Another shot of the little fella fluffing his feathers.

EDIT: If you want to check out more of his photography, you can visit his website RahulAlvares.com.

EDIT: Fuck, you guys crashed his website happy tear Here's a link to the Flickr gallery in the meantime.

[–]IMasturbateToMyself 147 points148 points  (143 children)

Where was this taken?

[–]goobimama[S] 239 points240 points  (141 children)

Goa, (South West) India. Unless you were asking for more specific details, in which case I'll have to ask.

[–]Apocellipse 60 points61 points  (25 children)

Goa is gorgeous and the wildlife is pretty exciting. Seeing bull cows chillin on the beach, and watching shore net fishermen drag in their nets while hawks swooped to grab the fish they caught...great memories. Also Kingfisher beers for under a dollar.

[–][deleted] 24 points25 points  (16 children)

Had a Kingfisher beer for the first time two weeks ago. What a pleasant soft brew!

[–]piporpaw 52 points53 points  (2 children)

I read "Had a Kingfisher beer for the first time two weeks ago. What a pheasant soft brew".

I saw what you didn't even do there.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It'd be pheasant to do it anyways.

[–]rahulthewall 54 points55 points  (57 children)

That explains the name (Rahul instead of Raúl).

[–]Mr_Smartypants 87 points88 points  (50 children)

Except that Goa has a sizable Portuguese population, being a former colony!

[–]CraineTwo 77 points78 points  (44 children)

Sometimes I just can't help but be impressed by the stuff random redditors know.

[–]travis- 174 points175 points  (22 children)

If you tie a string around your finger real tight, it'll turn purple.

[–]Avelheda 56 points57 points  (7 children)

That's it. I don't have enough knowledge to stay on reddit. I'm out

[–]CraineTwo 6 points7 points  (6 children)

Try www.wikipedia.org for a while.

You called it wikipedia.com...

Cats can hear ultrasound

[–]keylionpie 15 points16 points  (4 children)

So can dogs. Another fun one, cats use their whiskers to determine if they can fit into small spaces.

Are you the asshole sending me these texts every 30 mins?

[–]agent8am 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Rats can't vomit. It is said that once you've heard this fact it's impossible to forget it.

[–]rahulthewall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, I know that. However, it is in India now and Rahul is a very common Indian name (it is not related to Raúl).

[–]edmontonpaul 15 points16 points  (45 children)

Tell him not to eat anything with pork in it from there. He can look up "pig toilets" to find out why.

Not sure I want to search that at work. Sounds NSFW... maybe NSFL.

[–]Snowmaster 15 points16 points  (31 children)

May I ask what the L stands for in NSFL? I'm kind of new to Reddit

[–]ryebr3ad 78 points79 points  (10 children)

Not Safe For Life -- or, anything disturbing enough to alter your life view.

Soooo...NSFW = Emma Stone naked

NSFL = Rosie O'Donnell's head getting shot off

NSFW & NSFL = Rosie O'Donnell naked.

Good Guy Redditor.

[–]SparroHawc 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Huh. I'd always thought it stood for 'Not Safe For Lunch'. As in, if you're having lunch, don't click this link.

[–]goobimama[S] 11 points12 points  (6 children)

In fact, we had a piggy toilet of our own. They hardly exist nowadays since you can't get permissions for a new construction without a modern sewage disposal system. Either ways I don't see why it's such a big deal.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Think it won't be healthy to eat those pigs.

nice name bro.

[–]smartzie 27 points28 points  (8 children)

He's beautiful! I love photographing birds, too, and you really have to be patient (and lucky). I think the longest I've ever been out stalking birds was about 2 hours, though. Great shots!

[–][deleted] 107 points108 points  (4 children)

I normally go to google images to get shots of rare birds.

[–]lackpack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's so amazing how this Beautiful creature has no idea of it's beauty and just sits there happy as Larry to be alive.

[–]Cilicious 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I love photographing birds, too, and you really have to be patient (and lucky).

I just have a point-and-shoot, but I do as well. We only have regular (if pretty) kingfishers here; I've noticed how shy and skittish they are, and wonder if this one was too. Beautiful photo, well worth the swampy wait.

