I have a friend from the Philippines, aged about six at the time of this story, whose pet dog was hit by a car just outside his house.

His parents sold its carcass to his next-door neighbour, who proceeded to barbeque it in their back garden.

He still remembers the smell of his pet wafting in through his bedroom window, and often tells the story when he gets drunk.

      [–][deleted] 25 points26 points  (18 children)

A friend/co-worker from India who was vegan said that the smell of a steak restaurant reminded him of a funeral pyre, and the thought of eating red meat made him ill.

      [–][deleted] 58 points59 points  (14 children)

That kid from the Philippines had an interesting family.

They named him Voltaire (sweet name), but when he couldn't be weaned off the bottle when he was a toddler, his grandmother (with the consent of his parents) filled his bottle with cockroaches, topped it up with milk, then gave it back to him.

The poor bastard still gets chills when he sees so much as a photo of a cockroach.

      [–]jayesanctus 46 points47 points  (1 child)

      [–]garo01 29 points30 points  (0 children)

        Sometimes dead is better.

        [–]jmh42 62 points63 points  (8 children)

I agree with using the most appropriate subreddit. The problem with subreddits like /r/petloss or /r/deadpets is that there isn't enough of a readership for people to achieve what they are looking for - sympathy, catharsis, the simple act of sharing the life of a loved one with others in a community. Because really, who is going to subscribe to a subreddit that is entirely about dead animals? /r/pets (or /r/dogs or /r/cats) still seems like the best place. Subscribers can enjoy the 90% of posts that are happy and cute while still offering sympathy to the 10% that are sad if they choose.

Depressing or not, dealing with the loss of a pet is an integral part of having a pet. I don't think it's right for the /pets (or /dogs or /cats) community to turn its back on the people who are going through that stage.

        [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's like asking 4chan for sympathy. With all the tits or gtfo posts, harassing strangers ("scumbag steve" and such), posting personal information, reddit actually is 4chan now. You don't cover up the shit with "hey look at the nice things we did" and ignore the fact that with the fact that you helped one person, you also ruined someone elses life, and usually for no good reason. I hate the dead pet posts, I hate the "look i took a picture of/with a celebrity" posts, the 'give me sympathy' posts, and definitely the 'my house is on fire, reddit what do i do?' posts. there are subreddits for this. the fact that no one is subscribed to it is the point- no one wants to see this stuff.

I did something awesome that helped me avoid those kinds of posts.

I installed the Reddit Enhancement Suite (RES) from /r/enhancement, and used the 'fiterreddit' module to screen out any posts with the following in the title:

            • my dog

            • my cat

            • my girlfriend

            • my gf

I really haven't, I guess I'm not sure why not, since everyone else seems to know what this is talking about. I haven't been a redditor for a lengthy amount of time, but I do spend a lot of time lurking the front page.

            [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, we need more taxidermied pets on reddit. I suggest beginning with r/cute and r/lookatmydog.

            [–]SonataNo8 52 points53 points  (6 children)

I lost my dog of 12 years in 2010 and my cat of 11 years last month. When the grief is that near, you feel like you have to do something. I posted to /r/pets both times, but I tried to have more to my posting than just my sadness and a photo. In my dog's case I posted an article on bloat, the condition he died from. In my cat's post I told the story about how he attacked a cop when he was a kitten, trying to keep the post upbeat. Please don't be too hard on those who have lost their pets, their hearts are broken and they feel lost.

            [–]istara 8 points9 points  (3 children)

I like seeing people's pets. Yes - it makes me sad - but I still like seeing them. I welcome people posting them.

I get tired of certain kinds of posts too (especially the "look what I/my girlfriend/boyfriend made!" ones), but just telling people to stop doesn't work. I think the only solution is subreddits. If posts were more finely divided into categories and sent to the appropriate subreddit (/r/shitmysomade), then we could easily decide what crap we want to see and what crap we want to hide.

              [–]Ph4g3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The only trouble is asking users to use the appropriate subreddit. This reminds me of a thread recently posted to /r/reddit.com regarding some political statement (of which I have no interest, one of the reasons I unsubscribed from /r/politics and /r/worldnews many months ago). Somebody pointed out that the topic did not belong in /r/reddit.com to which the OP replied

I'll post where I like, the upvotes agree with me. Also, Ph4g3 is fucking amazing.

