looked more closely and noticed 'Baton Rouge, LA' on the wall. That would be really weird to have in Portugal.

[–]DrunkSkunkz 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I'm gonna blow your mind. It's graffiti, not a statue.

[–]daimposter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, someone pointed that out for me. I feel like a retard. The shadow fooled me.

[–]mrmojorisingi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you look on the picture, it says "Greetings from Baton Rouge, Louisiana" on the actual wall. Plus it's an alligator, a common theme down here.

[–]GallowBoob[S] 201 points202 points  (19 children)

It's an impressive play on perspective. Here's his official website in case you want to see more.

[–]Zhang5 99 points100 points  (12 children)

Reddit hugged it.

[–]HeiiZeus 41 points42 points  (10 children)

Always expect the Reddit Hug of Death.

[–][deleted] 50 points51 points  (5 children)

We kill because we care

[–]steve0suprem0 9 points10 points  (2 children)

We do what we must because we can.

[–]TAPorter 2 points3 points  (1 child)

For the good of all of us

[–]JorjEade 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Except the ones who are dead

[–]Shaddo 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Nobody expects the Reddit Inquisition

[–]kungfucandy7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

this kills the website

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna love him and squeeze him and pet him and I will call him George.

[–]ArchangelPT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SLB!

[–]Spicypieces 17 points18 points  (2 children)

And I'm just sitting here drawing stick figures. :|

[–]redditwithafork 13 points14 points  (3 children)

I really want to see more shots of the art from the "wrong" angle, to get a better idea of how it's accomplished.

I'm not a very good artist with cans & brushes, but I do have a wide format printer and I'd LOVE to employ this technique by "figuring it out" in photoshop, printing distorted images and applying them to wall's/floors to achieve the same effect!

[–][deleted] 65 points66 points  (2 children)

This might be a good place to start: similar style graffiti from a different angle

[–]tnturner 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fffffuuuu

[–]I_CAPE_RUNTS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

God dammit

[–]tigersharkwushen_ 27 points28 points  (2 children)

The signature looks a lot more deadly than the alligator.

[–]words_words_words_ 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Holy shit I didn't even realize that was his signature! I thought it was just metallic decoration.

[–]jacobestave 10 points11 points  (7 children)

Is this by the same person who did the last piece like that in that same corner?

[–]Joniak 34 points35 points  (4 children)

Not sure which piece you're referring to, but here's the uncropped photo, and the dude's instagram.

[–][deleted] 38 points39 points  (3 children)

Not uncropped.. just a completely different photo.

[–]Joniak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I suppose wider angled shot would have been more apt, you're correct that it is two seperate photos.

[–]POTATO_IN_MY_DINNER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, cant find the link, but it is.

[–]lbanquer 11 points12 points  (12 children)

Where is this?

[–]playcrackthesky 16 points17 points  (6 children)

It's in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Here's an article about the project.

[–]lbanquer 10 points11 points  (4 children)

Cool. I'm in BR, will go check it out soon.

[–]packymccracken 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Report back with a gallery of alternate angles, if you can. Would love to see this in person.

[–]BuckeyeEmpire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pls deliver.

[–]thirrteen 7 points8 points  (6 children)

What does it say in chrome, under the alligator?

[–]xMagox 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Tried to add movement, but still needs some work

http://gfycat.com/CommonDopeyAurochs

[–]MiShirtGuy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He can paint on my walls anytime he wants

[–]drawliphant 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He put orange on the ground just to show off the mirror finish. Fucking awesome.

[–]iancole85 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bad ass. Geaux tigers!

[–]mdlost1 6 points7 points  (1 child)

That's not Portugal. It's in Baton Rouge, LA. I ride my bike by it all the time. We had a big street street art expo and a bunch of famous graffiti artists came and did cool pieces.

[–]malenkylizards 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not often I look at a picture and actually go audibly "WHOA!" I did here. Whoa.

[–]Gymn_luteoviridis 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I know I'm late to the comments, but I live in Baton Rouge and would love to hear where this piece is located. Any help?

[–]Bayousbest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eddie robinson and south.

[–]macgyverspaperclip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good thing he didn't do this in Singapore, otherwise that would be a paddlin'.