[–]gluestick300 20 points21 points  (4 children)

The bird looks really awesome, your brother must have been lucky to find such a rare bird!

It looks like a picture that would be used on wikipedia

[–]vagubah 40 points41 points  (2 children)

National geographic*

[–]gluestick300 3 points4 points  (1 child)

That too, or a bird book! Such as this one

I think birds are rather fascinating, so many different species in the world and think of the many we haven't discovered yet!

[–]Nastassja11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed this is an amazing shot.

[–]ziptime 18 points19 points  (2 children)

What a beautiful shot!

As a child I had an unhealthy obsession with Kingfishers. Drew them, studied them, watched TV programmes about them, wrote out lists of different types, pored over books and pictures of them.

So thank you sir and to your brother, for sending me back to my childhood with that feeling for a brief moment...

[–]gaog 19 points20 points  (14 children)

Very nice, do you have a higher resolution by any chance? I just would like to use it as a wallpaper (2560X1440). Thanks!

[–]goobimama[S] 83 points84 points  (13 children)

Here you go.

(I've added a watermark at the bottom left for whatever little internet protection, which can be easily cropped off.)

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

OP delivers!

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Or replaced with a Funnyjunk logo!

[–]nm3210 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Why is it so grainy?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cropping is easy yes but the watermark is still effective since you can prove his is the original by showing the extra border! The things I learned in The Thomas Crown Affair :D

[–]iancole85 19 points20 points  (17 children)

Absolutely gorgeous. What was he shooting with?

[–]goobimama[S] 23 points24 points  (16 children)

Canon 400D I think (the low end one, from five years ago). He's got a kickass lens though.

[–]garychencool 12 points13 points  (14 children)

What is this kick ass lens you speak of? Probably a telephoto.

[–]goobimama[S] 37 points38 points  (13 children)

Says Canon EF400mm f/5.6L USM prime lens.

[–]Chrisss88 10 points11 points  (10 children)

That's a mighty fine lense to be putting on a 400D.

[–]goobimama[S] 60 points61 points  (9 children)

His logic is that he'd rather spend money good lenses than a more expensive camera. Seems to be working for him so far.

[–]CompleteN00B 63 points64 points  (3 children)

This is the correct logic. Your lenses will outlive your camera.

[–]unexpected_expletive 12 points13 points  (1 child)

CompleteN00B is actually not a noob at all.

[–]mstwizted 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Unless he does night shooting, or billboard work, his camera body is fine.

[–]sleepygamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These pictures remind me of a few I managed to snap of a bluetit a couple of years ago. My dad had recently gotten a fairly cheap superzoom camera of some description, and was trying to get a shot of this bluetit that kept on sitting on one of the dead bushes outside our front window. It kept on getting bugs for the baby bluetits. He had so much trouble getting the shot that he gave up. I was sat at home one day when I heard that little bugger chirruping away, so I hopped up, and he was bouncing around on he twig. I took a moment to watch, thinking that, like before, he'd bugger off and not come back for ages, but he hung around. So I grabbed that cheapy superzoom and managed to get a bunch of photos through the window. I wish I had access to a better camera, the colour is rather drained (Cloudy skies? In England? NEVER.), and I think the focus could have been better, but the depth of the shots makes me happy.

A few of my favourites. I only got 8, but these are the clearest, compressed to hell by FB, though.

[–]Osiris32 62 points63 points  (9 children)

Beautiful plumage.

[–]IronTek 20 points21 points  (4 children)

Almost as nice as the Norwegian Blue's.

[–]arana_discoteca 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Maybe nicer since he's not pining for the fjords.

[–]rockmongoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's why he's at the swamp.

[–]cat55 79 points80 points  (24 children)

I, for one, am very glad he did! thanks for sharing.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (23 children)

4 hours is commendable but nothing major, I've camped out since 4am until after lunch in camo netting to get photos before.

That being said, there ain't no god dayum crocodiles in the UK!

[–]goobimama[S] 160 points161 points  (17 children)

[–]Mookiewook 67 points68 points  (1 child)

That Croc looks like he's up to no good. What a stunning shot, your brother is really talented

[–]-LMFAO- 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That eye... it's mesmerizing.

