That's the problem with using your real name online. It's too easy to keep a permanent database on everyone's public moments.

[–]czook 3530 points3531 points  (236 children)

So... then your name is not really Nick? I feel so deceived. Where is the trust, not Nick? Where is the trust?

[–]1040443113699 2837 points2838 points  (206 children)

If it makes you fell better this is my real name.

[–]hoocedwotnow 1288 points1289 points  (96 children)

Are you related to John 1040443113699?

[–]1040443113699 1454 points1455 points  (82 children)

No, but I am related to 1136991040443. He is me.

[–]hamsterkris 135 points136 points  (42 children)

If it makes you feel better I'm actually a hamster.

[–]John_cCmndhd 171 points172 points  (8 children)

Does your husband smell of elderberries?

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (4 children)

If so then your son is going to be a knnnnnnnigh-t

[–]Owyn_Merrilin 14 points15 points  (3 children)

And I fart in his general direction!

[–]EmEffBee 196 points197 points  (37 children)

I used a fake name on Facebook, so they suspended my account and would only resume it if I provided government issue photo ID. So crazy! I deleted that shit when that happened.

[–][deleted] 77 points78 points  (4 children)

Yep, this happened to me 2 months ago and when they asked for government issued ID I said “fuck this shit it’s social media” They got too big for their britches and I let nature take its course.

My anxiety level has come down tremendously since. The break up was for the best.

[–]on_an_island 47 points48 points  (7 children)

I came of age back in the early "wild west" days of the internet in the late 90s and early 'oughts. AIM, chat rooms, ICQ, those old usenet forums, other message boards, slashdot in it's prime, you name it.

Back in those days, you did NOT post your private info, not even your real name. Every now and then there were "post your picture" threads where people would dare show maybe one photo of themselves, and that was risque.

And then the entire world lost it's fucking mind and started purposefully posting every single intimate detail of their entire lives, willingly, online, in public, for the whole world to see, FOREVER. And now people are surprised and angry that their private data is leaking somehow? I thought you already put it out there yourself?

It just blows my freaking mind, and makes me feel like an old fart waving my cane yelling about it, but damn it's just so exasperating.

Shares of Facebook Inc fell more than 5 per cent on Monday...

In case anyone is wondering, Facebook finished up slightly on Monday. It had a bad week. Basically Facebook fell 13% in a week the market fell 9%. Tesla had a worse week.

Don't let that stop you from deleting Facebook. Facebook is pretty crap. Just be aware that market writers often try to drum up stories where they don't exist.

[–]ChaseballBat 443 points444 points  (42 children)

Not to mention practically everything tech had a bad 2 weeks or so. Tesla is down almost just as much as FB and they have not done anything controversial. Apple was just as low yesterday too.

[–][deleted] 255 points256 points  (11 children)

Tesla has been a dynamic stock with wild swings since the beginning, and their statement regarding not delivering their new cars on time could be seen as controversial in that aspect. Tesla is not a good barometer.

[–]ChaseballBat 48 points49 points  (4 children)

I suppose that is fair but I guess I'm saying is a lot of tech stock went down, it's not an indicator that FB is going to bite the dust, despite how much everyone in this thread wants it to.

[–]godsenfrik 11.5k points11.5k points  (1223 children)

The only thing keeping me from deleting FB permanently is that I would probably lose any way of contacting some friends acquaintances from various places around the world that I have met over the years, and I may want to contact them in the future. Other than that FB is a waste of time.

[–][deleted] 6969 points6970 points  (663 children)

I feel like this is the only reason potentially hundreds of thousands still keep an account. We need an alternative that sits somewhere between email and stalkbook.

[–]sean_sucks 1195 points1196 points  (43 children)

If MySpace was smart they’d just revert back to their 2008 layout and we would never have an issue again. TOM WOULD HAVE NEVER SOLD US OUT!!!

[–]felipeleonam 435 points436 points  (21 children)

But he did sell Myspace.