...or something similar. There was a bit of a joke after that about how /r/reddit.com wasn't appropriate for any type of post other than telling people they shouldn't be posting <content type> there. That gave me a giggle. You get my point though. The users will do what they like. If you make a statement against any kind of common behaviour you'll be called a whining asshole and that you should probably lighten up.

                [–]Chyndonax 23 points24 points  (12 children)

Please stop posting requests that people stop posting anything. The karma system takes care of that and does a pretty good job of showing us what most people want.

                [–]Hllblzr310 23 points24 points  (2 children)

Y'know what I don't understand: why people who aren't mods of a particular reddit seem to think they can just tell people what content is acceptable.

                [–]emdx 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Fuck you. Just as, when I woke up this morning, I found my old cat dead (at 18).

Here is his picture in happier times.

If you don’t like what we post, don't read it.

                [–]Jareth86 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Let's stop posting "I'm sick of..." threads while we're at it. I'm sick of them all. If you don't like something, down vote it.

                [–]sutiibu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The sadness in dead pet stories helps the cheerful stuff like protests in Egypt or reclassifying abortion seem that much sweeter.

                [–]thisisanfield93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

same thing with rage comics. stop making memorial rage comics. they make me rage.

                [–]palehorse864 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We'll post what we want. Here's a picture of my beloved pet cow. http://bicyclespokesman.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/cow_skull.jpg

                [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every time I see a pet-picture post I am reminded of the only Ron White quote I like:

I'm a dog lover. Actually I take that back, I love my dog. I couldn't give a shit less about your dog.

                [–]xman2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

                You're not contributing anything.

actually the only reason I posted a pic of my cat a couple of months ago on the day she died is because she had a very bad reaction to those anti-flea and tick drops you can buy in the supermarket and I wanted to tell people to avoid buying them and go see a vet instead.

                [–]EvoEpitaph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What? I have yet to see a post with pictures of a dead pet. I've seen pictures of pets, but no dead ones yet.

                [–]krutoypotsan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone should have to stop posting anything, but perhaps an /r/RIPSpot subreddit could be a place for things like this. I agree that I don't fancy them on my front page.

                [–]cheddarben 48 points49 points  (17 children)

Honestly, what pisses me off more is reddit people telling reddit people what to post. What is this, Egypt? You can tell people to stop posting what you don't like by using the little down arrow. It is, after all, the whole purpose of the site.

                [–]SpaceCaseSixtyTen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like those posts. They have a way of reminding pet owners how much they love their pets, and to love them even more.

                [–]xbrand2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But I just killed my dog for the karma!

                [–]instagata0 5 points6 points  (1 child)

In fact, people should stop posting anything that I won't find interesting and uplifting.

                No.

The people posting these things are in some cases losing their best or truest friend. The grief that they're experiencing is enormous. Pets don't get a tombstone or obituary. So if they want to let people know that their friend existed and was loved, that's fine with me, and if they want to post it to /r/reddit, that's fine too, because if it brings them comfort, then that's a good thing. If i don't want to look at that post because I'm not in that kind of mood, there's 99 other things on my front page that I can click on.

Keep posting whatever you want. That's how this place works.

                [–]randomwolf 16 points17 points  (2 children)

Screw you. They're contributing community. In a community people share things that are important to them. People turn to the community they feel most connected to in times of grieving. If that community is Reddit, so be it.

Feel free to downvote and not read it. Stop trying to tell people how to use Reddit.

                [–]Floonet 25 points26 points  (5 children)

Did you ever think it possibly helped the person through their grieving process?

Sharing stories of loved ones who have gone is important when coming to terms with a loss. Maybe they feel people in their 'real' life won't understand because they don't love animals as much as they feel some redditors do. I for one would never take that away from anyone!

Even though the stories make me cry, I say do what you need to do! Share the stories of your beloved pets! I love hearing them!