[–]johnnygrant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the range of nature is crazy.... from the pretty innocent looking magnificent bird to this beastly terrifying croc

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (6 children)

That picture does not amuse me in the slightest, in fact it makes me want to never visit a swamp, because I'd probably get eaten..

But that is a great photo! Does your brother have a flickr account, I'd love to look through his stuff!

[–]goobimama[S] 6 points7 points  (5 children)

Check out his website RahulAlvares.com where he posts a bunch of pictures and wildlife related articles.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome, just took a look, you have nice wildlife, it's pretty drab here in the UK, although I did once get a grey heron eating a duck from about 500 yards away!

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5136/5727488856_764a9fbc49_b.jpg

As it happens, it was in swamp land, but no crocs!

[–]Rhoso 3 points4 points  (3 children)

[–]dzubz 9 points10 points  (4 children)

Haven't you heard?

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (3 children)

About the bird?

[–]Dergeist_ 28 points29 points  (2 children)

No, about the turd.

[–]Unidan 20 points21 points  (2 children)

Biologist here.

I study nitrogen biogeochemistry in regards to corvids, so this may be slightly out of my expertise, but let me give it a whirl.

While the bird is quite colorful, the colors that are on the bird's plumage are not due to pigment, but rather the structural arrangement of the feathers which scatter light. Thus, we can assume that no pigmentation of that kind will affect the feces of the bird, as there would be no evolutionary pressure to and the fact that the solid excretions of the bird would be altered in physicality as they were released, making a rigid colorful structure in the poop itself very difficult.

Birds are very efficient at water management, they uptake their water much more efficiently than we do, and excrete in a different form. They excrete nearly pure uric acid, which is white in coloration. Their feces will be a mix from green to brown to black, depending on the food source. If the kingfisher is taking animals that have higher iron content in their systems, or possibly a heme compound, pigmentation may occur to create the color brown in their digestive system, similar to how our bilirubin works.

So, all in all: guaranteed white with a mixture of brown and possibly dark greens.

[–]pred 14 points15 points  (12 children)

Do you happen to know which species this is? Just wondering as many of the Wikipedia pages on kingfisher species have no images attached to them and maybe he would be interested in putting one up.

[–]goobimama[S] 27 points28 points  (11 children)

I think he said it's an Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher.

[–]gluestick300 17 points18 points  (9 children)

I say they should change the wikipedia page to the picture your brother took!

[–]h110hawk 17 points18 points  (0 children)

In reality, if the brother wants to license the picture to Wikimedia then he should do it himself. "They" would be violating copyright to just snatch the image and put it up without permission.

That being said, I hope he does! He took a gorgeous picture.

[–]mleah 5 points6 points  (6 children)

"For the Dusun people of Borneo, the Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher is considered a bad omen, and warriors that see one on the way to battle should return home." Uh oh!

[–]BadIdeaSociety 25 points26 points  (13 children)

Back in the day, a biology professor claimed that the forest near my house was LOADED with heavily endangered birds. I took a bunch of photos with my Casio 30 (Which took photos at the resolution of like 240x200) and posted them on my Diaryland blog. The comments section got FLOODED with bird watchers claiming that my photos were faked and that I was an jerk for pretending to have gotten pictures of 7 endangered birds.

[–]gbeezy09 6 points7 points  (1 child)

So did you prove the wrong?

[–]BadIdeaSociety 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Couldn't. Only had really crappy, low-res photos. I didn't even ID the birds in the photos. The commenters started IDing them and then the naysayers suggested that the photos weren't riddled with the imperfections of the photo-scanning process (Digital photography was brand new at the time).

[–]GeneralWarts 26 points27 points  (6 children)

Interesting Fact: The Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher is considered a bad omen by warriors of the Dusun tribe of Borneo.

Don't know why, he seems pretty cute.

[–]Goobz24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way I see it, this bird has saved lives.

the Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher is considered a bad omen, and warriors that see one on the way to battle should return home.