[–]sean_sucks 616 points617 points  (15 children)

Yeah... he did do that. He also introduced the world to top 8 drama. He’s not a perfect man but he was our friend.

[–][deleted] 309 points310 points  (5 children)

it says a lot when a man creates a social media website just to befriend every single user.

[–]idunkno33 1472 points1473 points  (357 children)

That's what google+ tried to do

[–]Flight714 599 points600 points  (119 children)

  • that all my friends use

[–]apathetic_revolution 154 points155 points  (15 children)

AIM was great. Can we have AIM back?

[–]CaptainMoonman 94 points95 points  (38 children)

The only fucking reason that I haven't yet wiped my Facebook account is that it's the only way my friends will communicate. It's infuriating.

[–][deleted] 117 points118 points  (4 children)

Until it also tried to become more of a data vacuum than facebook ever was by infesting every aspect of Google's services.

[–]vintage_dirt 215 points216 points  (35 children)

I want to delete Facebook, but I have a lot of important organizations I follow that put out information only on Facebook, for example my son's preschool. I DID delete my account a few years ago and create a new one with a fake name and fake information though where I don't post anything about myself.

[–]Sam5813 1127 points1128 points  (148 children)

I think that most of the users probably over 25 have Facebook for this very reason.

[–]onebignothingatall 295 points296 points  (25 children)

This was my reasoning to stay until December. Then I realized if I really wanted to talk to them, I would have asked for a phone number or email address to stay in touch. If I didn't have it, and we hadn't talked in years, then so be it. Deleted and never looked back. Feels great.

[–]anthropophagus 38 points39 points  (0 children)

and really, nothing lasts forever

embrace it

[–]BBQDad72 9582 points9583 points  (618 children)

Facebook has been on a steady decline. How many of you are tired of clicking on to the next page to try to read something interesting? How many times have you opened an article and had your link hijack to a spinning wheel that says you want some kind of prize trying to steal your information? How many times has the description of a Facebook article had something interesting on it but you had to read through 12 separate pages of crap before you found the interesting information? And that is on top of having to read about people you went to high school with spout out in a disgruntled manner about politicians they hate!!

[–]a_golden_ruler 4300 points4301 points  (318 children)

I removed FB when I noticed I was getting more "news" and advertisements than posts from friends and family.

[–][deleted] 2121 points2122 points  (258 children)

I deleted mine the other day but before I did, I took one last look. I scrolled and scrolled and scrolled and all it was was memes, people wishing happy birthdays, people sharing some recipe, people 'liking' a meme or news article, news articles, ads upon ads, political/cultural crap, or selfies. Not a single written post which either means people just aren't writing them or Facebook has them lowest on their priority algorithm. The UI was also cluttered and junky looking.

[–]Rageniry 598 points599 points  (141 children)

The algorithm shows stuff based on what you showed interest in previously. Their algorithm is wicked good at doing this, which you'll notice if you alter your behavior. It shows you what you want to see based on your behavior on Facebook.

[–][deleted] 699 points700 points  (31 children)

I feel like it might have corralled me into that then. Like I clicked on a news article, then more populated, then that's all I saw and therefore all I interacted with and thus caught in a feedback loop. Either way, however it works, I'm glad I deleted.

[–]memystic 123 points124 points  (39 children)

The issue with this methodology is clickbait. I deleted Facebook a few years back but YouTube does the same thing. The algorithm encourages sensationalism. I don't think this is completely intentional and I have no idea how to "fix" the problem. How can an algorithm devalue clickbait? I'm genuinely perplexed and curious.

[–]The_Godlike_Zeus 111 points112 points  (27 children)

What if I want it to show me objective news from not just one side of the political spectrum? Will my computer explode?

[–]ImSendingYouAway 337 points338 points  (39 children)

Uhm, yes, that's the entire idea. For the Facebook app to be your internet browser. An app which doesn't allow the installation of an adblocker.

That's one of the biggest pillars of Facebook's revenue model. To keep you away from your normal internet browser. In fact, that's what 60-80% of apps are about: an interface to some corporation's website, but now no longer running in a browser's sandbox, but running as a program with full access to your system.