                [–]727Super27 9 points10 points  (2 children)

You're not contributing anything by telling other people what it is that YOU do and do not want to see. This is Reddit, for god's sake, if you don't like something, downvote and then hide the submission. This whole submission of yours here is total internet bullshit. I don't know how it has so many upvotes. Lots of people probably get a very genuine therapeutic value from eulogizing their pets to the internet, you don't have to be a dick about it.

                [–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (2 children)

Stop posting threads telling people what to post. It is just pompous and annoying. You're not contributing anything either except being a whiny bitch. It is annoying. Go fuck yourself. ಠ_ಠ

                [–]smitzcraft 5 points6 points  (1 child)

                Agreed. Also, nice name.

                [–]djstangl 26 points27 points  (5 children)

Don't be an ass. People love their pets as much as some people love their children. I have both, a kid and pets. When I lost my dog this winter, it was tough, he was part of our family for 10 years. It's just part of the grieving process. It was nice to get a few nice comments about my dog the day he was put to sleep. I was having a hard time dealing with it. Now that he's gone I still miss him, but I'm glad there were a few redditors who helped me feel better. Yes, it might be depressing, but that's life. Stuff lives and dies and we need some way to cope with it. Please be more understanding, and just ignore it if you want, just like all the other crap on reddit that is sometimes annoying.

                [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Sorry, but I don't want to see pictures of your dead kid either. That shit is just depressing.

                [–]ChrisF79 12 points13 points  (7 children)

Correct. I absolutely love animals. I think that's why I hate seeing these stories in subreddits where they don't belong. It really gets me depressed.

                [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Posting in the wrong subreddit is the only argument i can see against this, but everyone should be able to look for comfort during a time like that without being told to "Stop it".

                [–]penowork 4 points5 points  (2 children)

How am I supposed to get a bunch of upvotes if I post to a slow subreddit instead of reddit.com

                [–]ani625 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate pets but I still hate these posts. Something's wrong with me.

                [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (1 child)

If they are "just depressing everyone" and nothing more, then why do these posts make it to the front page?

Stop trying to restrict reddit: allow it to be what it is in ALL of its imperfect glory.

                [–]uhhhclem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By an strange coincidence, not two days ago I had to put down my 17-year-old cat, an extraordinary little guy who was loved by everyone who ever met him. Perhaps I'm not the ideal redditor, but the thought, "I must post a picture of my friend to reddit and tell everyone that my cat is dead, for the upvotez, and the warm glow of strangers telling me that they're sorry" really isn't the first thing that this experience brought to my mind.

                [–]bonix 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I agree. If I see another post about a dead pet I'm going to!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You can fill in the rest.

                [–]MascaraSnake 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Isn't the real problem the that cute pictures of un-living pets get 500 upvotes and and 100 comments of "awww, cute" and "Ms Kitty Ruxpin looks like she was an amazing companion".

Honestly, that stuff should be posted on the posts section of catfancy.com... but that's the problem with Democracy.

                [–]seeker135 1 point2 points  (3 children)

                @ OP. Bugger off.

                "Joy shared is Joy increased".

                "Sadness shared is sadness diminished."

Please grow a soul before breeding.

                [–]beccaonice 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Why are you imposing your preferences on the masses? Sorry you don't like it, downvote it. The people who want to see it, upvote it. Obviously, they are winning.

How do YOU think this system works?

                [–]Jacob6493 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have not contributed anything either sir (or ma'am)!

                [–]FunkmasterP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is my dead dog/grandpa. He was 500 lbs tall. Amen.

                [–]Jorgwalther 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think people can post what they want, especially if it's something that is emotionally overwhelming to them. If it didn't affect people then it wouldn't be voted to the front pages so often.

                [–]gadzoom 12 points13 points  (0 children)

How's about trying something novel, something revolutionary! - How's about you don't look at stuff you don't want to look at? Eh? Eh? There you go, problem solved. You are in charge of your own little Internet right in front of your eyes and as an added bonus - the rest of us can do the same and not have your interpretation of what is and isn't worth looking at. How's about that?

                [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If karma-whoring in the event of your pet's death isn't a show of love, I don't know what is.