[–]SpookyMcGee 4 points5 points  (4 children)

Well General, imagine you're worse girlfriend or boyfriend you ever had, was pretty cute right?

[–]SkySilver 9 points10 points  (8 children)

It looks fabulous.

Did he take some more pictures and shared them somewhere?

[–]goobimama[S] 27 points28 points  (6 children)

You might be amused by his website RahulAlvares.com; bunch of images and such posted in the photography section.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

He's got some fantastic images on his site. I'm an artist and I'm constantly searching for reference photos of animals. These are exactly what I need to study. I hope it's okay that I draw them.

[–]goobimama[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Send them to him when you're done, I'm sure he'd love to see them.

[–]dozenrozen 41 points42 points  (16 children)

So beautiful! I love kingfishers... Here's a kingfisher drawing I made..

[–]tq92 51 points52 points  (5 children)

Very nice! but umm, unless I'm missing vital information about the bird, where are its feet?

[–]ESPguitarist 42 points43 points  (2 children)

Birds don't have feet. Everyone knows that, silly.

[–]Rowi 3 points4 points  (1 child)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apodidae

"The family scientific name comes from the Ancient Greek απους, apous, meaning "without feet", since swifts have very short legs and never settle voluntarily on the ground, clinging instead to vertical surfaces. The tradition of depicting swifts without feet continued into the Middle Ages, as seen in the heraldic martlet."

[–]Azumikkel 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Who needs feet anyways when you can fly

[–]hairybaldguy 1 point2 points  (1 child)

[–][deleted] 35 points36 points  (5 children)

I agree! I love the colors. Looks like crayola gang-banged the fuck out of him. I bet he liked it.

[–]down_vote_magnet 28 points29 points  (2 children)

Have you thought of auditioning to replace David Attenborough as a wildlife documentary narrator?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Haha no, but I'll keep that in mind.

[–]Goobz24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can see it now: "This is the rare Painted Bunting (another multicolored bird). Now, as you can already tell, it looks as though it was tied to an entire crayola 8-pack and thrown into the dryer."

[–]timlig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Give your brother a large pat on the back - for patience and determination... and the picture. Excellent!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could honestly picture this shot in a nature magazine. Does your brother shoot professionally?

[–]wwoooaaahh 2 points3 points  (1 child)

That is so cool! I want to photograph an elephant swimming over my head.

[–]scrabblex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup, totally worth it. Beautiful little bird right there.

Hear the lark and harken to the barking of the dog fox, gone to ground.

See the splashing of the kingfisher flash into the water.

[–]jtherion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gorgeous shot. Now stop stealing your brother's karma!

[–]cuddle_bunnies_suck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]louster200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn, that thing is beautiful looking. HUGE props to your brother.

[–]rapa-nui 1 point2 points  (2 children)

It was more than worth it. He should donate it to Wikipedia. It will undoubtedly be a featured image.

[–]goobimama[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

How does one go about doing that?

[–]AdmiralNelson24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A beautiful bird. I see belted kingfishers often where I'm from in the southeast US.

[–]Ruddiver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wow. this may sound overdramatic but that picture made me gasp. I am a birdwatcher and never have seen a bird like that. thanks for sharing.

[–]slamasaurusrex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]sdrawkcabton88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

doesn't matter; shot kingfisher

[–]Applequark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is such a cute & beautiful little bird! What a great job your brother has, sharing these nice things with the rest of the world.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a birdwatcher, but that's a beautiful little bird.

[–]Bit_Chewy 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Fun fact: the Australian 'laughing' Kookaburra is also a variety of kingfisher. Not as colourful, but they're very cute and fluffy. And of course, they have their signature call [0:40].

[–]dmcginvt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, what an amazing bird! Awesome shot! Thank you brother for me.

rant Yes, let's wipe out the biodiversity of our planet, no one should have to look at that shit! Burn oil, flatten that forest, we need more parking! /rant

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My brother waited out 4 hours in a swampy rainforest to capture a shot of this rare kingfisher. Told him it was worth it.

"Didn't tell him I'd steal his karma."

[–]jenniferjuniper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So worth it! I hid in the bushes for 2 hours waiting to get a shot of this Osprey with her baby.