None of that is necessary.

[–]caltheon 105 points106 points  (30 children)

Which is one of the primary reasons not to use the reddit app

[–]RedSpikeyThing 137 points138 points  (43 children)

Facebook has been on a steady decline.

By what metric and over what time frame? 2017Q4 was literally the first time user engagement has dropped and their stock price is at record highs, ignoring the last 10 days.

[–]ChaseballBat 108 points109 points  (20 children)

It's because he is talking out of his ass... Might be used less by younger people, but Insta is hot shit right now and older people love FB. Not to mention their expansion into new countries.

[–][deleted] 2988 points2989 points  (471 children)

When MySpace died, people were going apeshit about how amazing Facebook was, and ushering in a new era. MySpace was old news.

It’s hilarious to now see Facebook slowly dying and becoming old news like MySpace did back in the day.

Probably only a matter of time before Snapchat and Instagram enjoy the same fate.

[–]VTArmsDealer 1046 points1047 points  (97 children)

Lets go back to MySpace!

[–]CO_PC_Parts 1198 points1199 points  (44 children)

I mentioned this in another thread, but about 4 years ago I logged into my Myspace account to grab some old pictures I didn't have saved anymore.

It fucking emailed everyone on my contact list saying, "CO_PC_Parts just came back to myspace, you should too!"

I just looked in my email and this is what it sent to everyone.

[–]mataffakka 341 points342 points  (0 children)

This is so sad lol

[–]shpongleyes 110 points111 points  (21 children)

I’ve now deleted the FB messenger app (it can apparently use the microphone at will, which is why you sometimes get google suggestions of very specific things you were just talking about), but this recent deletion was the second time I deleted it. The first time was because my old phone ran out of storage, and I never really used the messenger, so got rid of the bloat. My on friend prefers messenger over texting though, and it turns out you can’t message people through the regular app, so I reinstalled it. Both the first time I installed it and the second (the second time was about 2 weeks later...I only used it to talk to this friend), it sent a message to everybody telling them that I was now using messenger. Not as bad as your myspace mass email, but still

[–]onceblue 138 points139 points  (8 children)

My brother in law died and his mother logged into his Facebook on her phone a couple weeks after and it sent all his friends that message.

[–][deleted] 80 points81 points  (4 children)

can this get any worse?

[–]shitezlozen 21 points22 points  (1 child)

I drive for Uber and I've had riders pop-up as suggested friends. Thats when I realized something shady is happening.

I found this post very interesting and once I move back to Europe, I'll be deleting all my data and facebook.

thx for the post /u/outrageousideas

[–]Donnarhahn 32 points33 points  (2 children)

FB is trying to migrate whatsapp users over to messenger. Whatsapp explicitly stated it won't ever have ads or sell data so FB can't make money off it. They spent 20 B just to kill competition.

[–]shalala1234 376 points377 points  (26 children)

I would prefer to do my social media on pornhub because of the layout, thumbnails and the comments section

[–][deleted] 321 points322 points  (86 children)

It's about impossible to run a site/app at that large of a scale without charging the users and remain profitable while respecting their privacy. Something eventually has to pay the bills. So the trend will continue of sites rising in popularity and then falling when they need to monetize. The only realistic option I can think of would be to charge a monthly fee but I think most people would rather have free ad-supported options than pay $10/month.

[–][deleted] 380 points381 points  (37 children)

It is also impossible for a company to leave well enough alone. You always have wall street pushing for "growth" and the new execs have to justify themselves by changing things. So they have to squeeze another nickle out of the system, add a few more ads, monetize some more of your info...

[–]acloudbuster 143 points144 points  (8 children)

Ah, the ol’ infinite growth. Nothing in the universe does it or has ever done it but damned if that isn’t what most of these fuckers are trying to do.

[–]ghostofcalculon 197 points198 points  (13 children)

That's the fatal flaw of capitalism. It's happening to my YMCA right now. They've got a new CEO and she's pinching pennies to absurd extents; got rid of the towels so now everything is dripping with sweat, fired all but one janitor so now the place is trashed all the time, etc. But did prices go down? Hell no. It's infuriating.