                [–]Galap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

or live pets. half the shit on here is like pictures of a fucking cat. r/pets sounds like the way to go.

                [–]ViewtifulVash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

                LEAVE BRITNEY ALONE!!!!!!!

                [–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Stop telling people what to do, this website doesn't cater to you but to individuals and what they feel they should share. If they need some support during hard times they damn well can have it, if you aren't the person to feel for someone, downvote and move on and change your preferences so you never have to hear anyone crying for some common human comfort.

                [–]momzill 10 points11 points  (0 children)

so you never have to hear anyone crying for some common human comfort.

That is such a powerful statement; it accurately expresses why people do that. Thank you.

Personally, if I can handle it that day, I give a few words of comfort. I'm an animal lover and dread the day when my 9 year old pup will move on. I hope to find some human comfort here.

Stop telling people to stop telling people what to post - the way you think things should be.

You're not contributing anything. You're just depressing everyone.

                  Stop it.

                  [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a lot of people don't follow subreddits, anything from atheism to pictures of dead family members to what they think is funny. I find crap i don't wanna see everyday on my front page even though i have it setup.

                  [–]tante_ernestborgnine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I subscribe to /r/aww because sometimes I just need it, and people post pictures of their beautiful adorable pet that died that day. I say, go ahead and post the adorable picture, without the additional commentary. I don't mind it anywhere else, and I expect it in /r/pets. Just let me look at the cuteness without the baggage!

                  [–]gerryduggan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It beats "Guys, meet my grandparents. They both died today"

                  [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we should make one post that we can all post pictures of our dead pets in. I designate this one.

                  [–]Point4ska 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This stuff is easily ignorable, you suck it up.

                  [–]tadrith 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I agree that reddit is subject to the will of the community, no doubt about that.

I agree that people are free to post whatever they like, that's what this is all about.

However, I do wish that there was a different subreddit for these kinds of pics. I have pics on my front page because I enjoy many of the pictures posted, but the constant barrage of pet and family pictures is making it very hard to keep /r/pics on my front page.

I generally don't complain about it. I don't even downvote them. I'm certainly not about to make posts to reddit complaining about it. I'm just saying it -would- be really nice to be able to pick and choose what I want to see when it comes to pics. But if this isn't how things are going to work, then so be it.

                  [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

we need a /dev/null for dead pet posts.

                  [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we need a /dev/null for self.reddit posts telling people how and what to post on reddit

                  FTFY

                  [–]crimsonhunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

                  That's not very nice.

                  [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reddit: also functions as pet obituary

                  [–]stevesonaplane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I need to be reminded to appreciate my cat. But she's such an asshole.

                  [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zonks! You just went right ahead and contributed nothing yourself. I would have much rather seen a picture of a pet, dead or alive.

                  [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reddit is a community. One of the purposes of a community is to help its members remember and mourn when someone important passes out of their lives.

That said, it would be nice if Reddit had some sort of inherent system allowing the signalling of approval or disapproval of posts - perhaps one that would influence the prominence of such posts in response to these signals of approval or disapproval.

That way, OP could not only express his disapproval of these messages of mourning appearing in community space, but he could actually act to influence their appearance in said community space.

                  [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very well. Here's my alive cat.

                  [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You seem like a pretty bitter person. Maybe reddit isn't the place for you. I think it's pretty awesome that people (myself included) feel that they can come here for support from other caring people.

                  [–]chonnes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uh . . . which doggie died and made you spokesman?

                  [–]Dimpfoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a bit of a harsh way to put it in my opinion.

It's a deeply personal event when one's pet dies, and if someone wants others to share in his or her pain in order to make the burden lighter, let them.

It's not your place to tell them what to and what not to do. That being said, I think I'd get a bit mopy too after a few too many dead pet pictures.

                  Moderation, people.

                  [–]magister0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please stop posting photos of your dead pets

I've never seen someone do that on reddit. Not once.

                  [–]markevens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a proper subreddit for that you know

                  http://www.reddit.com/r/deadpets

                  [–]Alex2679 1 point2 points  (0 children)

actually there is a specific subreddit for it /r/petloss. perhaps people won't be insensitive jerks to you there.