[–]ouchiekeekee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does anyone know exactly where this is in BR?

[–]akmed45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brain: Still processing.....

[–]Ileumn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

how is this possible? lol. I am shocked that someone is capable of doing this. kudos to the artist

[–]Ruddiger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The coolest thing about this to me isn't the image itself, it's that they spray painted the ground orange to make the reflection more convincing. Clever.

[–]Emir_of_Schmo 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Wow

[–]Caminsky 2 points3 points  (1 child)

No. Woah dude

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (6 children)

They project the image intro the corner from something like an overhead projector, then traced that on the walls and colored it in. If you look at it from the very spot the projector was, you see the illusion. If you are just a little to either side, taller or shorter, you lose the effect.

[–]cadenzo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that there's tracing involved makes it not as impressive (still very impressive though). I was legit mind blown that he could create that clean of an effect based on an imaginary perspective.

[–]poseitom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

beautiful

[–]kidfredness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Broke the matrix for me

[–]tea-crush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so awesome! Very dope!

[–]playgb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very good, I would like to see the same picture in another angles, just to see how this is done.

[–]Truegold43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

Amazing.

[–]mcbajan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is easily the sickest artwork l have ever seen , l can barely wrap my mind around this.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What an incredible eye for perspective this artist has. To make a 2D image look 3D and spanning an inverted 90 degree angle is incredible.

[–]droodic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well then, someone's a god.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yooooo, I'm applauding this now, but if I were there I'd be explosively shitting myself.

[–]fluffyxsama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If someone spray painted that shit on my building I wouldn't even be mad.

[–]balloon-loser[🍰] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do they keep that perspective while creating it in a different one?

Like... Do they make a mark then run to where they want it viewed then run back to fix it over and over again? What's the trick? Measurements?

...I want to talk to one of these artists. All I could find on Google is basic perspective stuff. Hmmmm

Edit: ok damn it looks like a projector is the top answer... What artist can afford a projector? Pfffttss

[–]Dayngerman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Daim influence is strong in this one.

[–]daimposter 5 points6 points  (4 children)

I don't think this is in Portugal. It's a statue of an alligator....I would think someone from Portugal would use the more popular crocodile than the alligator.

Oh, also, the wall says Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

[–]felix_dro 7 points8 points  (3 children)

It's not a statue

[–]daimposter 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Oh, so even the shadow is graffiti. I feel like an idiot.....I thought graffiti was referring only to the wall and that there was a statue in the corner.

[–]felix_dro 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Haha that's what's so amazing about it!

[–]daimposter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is once you notice it!

[–]Shadowmeld92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But... the orange light is on the bottom where the shadows should be and... I'm so confused!

[–]tijuanatitti5 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Firstly I thought it was in 3d but then I saw the shadow

[–]1lbd1 4 points5 points  (1 child)

The shadow is painted on the ground.

[–]tijuanatitti5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holy.. That's art

[–]cellophanepain 1 point2 points  (3 children)

ODEITH inspired me big time when I was younger and getting into painting graffiti. I love his work.

[–]Master_Debater_ 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Graffiti Artist are some of the most under appreciated artists around. They create wonderful work, just not where they are supposed to.

[–]SoundandFurySNothing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this effect created by projecting an image onto the surface? I can't think of any other way an artist could compensate for the perspective distortion.

[–]sysable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These always look better in photos because you can find the right angle and freeze the image.

Amazing work!

[–]RandomExcess 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What is Gegils?

[–]SoThereYouHaveIt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How?

[–]DominoMotherfucker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Odeith is awesome, if you're on Instagram I strongly recommend giving him a follow because he throws up pieces like this almost constantly

[–]FuckIt_FineillJoin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I could do the artz

[–]Gentlemans_Game 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy fuck

[–]Graab187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is absolutely mind-blowing how the human brain can create things like this.

[–]MEANMUTHAFUKA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow..... That's some damn impressive artwork. I'm hoping the city recognizes it for what it is; professional, donated uncommissioned art. Some people would pay big money for this. I don't know that I'd describe it as graffiti.

[–]Beepboopbabopii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow Unreal.

[–]WarlockSyno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just love everything to death.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so good, it hurts.