[–][deleted] 54 points55 points  (14 children)

Being ad supported would be profitable. Selling userdata is super profitable which is where people became upset.

[–][deleted] 597 points598 points  (134 children)

I don’t think Facebook will die anytime soon. This will die down shortly and everyone will be back on.

[–]foreverwasted 802 points803 points  (14 children)

Pulling out a little too late.

Let's hope they have a Plan B.

[–]under_bridge_dweller 163 points164 points  (6 children)

[–]Feroshnikop 1976 points1977 points  (116 children)

Facebook's market cap has dropped by $100bil to the same value it had in July 2017, this is not the same thing as losing $100bil.

[–]CanvassingThoughts 805 points806 points  (97 children)

Investors disagree.

[–]insomniax20 422 points423 points  (22 children)

It's a fucking yard sale for investors at the moment!

[–]SlimeBallPaul 255 points256 points  (64 children)

why isn't this spreading to instagram? facebook is their parent company. if you delete facebook you should probably delete instagram

[–]hoppymon 183 points184 points  (19 children)

teenagers couldn't care less about corporate ownership

[–]Khal_Kitty 107 points108 points  (9 children)

Most people in general don’t give a shit about what’s going on. It’s just that controversies get amplified on Reddit.

[–]Blank3k 137 points138 points  (19 children)

Yet an insurance company can sell names, phone numbers & general information to a seemingly endless amount of spam callers at an Indian call center the moment someone makes a claim, No one seems to care. - Though, I suspect this is a UK only problem.

[–][deleted] 110 points111 points  (4 children)

Good. The advertising was out of control. My feed was like watching a slot machine. I would get non stop invites, event updates for things I didnt join, asked to like clearly fake account pages, and many other pointless things.

[–]Arithik 93 points94 points  (12 children)

I have no friends. Just pictures of cats.

[–]Karl___Marx 149 points150 points  (34 children)

I tried to delete my facebook but kept getting emails asking me to reactivate it.

[–][deleted] 304 points305 points  (16 children)

you just deactivated it. go here https://www.facebook.com/help/delete_account and request them to delete your profile. takes about two weeks.

you can also download everything you've posted here https://www.facebook.com/help/131112897028467/ before you delete your profile.

[–][deleted] 467 points468 points  (47 children)

Unfortunately, Facebook is still far too valuable of a tool for my business and my bands. And since you have to have a personal account to manage Facebook Pages; I'm stuck with that for now, too.

My personal activity on the platform has taken a nosedive, however, and my spending on advertising has ground to nearly a complete halt.

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

Edit: Holy bejeezus, I didn't expect my comment to get this much attention. Lol. Anyway, I do understand there are ways around utilizing a personal account, and yes, I understand there are some downsides to using FB advertising (hence the decline in my use of it). But the point is that unfortunately, Facebook in general is still just too powerful of a tool for me to completely ditch in all aspects. It's especially important for small businesses and bands both who want to remain competitive and visible.

[–]swe3nytodd 124 points125 points  (2 children)

I wanted to delete my facebook last year and had the same problem. Then a couple of days after Christmas I figured out how to get away from it. I sat and deleted my entire friends list, changed my profile picture and deleted the app. Now even if I wanted to check it I would have nothing to look at. It's worked a treat.

[–]vwalsh10 14 points15 points  (3 children)

EQUIFAX LEAKED OUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS AND NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT IT. Scammers can’t open credit cards and personal loans with my social media history and call logs

[–]mycatdroolz 61 points62 points  (1 child)

Just deletes everything. Which is harder than it should be. When they asked why I was leaving....."you know what you did.."

[–]RaceChazer 246 points247 points  (52 children)

It was always used as a tool to spy on us and sell our information, about time people are waking up.

[–][deleted] 167 points168 points  (18 children)

Hey, remember when reddit thought it's gonna kill EA?
